It was my daughter's 33d b-day dinner. We go out every year for her birthday and always enjoy the day. Unfortunately, not at the Tacconelli's in NJ. (However, we did enjoy a birthday dinner one time at the one in Philly.) We usually go to a different place every year. It was the worst b-day dinner experience at a restaurant. We felt rushed before we even got in the door. Someone called me from the restaurant at 6:00 p.m. right as we were getting to walk into the door. We brought our own cake so the waitress told me that she would cut the cake to save time. I told her that we wanted to cut the cake after dinner and sing happy birthday. She told me we could not do so because there would not be enough time. (WHAT?). The waitress never asked how things were going and if we needed anything. We had to keep asking for water and soda. When we asked for more napkins (there was 14 of us) she brought literally three napkins. When I insisted that I want to cut the cake and sing by daughter happy birthday after our dinner she said that they will have to charge us $1.00 per slice (OF OUR OWN CAKE.) Will never come back here again. It seems like they are just out there to make a buck and not so much on pleasing the customer. On the side note, today we went for my boyfriend's b-day dinner at Michelangelo's Pizza in Philly. Absolutely wonderful staff. A wonderful experience. Wonderful accommodation. I was so shocked to see that none of the kitchen staff or employees serving takeout food were wearing masks or gloves. We went in to pick up our takeout tonight, and no one who handled our salads or pizzas (in both preparation or actually handing it over to us) were wearing a mask. NJ Executive Order No. 192 requires employees to wear masks with very minimal exception. The employees not wearing masks were not working over an open flame. I'm not sure what the owner's justification for this is -- but it seems like such a minimal effort to keep both your employees and customers safe. Even if you think you fit under some exception (which I can't imagine you do because every other restaurant I've been to has masks), why wouldn't you have the people touching and breathing over our food wear a mask & gloves? Sadly, you've lost my business for good because you care more about making your political statement than our safety. Btw: I'm the first one to say how delicious their pizza and salads are - but this was last straw in terms of how much they care about customers (no credit cards still - even during COVID, no curb side. What an interesting pizzeria first off it is very large perhaps seating upwards of 200 people easily; last Saturday evening was busy with a short wait of 15 to 20 minutes. That was enough time to run to the corner for a bottle of wine as Tacconelli's is a byob restaurant. Once seated service was impeccable as there is a tag team approach among the waitresses so things move seamlessly from start to finish. Looking at the menu verses the seating you understand why there is only one size pie 16" with your standard types of toppings. This puts less stress on the pizza operation and enables them to meet high demand, productivity and turnover, pretty smart I'd say. There are several pasta, salad and dessert items as well but overhaul the menu is limited and designed to roll with high volumes. A simple plain cheese pizza is how I judge my first time pizza experiences. This was a thin crust cooked perfectly with a nice bottom crunchy texture. Flavor, this place as it's devotees and I can understand why the locals are enamored but I look for something more in my pies, the Italian umami factor; for me that comes from high gluten pizza flour which I believe this was not. The sauce was quite different not your standard San Marzano pure tomato preparation and was decidedly garlicky which was not objectionable in any way, just not my favorite. The cheese topping was good not the stringy mozzarella that I like but it was tasty nonetheless. There is nothing wrong or objectionable with their pizza it just didn't kick me over the top but there are countless others that go sailing through the goal post each and every night. Finally, the new Tacconelli's has opened! It's been long awaited and to avoid withdraw, we went back to the original Tacconelli's on Somerset Street in our neighborhood. (Note, we usually avoid the original since you have to call at 11am just to get a pie.) We were thoroughly impressed with the new place. Lots of seating, and it was a very open floor plan. The decorations and colors all went well together and it was, overall, an intimate atmosphere. We also were sure to take note of the large side room where we'll more than likely have a party! The pizza, as expected, was spot on! We were also very pleased with the additions of pasta to the menu. We ordered the gnocchi, and it was delicious!! The reason that it's only a 4 star rating was because the wait staff was lacking. When we got our salad, we didn't have any plates or utensils to eat it with. This happened again when our pizza was delivered and there was a good 5 minutes that we didn't have any plates to eat on. Regardless of the wait staff, I would highly recommend it to anyone. Tried to go one weekend but realized they were cash only...so we had to come back another week. Place was packed on a Saturday night around 8pm. I didn't know about this main street part of Maple shade, despite growing up in South Jersey. Love the small town feel of the main street. Charming. This also probably adds to the charm of the patrons. Chatted with some people waiting and they noted that they eat there often. The menu is simple and offers a good selection at a fair price point. Started with single house salad and single gnocci with pesto. Everything is made to order/fresh. Both were amazing. Salad was simple but delicious. The pesto was also very good. It was actually the star of the night for us. Ordered margherita with half mushroom and half prosciutto. The pizza is thin crust. Nice sauce and cheese. The prosciutto added the saltiness.. but was a bit too salty even for me. Minus half star for being light on the fresh mozzarella and basil. Thoroughly enjoyed the meal and will definitely come again. Our server was awesome as well.. Shout out to Savannah (I think that's was her name). Either way... I had always wanted to try this place and despite living in Philly for a number of years I never got there. So I was driving back from Delaware and decided to give it a try. I was underwhelmed. I asked for the pizza and pasta to come out together and the pasta came out first. The ice tea which I'm told was fresh brewed tasted like fountain. Once the pizza came out I couldn't believe how much sauce was on top! I didn't ask for this and when I told the waitress at the end of the meal that I wasn't a fan that it had too much sauce she said "that Is how it is made but you could order it with less sauce next time." Um thanks but I would have liked it that way this time and there won't be a next time :). Would have been nice if I was offered to redo the pie or could have comped a dessert or something especially since I indicated I didn't really care for it. I saw this listed on NJ.com's best pizza for Burlington County and since my wife and I were going to be in the area we decided to give it a try. The atmosphere is nice. We entered through the front entrance off the main street but were greeted with a sign that said we had to walk through the restaurant to the back to see a hostess. Apparently there is a back parking lot that serves as a the main point of entry. No big deal, just a little weird. We were seated immediately and our waitress, though she talked fast, seemed pleasant. We ordered a plain pie with extra cheese and the red provolone pie with pancetta. The pizza comes out pretty quick here which is nice. A different waitress brought the first pizza over - the provolone. It didn't look like it had any pancetta on it but my wife and I both picked up a slice and took a bite. I thought maybe they put the meat under the cheese but after that first bite it was clear there was nothing but cheese and sauce on this pizza. The second pie (plain with extra cheese) came out with an amount of cheese that i would have usually considered regular, not extra. But that it was tasty so we didn't mind. We waited until our original waitress came back over to check on things to explain the pancetta mix up. When i said "I don't think this has pancetta on it" she agreed but then stared at me like i was supposed to do something about it. I said "i don't know if they can just put some pancetta on it or something" to which she explained that "they can't put it back in the oven." and then asked "did you want them to make a new pizza?" we agreed that we would like a fresh, correct pie. She took the wrong pizza with her but returned a minute later and put it back on our table saying "you guys can have this one and I'll bring the new one when it's ready." Eventually the pancetta pie came and it was fine - a little too salty for my taste but my wife liked it. The waitress, while never rude, was not very pleasant after that initial complaint. She never offered an apology for the mix up and eventually stopped coming to our table altogether, letting the other waitresses handle us for a little while. These other waitresses were extremely pleasant by comparison and helped us box up our extra pizza that was leftover as well as offered drink refills and dessert. When the bill came it was delivered by one of these other waitresses and we had been charged for all three pizzas. The original waitress did not explain that we would be charged to get the pizza I originally ordered. If I knew this was the case i would have lived with the mistake. Since I thought arguing with a new waitress over a mix up that she was not aware of would be pointless, I took out my card to pay. Just then, the original waitress popped up out of nowhere to tell us "folks we are a cash-only restaurant but we do have an ATM in the waiting area." Maybe it's because we came in through the front door, but we didn't see any signs alerting people to this fact. So I had to go to the ATM and get charged a $1 fee just so i can take cash out to pay extra for a pizza we didn't want and a tip for a waitress who was intentionally misleading. I ended up paying $60 for three pizzas and two sodas. An overall frustrating experience that really brought down an otherwise great day. The pizza was not that great either. I think there is a very fine line between "gourmet" pizza and bad pizza. This place rides that line. While it is a very thin pizza with a good flavored crust, the bottom crust is so crispy it makes it hard to even fold a slice in half to eat it the normal way. There is almost nothing about it that feels like it has intention behind it. The pizza is, i guess, "rustic" style where it's not the standard round size. it has jagged edges and uneven outer crust. There are some gourmet toppings like pancetta or prosciutto which sound great but we are lucky that we didn't ask for Parmesan cheese to sprinkle on because we heard the waitress tell another table that they charge extra for it! Overall this place suffers from the same kind of poor management that a lot of restaurants do. Cash only. Charging extra for cheese. Penny pinching and blatant deceit. It feels like the kind of place that has its regular customers and is fine in catering to them, but is uninterested in welcoming the uninitiated. When I walked into this place I thought wow, they've really done it right here- beautifully built store, perfect layout. Perfect. Separate take out entrance from the restaurant, huge tables that accommodate large groups (tables are big enough to hold several large pizzas without compromising the customers space for our drinks, plates, etc. It's BYOB, so that is awesome too. Pizza, very good. I've never had the original tac's in philly, but I have to imagine that the pizza in Philly is better. This was good, but not amazing. I had the white pie, margarita, & their plain red cheese. The red cheese was my favorite. The ovens here appear to be brick, fueled by wood or coal, but they're not- they are natural gas fired. I'm not sure if that really makes a difference in the pizza, personally I don't think it does, as long as the gas gets the oven up to the same temps. So pizza ok. Menu was a bit too simple- pizzas & salad, I think 1 sandwich. Almost like they're playing off of Anthony's Coal Fired. Personally, I'd appreciate the option of a side. Even fries or homemade onion rings would be nice. The wait for the pizzas was absurd. It wasn't busy, & we waited an easy 35 minutes for our pizza. Simple pizza that's supposed to cook in 3 minutes in those hot ovens. If it were busy, I'd understand, but it wasn't. The only flaw in the layout of the store is the absence of a vestibule. We sat next to the entry door, & froze our butts off. Kids had to put their jackets on. People were constantly going outside to smoke, etc, & each time that door opened it was an arctic blast on us. That's enough to ruin anyone's meal. If anyone's listening, they should fix this, & it can be done easily. There's plenty of room for a buffer. We were celebrating a birthday, & since we didn't see any dessert options on their menu, we brought our own cake. They charged us $1/head to bring a cake in, we cut it & served it ourselves! That's a slap in the face after spending $200 on pizza & soda for 16 people! If I lived in Maple Shade, I'd probably come here maybe once every couple months, but I doubt I'll make the 45 minute drive again.. So it's decent, & pizza again was very good. read more

My husband's boss raved about this place so we decided to give it a try. We ordered take-out: a margarita pizza and a red pizza. I didn't care for these at all. The margarita had zero flavor to it. None. For as much sauce as there was on the pizza, I was hoping to be able to taste it. My 12 year old who could live on pizza took one bite of the plain and went to get himself something else to eat. The red pizza was over cooked - just about burnt. The way I described the pizza to my husband was that it tastes like leftover pizza that I reheated in the toaster oven and burnt. Cannot imagine eating this for leftovers because of how burnt and crispy the crust was (and we have leftovers since my son won't eat the pizza). I've heard of Tacconelli's, the place in Philly with pizza so good, so exclusive that you have to reserve the crust. I've even attempted to go to Tacconelli's on a Saturday without reserved crust and was told when I called, unless I wanted to wait 6 hrs for an eat in reservation it was not going to happen. So I chalked it up to a not gonna happen unless I plan in advance that I want pizza and can stick to a reservation. When I found this spot I had to check, double check, then check again that this was in fact THE Tacconelli's. After much research I concluded, that, yes this was it. I was still skeptical, but convinced and curious enough to give it a try, I mean it's not like I had anything to compare it to since I hadn't actual been to the location in Philly, it's not like I would be disappointed, unless it was just bad pizza. We go in on a Sunday early evening, yup they are open on Sunday's, entering from Main St. which is apparently the back, we have to walk through the length of the restaurant to get to the hostess table. Now you may think, oh it's a pizza place, not a big deal.. but actually it's is, I did not expect the place to be so big, it's huge with multiple private spaces that I assume you can reserve for parties. It's definitely a nice restaurant not a pizza joint. We were seated in the center of the restaurant at a high cushioned back table, open kitchen, we had a good view of that as well as the specials board, which they definitely had some appetizing entrees, but no I was only there for the pizza. As I perused the menu I noticed something alarming... wait let me look again, check all four page.. hmmm, this one must be missing a page. Waitress comes, can I start you with drinks? Actually, before I get all comfy, I have a question, do you have pepperoni?? Her eyes widen, oh yes, she chuckles, I'm not sure why it's not on the menu, but yes we definitely have pepperoni. I let out a Oh ok as I settle back in my seat, we order some drinks and a pie. Good place to note, it is BYOB. It took a little bit for the pizza to come out, it may have been the anticipation, because at this point I'm still wondering how good it will be. Then, It comes, looking beautiful and smelling glorious. Yup, all of that! And the taste, yup on point! Jackpot.. I can't even explain how excited I was that it was that good, everything about it, from the crust, to the temp, to the sauce. It was so good that we actually ended up ordering a second pie to take home. Yup, that's how we roll. I will definitely be back, especially since I don't have to pre-order or reserve. At some point I'll probably venture out from pizza and try some pasta, but I doubt it'll be any time soon. I'm just glad that after years of living in the area I found this gem! My favorite pizza... at least, so far. I tend to like a Margherita pizza, the white pizza or a basic red with mushroom. I love their thin crispy crust and the red sauce is outstanding. I've enjoyed eating in (even late in the Covid days...as tables were spaced far apart). I also appreciate how efficient it always is to take out food and eat with friends at home. I especially like to eat the pizza cold the next day. I've tried pizza in many places/cities and Tacconelli's surpasses all I've had in the US.
