Came for taco Tuesday and my experience was not that great. My order was wrong and the cashier was not that easy going when I tried explaining that I was missing my adobada taco. I realize tortilla are hand-made which is actually a good thing but half of my tortilla looked either bit or ripped. Per my pic it looked like I got half of a taco and ALL my tacos looked like that. Got the Cali Surf & Turf. This is the first California Burrito that I tasted that doesn't really have pico or sour cream, instead they use some kind of chipotle sauce and melted cheese. Coming here is like playing scratcher lotto cards, sometimes you get that gas packed up to the brim like an amazon sprinter van. But sometimes you get a string bean skinny burrito like they think im on a diet. Ima keep it real with you, id rather give this place 3 stars but ima give it four because its the only good place to get a burrito on campus. I ordered a breakfast burrito with sausage... I don't even know what meat came in my burrito. There was also an ocean of cheese on one side, and an underwhelming amount of egg. Very quick and decent Mexican food. For an on-campus food, it's very money friendly especially on Tuesday and you like tacos. I really recommend chicken and steak tacos. Came here for $2 Taco Tuesday and was a bit disappointed considering the long line and wait. The tacos for the $2 deal are limited to carne asada, pollo asado, al pastor, and veggie avocado. All are served on handmade tortillas. I got all except the pollo asado. The carne asada was delicious, but it's hard not to mess that up. The al pastor was very dry and too salty. It was a shame because I was looking forward to this one most. The veggie avocado was decent, but the pico-to-other-ingredients ratio was way off. The good thing was I took half off and put it on top of the al pastor taco to help with the dryness. I also ordered the horchata, which was pretty watered down, even without ice. This is my number 1 go-to place to get food every Tuesday in UCSD (selected tacos are $2.50 each during Taco Tuesdays)! I always get their al pastor tacos and add their spicy salsa and lime. They give you plenty of meat and toppings which makes every bite as good as the first one! Staff are friendly and the place is great to hangout with friends. Place was the General Store in the old days. After that there was a Cafe. Now it's a huge taco shop with lots of outdoor seating. I visited on taco Tuesday when the tacos are $2. Watch it as I knew something was wrong when I was billed over $20. I have decent math skills and knew I didn't order 10 tacos. Carne asada taco came with a thick corn tortilla. It was kinda fluffy and had a mild corn flavor. I like the flavor a bit more than Rubio's but there are places in town with better tortillas. Beef was tender and had very good flavor. This was the best taco of the 3. Carnitas taco. Flavor was a bit like the adobada taco only less spicy. Adobada taco had a bit of a spicy kick. Pork was very good quality. I didn't like the flavor. Eating the adobada tacos at Tacos Y Gordo has ruined me. Beef rolled taco didn't have a really good beef to tortilla ratio. Taco was more soft than crunchy. Beef needed more seasoning. I ordered it plain but it came covered in cheese. I visited again to try the fried tacos. Once more they messed up my order. I asked for plain tacos and was given tacos with lettuce and cheese. I did my best to remove all the cheese but failed as there was a lingering cheese flavor. :-( Fried beef taco had a crunchy shell and nice beefy flavor. This taco was hard to eat though as the beef did not want to be chewed apart. Fried chicken taco had a crunchy shell and had a good chicken flavor as it was nicely marinated. I might visit again for taco Tuesday but I'm definitely checking my receipt and my order before leaving the counter. read more

My first impression of the place is the cashier isn't friendly. Maybe they were having a bad day and I hope it got better. The taco I ate was a C at best. The portions for the price doesn't match. I feel like I was given pinch portions rather than a servings. The carne asada was dry and not flavored with spices apart from pepper. The tortilla was hand made and the red salsa were good. My husband ordered online on 12/19 but the store was closed (which he didn't know) and still charged his credit card. No email provided to communicate. The phone number isn't working either. Definitely one of the better places to eat on campus. If I'm ever too lazy to bring my own food, this is the only place I'm willing to spend my own money at. I ordered the Potato Rolled Tacos. They're essentially mashed potatoes put in a tortilla and fried. It's topped with lettuce, salsa, and cheese so it's not too bland. They give you 5 of them which ends up for a decently priced but filling meal. The tacos here are actually tiny so be aware if you're ordering them! I'd recommend at least getting 3 if you want to be full. Definitely go on their taco Tuesday's because if not, the size of the tacos for the price is not really worth it. I would give this place a 3.5/5 if I could but I rounded it down because the wait time is SO LONG. I understand that they just opened so they might be getting used to the swing of things but waiting 40 minutes for my tacos seemed ridiculous. A few of my colleagues and I decided to grab lunch here after our meeting in Mandeville. Since this is located in Student Center B, it's more convenient if you are over in Muir or Revelle. They have a lot of options on the menu, but I opted for the al pastor fries and an horchata. I was underwhelmed by the fries. They were a bit underdone. Also, the al pastor wasn't the kind that I like. This was bright orange (when the good stuff is more pink). The guac, sour cream, and cotija were great toppings though. It comes with cheese, as well. Overall, this place is fine (especially for on campus), but I wouldn't go out of my way to recommend it to anyone. read more

Unless you're a Rubio's fan, Taco Villa is the best Mexican food you can get on UCSD campus. I've gone there multiple times over the past few years, and every time my craving for Mexican food was pleasantly fulfilled. I've only tried their carne asada fries and California burritos, and I think their food is pretty good. It may underwhelm you if you're accustomed to SoCal Mexican food, and I thought the fries especially were pretty average. The 3 star rating is mainly a reflection on judging their food objectively. Like I mentioned though, their food more than got the job done when I was craving Mexican food and was unable to get off campus. The fact that this place is conveniently on campus, en route to a fair amount of classes, and has a fair amount of indoor and outdoor seating makes Taco Villa a great option to swing by after a long day of class to get your fix of fair-priced Mexican food. If I could, I would bump the rating to a 3.5 given the positive memories I've had eating their food with my friends after long grind days. I would recommend all UCSD students to at least give this place a try! *Bonus Fact* : As far as I'm aware, this is the only place where you can get a churro on campus :) read more

It's ok. I've had a few bites of my boyfriend's chili Verde burrito and it was yum!! Like, I wanted to finish his lunch up that time. But somehow, this time around, we weren't too impressed. We both got chili Verde. The burrito was a little chewy and the pork, beans, rice weren't as smashing as I remember. The salsas they have there are fantastic so I ended pouring both onto each bite, which made the burrito more palatable. The onions are great too! I could eat those all day long. I love burritos and tacos and when I noticed that this shop has finally opened on campus, I decided to wait for awhile until they got everything in order. You have to make sure you go during off time because if you don't, you'll be waiting in line for some decent food. Don't get me wrong, it's better than some places on campus but it's not really worth the wait. I went around 830am on a Wednesday and there weren't many students around. The menu is on the tv screen or next to the register. The man who was at the register was very friendly to a few patrons but not so friendly to the majority of us. Anyhow, I decided to ignore it and I ordered my breakfast burrito. I decided to get the triton breakfast burrito. It had bacon, hashbrown, sausage, egg, and beans and I think a couple more ingredients but I forget. I opted to not get it with beans. The final cost for it was $7.33. When I got it, I was disappointed in the size. I guess I should have left the beans in there. In any case, I got one each of their salsa - red, green and chunk aka pico de gallo, though I'm not too sure, really. Anyhow, it was a decent burrito. I wasn't blown away by it. It was pricey for what it is. It was good but I didn't have that butterfly in the stomach feeling or love at first sight. Haha. I guess I'll give it another try in the future. But not anytime soon.
