We were visiting Phoenix for my boyfriend's 30th birthday with a group of 10 people and Taco Guild did not disappoint. We made a reservation and our high top table was waiting on time. Our waiter, Mike, had amazing energy and provided top tier service. The salsa trio that was served with fresh chips was an 8/10. The pineapple penicillin was about a 6/10. I expected a more smoky flavor from the mezcal. The queso was amazing! The cherrywood Steak taco was a 10/10!! And the staff also brought out a key lime creme brûlée while we sung Happy Birthday. I came here tonight for the first time but certainly not the last. I really enjoyed this place. If you're looking for a casual place to chill with friends or a quick meal, this is the place. It's got a great and lively vibe. It was busy but there was enough seating when we walked in. The entrance can be a little bit tricky to find if you've never been as it's directly behind the Starbucks vs in the strip mall. But you enter into this open space that's just bustling. The building was originally a church built in the 1890's. The stain glass is original to the building and just lovely. As soon as we sat down, the server brought nice fresh tortilla chips with 3 types of salsa. The yellow one had a strong kick that was just addictive. She was very attentive and made sure to regularly fill glasses. I couldn't stop eating the damn chips, they were that gooood. I ordered the ceviche and it was the perfect serving size-large! The shrimp was generous and the veggies were fresh. It had diced jicama that was refreshing because it wasn't expected. I just wish that they offered mayo to spread on the tortilla chips when scooping up the ceviche. I didn't order the tacos but they looked delicious. They are pricey at about $7-10/each and are a la carte. The next time I come, I promise to try one. Supposedly the street corn is very good, according to my friends. I had highs and lows here! Their drinks were so delicious. I had a prickly pear margarita. The prickly pear was very strong and I loved it! Typically it is hard to tell that it even has a flavor in. I also loved the guild fries! The guac was great and this was fun that it was a bit different. The chipotle aioli was perfection. The not so great part was honestly the tacos. I had a chicken tinga taco and a Jackson taco. The Jackson was good but I felt like it might not have been prepared very well. The pork belly was a little cold and the taco did not seem like it was grilled enough on either side. The chicken tinga had good flavors but was a little dry and was missing something. Could have just been here on an off night because I see how good it could be. Overall I would give it another shot but maybe for apps and drinks! read more

The joy of this place is that it offers something different. It's not a fully authentic Mexican food menu, but it's not trying to be. I go for the chipotle cherry steak taco and their addictive, tangy strawberry salsa. The drinks, especially during happy hour, are also great. However, the ambiance of the former church is really what makes me want to bring visitors to Phoenix here. Beware: the deals on taco Tuesday make this place pretty busy. The food was pretty good, the tacos were definitely on the pricier side (luckily we came in for happy hour so I think it was $2 off tacos + starters) but I think the experience of eating in a used-to-be church and the taste made up for it. It was definitely a different experience sitting inside an old church with those walls and stained glass windows, all while eating tacos and listening to Pitbull LOL. My family liked the scallop taco, the baja fish, and the wings (my family has come back for their wings, and usually they only like dry rub). It was also nice that we were immediately served chips and 3 different salsas of varying spice levels -- our server came back with a second batch of chips once we finished the first, so they must've been 'bottomless.' As for the dessert, IT WAS SO GOOD! Highly recommend trying the stuffed churro (it's more like a churro donut though), the ice cream and strawberry on the side was a good addition to this order. Overpriced but good food. Their cocktails are 80% ice so ask for no ice or don't order. Get their nacho starter, it's so delicious. Creamy cheese and beans with a nice briney kick from the pickled jalapeños, along with tender meat and a good crunch from the chips. I just go there to eat that. I'm leaving one star based on how I was treated by the bartender, he watched me walk in and did not greet me whatsoever then proceeded to help the group that came in after me at a table so I asked to be seated at a table because he was flat out ignoring me. Luckily I got a different server other than him but I was very put off by the blatant disrespect. Such a cool experience! They lean into the old church vibe just the right amount. The inside was beautiful. The food was delicious and they had really unique flavors of tacos! If you buy 3 you get a side for free which was cool. The drinks were also REALLY good! If you want to go for dinner on a weekend, definitely make reservations! In an old church converted to a restaurant, you get the stained glass, pews, a huge chandelier, great bar area and even live entertainment to make the experience different than any other. We opted for the tacos . . . brisket, fish, carnitas were all very good . . . and sides of street corn. This was my first visit back to Taco Guild in quite some time. I loved this place when it first opened and even after more than a decade now, they're still a top notch spot for tacos, margaritas and other southwest fare in perhaps the most interesting setting in which you'll ever dine - an old church cathedral replete with the original stained glass. This was a lunch visit with some colleagues, neither of which had ever been here. But they will both be back and so will I. I had the chile relleno, which is beef chorizo/Ground beef and plantain stuffed poblano pepper, topped with queso & tequila soaked raisins and served with rice & beans. Absolutely stellar. Excellent flavor uniquely punctuated by the tequila raisins. They are a twist for sure but don't be shy, the dish was absolutely fantastic. Service was also excellent and everything was expedient, making this a solid option for an upscale lunch where you need to get in, get your lunch on and get back to the office. Wow. Put this at the top of your list of places to eat. The food was exceptional- all of it. The service was great. They first brought out chips with three kinds of salsa. I was prepared to prefer one of the salsas over the rest but they were all equally delicious. I particularly like the one that had pineapple in it..had never tasted anything like it. So good. I had a margarita and my friend had a Paloma. So good. We shared the MOLCAJETE- which the menu said was for two but it was substantially more than the two of us could eat. I told the server it should be for four- he explained that it previously was listed as being for four people but that it wasn't enough. ‍ I couldn't say enough about how good the food was at this place- so I'll stop here - but if you're considering it, you should absolutely go. read more

This was my second trip to Taco Guild, and I'm going to have to come more often. The habanero salsa packs quite a kick, but the flavor is wonderful. A real fruitiness that more than makes up for the intense heat and sweat pouring off your head.' I decided on two tacos. I had the Jackson, and the Chipotle Cherry Steak tacos. I was a little wary of the $8.50/$9.50 price. The tacos didn't really win any prizes for presentation. It was a little clumsy. The steak taco looked decent, but was falling all over the plate. I cleaned it up a little for the photo. The Jackson just looked like a slice of meat barely tucked into a wet tortilla. HOWEVER, both of these tacos had more flavor packed in them than any tacos I've had before. It didn't matter what they looked like they were amazingly delicious! Unfortunately the Jackson might have been missing some ingredients... All I saw was the sliced pork belly. There did not appear or taste like there was any oaxacan cheese blend, fried onion, and poblano straws at all, unless they were a scant little bit and had fallen out next to the other taco. Look at the photo. It's just pork belly and a tortilla with a little cilantro clinging to it... At least the pork belly and the consume was bursting with flavor and quite enjoyable. The Chipotle Cherry Steak appeared to be more complete. Though I can't say I noticed any bleu cheese. The flavor might have blended with the intense flavor of the steak and I just didn't notice. There was plenty of poblano and onion straws, as promised, and the flavor of the Chipotle cherry glazed skirt steak was bold and delicious. I highly recommend this place for a great lunch or dinner. Just inspect your food when it comes out. I took off one star because I'm so sure now that ingredients were missing from an $8.50 taco. Tried taco guild for thw first time tonight before a concert. The building is the 2nd oldest in Phoenix so we wanted to check it out. Super cool vibe, the stained glass is beautiful. We have the question with chorizo and it has a huge bowl and full of flavor. The 3 salsa were yummy too, the carrot one was amazing: sweet and spicy. The service was great as well. Highly recommend this savory and delicious taco Baja Fish Taco on Flour tortilla - 3.5/5 - This taco was so large but lacked from flavor from the fish. The crispy fish was also soggy when I got to it so if you order it, eat it first! Street Style Carnitas Taco on Corn tortilla - 4/5 - Loved this taco because of its simplicity and amount of carnitas but carnitas was semi-dry and I needed to add my street corn to rehydrate it. Side: Mexican Street Corn (spicy) - 5/5 - Loved this side pairing and it wasn't overly spicy, had just enough of a kick! My server, Mike, was phenomenal! He was so quick, friendly, and attentive. We took our family to Taco Guild for dinner last night--there were 11 of us--and we had such a great experience! There was a little confusion with our reservation at first, but the staff handled it so well and completely made up for it with great customer service and amazing food. I wish I could remember everyone's names who helped our table, but Missy really stood out. She was so friendly, engaging, and made sure our whole group was taken care of. She truly helped make our family dinner a wonderful experience. This weekend was Old People Foodie Crew meetup. In essence it's a group of us that like to hangout & eat. The planned restaurant time on Yelp was wrong for our initial restaurant choice so I always establish a backup restaurant. The backup was Taco Guild. I had not been since they initially opened years ago. Two of the crew don't drink but two of us do Michelada was good, but the little margarita was fire. The piping hot chips (YES) bomb & the 3 salsas bomb Favorite was the Habanero. Beans yummy but that cherry pepper grilled burrito took me out. The meat was so good my friend ordered a taco with cherry peppered meat after sampling my burrito. My buddy loved the ceviche and his side of Mexican corn. We had a good time & service was Good. Taco Guild is a good Mexican Restaurant located in Phoenix Arizona. The decor of the restaurant is unique. The building was previously a church, so there are incredible stained glass windows in the restaurant. The menu consists of Mexican dishes taken to a new level, for an appetizer I ordered Green Chili Queso, with jalapeño and bacon; the queso was exceptional. I ordered several tacos for my entree, one taco stood out from the rest. My favorite taco was the Lobster Taco, with large chunks of lobster throughout the taco. Let's start with the decor. This place is set up like an old church! It's a marvel to see! My pictures won't do it justice. You can even sit in pews. I believe it was a repurposed churches but I am not sure. Next the complementary chips and salsa with 4 different salsa selections was excellent! Everytime a Latin restaurant gives chips and salsa for free I give instant class points! Last the tacos! I had the Barbados and the chipotle cherry skirt steak tacos. Before you order, you should know they pack these tacos with ALOT of meat. If you usually order 3 tacos... 2 is plenty! The Chipotle Cherry was delicious and the Barbacoa was a close second and I was STUFFED after those two. First time visiting Taco Guild and the ambiance is charming as the restaurant is in an old church. The meal started with a small portion of three salsas that was very good. We ordered the following items: Green Chili Queso - Excellent and large portion Chicharrones - Excellent (Served poppin and hoppin right from the fryer). Try the Chicharrones in the queso and it was awesome and it was also a large portion. Chile Relleno - Not my favorite. The ground beef had a spice combination that will not be for everyone. I probably would go in a different direction next time Rice-Below Average. Dry and in need of an upgrade Beans- Excellent. Very tasty Street Corn (Guild Style) - Average with a little spicy zip. Dear Management, I am writing to share my recent disappointing experience at your establishment. I rarely leave negative feedback, especially for local neighborhood spots, but the treatment my party received was egregious enough that I will not be returning. Our group arrived in stages starting at 9:00 PM. When our second set of guests arrived to join the first two, the hostess was visibly exasperated and rudely asked, "Where are you all coming from?" By the time I arrived with my client, bringing our total to six, we were immediately told the kitchen was closing at 10:00 PM and we needed to order right away. We informed the waiter that six additional guests would be joining us for drinks, and we proactively ordered extra appetizers at 9:15 PM so they would have food before the kitchen closed. Despite our efforts to be cooperative, the staff remained hostile. When we asked if there was a problem, we were told the staff had a long day and was short-handed. When I requested to speak with a manager to understand how we could have better handled the situation, the bartender refused my request. Instead, he scolded me for bringing a party that grew from six to twelve after 9:00 PM. I find this reaction unnecessary, as any other group of six walking in off the street would have been seated and served. Ultimately, all food orders were placed by 9:30 PM, and our entire party had paid and departed shortly after 10:00 PM. We even left a 25% tip for our waiter, who managed to remain professional despite the clear tension from the rest of the staff. Fan of this trendy eatery since it's opening. The building is one of the best executions of a repurposed business ever. Beautifully done interior. Much of the former church architecture remains with modern Resturant improvements Parking is often a challenge as it shares with multiple buildings. Staff members are helpful to first time visitors to assist with choices and ordering. I always recommend their sampler tacos giving you a change to "experience" a verity of meats and respective seasonings. This was one of the first "gourmet street tacos " restaurants in the valley. Four of us went on day one of a new menu, I was excited and disappointed, maybe they had messed with something great? What we ate was excellent. The green chili queso was top notch and the mango margarita was delicious. Then the tacos and street corn came. I had scallops and chicken, after deciding to play one safe and take a chance with the other. Both were A+. The street corn was probably the second best I've ever had in my life. Three taco sauces were great- the red and verde were both good. The third one? A honey habanero, with carrots? I didn't think I even wanted to try it. But I did. And wow! However, if you're seeking traditional carne asada tacos or flavors, this is not the spot. I enjoyed the flavors of the various complimentary salsas; house (mild), jalapeno, habanero (hottest), and one I did not catch the name of, but was lime forward. Eating the habanero salsa definitely left a tickle in my throat. As a group we split Guacamole ($8). We opted not to add jalapeno bacon or chorizo for an additional cost. The guac was ok but sorely lacking salt. I ordered 3 tacos a la carte: Baja Fish on corn ($8.50), Crispy Pork Belly ($8.50), and Chipotle Cherry Steak ($9). With the order of 3 tacos, I received $2 off the Guild style street corn ($5 w/$2 off). The Baja fish on homemade corn was a huge disappointment. The corn tortilla was very thick and pita-like. The lack of sauce left for a very dry mouthful. The Crispy Pork Belly was NOT crispy and had not been rendered so instead it was rubbery. Putting soggy pork belly in a tortilla doesn't make it fusion. The Chipotle Cherry Steak was the best of the bunch, and one of the most popular tacos per our waiter. The beef was cooked well. I am just not a fan of the cherry flavor. The Guild style street corn was fine but it was drowning in liquid. I'm glad to have experienced Taco Guild to say that I have, but I won't be frequenting. read more
