The pibil was good but not as flavorful as I have had elsewhere. The black beans lacked flavor entirely--I would have preferred a bit of salt or onion in the cooking process. My dining partner had the tacos and said they were forgettable and he was not satisfied if the amount of food for the price. If you are looking for a fun atmosphere you will enjoy yourself. Came here for the first time on a double date with a friend and his wife. I had the Chicken Mole Enchiladas and my Fiancé had the Carne Asada Tostada. We both loved the food. Excellent service, superb food, a selection of eating areas: inside or outside with a heater now that it is winter. I had a vegetable enchilada, with a side salad which was superb. Reasonably priced too. If you want just soft music, a peaceful setting to have a conversation over lunch, Taco Jane's is the place. Excellent staff too. It has been there for 25 years. This a definite gem, casual, friendly, yet amazing food. We ordered one of the most simple, traditional Mexican dishes.... dyi burritos for 25 people. We had heard many good recommendations about TJ but were completely surprised at how much better it tasted than we expected. The beans, sauce, hand made tortillas, sauteed vegetable were incredible, and probably the best guacamole ever. Everything was fresh and perfectly cooked. This is the blandest Mexican food I've eaten in a long time. Starting with the chips and salsa - the black salsa was very bland, the red salsa tasted like it was from a can - just no interesting flavor to speak of. I didn't realize it was possible to find a really bad Mexican restaurant but I did tonight at Taco Janes. Even though it's a sit down restaurant you order as if it was take out and pay when ordering which is quite unusual. Leaving a tip before getting the food isn't right because tips are for service given. The food just wasn't good especially compared to any other Mexican restaurant in Marin. The guacamole wasn't tasty, the black salsa was bland and the main dish - a chicken mole tostada- was terrible. They threw what seemed to be store-bought cole slaw along with cold lettuce and a few pieces of chicken on a cold tortilla with no salsa. Worst Mexican dish I ever had anywhere. A lot of bad reviews and I guess the place stays in business because many customers just don't know what good Mexican food is. read more

Fish tacos are super good same goes with most of their tacos. Everything else just misses the mark in my opinion. Plain black beans that you can make better at home. Rice is mediocre and super dry most of the time. The salsa is ok but missing the mark on flavor. For me to recommend this place I would suggest ordering the tacos Al la cart. Taco Jane's is high on my list of favorite restaurants of all time. The food is always top notch. There's a great variety and everything is beautiful and delicious. The restaurant has a great environment. I always love sitting outside whenever possible. It's always the perfect place to go for dinner after a day of hiking on Mount Tam. I highly recommend the Mateo cake as an appetizer or side dish. One of the specialties unique to Taco Jane's, its a delicious cornmeal patty on a bed of the signature fire roasted salsa. As someone who is typically not a fan of cooked fish, I was floored by how tasty the snapper dishes were. I'd recommend the Red Snapper Burrito and tacos with flying colors. The restaurant has really nice, with fun lighting, cool photos of Cuba and cars, and the table mats and music were great also! Before we had even sat down, the guacamole and ceviche were already there! Everything got to us super super quick! Service was a 10/10! This spot has the best Red Snapper Burrito and hands down guacamole in Marin. I order this every time (have tried other things), however, have learned to just stick with these two and not once have I been disappointed. They also make a nice French press, homemade hot sauce (ask for it) and interesting charred tomatillo salsa I haven't found anywhere else. He is always there and takes the time to come to the table to say hi. The food is consistently GREAT and high quality. The Snapper tacos have nearly an entire filet in them. What a cool little place! For some reason, when I was heading to Taco Janes, I had an image of a lady serving tacos through a window. This is NOT Taco Janes. We walked in to hear live Latin Jazz being played. The room was airy, and had outdoor seating. The decor was cool California / Mexican and felt like the perfect comfortable setting for Tacos and Sangria on a hot summer night. The waitress was very kind and sweet, as was the bartender. They both served us with appreciation and love for the food. We had the snapper tacos, and the Red Snapper Burrito. I even asked for some shrimp in the Snapper Burrito. The kids had the rice and beam burrito (and didn't leave any behind ). The sauce and burrito were so satisfying, along with my cold Dos Equis. I was very pleased. My wonderful date throughly enjoyed the Snapper Tacos with her Margarita. We're looking forward to going back, and enjoying a margarita night (and more fish tacos) and very soon !!! read more

I guess I should tell my husband I'm leaving him, because it seems as if I have found a new love in Taco Jane's. Seriously, if I could run away into the sunset with this place I would. Coming in on a Saturday night I was greeted by a wonderfully friendly server without any wait. Even though they have a great outdoor patio (my one requirement when choosing a place to eat BTW) I opted to sit at the intimate bar inside. I was given excellent service and was able to watch as Miguel (the owner?) was personable and welcoming to each customer that came in. He even recognized a woman who came in to order for take out and asked her about her children! Taco Jane's has been open about 6 years and now serves mixed drinks along with their selection of beer on tap, wine and sangria. They even have their own garden where many herbs are grown to use in their drinks. The Basil Paloma used newly picked basil and fresh squeezed grapefruit. It was truly an amazing drink. I also saw another drink go out with entire stem of rosemary in it. I was given chips before I ordered accompanied by authentic Zanahorias en escambeche, pickled carrots and peppers, as well as a hearty black bean dip. The Mateo Cake I ordered was perfectly sweet like mama's corn bread and the mole it came bedded on was just the right amount of spicy. I also had the Mole Tamale, even though I don't normally like mole, it was so good I actually got food on my phone somehow. My expectations were not exactly high going in to this spot since San Anselmo and Marin are not exactly known for their Mexican food, but either way I was excited to grab myself a Corona and have a decent meal in a god location before a shopping day. I think they hit the nail on the head with that description: it was decent, nothing special, but it satisfied my cravings and allowed me to take a breather on a really hot day. Staff were all very attentive, quick and so that was a big bonus. The enchiladas lacked any unique flavor or quality, and it just had way too much cheese which ended up being a big reason why other flavors were lost. One really unique thing about this spot though is their salsa. I have totally no idea what it is, but it was black colored rather than red and I've never tasted one like that before and really enjoyed it. Absolutely love Taco Janes! Their steak enchiladas and steak tostada are my favorites. I also enjoy the cheese enchiladas when I'm not feeling meat. I've tried their gauc (delicious) and their black bean soup as well during a cold day. My friends always get the red snapper burrito and they devour it. I wish so much that I also loved the food because I would make this my go-to. I don't know how the food comes out looking so great, and basically has zero taste. I got the chicken mole tostada. Mole was pretty good, though it had no seasoning, so I did add several shakes of salt. The tostada was on top of shredded iceberg lettuce in some kind of dressing, maybe a mayonnaise base? I don't know. I kept eating it thinking it must taste like something, but it didn't. LOL. read more
