This is easily my favorite "Taco & Burrito _________" place in the city. Two main reasons: 1) They perfectly toast the outside of the burritos; and B) I am a chorizo whore, and they press the grease out of the chorizo before putting it in your grub item so you get the meaty goodness without the mess running down your arm (plus it also helps to minimize the damage the next morning). For the life of me, I cannot understand why anyone would go to that generic, wannabe La Bumblefrick joint across the street. The food is so comparatively bland and disappointing. Suggestion: get a thing of guac, and just ask for a portion of chorizo, then take that chorizo and put it on the guac, then scoop that s&*t up with your chips and try not to make a spectacle of yourself. read more

Taco and Burrito Express is the best place to go late-night for Mexican food. Please walk the extra 100 feet and skip La Bamba. (Yes, T&B Express will also give you a burrito the size of your head...) Their food is quick and tastes good. Also, the price is hard to beat. All of the food is decent but I think the taco's stand out here. Also, don't forget the Orchata...it is really good here. Also, I want to give a shout-out to T&B Express being open 24 hours...I've been there as late as 4am...and I've seen someone eating there when I was walking to work at 6:45am...pretty awesome! read more

The food was great but the personality of the owner(?) was even better. The entertainment while ordering was worth the price of the food. He was so outgoing and his authentic accent is great. The place is super small, but is open 25 hours a day (according to the same enthusiastic gentleman). When near Halsted and Wrightwood in Lincoln Park, skip La Bamba and head directly to Taco & Burrito Express. I made the mistake of going to La Bamba for WAY too long before a friend recommended their steak tacos. I haven't been back to La Bamba since. They use the freshest ingredients here. Treat yourself to some tacos and you'll think you died and went to California. How can you beat $1.65 for a taco? They make everything to order and it will be served hot and fresh - not as a gushy mess like at Taco Bell. In fact, I think it'd be a sin for me to ever eat at Taco Bell again with this place literally out my back door. The guys that work here (and seem to ALWAYS be working here) are so friendly and encourage patrons to strike up a conversation in Spanish. Don't be afraid, my Spanish is terrible and they haven't laughed at me yet. 3 steak tacos fills me up perfectly. I am addicted to the things. Taco & Burrito Express is open 24 hours, so a word of caution if you're going in after-bar. Don't be surprised to see a pile of puke in the bathroom and someone passed out on the front step (true story). During normal daytime hours though, it's always been clean and fresh. My go to place at bar close. Tacos, burritos, tortas they're all good!! You are always greeted with an hola amigo/amiga when you walk into the door. Food is cheap and good. They are open 24/7 too! Taco burrito express has the best chimichangas. The decor is a little funny but overall it has a fun laid back ambiance. The food comes quickly and delicious. I once witnessed a manager yelling at a customer. I think they knew each other and were joking around, but I was uncomfortable. 8:30 am Chi-marathon Sunday, out walking the dogs and running an errand to Home Depot. Walking back home with plans to go to McD's for breakfast when we pass by this little joint and see that it's open. Change of plans... Have to say, sausage and egg burrito is really good and the price ($4.99) extremely reasonable given the size. The burrito itself is flaky like a pastry crust and as big as a dinner plate. The sausage is like a hot dog link not crumbled, which usually I prefer the latter but former was really good. Also came with eggs, cheese and peppers. I also asked for beans to be wrapped into it and I thought that was a nice addition (extra cost). Each burrito comes with the salsa verde and chili sauce on the side. It was so big I couldn't finish the whole thing, but two days later and heated up for 2 min in the microwave it was still just as good! Only downside was the time it took to make two burritos. But in all fairness, I think we were the first customers of the morning and the chef was still getting prepped for the day. I'd go back. read more

I used to like this place a lot. My sisters introduced me to this place as a young boy in the 90's. It's been one of the many go-to places we frequent after church. The Taco Bowl and cheap cheese-only nachos were my favorites. I was raised on the Northside in Chicago and although this place wasnt my favorite spot for tacos I'd still stop by and eat maybe once a month (on average) because of the close proximity to my home. They are known for being open very late so a few drunk nights ended here in my 20s. Now I have entered the land of the 30s and have a family. Now for the present-day review: My wife wanted tacos after midnight. Usually we eat sleep and breathe Allendes tacos (their rival taco joint on Lincoln ave) but this night i just wanted a different taste, so i drove past Lincoln ave and stopped on Halsted. I am familiar with the staff but not all over-friendly like a neighborhood fonz, I order and I smile, I laugh if they joke and leave. I order one of their combos; "Burger, fries w/ pop .....6.99" as it states on the menu behind the cashier. Never asked me what kind of pop, which is fine because they usually ask you right before they hand you your take-out bag. I also order my wife's 2 tacos and lastly an horchata (sweet rice water). The cashier responded "Aye, ok give me dollar extra for horchata" and I gladly paid with a debit card. The food came out in a timely manner as always. I got my order, and was one foot out the door when I noticed they didnt put a soda-pop in my bag. I casually come back inside, waited for a customer making his order to finish to tell the cashier about the mishap, with receipt in hand. I informed him that he forgot my pop and that I would like a Sprite. The guy tells me that i ordered an horchata instead of a pop. I simply referred to the menu behind him that explains $6.99 for burger, fries, pop and then referred to the items on my receipt where that same amount was confirmed. The tacos were on my receipt as well and so was the $1 listed as "MISC" for the horchata. I instantly realized what happened and informed him that I never said to substitute my pop for an horchata, I wanted both that's why I agreed to pay the extra dollar when he demanded it. This guy was not having it. He kept demanding me to give him another freakin dollar to get my soda (that should have been included in my meal). I explained to him this was unfair and this happened because he assumed. I ask him what was the dollar he charged me for. He never really answered the question but what I gathered an horchata is an upgrade from a pop. Cool, one can argue that but the guy told me to give him his horchata back and he would give me a pop....i was floored. i picked my jaw off the ground and told him fine and that it is only fair that he refunds my $1 listed as MISC. I think at that point he realized the exchange didnt make any sense at all and reluctantly slammed my can of Sprite on the counter. I was so mad, I told him I used to be a regular and I would never comeback again. I informed him that i was not trying to save a dollar just looking for quality service and respect. Oddly i had about $95 in singles, peeled off a lonely $1 bill and told to keep it. So basically they lost a +15year customer over a dollar when they know damn well the food aint that great. I would never tell anyone to go there.....and will go out of my way to deter my friends from going there. Awful service and shady pricing. They typically charge more on drunk and distracted customers. Thank God for receipts and the ability to see. Word to the wise, dont go there food is average at best. read more

Yeah, the drunks and yahoos from the blues bars and the latin bar down the street do take away from what little ambiance (?) the joint has, but order a taco dinner, burrito dinner, large burrito, or super taco anytime between 2am and 5am and you will find out why this place gets packed overnight, all night, every night, seven days per week. Screw paying more money for a more, uh, picturesque (?) setting. This joint serves Mexican food that looks good, tastes good, and makes you come night after night for more. The food tastes great even when I drop in during the daytime when I'm not looped! The guys behind the counter change from time to time, but the food and the prices are the best...period! P.S. The only place better in my humble opinion is the Mexican restaurant on the intersection at Lincoln and Addison, which has grown from a taco shack into one helluva great Mexican resaurant over the past decade. And yes, I realize you probably shouldn't expect much from a place called Taco Express, that caters to drunk 20-somethings...but when dragged there by friends who rave about it, and you're very much sober and try to pay with a card, I don't think you should expect to be screamed at in front of the whole restaurant. They claim that they only take cash but there were no signs whatsoever posted saying that they don't take cards. (Yes, I then checked the whole interior and exterior to be sure I didn't miss a cash only warning.) I came here for an early lunch. The man behind the counter was in a terrible mood. I ordered chips and salsa requested only the spicy salsa. He refused to knowledge whether it was spicy or not he told me "try it to see what you think - just try it". It was extremely rude. The chips were stale and the salsa very mild. Our chimichanga was freshly made but the steak was not seasoned very much - bland and grizzly. It's inexpensive but I will go somewhere that appreciates my business and knows the difference between mild and spicy salsa next time. I have eaten here before and was happy with it.
