Pretty impressed with this spot! We were skeptical after reading a recent bad review but were pleasantly surprised. Between my boyfriend and I, we ordered a few different tacos, the fiesta bowl and the elote. My boyfriend and I really enjoy Mexican food and these were probably the best tacos we've had here in northern Virginia. The Lengua taco needed a bit of salt but otherwise were full of flavor. Sauce bar was awesome! Contrary to the most recent review of all sauces being overwhelmingly hot, for someone who enjoys heat, they were BOMB. The green salsa verde was not too spicy at all. The minute you walk into this restaurant you immediately feel like you're enveloped in Mexican culture. From the colors, the music and the warm welcome you feel like you're about to get really good authentic food. My husband has been on a hunt to find pork tamales and we have been in Virginia for over 20 years and for the first time he found it. He gave them a 10 out of 10. I loved that they had Mexican and Korean fusion tacos. I loved my Kearny Asada tacos that I got but I also enjoyed the Korean rib tacos. This has become my favorite taco place over the years as you can see by the number of times I've been here :) It's always taco Tuesday here! It's authentic and unique at the same time as they have classics like carne asada and barbacoa but also have korean fusion tacos such as galbi and bulgogi. All are delicious. The staff members are nice and friendly. I'm glad they expanded to this larger location where there is actual seating and space to stand. The one thing I would improve is their salsas. Before they moved, when they first opened, the salsas were more flavorful. Now they taste a lot more watered down. I've had some delicious tacos in the area and was curious about Taco Ssam would measure up. We ultimately decided to check it out while driving through the Annandale area. This menu offers a Mexican-Korean fusion style with a wide variety of items including tacos, quesadillas, and ramen. We came here for tacos so we ordered a few different ones that had a good mix of flavors. We went with the lengua, chorizo, al pastor and Galbi. All the tacos were pretty averaged sized but less filled compared to some of the other places in the area. The corn tortillas don't seem to have been heated up or prepared in any type of way so it was a little dry. Nothing a lot of salsa couldn't fix. The lengua was by far the best tasting because the chorizo was a little salty and there wasn't much Galbi. The great thing about this place is the service is pretty fast and the happy hour is worth checking out. Probably not my first choice for tacos but not the worst option either. Dined in here on a whim. My friend and I were driving around looking for taco joints. This happened to be the day where DMV was hit by a huge storm that took out electricity all over Arlington. This place was one of the few places that had electricity and was still running. We stopped by and got some tacos. We sat in the booths and the spot was a little dirty. We still sat there because we were hangry. I ordered beef tacos and chorizo tacos. They also gave chips and salsa while we were waiting for food. The chips were super bland and I didn't quite enjoy the taste of the salsa. Once our meals arrived, I was surprised by how small it was. It was tiny! I squeezed lime all over my food and started eating the beef tacos. The beef was way too chewy and didn't have much flavor. The tortilla was also very dry. Same thing for the chorizo. Except these had a little more taste to them. By the end did my meal, I was not full. Also, this was the only restaurant where I didn't finish the chips they give us in the beginning. The carne asada meat was so flavorful and on point, i used minimum of toppings and sauce, It's definitely one of most delicious carne asada tacos I've ever tried. Al pastor was great also. This is a Korean fusion taqueria, i can tell their pork is marinated with the sweet korean BBQ sauce. It tasted just so right. And on the side, i can't go without ordering an elote loco. Came for some decent fusion and I'm coming away with mixed feelings. The place is, as others have noted, a mix of a bar/restaurant with the bar right as you enter (they appeared to be putting up soccer games for fans of that). Service was prompt and food came out relatively quick. This seems more like a takeout spot, but they gave chips and salsa for sitting down folk (which I was pleasantly surprised with, salsa has some nice heat to it). Got a kalbi, barbacoa, and pollo asado, and some of the grilled corn. Personally I really liked the seasoning of the kalbi. Pollo asado was alright, but a tad dry. Barbacoa was juicy but rather bland. The ample amounts of salsa definitely helped out, but it was something of a shortcoming. The corn was %!@#ing fantastic though. Ordered the cheese quesadilla and paid extra for chicken and there was not one shred of chicken in it. The beef sopas were better but nothing special. I chose this restaurant on a whim when meeting friends who were in town, as it was kind of the halfway mark for us and wasn't too expensive. They needed someplace that would be kid friendly and good for larger groups, as they had three adults and four children in tow. When I arrived, they were quick to push three tables together for us and when my friends arrived, they had waters out to us quickly. It seemed like it was a counter service type restaurant, but they offered us full service. Their menu has a lot of great options and is well priced, but it isn't burgeoning. I ordered: Al pastor taco Bul-Go-Ki taco Al pastor is one of my absolute favorite tacos of all time, and while theirs is good, it isn't great. The meat itself was flavorful but lacked major spice, and they topped it with so much pico de gallo that it was overwhelmed. The Bul-Go-Ki was delicious! I love fusion, and honestly Korean and Mexican lend themselves to it really easily. The flavors were super on point, with good textural differences. Went to this place because it had a really great review. When I walked in it's a small place with a fairly decent size bar with televisions and they were showing soccer (SCORE)! This was our first time there and it was a party of three of us, but we both liked Asian food and Mexican food, so this was a really good fusion place to try. My friend got the Fiesta Bowl which put Chipotle to complete shame. Her husband got various tacos with a side of rice and beans and they brought out different sauces for us to try, all varying in heat. I got three different tacos (barbacoa, spicy shrimp and cod) and a side of Mexican street corn. Amazing! All of the food was completely flavored and seasoned perfectly. This place specializes in tacos, and you can get Korean tacos in 4 flavors: bulgogi, galbee, pork belly, and spicy pork). You can also get traditional Mexican tacos with variations of chicken, pork, beef, etc. They also have burritos, quesadillas, menudo soup, tortas, and other Korean dishes like Bimimbap, or a Ssam Box which has Korean meat, beans, and tortillas so you can make your own Korean tacos. You can eat here for about $10 per person, as most of the tacos are around $3, and the plates of food or other things are just about $10. You can also go for lunch specials from Monday to Friday, where they have something different every day (it's almost the same price as the ala carte menu, only you get a free drink) Both my husband and I agreed that the best tacos here were the Korean ones, and not necessarily the Mexican ones (I had the grilled chicken, he had the Al Pastor). Both of us got the Bulgogi taco, which was our favorite. It was spicy, with the gochugang and kimchi mixed in, and the meat was flavorful and delicious. I would absolutely get this again. The chicken taco that I got was just okay - I've had much better and prefer the chicken tacos at Taco Bamba. The chicken wasn't that flavorful to me, and while it was a generous amount, I found it a bit bland and boring. There wasn't much variety in the sense that it was usually the same items rotating but, it was always delicious and such a great value not to mention we always got free chips and salsa. This place came highly recommended to me by my cousin who ironically served it at her baby shower. It was only recently that I found out the name for it! I got to create my own tacos without any judgement (I add a little bit of meat and then load up my tacos with a lot of queso fresco, cilantro, and salsas). She got the Gal-Bee and Bul-go-ki tacos while I got the Bul-go-ki and Fried cod fish tacos. Standing by the counter, you could see the kitchen. Watching the staff make the tortillas from scratch and cooking up the food that we just ordered was mesmerizing. While we waited for our food, we loaded up our tray with condiments to eat with our tacos, aka their 3-4 varieties of salsas. The avocado verde salsa was my go to sauce to eat with my tacos. The salsa gave my tacos that extra boost of flavor and creaminess. My bestie loved her tacos so much, she keeps saying we need to go back! There are a few seats at a counter, but it is best if you can carry out and take food home or back to work. I keep trying but I think I am going to stop. The tortillas were plastic like but the al pastor was good and not too greasy. I don't like that dried cheese and they put in the sour cream for a quesadilla. They also put lettuce inside of the quesadilla - who wants hot wilted lettuce? Yuck. We were out running errands nearby and needed some fuel to keep going. I looked on yelp and saw Taco Ssam and a few other spots nearby. Taco Ssam looked promising so we scurried over and hoped the small space we saw in the pics wouldn't be too crowded for us on a Sunday at 3:30. We got there and just as the pics show, there is not much spacing but just enough to grab a seat and eat your food with a friend or two. The seats at the bar were mostly full but right after we ordered two seats opened up! We ordered two spicy pork tacos, a pork belly taco, a gal bee taco, an al pastor taco, and chorizo. It did take a while for the food to come out and since we can watch the kitchen from the seating, we figured it might be because they were having some trouble coordinating that day. (Not sure if its always like this). When we got our food we realized that the took the order wrong and we got three spicy pork tacos instead of a pork belly. I'm pregnant and was hungry when we ordered so I thought the world was ending in my head - I realize that is a minor mistake so we literally just ordered another taco instead of asking them to switch out a taco. When we got our tacos, I forgot all about the time we waited. They were pretty tasty - the al pastor taco was pretty good and had pieces of pineapple in the taco itself, the chorizo wasn't too greasy and was full of flavor, and the pork belly was exactly what I was craving. Come for the handmade tortillas and stay for the salsa sauces. I came with a friend for a snack and we both ordered the daily special, Fiesta Bowl along with a Bulgoki taco. I have gone to Takorean and other Korean/Mexican fusion places and I would say that the sauces stand out for me. The owner I presumed gave us some Salsa Habanero to try; it was very hot as expected! I personally like the Salsa Verde with the spicy jalapeño sauce and tried the Salsa Rojo/Chipotle as well. For $6.25, the Fiesta Bowl as a daily special was a great deal; carne asada marinade had a better taste than other fusion places. Although I was not impressed with the Bulgoki taco with grilled kimchi. Others fusion places that I have tried had better gochujang and kimchi; nothing compared to Korean restaurants or homemade kimchi. As a fast casual restaurant I would definitely recommend coming back; although not worth driving specifically to go here as the DMV has so many other food options nearby. I ordered takeout from here a few days ago. They gave a lot of salsas, which was good, and the tacos all tasted different from each other. I particularly liked the chorizo and spicy pork tacos. The pollo guisado taco could have used a little more flavor in my opinion, and I would have liked if there was more spice on the elote. I opted for the bulogogi taco and short rib taco both from the fusion section of the menu. I really enjoyed both. The bulgogi had a spicey aoli and the meat wasn't super fatty but still flavorful. Don't plan on coming with a group of friends- they only have 7 bar stools at a counter and no other seating, but this would be an excellent place to grab a quick meal by yourself or with one friend. Would also be great for takeout! They have daily specials and I came on a Monday for their Ssam box special. It is usually around $11 but is just $8 on Mondays- excellent value. There are lots of proteins you can pick from, and some like kalbi for an upcharge, but I just went with the bulgogi. It was flavored very well and was a generous portion. It all comes in a to go lunch bento box, with rice, veggies, avocado, and corn on the cob. You also have your choice between black beans, pinto beans, and grilled veggies. Get the veggies- it's good stuff- red and green peppers, squash, and green beans. The meal also comes with 4 homemade tortillas- we were watching them make them- so you can make your own tacos! Found this place today when browsing Yelp for local spots and I'm so glad I did. This place is a hidden gem, probably because the shopping center has no major stores so it goes ignored but I urge everyone to go in. I ordered a spicy pork taco and a bulgogi fiesta bowl, both with kimchi mixed in. Both were equally delicious. They also gave me a cup of each of their sauces and sour cream. The red one was my favorite. And using them all together added the perfect level of spice and coolness to my meal. I'll definitely be returning with friends to try their other offerings and to put others on. Why not five stars? Because there's no where to dine in. Yes, there are bar stools but the table space is so small that I don't think people would feel all that comfortable eating on them. Not to mention they're right by the register so you'll have other patrons ordering in your ear while you done. They should look into finding a larger location to incorporate some tables.
