Usually good food, quick, and good price. Today had the lunch chicken quesadilla. Opened it up and looked really dark. Asked the waitress if it was chicken and she said yes. 3.75 stars This place has been around for a long long time. I remember my grandma and aunts always talking about "the restaurant with the double car out front" that they use to go eat at. I come from a long leniage of tex-mex food lovers so hence why I have high expectations. I know its SET, so one can only hope for so much but I must say, that this place is tasty. I love the decor, very old school feeling with lots of pics of old movie stars. My dad was also impressed with how large the restaurant was; it is quite spacious. Ok, on to the food. Very good tasty salsa and queso, so off to a good start. I really like how they add 3 or 4 sugary cinnamon chips in with the basket of chips, unique. The enchiladas and tamales were good, queso flameado was super chessy without being too greasy and large tostadas. My only complaint, is how pricey it is for just a regular ole' tex mex restaurant. I love the setup of this place as the restaurant looks like it was built from an actual house because the interior sure does imitate the interior of a house. I have seen this place countless times driving by but never thought to dine here until this day and am very glad I did as their food was far just below average for me to even consider eating here again in the future. I went with my boyfriend so we ordered a variety of foods for us to share and eat. We are very hard critics when we eat food at restaurants and other food places so we were talking about how their queso was good except that it was way too thick and stuff that every time we dipped our chips in, it would break... *sad face* I also ordered the "Summer Special" and my bf the "Beef Burrito Dinner." In all honesty, I could've made the special by myself in which I wasted $10 on and my bf's burrito was a waste in which we finished both our meals (for the sake of the costs) but we both later got sick afterward. read more

my taco Al carbon was extremely dry my beans came with no cheese on them so I ask for some I was charged $1.50 for a sprinkle of cheese and my taco was so dry I asked for a sauce or Garvey which they charged me $3.50 for and there was only a table spoon of nacho cheese sauce so my beans that tasted like they were from a can my dry taco and my over spiced rice that should have coast me $8.00 plus my sweet tea at $2.85 coast me $21.12 I did however get a free refill on my sweet tea the food was awful. I believe the Golden Traingle has more Tex-Mex restaurants per square mile than anywhere else in the world. They are everywhere! I've probably been to 10-12 and this one is right up there as one of the best in the area. First of all it's a family owned business that has been around for 50 plus years. It's an institution around them parts. The 1st thing I noticed about the place was that it looks like a big ass house that's been converted. The next thing is the cool car out front painted up all Team 'Merica like. On a second glance I noticed it's actually the front end of 2 cars welded together. I'm digging the quirkiness. I walk and boooooo no bar. That means a table for 1 and that always feels awkward especially in a quiet restaurant like this one. Quiet is good for a date, bad for a single fella. The waitress brought out the usual chips and salsa and at 1st glance a few chips looked burnt. They were actually cinammon flavored and kind of like a pre-dessert. A nice touch. The chips were warm and the salsa was on the spicy side. I ordered the fajita dinner for 13.99 and it's slightly smaller than the fajita's for 1. I got the mixed fajitas, stick with the chicken. The chicken is smokey and flavorfull but the beef is of poor quality and full of gristle. At least mine was. It comes with guacamole and pico. Cheese and sour cream will set you back another 1.50. Odd. It also comes with the standard rice and beans but the rice has more of lime taste than usual. The star is the homemade tortillas! Delish! I'll be back especially after I saw they had banana margaritas.....woah read more

I can't wear a mask because my toddler rips it off my face and my mom has a medical condition and can't wear one. We were yelled at very rudely about it. Been eating here since they were on Bluebonnet, in Jefferson City and this location about 45 years all told. In the last few years we've seen the prices creep up (as expected) but past some other tex-mex spots. Tonight will be our last visit here. $6 small queso was *very* watery as has been on way too many visits and the #10 beef quesadillas was served (again) with burnt flour tortillas. Even Juan couldn't save this (and past) disasters as he served them without conscience (but with a smile). Sorry Delores, there are many that's better. read more

My favorite Mexican restaurants aren't the fanciest or the newest or the cleanest. They are small family owned places that have normally been in business for a long time. They have simple menus that the do very well. They have "atmosphere" because they don't try to be too polished or professional. They just make really good food. Taco Rey in Nederland, Texas is one of my favorite Mexican joints for all the above. They surely aren't fancy but they've got real atmosphere. The have a simple menu that they do very very well. I have eaten there way too often and they have always good service. I am a big fan of their basics.... enchiladas, burritos, fajitas are all first class. Served fast and fresh. Consistently good. The hidden gem on the menu is the taco baked potato. It's an enormous baked potato with all the trimmings covered in spicy ground beef. Split it with someone unless you are super man. I've really only got 2 concerns... They are family owned so the will close for weeks at a time for the family vacation and they don't open on weekends. Love, love this restaurant, even though I live close I don't make it here enough as I go to college in Beaumont...but this is an awesome place to find good, authentic Tex-Mex of the home-cooked variety. The place is as cute and homey as can be with friendly waitstaff, it's a converted house decorated with all kinds of interesting pics, and don't miss the famous painted Taco Rey car parked on the side!! Favorites of their food include their tamales (yum!), enchiladas, tacos (of course!), and ooooh....the guacamole. Just the right amount of seasonings and very fresh! The only star missing in my review is for some the accompaniments which can be a bit bland, such as the beans or rice. Otherwise, this is a Nederland treasure that you should detour down Ned. Ave. to check out sometime for some good Mexican food at a good price...look for the little white house! Live music too on some weekend nights is also a don't miss! read more

The best corn husk molina style BEEF tamales anywhere. The place has passed down through the generations of the Ramirez family and still remains in tact. Superb. The tacos are outstanding- truly. The beef is seasoned really well and marinated unlike any other I've ever had anywhere else. Remarkable flavor for tacos that has had me craving them since my last visit. The cheese enchiladas are surprisingly good - simple, minimal, classic...really some of the best around. The tamales are quite good. Many people rave about the fajitas and quesadillas, which I'm sure are great. I may never find out myself, though, because these other items are so good! My In-laws love this place and they choose it often because it's not as busy as a franchise. The business offers a nostalgic experience with local history and antiques as decor in an old house/building which was transformed into a restaurant. The staff is friendly and diligent about service. The food is fresh and tasty but I'm not impressed with the presentation. I don't like the prices at all. It's way too expensive. There are so many options but they are on the high end for enchiladas with rice and beans or other dishes. read more

I always come here when I crave for Mexican food. Atmosphere is like historic. Friendly staff and quick service. Great food and competitive prices. My favorite is the taco Rey burrito. I top mine with queso and jalapeño yum. Their quesadilla are also good and their nachos is a must!! I'm getting hungry just talking about it. We are moving to the area and decided to try our Taco Rey since it'll be so close to our new house. The food was really good and we will definitely go back! Only gave 4 stars instead of 5 because the waiter wasn't very attentive... he was okay but we had to ask for refills since he didn't get us any, ask for him to check on our queso (don't think he put it in), and then ask another waiter for a pen to sign the check... came to check on us once. Maybe just an off night and he was very friendly so I wasn't upset by the service but also was not overly impressed. We'll definitely be back! read more

I'm an admitted veteran of Taco Rey....first hitting the previous location when it still put out a daily lunchtime buffet. This is the true definition of "down home" Mexican cuisine....so it won't taste like the food at any chain you've been to. One of the most tempting dishes is one of the simplest...."Fideo"....the browned Mexican vermicelli that's a staple in Mexican homes, but nearly impossible to find in Mexican restaurants. Only Taco Rey has it as part of a combo sampler dinner - as well as the star of a dinner all its own. Also noteworthy--the queso sauces are real and melt in your mouth; the refried beans come out of a made from scratch pot you can see in the kitchen; the standard sauce that tops the enchiladas and burritos (which they call gravy!) is a sumptuous homemade chili and cheese topping; the salsa is perfect; and, unlike nearly all Mexican restaurant competitors - chain and private alike - Taco Rey goes easy on the salt because the food tastes spectacular without it. When I lived in the Golden Triangle full-time and worked as a local radio DJ, Taco Rey felt like my family kitchen away from home. My best friend and I couldn't get enough of the place, visiting several times per week. I remember Friday nights featuring live entertainment. The "new" location has an amazing atmosphere that could easily be the set of a movie. It's wonderful that the family continues to keep Taco Rey alive and flourishing---even though there are no longer any weekend hours. I've never had a bad meal here! read more

Service has gone downhill. Had to ask for refills, had to ask for chips, queso was forgotten about. Server did not write anything down yet kept forgetting everything about the order. If you can't remember orders, that's why you write it down. Fajita meat was served cold and on cold plate not on the standard fajita cast iron. Never got ticket even after trying to flag down server. Management response was only "I'm sorry and I hope you'll give us another chance." Restaurant was not remotely busy and our section only had three tables wi h people in it including us. read more

I have only ever been here twice before even though i have lived in the area my whole life. The food was pretty exceptional. I had the cheese enchiladas. The enchiladas themselves weren't incredibly different from any other Mexican restaurants in the area, but what set this place apart was the great service, atmosphere, and how quick our food was brought to the table. How does this place have 4.5 stars? I ate there today and was pretty disappointed. The chips came with 2 fried, sugar covered, pieces of tortilla on top, the 2 dessert like chips were actually pretty good, but they were on the chips and gave no warning. My friend dipped his into the salsa and took a big bite, that part was humorous. We ordered chili con queso, which was served somewhere in between room temperature and lukewarm. I had fajitas for my entree, the menu boasts that the fajitas come with, "A generous helping of meat". Dude, I got 2 strips of beef and 2 strips of chicken, on the smallest skillet I've ever seen in my life. I was so confused about my bell pepper. Everyone knows you slice bell peppers vertically, NOT horizontally. Why did my bell pepper slices look like onion rings??? AND to top that off I got the top slice. Have you ever had stuffed bell peppers? I was served what is basically the lid of a stuffed bell pepper. Seriously, that happened. I should have taken a picture. Also the onions and bell pepper slices were way too wide, about 3/4 of an inch wide. Such a bizarre meal. Oh yeah the flavor was bland and everything was cold in 2 minutes. I'd never go back and would never recommend this place to anyone I care about. Those dessert chips were probably the best part. I wonder if that was an accident.... read more

We have eaten here about twice a month for years. It's good decent food at very reasonable prices. The wait staff is decent and remember our drinks before we even take our seats. It's decor is strange but we like it. The food is remarkably the same every time. If you like it today, when you return in three months it will taste the same. It's not Casa Ole or Taco Bell.
