3.5 stars.. but this truck has high enough ratings. I love the ladies that work here and the SALSAs! I'm tempted to give an extra star for the salsas! Especially the light green avocado cucumber one. They have lettuce and pico de gallo out too so I can really load up my tacos. I love the value and that they are open late. I love that they have veggies tacos, without loads of the pico de gallo and avo salsa they really are nothing special though. I think the ratings are so high because this is one of the best options in LA.m especially for a late night snack, but everyone knows all the good Mexican is down in SD! read more

My friends used to go every other Monday night after the comedy show at UCB, a tradition I was adopted into. This taco truck is so delicious. Real Mexican tacos and burritos and quesadillas. The ladies that run it are on top of their business. Like, they know what's up. The horchata is delicious and the small selection of toppings rocks. I do a thing where I take all three salsas and pico and cilantro and onions and mix it in a bag all together then dump that on whatever I'm eating bc I like to live on the edge and also it's friggin spicy and delicious as heck. I like that vibes around it too. People like to hang out and eat on the trunk of their cars or by the small little table things they have. No specific date listed for return. I was worried because I've come here three times in the past few weeks around 8:30 and they were nowhere. Good to know that it's just truck problems, hopefully they'll be back out soon. ** Also, to update my initial review- in June 2014 Taco Zone catered my wedding at Grace E. Simons Lodge in Elysian Park. They brought the truck and everything! They set up the truck in the little cul-de-sac in front of the venue. My fiance and I inquired with them about 6 months in advance and it was very easy to set up with the daughter. We paid for 2 hours for 100 guests. It was all you can eat from their entire menu (included tacos, mulitas, burritos, quesadillas and their delicious salsa bar. FYI horchata cost extra). I've been here a good couple of times, although I have to admit, I wouldn't have, had it not been for an Echo Park native and fellow hippo hunter. Taco Zone is conveniently located (parking is never a problem) at the Vons (1342 N Alvarado St) in Echo Park. If you are wrapping up a night of drinking, partying, thuggery, hippo hunting, dancing, shuffling or any sort of combination of those, Taco Zone will satisfy you in ways you could never imagine. "Ways you could never imagine?" Well for me, a budding taco enthusiast that meants trying mulitas for the first time. A mulita? It's like a sandwhiched tortilla taco. My words do it very little justice and before I could take a picture, I had inhaled it. Try it, if you haven't, and try it here. Taco Zone has a huge variety of meats, from buche, to pastor and even suadero. I love the pastor, I love the carne asada, and actually I have never had a dry, tasteless piece of meat like you often find at many taco trucks. Taco Zone always leaves me happy and is usually the last thing that goes down the pipes after a night out in Los Angeles. I have no criticisms for this piece of taco truck paradise. We came here during our Taco Truck Tour 2009. I immediately liked the name, the fact that there was a parking lot to park in, and the little old lady selling pan dulce next to the truck. So we made it a stop on our tour. I have to give this taco truck props for the salsa bar. I like trucks that let you dress the tacos yourselves, and this one offered it all. The avocado salsa was the best! As for the tacos, I didn't like the way the meat was shredded so finely, removing any texture it could have had, and it didn't have as much flavor as the other trucks I've been to. That's why I was glad to have the salsa bar. The horchata wasn't very impressive, either. The line is always about 10-20 deep but moves quickly. I should also point out that we hadn't been drinking, unlike some other taco truck reviewers. One of the best spots to go after youve hit the bars and need a little something to soak up the booze is Taco Zone. and believe me, it's a zone you want to be in! I usually get the carne asada tacos, which I would say more closely resemble corned beef hash sans the potatoes, but it is super good. Plus they dont pile on the onions and cilantro, thats for you to do! They are parked on the side of the street right next to a big parking lot, so no searching for parking required. Next time youre in Echo Park plan on making a stop by and grab a taco or two! Update: After my initial review I have been back and refined my experiences there, bringing my review from four stars down to three. The carne asada is in no way carne asada. It is dry and really salty, and you will get heart burn from this, so make sure to keep some tums by your bed side. This place is more of a convenience factor kind of a joint since its in close proximity to a number of bars. I would really like taco trucks to step it up. It seems like most other food trucks these days are serving gourmet foods, some of which even offer competitive prices. The address on Yelp didn't take us exactly to the truck, so my husband and I wandered a little bit to find the truck. It's located at the same parking lot as Vons! So funny because we had just shopped at Vons and were driving around to look for this truck, but it was right next to us all along! The tacos were super delicious and cheap, the perfect late night meal. You always gotta eat something unhealthy for your late night meals!! I tried the carne, asada, and pollo. It usually never is, but at this truck the pollo was my favorite! The pollo was super flavorful. Generosity. It's interesting the effect our actions are able to have on reality. What experiencing an act of kindness at the right moment during a low time can do for a person. How much being treated like a person can do for a person especially when that person feels so far entirely from being able to see a person in themselves. Invisible is what it's like yet detested. It's nothing new, it can be seen everywhere, all over. Alvarado street in Los Angeles is in no kind of way an anomaly of any sort. Poverty exists everywhere but parking lot of the Vons on Alvarado and Montana was where on most nights Id park mine. what I found to be different there though was a rather popular food truck. sleepless nights in LA I would sit and watch as lines formed groups of customers came and went. Streams of people seeking what it was that flew onto and off of the grills in there before out of the window of that truck seasoned greasy smoky cheesey flavorful meats commonly though not restricted to on a tortilla carne pollo El pastor or veggie plates platters combo meals a variety of some of the best truck food makes sure nightly that customers were served. It wasn't the scent though nor the spectacle of the lines or the convenience of location that first got me to try what this truck was serving. As I said earlier corner of Montana and Alvarado Vons parking lot was where I parked it, my poverty that is. Homeless and most nights spent watching the lines I remember one night in particular when the cashier end of the night approached me with a carne asada cheese quesadilla plate with all the fixings on it and told me it was someone's order who didn't show up and they didn't want to waste it. I felt reddiculously lucky. I couldn't believe someone would just pay for their order then bail like that. Super lucky especially since not only did they bail of the plate but a couple unopened cans of coke as well. Arguably one of my luckiest nights.... Generosity though...that cashier who saw me an my wife some of those nights in an act of generosity came and offered us dinner which was greatly appreciated since I couldn't afford really anything at that moment. The best mulitas in LA! The tortillas are cooked to perfection, slightly crispy on the outside, leaving the cheese wonderfully melted in the inside. I highly recommend the suadero. The meat tastes marinated as it is sizzling with flavor. They don't skimp either as the portions are as generous as the smiles on the staff. Lovely people behind the glass. The veggie options don't disappoint either. The salsa bar is incredible and always well stocked with fresh pico, onions, and a variety of salsas. Park at Vons. Street parking is very tough in the area. They start setting up around 8 and you should be able to order by 815ish. They have salsas and other stuff you can put into tacos by outside table. Pickled onion is delicious and their salsa verde is great. Tortillas are solid. Their al pastor, carne asada, chicken are cooked real well. I was surprised by the chicken. Super juicy and flavorful. Their burritos are solid, tacos are definitely better. Good taco truck! I came here with a friend after working out one night because I was really craving some tacos. He said this was his favorite taco truck, so I decided to trust him... and turns out... he was not far off! I'm a fan of lengua, which this place doesn't have, though :( But the rest of the tacos were really good. I couldn't really tell the difference between all the meats, though. They were just all tasty. Especially with all the homemade salsas they had ready to go on the side of the truck. Overall, this place is worth a lookout if you're in the mood for some taco time. Once again Yelp comes through on my search for tacos in LA. Located in the Echo Park neighborhood just a few blocks off of Sunset BLVD you will find Taco Zone. I'd say this is in my top 3 taco trucks of all time, almost coming in 1st place, a strong 2nd place for sure. Come and park in the Vons parking lot, order anything because it's all fantastic. I usually get 2 carne asada burritos(I tend to get the munchies late night) they are decently sized and stuffed with great ingredients. I heard standing in line ... there's no such thing as bad head, just not so great head. I didn't even get the full experience. I just had a small taste of it. Well ... just to make things clear, I'm talking about cabeza and lengua tacos. Don't worry they have all your other favorites too. Carne asada, al pastor, pollo and tripas. They even had something I've never tried before, suadero. Yeah they also have burritos, quesadillas and a mini-salsa bar too. Next time I'm in the area again ... Post Hollywood Outdoor Cinema debauchery (ok not really but yeah), by the time Laura, Melissa and I got back to the car to drop off our stuff, we decided to just bounce and get something to eat. We tried pupusas, but the one pupuseria we saw was closed, so we decided on tacos. This was the closest one both Laura and I knew. It's a taco truck. Nothing really changed. The usual offerings with the self serve salsa bar. I still don't like that you order and get your food from the same window, having to worm by people. Whatev.... With my relatively recent discovery of the goodness that is a tripa taco, I got one of those, 1 cabeza, and 1 carnitas. The carnitas was the same as last time. Browned and kind of crispy. But I don't prefer one way over the other, because hey, it's a pork product and I'll eat anything that came off of a pig. Well, except for its entrails.... *GAG* The cabeza was alright, but I like it at ETM better. The tripa was pretty good and similar to Pelon Taco Stand. I HAVE DIED AND GONE TO LENGUA HEAVEN. Seriously, I may not ever be able to eat another lengua taco (unless it's from Taco Zone) and be satisfied...Talk about some good tongue, the meat is ridiculously tender. And for $1.25 a taco? I could live off of their lengua tacos alone. I also tried a suadero taco, an al pastor taco, and a carne asada burrito. The suadero was flavorful but reeeaaallly dry. The pastor taco and asada burrito were DDDDD-licious though. I even forgot to ask for my burrito with no rice, but I didn't regret it. They didn't use a ton of it, and what was in there tasted lightly seasoned and was a finer, lighter rice that was super yummy. I mostly used the orangish red colored sauce, which was spicy enough and tasty, but I put the green avocado based sauce on my burrito and that was good as well. So due to William S's kindness, I was served up one muy caliente asada taco, topped with all the goods and some "is it hot in here or are my gums just melting off" salsa roja. Deeelicioso! I'd rather the cow have a big ass than me. Taco Zone serves up all of the above and the usual goodies like carne asada & chicken in taco, burrito, torta, quesadilla or plate form. There are even veggie options for those who aren't fans of cow and chicken bits. They have all the fixins you need to do your beef right. I had two tacos for $2.50. TWO-FITTY! Taco zone knows what's up! We're in a recession - make my food good and make it cheap, fast and with a smile. I got all of that at TZ. You can feel cool chillin' with your cow butt in hipsterific Echo Park, preening outside the Vons parking lot. They're open late, so you can stumble out of the bar at closing time and satisfy your late night cravings. As a bonus - it's not smelly. My friend Jen blogs, and one day, she posted a video of a group of friends enjoying food at Taco Zone Truck. Needless to say, on my next visit to LA, I HAD to try it! We parked in the Vons lot next to the truck and stood in line. I ordered a suadero burrito because suadero was the recommended meat. The burrito was good, a little on the dry side, so make sure to grab salsa or pico de gallo before heading back to the car. The quesadillas that others ordered looked REALLY good. More like 3.5 stars, but I have yet to try the other meats - cabeza included. This taco truck is run by some very smart ladies. They park right next to Vons, so all taco truck goers have a space to park their own cars. The truck opens up at 7pm, which is perfect because that's when the "No Parking" zone ends. After the CD Swap event, the gang decided to rendezvous here...however, due to a wrong turn in the directions, I ended up showing up 30 minutes later. So after driving around West Hollywood/Hollywood/Silverlake/Echo Park and perhaps a few other cities along the way in the wee hours of the morning, the million dollar question is: Was the food worth it??? Well, my friends, the answer to that question is YES. Despite the fact I was really craving Kogi (don't hate) I was told that these were some seriously awesome tacos....so what did I order? A burrito. I know, go figure. For $4.50, I got a pollo (that's chicken for you gringos) burrito, "with everything" (rice, beans, salsa). There's a makeshift salsa bar outside of the truck with various spicy condiments for your savory pleasure. I wolfed that burrito down in approximately 3 minutes...I guess I didn't realize how hungry I was....or how delicious it was. The pinto beans, rice, and chicken were all magnificently melded together with the spiciness of the homemade salsa, which had quite a kick to it. Mmmm mmmm gooood. I wish I had sprung for the horchata though, I needed something to cool my mouth down from the extra salsa I poured on. I have to say, I'm not a fan of late night eating, but that burrito wasn't greasy or heavy like what you would expect someone to eat after a night of drinking and dancing. Yeah, Taco Salsa is kind of a gringo-ey name (and they even have a meal called the Super Gringa - I didn't order it) but you know what? Their salsas are outstanding for a taco truck and I understand why they'd want to call attention to them. I tried the two green ones atop my cabeza and carnitas tacos: both excellent and wildly different. The he darker, waterier tomatillo was deceptively spicy and heavily seeded, and filtered down through every pore of my carnitas, while the creamier cilantro-based sauce sat atop my cabeza like tzatziki. Admittedly I cheated by secretively adding some papalo leaves from the market down the street to my tacos, but if I hadn't done that, it still would have been great. The carnitas are a little salty, but very tender, and the cabeza's extremely soft and mild. Same prices as Tacos Arizas down the street and around the corner. I'm not sure why that place gets all the love and this one sits here with a lone two-star review! If I had to choose one, I'd probably prefer Taco Salsa because of its salsas and fresher tortillas (but oh, how I'd miss Arizas' lengua). read more

I'm trying so hard to disregard the fact that this truck is apparently known for "vegetarian tacos" like what the heck is a vegetarian taco? Smh. ANYWAY, the place is solid. Meat quality is good, topping choices are good, tortillas are as to be expected, and I love that they offer mullitas. Like most taco trucks there really arent any seating options other than the curb but it doesn't seem like Vons is really strict with their parking so you can always eat in or on your car. My one peet peeve with Taco Zone (other than the obnoxious hipsters and their complicated orders) is that you order your food and receive it through the same window. Ah, the little taco truck that could. Taco Zone is my latest obsession and come 8 p.m. -- when the camper o' goodness rolls up outside of the Vons parking lot, there never fails to be some sort of line. As everyone here has stated, the tacos suadero (brisket) reigns supreme. Savory bits of slightly crispy brisket scooped onto petite corn tortilla discs that I like to douse with any of the four or so homemade buckets of assorted salsa. Suadero aside, the chorizo and asada are also tasty picks. At $1.25 (or was it $1.50) each, my tummy and my wallet are happy. OCD as I am, I bring along a giant roll of paper towels and am good to wolf down four to six tacos on the spot.
