I was delighted to find that after a summer of homemade shakshuka in Israel, it's the new craze in NYC. From fancy Balaboosta to the for truck Shuka, this tasty mix of tomato-pepper sauce with egg is everywhere. It was thoroughly delicious here, perfect for a snowy weekend brunch. Each meal is served on adorable little trays with toppings and pita bread. Lots of menu items for vegetarians and vegans, and everything sounded so good I wanted to eat it all then and there. Stopped by tonight for a casual bite. I got the salmon plate and my friend got the pulled pork plate. Both were delicious. The salmon was tender, seasoned perfectly, served on a nicely and lightly dressed bed of arugula next to a generous serving of brown rice. Yellow rice was also an option. Casual setting for lunch or dinner with a friend or coworker, not too loud so conversation flows easily despite the cafeteria table style, prompt, friendly service, and fresh, healthy food at affordable prices in a central location. Go-to spot in the neighborhood. My favorite spot for Shwarma! This place is steps above your average Shwarma spot. My favorite is the chicken Shwarma in a pita or plate. I ordered the salmon pita. It was so good! You can smell the tzaziki sauce when you open the bag. The salmon was not dry, it was very tender. I've never had soft, fresh pita. I always thought pita bread was dry and crusty. This was my first soft pita bread...because it was fresh! The arugula was fresh too. There were no seats left because it was during the lunch time rush. The wait was short for the order. My friend and I took our order and sat in the nearby Union Square park. Nice little casual spot. Food comes out quickly. Enjoyed a pita here with grilled eggplant, hard boiled egg, salad, and tahini ($6). Pita was warm and delicious and the filling was tasty - good quality, i.e. the veggies were in great condition ripe tomatoes and fresh cucumber - makes a big difference. Mint lemonade was mediocre (I wouldn't get it again). And I did not take advantage of the free cookie for writing a review. Look forward to going back to try more of the menu. read more

I love Middle Eastern food and have eaten in many such establishments all over Manhattan and the outer boroughs. Taboonette is one of those restaurants that I've wanted to dine at, but just never did until today for lunch. It will definitely be one of many visits as the box-shaped falafel was crunchy on the outside and ever so tasty and green on the inside. We ordered the falafel platter with quinoa. Something was off with the kitchen today. First, they were out of chicken shawarma at 11:45 AM. This is my go to sandwich and is normally awesome. I opted for the pulled pork pita instead. Instant regret. The pita was cold, bread was hard, and there were huge pieces of fat mixed in with a scant portion of actual pulled pork. The meal itself deserves 1 star, but bumping it up to 2 given this was the first bad experience I've had. 2 stars may be a harsh ding for one bad experience, but consistency in restaurants is key. With so many options in the area, I will be much less likely to head to Taboonette in the future. read more

This place did not exist when I was at Parsons, but I wish it did. I had the fish and rice. It was delicious. Also, We had some desserts. The olive cookie was surprisingly tasty, but I still liked the cake better. It s a good little spot and has a pretty look to it. The girl who was serving us was very nice and not so bad to look at. The materiality of the space was interesting because it didn't exactly point to Mediterranean. I really liked that. We ordered the Lamb Kebab plate and Chicken Shawarma plate and lentil soup. For someone who is conscious of having plate diversity, they have pretty equal portions of carbs, veggies, and meat.
