So glad this place is back in action after the fire! I think this location better than Rio because it's easier to get to, however there's no difference in the quality of food. Ok maybe the carne asada is better here though. The pastor tacos are the best! Counter service with small tables. There is a fix ins bar with fresh pico, pickled onions and assorted sauces. I have heard the tortas are awesome here too. Nothing fancy but it's always a hit if you have taco cravings.

This place was incredible! I didn't know what to expect, because the yelps from two years ago are so mixed, but with recent yelps being good, we rolled the dice and are so glad we did! Everything was fresh and delicious, and the service was attentive and friendly. We felt like we were part of a family! The meats were all prepared so flavorfully and dished out in generous portion in my street tacos. The happy hour price was an added bonus, and my jamaica fresca was one of the best I've had. We will definitely be going back often!

Our family decided to get take out from taco bar. We decided on the the "buy by the pound option" and ordered 1/2 pound of pollo, 1/2 pound of al pastor and it came with 10 tortillas and an option of salsa as well. I also got 2 sides of rice. The al pastor was so incredibly flavorful and the pineapples added such good flavor. The chicken was a little salty but still very good. The tortillas and the rice were such good quality and tasty! Will definitely come back next time I have a taco craving.

Called 40 mins ago and the lady said that food is going to be ready in 20 mins. Got here and mentioned my name and the lady seem to have not placed my order. So i have to wait another 40 mins and im standing right here writing this review. Please can you fix this! By the way the lady tried her best and thanks for clarifying with the cause of the delay.

The food was good and the price was very affordable. This might be my new taco Tuesday spot! We got a to go order, the guy at the register was nice and friendly too.

Tried it today for the second time. It's a no-go for me. 1. The Al Pastor meat is not supposed to look OR taste like that. I don't even think they know how it's supposed to be properly cooked. Al pastor, also known as tacos al pastor, is a taco made with spit-grilled pork. Cooking method is based on the lamb shawarma brought by Lebanese immigrants to Mexico, al pastor features a flavor palate that uses traditional Mexican marinate adobada. 2. The Suadero was dry. 3. Every taco needs to have different condiments according to the meat. I don't think they know this. They kind of just throw in guac, red salsa, green salsa, pico de Gallo, and a couple of limes and call it a day. That's not how it's done in Mexico. My husband and I gave it a try again since MoCo residents seem to love this place so much, I'm Mexican, raised in San Diego, CA and made many trips across the border just for the street tacos. I don't think I will ever eat here again.

I'm surprised that this Taco Bar location doesn't get as much love as its sibling, Taco Bar II. Yes, it's in Old Town Gaithersburg and not located inside a gas station (those are the best restaurant!). But hey, the food is just as good here! The menu at this location is just a tad cheaper and slightly different. I always get eye hungry when I go to Taco Bar II, so I knew it would be no different here. I wanted to order a half steak torta and pastor taco, but you can only order the whole torta. Bah! So I decided on the steak torta combo which came with a side of fries and a drink. MmMmM just as delicious as I remembered it to be! The bread was warm and crusty. The steak packed a lot of flavor and was nicely fried. The garnishes were fresh. Loved how they were generous with the avocado slices! Next time, I'll ask them to hold the onions. Although I prefer thin fries over steak fries, the fries here were nicely cooked. Not greasy and not overly crispy. Piping hot even when I got home. I also tried a bite of the bistec tacos. The grilled steak was tender and flavorful. They were very generous with the amount of steak placed in the taco that you could make two for the price of one! I also tried a beef taquito. MmMmM deep fried beefy goodness! I liked how the lettuce, cheese, and sour cream came on the side so the taquitos don't get soggy. The salsa bar here doesn't have much variety compared to Taco Bar II, but it still does the trick (lots of compartments were empty). You have your choice of two mild salsas, two hot salsas, pico de gallo, and hot peppers. My favorite was the red hot salsa as both green salsas were somewhat watery. The restaurant itself is rather simple. Several tables and a small TV in the corner playing telenovelas softly in the background. The staff here is extremely friendly and patient. I'll definitely be back for more!

My favorite little place to get some yummy Mexican food. My favorite meal is the chicken quesadilla. The rice is a little bland, but if you add it into whatever your eating, its really good :D The people who work the cashier are very friendly as well. He even puts up with me when I try my spanish speaking skills! read more

very bad customer service, i ordered take out and paid for the chips and guacamole and the 3 carnitas. got home no gauc no green salsa i requested and plain old meat and corn tortillas with the chips. shaking my head. when i tried calling to complain everyone kept handing the phone to each other's to avoid my complaint. no apologies nothing. also i am not spanish too and i know they got annoyed with me trying to talk to me in spanish. improve your customer service asap! read more

Unsanitary. The man working the register and packing my food rubbed his nose a bit to much for my liking before and after he packed my tacos. My husband told me this after I devoured the tacos. I say "devour" because the tacos are delicious. I just did not order the side of nose particles. read more

Thought I was going to the taco place near Shady Grove Hospital out of a gas station/wine store. Turns out this is much closer to my work so that's a plus. The tacos are big and reasonably priced. I especially like the al pastor, it has a bit of sweetness from the pineapple they put in it. Not as much bang for your buck as the other place, but definitely a good deal for authentic food and right in old town Gaithersburg. YUM. read more

Food is pretty good. My husband is in love with this place. The steak meat is pretty dry, and the burritos are so full of rice I had to pour out most of it to find the bit of meat in the middle. The quesadillas are kinda wimpy. But its cheap and quick and that's why my hubby likes it here. read more

Not to be confused with the other Taco Bar near the Washingtonian Center, this place is also good. Different owners (family,perhaps?) They have the same name and concept, but their recipes are different. Hence, the other reviewers saying they dont have the same food. Bottomline, they are not the Taco Bar 1 and 2. They're just on their own. lol. My husband tried to use the groupon at the Washingtonian Center location, and they said they didn't have that promotion. That's when we decided to have mexican food two days in a row. No complaints there. We frequent the WC location because the food is sooo good! Anyway, first time here, and we had good experience. Parking was plentiful. Lady at the counter was friendly. Place was clean with fair amount of seating. Menu is the typical tacos, tortas and burritos, but they have specials! Got the torta especial- good big sandwich with toasted bread, ham, hotdog, breaded porkchop and slices of avocado. We also got lengua taco (I always do when its on the menu)- hefty amount of lengua (yumyum!). We also got a burrito cause its cheaper for what it is- I'd say ok. Oh and we got the choriqueso. It's 4 tacos with chorizo and cheese for 6 something $- ate it the next day with fried egg. Prob better when it was fresh, but hey chorizo was flavorful! They give you containers to fill from the bar. Choose your sauces/salsa. I'd say they're good in their own right. read more

It was decent taco spot. I have a very refined palate when it comes to Mexican food, the corn tortilla was more suitable to the American taste, I prefer the authentic strong Maize taste, but it was still very tasty. The Meats were cooked very moist, I enjoyed the Lengua (tongue) and the beef, over the chicken.....Good Stuff, Good eats.... read more

Love this place! Very good prices and the food is very good quality and filling! I ordered a quesadilla combo with beef and chicken and it was very tasty! I like how they have a salsa bar that you can fill up on as well. The staff was very friendly and didn't have a problem explaining some of the Spanish dishes to this white guy. read more

First time here so what to order? Taco Bar??? Tacos it is. 3- beef, chorizo, pastor. Genorous portions of protein. Nice "fixin's bar. Paper and plastic flatware but whatever. Gonna be real quick and to the point. This place is AWESOME!!! good food, no, great food! its as authentic as it gets. None of that tex-mex crap. Great tacos, great tortas, good horchata and good service. The owner was there the day i went and he was very pleasant and very young too. Im not mexican But i walked out feeling like i was and just wanted to give him a nod and an "orale guey" LOL. Try it if youre in the area! read more

Went here on the recommendation of a trusted foodie friend. Walked in and was the only person not of Latin American descent - a promising harbinger of delicious bites to come. Ordered the shredded chicken and bistec (steak) combo, with rice and beans. Came by default on corn tortillas, which I normally don't care for (too assertive a flavor and almost never pliable enough to hold up through the whole meal). Staff were kind and didn't bat an eye at the gringo Spanish I used to order. Food was very, very disappointing. Both the chicken and steak were dry, and the chicken was almost completely flavorless. Remember my concern about too much corn tortilla flavor? Yeah, it's all I tasted on that taco. The steak flavor was good, but I think I was at the tail end of the big lunch batch because it was so dried out. The rice and beans were crap. One bite of each and threw it out. Unlikely to return. read more

No better Taco's or Torta's are available in the area, which is now stuffed full of latin food options. The Suadero Taco is the best hands down in the Rockville, Gaithersburg Corridor. read more

I got a milanesa de pollo. I love Fortas so I was super excited to try this. The portion was VERY generous. Overall, the food is delicious. I only wish they had queso panela o oaxaca added to the torta. Other than that I was happy but, not impressed. read more

Taco bar has excellent authentic Mexican food. They are very friendly, have cheap prices, and great food! I love the chicken milanesa torta sandwiches as well as the steak and cheese tortas. Their burritos are also good. For the price you pay, you can't beat the Taco Bar! I prefer the Russel Avenue location over the Rio, but they're both good. read more

Got an Amazon local voucher so thought we'd try this place. I got a Burrito and my wife got 2 tacos, as well as an order of chips. The burrito was decent but a bit small although it was half the price of the tacos which was plenty of food. The highlight though were the freshly cooked chips which were delicious. All in all not bad at all I'm sure we'll try it again if in the area. read more

This place in on point!! Came here about 2 times and always order the same thing. Me and the bf get 2 tacos because they double the tortilla and add a A LOT of meat so we can easily have 4 tacos each. Also make sure you order an Horchata!! It's sooo good. read more

Taco Bar is one of my favorite places in Olde Towne. The food is delicious and beyond well-priced. The restaurant doesn't look like much but it hides some really good food. Don't let that fool you - the food is fantastic and service is generally pretty quick! I love the tacos! They are more traditional with some deliciously spiced meat (try the kind with pineapple!). There is a salsa bar that has salsa, hot sauce, and other condiments to make the food exactly to your taste. This place is definitely a gem! read more

Love everything about this place. I love their tacos and burritos (OMG desayuno burrito!!l. But I always get the torta because it's my favorite! The people are very friendly even though they are working really hard and non-stop because everyone loves this place. My recommendation is call ahead, wait 15 mins then go in and pick it up. Waiting for your food will take some time. But if you have friends is not a valid experience waiting around either read more

the taco bar near the gas station is much better. i tried the steak taco which was better than the suadero, which was greasy and fatty, barely any meat. the beef tripe soup was deliciously hot. this place is quick and friendly just like the other one, but the restaurant is cold. read more

I had no idea this place existed right in my backyard until several months ago when I discovered it by accident trying to get back to 355 from Olde Town, and I had been meaning to try it ever since. I finally got around to it today, and I am so happy I did. I ordered Combo #1 - Two tacos, rice, beans, and a can of soda, which is not only an amazing deal for $7.95, the food is also absolutely delicious. The tacos are soft shell, with a choice of chicken, beef, or pork. I went for the chicken, which was shredded, tasty, and well seasoned. The salsa bar has an amazing selection of condiments, and I gave each of my tacos two different flavors by adding salsa verde (hotter than most) to one and red picante salsa to the other. The beans are charra style, and they and the rice both have a nice flavor. It's a tiny place, but a really pretty one, with traditional Mexican decor and a pleasant atmosphere. Taco Bar is a true best kept secret, off the beaten path, but not too difficult to find. I can't wait to go back and try Combo #1 with a different meat, or perhaps check out another menu item. read more

Specialties

As many people have said before, "I like Mexican food," without realizing that what they have considered to be Mexican food is anything but. The business mission is to provide unique and authentic Mexican food that many have yet to discover.

History

Established in 2002.

Taco Bar was established on February 14th, 2002 by the Valdivia Family. The restaurant has been providing the local community of Olde Towne Gaithersburg with authentic Mexican food found in the streets of Mexico City and the state of Jalisco. After 21 years of service, the restaurant suffered a fire caused by an arsonist back on September 17th, 2023. This caused the restaurant to shut its doors for 15 months due to the damaged caused by such fire. Finally, after many months, Taco Bar opened its doors once again to celebrate its re-opening and to commemorate its 23rd anniversary on February 14th 2024!

Veggie - The veggie were filled with cooked onion, mushroom and peppers. Although they were well prepared and held a lot of veggies, there was no seasoning, so the taste was pretty flat/boring. I had to rely on adding guac and some salsa for flavor. I was hoping the veggie would have some flavor without having to rely on sauces. Al Pastor - was very good. Guacamole - comes "market price". The side we got was $3, which I think was a good value. The guac was flavorful and was a nice portion. I am glad I had it to supplement the disappointing Veggie taco and the dryness of the Pollo. The corn tortillas were good. The place is nice and comfortable.

Beans/rice come standard on a lot of options. They have a lot of creative appetizers. The guapomole and guacaviche are both worth trying. Might be a tad pricey for the portions and quality but nothing unreasonable. Burritos are a little on the small side for my expectations. During days when Rio is busy and dinner hours this place is so exceptionally busy so expect it to be loud. Everyone and their cousin has their birthday here and the wait staff are seemingly constantly singing and banging on instruments some days. The wait staff are exceptional for this type of restaurant- the reason why is likely due to so many experienced wait staff working here. And here's where we arrive at my issues with Guapo's and where it goes from a borderline 5* to a rapidly dropping 3*: Guapo's prioritizes turning tables over customer experience. And it RUINS the experience. The staff rush you to order, if you order dinner/appetizer there's a very good chance you'll be two bites into an app when your dinner arrives. Their tables are too small and too tightly packed- especially in the outside area. You can't really fit two meals, drinks, and an app on these tables for 4. Guapo's is a high volume money printer and it's become so bad I prefer looking at other options lately.

The staff was nice, the restaurant was clean, but the tacos I had were terrible. I had chicken and cubed steak but the meat was dry and the tortillas tasted like plastic. I liked how they didn't add toppings but had a toppings bar. The toppings I had were good but I couldn't eat more than one bite of those tortillas.
