This place is located in a strip mall in Baileys Crossroads, very diverse area. Can see other businesses and people from all different backgrounds all around the area, so I knew this spot had a chance of being pretty good. Boy was I right. It's more of a carry out spot, not much seating, but luckily we snagged a spot. The place brands itself as a Hispanic/Asian fusion taco place, but I kept it simple and had an al pastor, asado, and chorizo taco. A big plus about this place was that the tortillas are made from scratch, and you can see the area where they make the food so it was pretty interesting watching the tortillas being made. The tacos were all good and flavorful. The chorizo was spicy and not too salty, which was a plus because chorizo can be salty. I must have come on an off day because what we ate was not even close to what this place is rated. The only thing good today was the service. That's it. We ordered 6 tacos to just "taste" to see if we should order more. As someone else mentioned before, the portions are really small. The tacos looked good when they came out, but none of the tacos tasted that great or were that memorable. The only decent taco was the galbi taco, everything else was bland or crazy dry. The chicken was like jerky and my wife couldn't finish it. All of the fresh sauces were CRAZY HOT! Just ignore the sauce signs and their heat ratings. They're all really hot. To me it looks like the owners had some early success and left this place on autopilot with no interest of keeping up standards. First and foremost keep in mind where this restaurant is located; had it been somewhere else I would have given it four stars. It's not the safest neighborhood and I probably wouldn't come back here at night (like we did today). The parking spaces are tight and tons of people don't understand the painted lines are where you put your car inside of -_- but I digress; the shop is a small hole in the wall type of eatery. There is about seven seats (bar style) right against where they make the food and the register is down on the left. No giant menu to choose from (another negative) but the employee did give us paper menus and later the laminated one as well. Decent prices and daily specials (probably makes this place very popular). I was super excited about the Korean fusion (I'm half Korean) and can't get enough Korean fusion food! The spicy pork was AHHHHMAZING (better than some spicy pork I've had at Korean places) and of course I had it mixed with the kimchi (is there any other way?) the bulgogi was entirely too sweet (still edible and the kimchi helped). My wife had the galbi and it was flavorful as well (just wish we had gotten the kimchi with that as well) she was not impressed with the chicken (it was bland and kinda dry). She liked the Mexican street corn and the sauces they provided. We ended up ordering our food to go and watched one of the employees hand press a ton of corn tortillas!! So you know it's super fresh ingredients and they cooked the meat for our order right there. I enjoyed that the employees went the extra step and put what was in each of the to go boxes and there was a nice presentation of a few cucumbers and the taco sauce. Each of the tacos came individually wrapped in foil (another bonus) so no spillage or overlap of flavors. While the food was tasty and flavorful we probably won't be back due to location and lack of more Korean fusion food options. read more

My husband and I returned at the request of the management, who was very proactive in contacting me and taking responsibility after the initial experience. Upon our return we tried the carnitas, al pastor, Bul-go-ki, Gal-bee (short rib), and spicy pork. Everything we tried was excellent and I especially enjoyed the grilled kimchi that came with the spicy pork and Bul-go-ki. I enjoyed all 4 of their hot sauces with the salsa chipotle and salsa roja being my favorite. I have to say I am happy we returned as Taco Ssam - their food is excellent, flavorful, and fresh. I absolutely love these tacos!! Dare I say the best tacos I've had in the D.C. area? They have some Korean-inspired tacos and some more traditional Mexican flavors, and the menu is divided up accordingly. I sampled both shrimp options-"spicy shrimp" which was almost like a sweet and sour sauce, and "grilled shrimp" which had delicious Mexican seasoning and was also a little spicy (a plus for me). My boyfriend sampled a couple of the Korean meat taco options, including bulgogi. We were both blown away by the flavors! The restaurant is very unassuming - it is tucked away in a strip mall off route 7, and just has counter seating inside. We were able to find a spot to sit, so we enjoyed or tacos delivered over the counter as they were made one at a time. They also offer take out which would be great for a bigger group or on a busier night. The atmosphere is very casual, clean and welcoming. Adovado: semi pulled beef or pork. Baked until fully softened with a hint of oregano flavor. Served with pico di Gallo, lime and a slice of radish and cucumber. The pork was flavorful, tender, and moist. The pico di Gallo so very fresh and delicious! It is like crack! The squeeze of the fresh lime wedge only adds to the flavor. I added a touch of the salsa roja. So very yummy! Gal-bee: boneless marinated short rib and BBQ. Delicious pieces of nicely barbecued, and well marinated short rib served with finely chopped cabbage, green onions, sprinkled lightly with sliced hot red peppers and a hoisin type sauce. Spicy pork: with grilled kim chi. Very spicy good! There is a variety of items on the menu from Mexican dishes of burritos, taquitos, fajitas, to Korean plates of gal-bee, ssam ramen, menudo soup, a variety of freshly made salsas and more! The place is a bit small (just a countertop area with a few chairs to sit) so I suggest just ordering take out if you can. They have daily specials and service is pretty fast. Taco Bland is a more accurate name for this restaurant. I was so hungry when I entered Taco Ssam that I set the bar very low for giving this food at least a 3 star review. I was expecting an infusion of asian and Mexican flavors when I ordered the steak fajitas with black beans, corn and white rice. My expectations were high when the chips and salsa turned out to be fresh and well seasoned but everything went downhill when my fajitas arrived. I had asked that my dish be prepared extra hot and spicy thinking that the meat would be prepared on the spot but I was given two large bottles of red and green sauce and told I had to add the spices myself using the two salsas. The steak quality was good but they added only a few strips of onion for flavor but I was under the impression that not even salt was used during preparation. The corn tortillas were raw and cracked and crumbled when I tried to fold them. The white rice was however freshly made and well cooked but it seemed to be all I could eat since the Black beans tasted like they were boiled in water with nothing else added. I tried to eat the corn on the cob and wondered what could they have done to this corn on cob to make it completely tasteless. Thoughts of engineered or cheap animal feed corn came to mind as I set it aside still hungry. I also wondered if the cook/ chef was out on this beautiful sunny Friday and the only available employee was assigned to cook using absolutely no spices. Did I give the impression that my health required strict hospital food? The waitresses speech was very unintelligible but she seemed so young and inexperienced so I left her a 20% tip anyway and I brought the leftovers to my husband who was able to eat it adding seasonings. The Bul-Gol-Ki taco was my favorite! It was so good, with the kimchi on top. I also ordered the chicken, and Carne Asada. About a 2-2.5: Taco Ssam is a small little taco/Korean fusion taco joint located inside the Culmore plaza off of Leesburg Pike. They have tacos, burritos, fajitas, quesadillas, taquitos, and chilaquiles as well. The hubs and I came here for an early dinner, and we ordered the following: a Bul-Go-Ki Taco (top sirloin marinated in soy sauce and sesame oil, topped with kimchi, onions, and cabbage - this was a confusing taco, as the bulgogi was super spicy and seemed have use the same sauce as the one used for the 'Spicy Pork'; it was super wet and caused the tortilla to become soggy); a Spicy Pork Taco (pork belly marinated in red pepper paste, topped with kimchi, onion, and cabbage - it had the same taste as the Bul-Go-Ki Taco, but a tad bit spicier; also, super wet); a Sweet & Spicy Shrimp Taco (covered in a sweet and spicy sauce, topped with lettuce and grilled onions; the sauce was more of a sweet chili sauce that was super overwhelming; it was also slightly watered down, which also caused the tortillas to be super drenched and the paper tray to have a layer of liquid); and, a Gal-Bee Plate (beef short ribs with a side of Mexican rice, grilled onions, Romaine lettuce leaves, and sliced cucumbers; this is more of a 'create-your-own-wrap' type of a deal, but we decided to just eat as-is; the galbi, while it had an okay flavor to them, were mostly cartilage and hardly any meat; I did liked the grilled onions; the Mexican rice did not complement the meats well at all, as it had no flavor and was dried out). I was excited that maybe I could go somewhere other than Taco Bamba for my taco fix. Taco Ssam is definitely paying homage to the famous Korean Tacos found in the West Coast. Did it deliver? I can't say it did. I had 2 Korean tacos (bulgogi and spicy pork) and 2 Mexican tacos (carne asada and al pastor). The Korean tacos were completely wet from kim chi juice and korean bbq grease. It seems they have not mastered how to really prepare their tacos. Now the Mexican tacos I did enjoy, even though the meat was a bit overcooked. The salsa verde definitely helped me scarf them down. The tacos were $3.50 each. It's safe to say they're probably making good business with the locals in that area, but as for a die-hard lover of tacos like me? I'll pass. read more

Wooooooowzers! This place is awesomesauce! Mr. and I decided to come by after a friend recommended Taco Ssam to us. I'm kind of a taco maniac and we usually search long and far for some of the best Mexican food around and low and behold Taco Ssam is no more than five minutes away. The food is seasoned very well and I found that I only needed the sauce as an option. The owner is a cool dude and gave us samples of crispy pork belly to try. It was delicious and I think I've found my local taco spot. I've checked off everything we've had on the menu and plan on having more. Sooo, if you're in the neighborhood or not, I highly recommend that you try this spot out. I'm pretty sure you'll see me and Mr. and trying out a new menu item. read more

Tried some regular Mexican and Korean fusion tacos. Lets just say stick to what they're known for, the Korean tacos! The Mexican style was bland and boring. My beef tongue taco was one of the worst I've had. It tasted like gamy boiled meat, had zero seasoning and plopped on a tortilla with nothing on it. Tamale had a good texture, but again lacked flavor. The sauces were also bland. The spicy pork taco was tasty, had nice bold flavors you'd expect, but it was a little on the greasy side. Being as the company is branded towards their Korean fair, I'm not surprised the Mexican part of their menu was a let down. They have taco Tues here that makes no sense. It says any 3 tacos with a fountain drink or bottle water for $10. The taco prices are $2.83-$3.07 each. They had good deals before the remodel. Now you're being manipulated to think you're getting a deal to help off set the cost of construction. The place is clean, portions weren't consistent, tortillas are made in house which is a plus in my book and staff was friendly. I probably wouldn't go back, but if I do, I'd stick to the Korean items. read more

I didn't get the offer for different salsas you can get with your order... I would definitely come back and give this place another try but with lower expectations. The wife & I came here rather spontaneously .... The tacos are 2.35X the cost of taco bell tacos -- and are like 5-10X as good. Worth it, even per dollar. Exotic tacos: I had beef tongue, beef cheek, and 2 Korean-fusion tacos that had kim chi. They give you a few cucumber and radish slices with their tacos -- let them bathe in the salsa, and they make a healthy after-taco snack. One that makes you feel like you didn't wastes the salsa run off, as well. Sop that good stuff up! They have like 6 salsas available. (but no extra meat, as one other review claimed -- maybe they changed that). Staff didn't seem very charismatic compared to all the other places I go, but they certainly weren't nasty or rude... Being transgender, one always has to wonder if cold treatment is because of me, or because of them. I've only experienced treatment this cold about once in a year, and it was with two different employees. But I'm not too worried about it. That's on them. Maybe they just were both in a bad mood that day. I'll still come back for more tacos at a later date regardless. read more
