Unlike Hollywood Suite Outlet, they've earned my business for life. The lady here calls me prima lol. This is where it's at, I've had almost everything here and it's pretty much the tastiest. My favorites are the suadero (extra crispy of course), cabeza, and tripas. Bean burrito is also pretty awesome, they add quite a bit of cheese though. Echo Park is a tough town.It's also tough taco territory. Don't even think about serving up some half assed tacos in Echo Park. Not if you want a regular clientele and some respect in the taco community. It's not exactly a taco mecca like Highland Park or El Sereno but the folks in Echo Park know a good taco when they taste one. Which brings us to the Taco Zone at Alvarado and Montana Ave. These ladies know how to prepare a taco. Soft toasted corn tortillas and tender meats with a smile. Homemade horchatas or cans of soda from a iced bucket to wash down your tacos. Take away salsa cups available for those on the go. Overall excellent tacos at one of Echo Park's most well known taco wagons. It's a familiar scene. A pot boils inside the truck, a cylinder grill smokes with meats, taco patrons hustle up to the counter peppering their tacos with chile salsas and onions and cilantro. read more

You could play the "It's not as good as it used to be when it was secret." card which is eerily similar to the "I only liked their debut album" card. But you would be full of shit. It is as good as ever. Same recipes. They've got it down. Roasty, delicious, chopped brisket. Red sauce that is a bit fiery and full of flavor. It holds a special place in the sense memory, which will demand that you revisit it often, even if you move out of the neighborhood. When I got the tacos, they looked exactly alike. When I saw everyone else's tacos, they all looked exactly the same, regardless of type of meat. This used to be my go to spot for late night tacos. Price is just right and they have so many options in terms of meat. Although to be honest some of them taste and look so similar I have a hard time telling them apart. Maybe it's because I'm always inebriated whenever I'm here. My favorite part of this truck is definitely the do it yourself salsa bar. Nothing worst than a taco joint that makes you feel like a giant leech for asking for extra salsa. And I love me some salsa. Came on a thurs night around 1 am or so after a show at the echoplex. My friends were hungry so I thought we should check this place out, based on reviews. The line wasn't very long. I got a lengua burrito while my friends got quesadillas. I ate half the burrito in like 3 minutes lol, I was so hungry. The lengua was amazingly tender and fresh, I was so happy. but then I started to realize that the rice had an unpleasant chalky texture to it. It dawned on me that the rice was super undercooked. I don't know how a chef could serve raw rice. I don't know if it's a rare mistake? or lack of trained staff? I'm sad. I can't really remember what I ate here. I seriously don't speak a word of Spanish and my friend did all the ordering for me, so apologies for the lack of recommendations in this review. But trust me nonetheless! Taco Zone is undoubtedly a 5-star dining experience. First of all, it's so cheap; 5 stars for value-for-money-ness. 5 stars for the actual food. Freaking delicious and very authentic-tasting, although I must admit I don't have much experience with Mexican food (other than Chipotle, that is). It's also perfect for a late-night snack as well as for an actual meal - tacos, quesadillas, mulitas and etc come in varying portions that will guarantee just-right satisfaction regardless of your level of hungriness. And last but not least, 5 stars for the actual experience. Gobbling down delicious Mexican food with your hands while using the back of a car as a table? Mmmm my favorite part. So yes. Go here if you're drunk, desperate and in the area because that's what happened to me. It was 1am, restaurants were closed, other taco trucks were folding camp and this is all I had. The salsa was ok, it wasn't very spicy but the meat was the buzz kill. The pollo, the asada, the pork...all dried and shredded like old jerky. You could barely recognize it as meat and they all tasted the same. I like a good meaty, chewy taco center and this did not have it at all. The ladies behind the truck were super nice and they work really hard but again...drunk, desperate and in the area. That should be your only criteria when you arrive here. read more

I've been frequenting this truck for over four years now. I'd go with friends and always ordered some tacos. I love tacos. To be honest, I just never got the hype. Until last night. WHATTTT the mulitaaa...... That melty, stringy queso... and the crispy lard-covered tortillas.... SO GOOD. I woke up this morning and the first thing I said was... "mulita" Something is different.... My friends and I affectionately refer to this place as Slimer's in reference to the color of one of their salsas. I like Arizas better than this place but usually the Zone is open later. Arizas also happens to be closer to where I live. The general rule is go to Arizas and if Arizas is not open, get your ass to the Zone. The Suadero is yum and so are the Carnitas. They have a large variety of tasty salsas for a taco truck. Now my only problem with this place is really the fact that almost every time I eat it, I either have to run to a bathroom or I have stomach issues the next morning. I'm not the only one either. This place is really good. Its on the side of the Vons parking lot in Echo Park serving bomb ass tacos from a cart latched on to a van. You'd never guess how awesome their tacos are. Everyone raves about how bomb the brisket tacos are, but if youre into funky indigenous flavors, get the tripas. if you get them extra crispy its like eating shreds of chicharon, but beef. tacos are about a buck fifty, and 4 of them usually get me full. The line can get long but it moves reasonably fast thanks to the efficient but friendly ladies running this place. There's entertainment while you wait in the form of hipsters' outfits and their attempts to impress each other by ordering in Spanish. I've had various tacos and the veggie burrito, as well as horchata, and it's all delicious. If you get it to go be sure to grab some cups of salsa and onions/cilantro, because their tacos are just meat and tortillas; you put the fixin's on yourself. The salsas are pretty good and they have a small eating area where you can rest your food/drinks. The boyfriend has been wanting his tripas burrito from Taco Zone forrreeeever, and he doesn't live close to it, and every time he's around LA he always tells me that we're going to stop by Taco Zone. It never happened, that is until last night! I haven't been here in like forever, just because I always go to Sonia's Taco Truck in Eagle Rock =) Her asada and cheese burritos are bomb! Anyways.... We got here around 9ish on a Wednesday night. Although there were already a few people there, there was only 2 people ahead of us who didn't get their order yet. I ordered a carne asada and cheese burrito NO rice or beans and my bf got a tripas burrito with everything or con todo. It took about 10 minutes to get our burritos, which isn't bad. They also have a nice set up in front of their little taco truck with onions and cilantro, cabbage and cucumber, pico de gallo, limes, red sauce, green sauce, and their avocado green sauce. My boyfriend looooves the avocado green sauce. It's just way to spicy for me. I just opted for a lot of limes and the pico de gallo to go with my all meat and cheese burrito. So for the food... he liked his tripas burrito. He said although he's had it better on other nights, he still enjoyed it with all that avocado green sauce he put on it. My asada and cheese burrito was good, not great, but good. My boyfriend had a bite and liked it, but then pointed out that he thought it was carnitas and not asada... I was totally bummed... I really wanted asada... ='( I still made the best of it and with the limes and pico de gallo I added, it was good. Towards the end the meat got pretty dry and it was hard for me to swallow. Although I didn't get the asada I wanted, I would still come back since my boyfriend loves this place. Hopefully they give me the right kind of meat next time though!!!! I love Taco Zone. It's 2 blocks from my house and it's open forever late. Plus, there's always parking in the Von's lot so no worries about tickets. It always feels a little bit like a weird sidewalk party that you kinda wanna be in on...but mostly for the food, not the people. My faves here are the al pastor, veggie and carnitas tacos. Suadero is pretty excellent too, but I gotta say al pastor is really my jam. That's why they almost always run out of it! ;-( The salsa bar is so generous and yum. Also, their horchata is pretty solid, which is doubly good because I honestly haven't found a lot of horchata I want to drink in LA in the year I've lived here (maybe I just haven't been to the right places?). This is by far my FAVORITE place to grab tacos in LA. It trumps every other taco truck I've tried in taste, quality of food, and salsas.I end up going to this Taco Zone every time I am back in LA for school breaks. I usually end up going after a good night of drinking and other nefarious things cause let's be honest, tacos are awesome when you got the drunchies So here's a breakdown of awesome things to get: For lighter appetites: Tacos are the way to go if you got the light munchies. Get the carnitas, lengua, suadero, pollo, or the carne asada. The quality of the meat is pretty good considering it is a truck. If you like cheese, hit up the mullitas, they're like mini-quesadillas with meat in them. Mullitas are a new favorite of mine For heavier appetites: Burritos are awesome. Try any of the meats above and it's pretty satisfying. The quesadillas are just beastly and totally worth splitting with a friend if you're eating a burrito. What makes this place really great is the delicious salsa and sauce. It's so popular that they usually run out if you get there too late on a weekday. The red sauce and pepper salsa have a good kick, and their avocado sauce is phenomenal. Squeeze some limes on them tacos and burritos and pour some sauce on, its gonna be a good night. read more

My BF and I found this place on the way home from Ktown and we're so glad we did! We ordered an al pastor quesadilla, buche taco, and asada taco. The asada taco was good, the meat wasn't fatty or tough. The buche was very good, good texture, wasn't soft or mushy. The al pastor was flavored differently but still good nonetheless. I think the al pastor had more of a spice rub instead of a marinade but it was delicious! Wasn't greasy. Would we go again? YEAAAAAH! read more

I felt no need to write a review until last night Monday the 17th of August I saw a little shit bag-pussy-ass gang banger on a cheap ass mountain bike roll up all methed out, to collect payment from from the lady running the truck. While his fat little buddy with a backpack waited down the street, hmmm he probably had a squirt gun. After the yelp party in Long Beach, Anthony S and I were craving tacos as we didn't eat any at the party and while driving up the 710, Taco Zone came to mind. It didn't take that long to get there, even if a certain Mr. S almost got us killed (ahem). We decided we were hungry enough to tackle four tacos each. I had the al pastor, carnitas, lengua and buche. Four tacos for $5.25. Anthony's four cost just $5 but it may because I went with those "crazy meats" and he stuck with carne asada and al pastor. My favorite of the four was the lengua. I didn't care for the buche that much and had trouble telling the al pastor apart from the carnitas. Both were a little too dry for me. But I liked the truck in general with its plentiful salsas and the nice people running the truck. Erm, I mean stall pulled by a truck. That's right, this isn't your typical taco truck. Sometimes, a meal out becomes more than just grabbing a bite. Sometimes, it's a cultural experience, a chance to explore one's world, and enjoy one of the little things that makes living in LA unique. OK, so maybe I'm getting carried away ;) We were clued into Taco Zone by a friend who's obsessed with this place. When we heard of the odd location and hours (7pm-3am), we weren't sure when we'd get a chance to try it. We're in the valley, and heading to Sunset and Alvarado late in the evening seemed like a lot of work. Last night we went to Jitlada for the third time. I'll save comments for a Jitlada review, but suffice it to say we left there with some room in our bellies. Well, seemed like as good a time as any to head just a little further south and get into the taco zone. So it's parked at the curb next to a Von's. Bonus: Plenty of parking!! We got there around 8pm and there were about 3 people in line ahead of us. My guess is it's a different story as it gets later and bar-hoppers stumble over for a late-nite fix. We tried three tacos: carne al pastor, al suadero, and the carnitas. BTW, they only serve tacos, burritos, and quesadillas, filled with a decent selection of beef and chicken preparations (not to mention tripas, cabeza, and other unmentionables). Tacos are $1.25 each. They have an excellent "salsa bar" set up. We grabbed our salsa and waited a few minutes for our tacos. Fellow 'Zoners' milled about, everyone enjoying the sweet anticipation as Metro buses and Honda Civics zoomed by. We grabbed our little bag of neatly wrapped tacos and ate (wait for it) on the hood of my car. We were just following the example set by pretty much everyone else. What an experience! So, how are the tacos? Excellent! We couldn't tell the difference between suadero and al pastor. All three were moist with definite crunch where the meat/fat was nicely crisped. The little corn tortillas were supple and didn't break. The salsa is fresh and flavorful. All in all, an excellent taco experience. Next time, we're getting a dozen and bringing them home. You know what tonight's flight to the Taco Zone was missing? a night of drinks, natch. there's something about Mexican food after a night of one-too-many drinks that just makes it P-E-R-F-E-C-T. seeing as i was stone cold sober tonight, the food seemed to be missing that little je-ne-sais-quoi... My friend, who's been raving about the place for months - swears by their suadero. I'd never had it before. so i tried a suadero taco & an asada taco. they both kinda tasted the same... but i liked how you could build your own taco due to their plentiful selection at their salsa bar (counter? ledge?). but i realized, i don't really like tacos - i prefer burritos... so i'll give them another try and go for the burrito next time... and yes - they have napkins - grab a couple when you grab your plate. cheap it was clean and neat since i was there early... don't know about after the drunken crowd though - but if you're drunk, do you really care? read more

Where would I be without Taco Zone? On how many drunken nights would liters of beer and whiskey have waited longingly in my stomach for something, anything to soak them up -- for delicious meat and perfectly grilled tortillas that would never come. Nigh on 2 years ago, I came to Los Angeles from the mecca of Mexican food. I came from a place where the people swim in rivers of frozen margaritas, where cups runneth over with molten queso, where reputations are made on the backs of big-as-yo'-face burritos, and broken by little, unassuming orange peppers. I loved it deeply, and I dreamed the impossible dream -- that LA would live up to my great Mexpectations (too much?). And yet, at every turn I was foiled by bland, flavorless Mexican food. It was a crime almost less forgivable than outright badness, it was all just ... average. Where was the soul, the passion, the FIRE? Where was the Mexican restaurant that could sate my hunger? Well, I still haven't found it, but Taco Zone gives me hope that such a holy grail exists within this city. There are a million taco trucks in this city, but none that I've tried stands up to the Zone. Folks seem to agree, cause there's almost always a crowd. It's not that things are done much differently here; it's just that they're done better and with a care that's obvious in each bite. Well, that and the suadero. Good lord, the suadero. I've gathered that suadero comes from roughly around the ribs of the cow, but the specifics outside of that elude me, except for this one: it's freaking delicious. You can order all of the standard fare here - asada, carnitas, brisket, or even tripe and lengua if you're into that sort of thing - without reservations, and they do a nice job with the quesadillas and burritos. My personal recommendation, however, is this: a handful of suadero tacos, with cheese. They will be served on top of two lightly grilled corn tortillas, with just enough cheese under the meat, not on top, which keeps the whole thing structurally sound. Pile on some onions and cilantro and head for the salsas. The rojas has a nice kick, though it's not as strong as the verde, but the real prize is the milder tomatillo-avacado amalgam. Apply the sauces as you see fit, take a few bites, and, as you savor them, try to imagine a world without Taco Zone. You'll realize very quickly that you don't want to live in that world. I really hate to cheat on Taco Bell/KFC on the other side of Vons, but the tacos are so damn good, and everything's so damn affordable.
