Chips & Queso Chips and Guac

Before I left the DMV area, I spotted a sign that a new restaurant was coming to my favorite shopping center, Barcroft Plaza (it holds my gym, my bank, my dry cleaner, etc.). I activated full stalker mode--I did drivebys and peeked in the windows. Most of my trips back to the DMV were either quick or so jampacked that I haven't had a chance to return to Barcroft Plaza. The halal and organic menu features chimichangas, tacos, burritos, bowls, and salads. You can choose from meat, shrimp, or grilled veggies. First, I grabbed chips, guacamole, and queso (yes, two dipping sauces--we listen, and we don't judge). Both were good, but I enjoyed the queso more, and it was even better as leftovers the next day. One of the things that I must try at a Mexican restaurant is birria, which I read was only available on Tuesdays and Sundays (I learned later that this is true for all locations except Barcroft). Babe, the birria was so tender and made with their handmade corn tortillas. The melty cheese tacos and the unami consommé have my stamp of approval. Per my nutritionist's instructions, I grabbed veggie tacos for a more balanced meal.

My brother and I were in the area and made a visit. This place is in a strip mall with other businesses such as Spice Circle, MQR Cafe and across from Chay Restaurant. As you walked in, the restaurant is clean, cozy and colorful. You make your order at the counter and they will bring it out to you. All the items on the overhead menu are simple to navigate but there's no combo meals. But if you order 2 or 3 tacos, you can order with a variety of proteins separately and not just one protein in all. If you order any sides, it is separate pricing from the entree. My brother ordered 2 birria tacos, 1 carnita taco and 1 beef taco. I ordered 1 chicken taco, 1 beef taco and 1 fried chimichanga, We both order tres leches for dessert. The birria tacos were too salty and the consommé was a little watery. It was okay. The highlight of our trip were their tacos. The filling was generous portion with protein, pico de gallo, cilantro, red cabbage and very delicious. You won't be disappointed. They have three sauce bottles: green, red and yellow. They all are flavorful and each delivers the enhancement for your palate. When the fried chimichanga arrive to the table, I was surprised of how each item presented on the plate was beautifully displayed. It look almost gourmet. Everything on that plate was on point. We were both looking forward to their tres leche. It was tasty, the cake was a little dense and there wasn't much sauce. The cashier and food runner were friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. I would make another visit to try other items on their menu.

I really enjoyed their fish taco and appreciated that it came with guacamole. That was a nice touch. These feel more like Americanized tacos, so don't come here expecting anything super authentic. Aside from the fish and guac, everything else (carne asada & barbacoa) was just okay. This spot is more of a "I'm hungry and need something quick" place rather than somewhere I'd go out of my way for. I don't see myself coming back, especially when one taco is around $5-6. In my opinion, there are better options nearby

Update 1 Feb 25: The food is still awesome! Ordered street tacos, chips, a burrito and a quesadilla to share with my husband last night as a to-go order. Hit the spot. Thanks!

This is more of a 3.5 leaning than a solid 3 rating. I was excited to try out this place and Google reviews were very high. Reviews rated this place as authentic Mexican food. While I would not rate this as authentic, it is an average taco place. When I went, I wanted the birria tacos. I read that they're only available on Sundays and Tuesdays. I went close to 12pm which was their opening time, and they said they were still making the birria and it'd take two hours. While I appreciated that their birria are made fresh, it would be good to know this in advance. The restaurant was super clean, bright, and colorful. The staff were friendly. I ordered the steak, barbacoa, and bbq brisket. My fav was the barbacoa by far, followed by the brisket (although they're a little heavy on the bbq sauce), then the steak. The portions are a little bigger than your standard street tacos and they def fill it with toppings! I'd come back to try their burritos or chimichangas, but I'll be looking elsewhere for the tacos.

Salsa, queso and guac, oh my.

Picked up from here and brought it home (a short drive away) for dinner. The dining room is small but clean, with a counter at the back. It was quiet when I went, so I was attended to promptly. When I arrived home, all of the items we ordered were in the bag, with the only issue being that the jus for the birria tacos was on its side and leaking all over the rest of the food. Luckily, the lack of care in packing ruined only tortilla chips and was not an indicator of the quality. The birria tacos were very good, so much better than other nearby taco places I won't name. The quesadillas were big and gooey and good. My wife said the burrito bowl with shrimp was good and the shrimp were a good representation. All the different things you can dip chips into were good too. We will be happily returning to pick up food here in the future, but making sure the bags are packed better.

Shrimp Quesadilla with sour cream, note the half filled cup of watery sour cream.

Finally tried this place as I am always looking for a good place with yummy tacos, burritos, and quesadillas. We ordered the quesadilla with shrimp and side of quac, salsa, and chips. The good: the quesadillas had a ton of cheese. The salsa was fresh and not spicy. The bad: the cheese used on the quesadillas has very little flavor. They could do a cheese mix or add some herbs to it for improvement. Very few shrimp on the quesadillas, even though they cost $2 extra. The sour cream that comes with the quesadillas was loose, to the point of almost being watery. The tiny cup holding the sour cream was only half filled. First time I have ever had salty sour cream. The guac had too much fillers added and was heavy on the lime. Probably won't be back.

The Caliburrito and chimichanga are pretty good. Must try. Portion size is great too. A place yet to be properly discovered.

We have gone twice now. The tacos, quesadillas and bowl are all great. My preference for protein is steak and it has been delicious.

Another food runner immediately brought us water and chips and salsa. The salsa tasted a little bland and felt like it was missing some salt or some other seasoning/ingredient. We ordered another round but it was about the same. The chips were great. The seafood enchiladas I ordered were flavorful and there was a great spread of guacamole, sour cream, beans and rice. The plates were served hot and the kitchen had the good come out quite quickly which was appreciated. We'll be back!
