If you like it really spicy, ask for the special sauce they keep under the counter. Chavas gets an extra star for being open really late. That's huge in Terre Haute, especially downtown. Dined 12/14/2012 In town for my graduation from ISU's post-grad program. The restaurant is walking distance from the university and our hotel. We stopped for lunch and were impressed with the food. Mexican restaurants in the US are generally Tex-Mex not truly Mexican, no difference here. My rating combines the atmosphere, cleanliness, and friendliness of staff. If you need a quick Mexican food fix around campus, this is your spot. The food isn't amazing but it can be tasty depending on what combo you craft. I also love spicy foods and their hot salsa is actually hot. My only real complaint is you just don't seem to get enough meat, especially if you don't eat the typicall rice and beans filler like me because of my diet. I've been to Chavas a couple different times now and the staff have always been quiet but cordial. This is a good quick-eats place, it certainly beats fast food Taco Bell and the moratorium that is Taco Casita. Love the cafeteria-style choice you get for each dish you orde, akin to Subway or Qdoba. There are tons of Mexican-American food places in town, and this (while not the best) is probably frequented more because of its ease and cost. The big problem here is location. There is little parking from the street, and the parking at the garage with purchase isn't readily apparent. There is no reason to stop here to possibly pay the high parking the downtown Terre Haute prides itself on. read more

Im going to make this simple. If you go to Chavas expecting a Mexican restaurant you'll be disappointed. My first time going my friend described it as a qudoba that was owned by Mexicans. That what I expected and that's what I got. I am a huge fan of chorizo and if you order it in your burrito or on your nachos they cook it fresh every time so I've not experienced any "old" or weird tasting meat. Personally I love this place. I LOVE Mexican food, just not here. I orderd a three taco plate with rice. Shredded Beef, Grilled Chicken, and Chorizo. In all three tacos, the tortilla was cold, the meat portion was small and didnt have much flavor (chorizo looked like ground hamburger), and barely warm..( ** call the Health Dept). In all three tacos, the pico de gallo dollop was bigger than the entree. The celantro rice was good. $ 9 for three tacos, rice and a drink! yeech! This place is new, so maybe the bugs have to be worked out and might improve. The location downtown will cater to area weekday business lunch and students from the college. I've been visiting Chava's for over three years now for their delicious Mexican food. I can't speak for the rice or beans, but the tacos are my favorite. Both the shredded beef and the chicken are excellent and the portions and prices are better than what you get at a Chipotle or other taco chain. This place is quick and (relatively) cheap Mexican food. Chipotle style make your own burrito/taco/etc. Only things I ding it for are the booths, a lot of which are old and in need of repair, and the fact you have to pay for water if it's after like 11PM. read more

I love spicy and exotic, but Chavas is neither one. I went there thinking I would be pleased as the other restaurants that is owned by this gentleman are good. This one is not up to the same caliber. The food is never at the right temp. The "spices" are lame. It's pricey and yes...the people that work there are VERY rude. I have found bones in my chicken burrito TWICE!!! and on both occasions they did nothing. They just stared at me until I walked away.
