Home to the "funny taco," Taco Bob's is a local chain in the SW MI area. Nate and I stopped in for a quick dinner before heading back to Grand Rapids recently. This downtown location has a full bar but is a pretty small space. Order at the counter and then pick up your food when it's ready. It's a simple spot but I was happy with our food. I got a funny taco with beef and a Bousfield blast, and Nate got a funny taco combo with two tacos, rice, beans, chips, and a drink. Our food was ready quickly and everything was hot. The funny taco is a hard shell taco wrapped in a soft shell with nacho cheese in between, with your choice of protein (chicken, beef, or beans). The textures and flavors of this taco are just so delicious and perfect for a late night meal or quick snack. I really liked the Bousfield blast, which is basically a burrito with cheese and protein. It was super hot and really tasty! I'd skip the rice but the beans were flavorful and great for eating with chips. It's not gourmet food by any means but I appreciated that everything seemed fresh. I was craving some tacos and stopped into Taco Bobs and I'm so happy I did! The beef was seasoned so well and the tacos hit the spot. I also loved the sauces to try them with. The service was also really good and the food came out within a few minutes. I will definitely be thinking about this tacos again and crave them! read more

The two ladies that open the Taco Bob's establishment. In the mall Downtown. Have the lousiest Customer Service. Every time I come in at 10:30 which it clearly states on Google. They have an attitude. They were complaining that I had the nerve to be there at 10:30. They are always rude and act like they don't even want to be there. The Manager was talking out loud about how she had to fire another employee to give someone else hours. She started swearing in the back I could clearly hear her. Big shout out to the lovely ladies at Taco Bob's downtown! I'm a dasher and got caught outside in the rain waiting for my partner to pull up. She got lost. Okay, so I am from Kalamazoo and grew up on Taco Bob's and have been to every location (so each one is getting a review)! More times than I will admit. People were blown away when Taco Bell came out with the Double Decker years ago, PLEASE.... that has nothing on Taco Bob's Funny Taco. Hands down, the best! Every single time I come home to visit, it is 100% required I go here and most of the time it is more than once. It is what it is. I have Ben obsessed with it even now. The downtown location use to actually just be a walk up window back in the day when I worked down there but now it is a full blown, multi-level spot. If in the Kalamazoo area, make it part of the plan for a visit at one of the 6 locations. read more

Order from portage rd Taco Bob's instead. I've never had an issue with a order from portage rd, decided to give this place a chance for a delivery order since they are closer to my home. Never again. The cheesy tacos had next to no cheese, barely any sour cream, were covered in grease, and were not a filled as ones from portage road. The chips also seamed a bit stale and the order was cold. The delivery containers were in the bag side ways and the burrito which is heavier was stacked on the tacos, crushing the container. The contents of the containers were spilled over as well. The door dash driver complained about how the food was packaged as well. I called to report it to the store, but all I got was that they were busy. If you are too busy to make cheesy tacos cheesy then maybe don't offer delivery. read more

Next time when you're on the Mall and want an inexpensive quick bite from some place that isn't a brewery, I suggest you go to Taco Bob's. Keep in mind, this is Americanized Mexican food so don't go there thinking you're going to find some corn husk tamales or lengua. You go to Taco Bobs for funny tacos, funny tostadas and cheap house margaritas. Sure they have other things on the menu, but I've never felt the need to order anything different because the food is just that good. So what makes a taco funny? It's pretty much a standard hard shell taco with your basic fillings (veggie option also available!) wrapped in a soft tortilla with nacho cheese inside. It's pretty much their take on Taco Bell's cheesy gordita crunch. Also, their funny tostada is their take on the crunchwrap supreme. To wash it all down, I recommend a house margarita served on the rocks with salt. For as much as I love the Kalamazoo brewery scene, it's nice to take a break from all that beer. You'll find that break in the basement or the upstairs of Taco Bob's. They also have TVs so if you want to catch the game without all that sports bar razzle dazzle come here. Lastly, the service is always top notch. The food is great but so are the servers. It's because of them I keep coming back for those "house margs" and my funny veggie tostadas. Taco Bob's is a place you go for not authentic Mexican but better than Taco Bell and faster than a restaurant. I love the nachos and the funny tacos. This place is nice, the staff are friendly, there is a bar there and they do happy hour specials. If you want inexpensive food and quick and you are close to their locations, I would recommend it. I go to the downtown Kalamazoo because it is close to work. Cost: $2.09 for a Funny Taco (which is a classic hard shell taco wrapped in a warm cheesy soft shell taco). The Beef Nachos $5.09. Atmosphere: Fun, friendly and welcoming. Overall: I give this place 4 stars. If you are looking for authentic don't go here. If you are looking for super healthy. Don't go here. But go here if you are looking for good, inexpensive, better than taco bell and fun food. Almost all the negative reviews are people who expected something that it is not. So I wanted to be real. I just wanted to give a huge shout out for ruining my 40th birthday and leaving 15 people stranded for dinner this past Saturday. You closed with no warning knowing we were coming at 6:30. My husband "reserved" the basement and was told that it would be no problem! Given that it was the start of craft beer week and the Bells run was happening, no one was able to accommodate us last minute. I cannot believe how unprofessional it was. I have to say when we first walked in the people were very nice. We sat down to eat and saw that they had a tequila sunrise special for $3 so we ordered 2 each. At first they said they were out and said they could make it with pineapple juice. The young man was very nice and was helping us. It wasn't until the female manager came by that there was a problem. They gave us one drink and said they ran out of juice. In the picture there's literally juice right there. The manager asked what I wanted instead so I said sour amaretto. When we go to pay they said $10. It's not the price it's the principle. If we wanted the social and your out of 5 different juices why wouldn't you just give me then drink for the same price. The manager was rude when I respectfully asked why. She had a snooty rude attitude and was like why you don't want to spend $10! This is when I started to get upset because I was already accepting that the tacos were very mediocre but on top of that they're trying to overcharge me. After she yelled at me I kindly returned the drinks and she took $5 from me for the tequila sunrise that was suppose to be $3. Sorry but average! We ordered two of the combo options to try almost everything. The burrito wins among all the options. The tacos which I was cery excited to try were not even juicy, it felt very dry and I did not want to crave for more. The chicken quesadillas were less than average; I am not sure if this is how it is all the time or because we were the last customers on a friday night. I was kind of disappointed. OK, so here's the deal. The familiarity of the food at Taco Bob's is what draws most locals. If you're looking for authentic tacos or contemporary Mexican food, forget it. I like Taco Bob's. I come here on the days I study at the library after work. The food here is consistent, tasty, and inexpensive. I think the staff here is friendly too. I get the cheezy taco when I come here and it is tasty everytime. It is nice to get a hot meal here on a cold winter day. Taco Bob's gets a star for consistency, another star for tasty food, another star for friendly staff, another star because food is inexpensive, and another star because it is conveniently located in downtown Kalamazoo. My girlfriend and I were in the mood for tacos and we wanted to try something new in the Kalamazoo area. After a couple of recommendations, we landed at Taco Bob's. I was hoping for more of a sit-down style restaurant, but Taco Bob's seemed more like fast serve. At 6:30 on a Thursday you'd expect it would be packed for dinner -- there was absolutely no one there. I asked the worker what he recommended because I had never been there before. He said I should try the Funny Tacos, Taco Bob's version of the infamous Gordita Crunch served at Taco Bell. I got the meal which includes rice, refried beans, chips, and a drink. I opened my styrofoam container and started to dig in. The taco meat tasted like the stuff I had at my school cafeteria, bland. It included iceberg lettuce, which tasted a day old, and nacho cheese sauce that seemed familiar (Meijer brand queso, I knew it!). Well I said to myself, how can you mess up refried beans? I tried one bite, it tasted like detergent. Lastly, the rice was so over-cooked I couldn't take another bite knowing I may lose a tooth. I was heavily disappointed in my meal and I'll most likely never be taking a trip there again. Taco Bob's is kinda like an upper scale taco bell in some regards, but if you truly weigh out the menu options, they fall a little short of even the fast food giant. At first glance you seem to be getting a fresh made, careful mexican-american dish, but then you see shelves of tin cans of sauce, refried beans, and other "Mexican" sides. They don't make their own tortilla chips or guac (they buy it in big plastic bags). What I really see is a fast food restaurant housed in a downtown building, portraying itself to be authentic fare. Taco Bob's recently won Kalamazoo's best taco, so Team VP decided we should try them out. We left absolutely astounded that Taco Bob's had even registered on any type of taco radar because we both had bellyaches. I had two plain soft chicken tacos which include lettuce, tomato and cheese. Mr. MVP had three hard beef tacos which also include the standard lettuce, tomato and cheese. What we were expecting were exceptionally fantastic homemade tacos that had been assembled with at least some care, but what we received was the exact opposite. My chicken was salty hunks of what I think was canned unseasoned faux "meat". Mr. MVP had the same luck with his over-processed, grainy, and under seasoned ground beef. The vegetables, although passable, were unripe tomato and tasteless iceberg lettuce. I promise the cheese was cheese product. These tacos were pathetic and while I appreciate our bellies are typically used to organic, non-gmo, and antibiotic free eating, Taco Bob's left us both feeling queasy. I have no idea what Kalamazoo is thinking voting them into the top, but there has to be a better option. read more

Not classic Mexican cuisine, but for the mid west excellent tasty fare. The staff is very friendly, quick and efficient. The establishment is clean and seating is available. The food is flavorful and ample. Excellent value for those on a budget. It's just an ordinary taco, moderately prices and made assembly line style. This particular location is incredibly busy, so I tend not to go there because it's not worth the wait for a taco.
