My go-to place for tacos when I am in town. Their salmon tikin xic is probably one of my favorite tacos I have ever had. Anywhere. And that's saying a lot. Just know what you're getting into when you head to this location. It's small, and BUSY. Be prepared to wait for your food for awhile. My last trip down (May/June 2018), I went on the day I arrived. The charred pepper relish thing on top totally made the taco amazing! - Chicken Mole - delish - Sweet Potato - The sweet potatoes themselves were SO well cooked, I could have had a bowl of that by myself. I am not sure if they lend themselves well to a taco as a vessel. The whole things lacks texture and becomes mushy - Mojo Fish - Delicious as well. The fish was a tad bit overcooked, but the salsa verde on top and the sauce was delicious. We waited about 15 min for our food, but honestly to goodness, we devoured 4 bags of chips with the medium salsa in between, lol! Great breakfast tacos. My wife and I came on a Saturday at 11, luckily on the weekends they serve breakfast tacos all day (on weekdays only until 11). It was packed but we were able to find a seat. Friendly and helpful staff. I got the Otto and bacon, egg and cheese which were both delicious and they have good salsa, I especially like the hot green one. I live right next to Tacodeli and I still haven't gotten tired of it. Their tacos are the BEST tacos I've ever had. More specifically, the Tickin Xic (salmon) taco is the best taco I will ever have. It's super underrated, but it's flavor is insane. Every time I make my friends get it, they add it to their taco rotation. I'm still amazed that I've probably ordered TD over 50 times and they've never messed up an order. It's also convenient that you can order over the phone, online or in person. To say they run a very tight ship would be an understatement. The reviews saying that the staff is grouchy or unpleasant has never been true for me. And if it is, I wouldn't knock off a star because a worker didn't smile at me. That's not why I'm there. Anyways, go to Taco Deli if you want to have a great start to the day. read more

I thought Tacodeli was just okay. Overall the tacos were pretty good, but nothing was really great aside from the Puerco Verde. The Heather (grilled queso fresco, black beans, guac), Tacoloco (brisket barbacoa - REALLY greasy and truly the greasiest taco I've ever had), and the Otto (beans, bacon, avocado) were all really lackluster. They were big with a lot of fillings, but the flavors just didn't meld. The Puerco Verde on the other hand was great. The pork was incredibly flavorful and not too greasy and balanced well with the rest of the taco. I would love to sit down with a bowl of the Puerco and just eat that. I was also bummed that the chips were incredibly stale and the queso was really coagulated. Their honey limeade was pretty good but VERY sweet and I'd get a water to go along with it. There are a lot cheaper taco joints all over Austin - in my opinion Tacodeli is just middle of the road for a little higher price. read more

Consider me one of the millions on the Tacodeli bandwagon. This place rules and no amount of good reviews will make up for the first time you experience a basket full of their tacos, rice, and beans. No frills, rushed but polite counter service, but life changing tacos. Now, I understand that Mexican and Tex-Mex are HOTLY debated in Austin, justifiably so. I think there are a lot of really good options and perhaps so many that its better to give them subclassifications. I would classify Tacodeli as a high-quality counter joint with super low prices. It is not, I repeat NOT, a classy sit down tablecloth kind of place. You'll see all walks of life, all breeds of dog, kombucha drinkers, yuppies, everything...and they coexist because Tacodeli rules. Every time we come to Austin, this is literally the first stop on the trip. Our garmin has it permanently programmed in the favorites section. Every time we come I spend 10 minutes panicking about which tacos to order (of the seemingly hundreds of options). Every time, I pick correctly. No matter what you order, its going to rule. That said, my favs are the scallops taco (only on Thursday), the pork mole taco, the frontera fundido sirloin taco, and the rice and beans. For breakfast, the ranchero taco was pretty killer too. Holy crap, best tacos I've ever had. I bought these at the Austin farmer's market (5th and Guadalupe or so downtown) on a Saturday morning, and the sticker on the taco wrapping listed the Spyglass address. Got the breakfast one, which was fantastic, and just for kicks, the bison one. Holy crap. Bison. That was amazing. The meat was super rich and had some sort of magic sauce (including sugar??), and the shell was super moist and simply incredible. Maybe sitting in that warmer kept it moist or made it even extra moist. Anyway, get the bison and get it with the salsa verde and you'll be super happy. read more

From all the different styles of tacos I have tried across the USA, Tacodeli is the best taco spot in this country. Certainly this is one bold claim, esp with the huge amount of taco and TexMex places across Austin. I still stand by it. I have been going to Tacodeli for over a decade now. I have also taken many friends visiting Austin to this place. Location is off Barton Skyway on South Mopac at intersection of Spyglass Rd. It is right next to the Greenbelt trails in South Austin. Tacodeli is open every day: 7am-3pm weekdays, 8am-3pm weekends. Plenty of parking on the street if the lot is full. This is the smallest venue of stores, has small indoor seating and mostly outside patio seating. Nearly all ingredients on Tacodeli come from farms in the Austin area or just outside the city. You can tell there is an extreme fresh preparation of their vegetables served with all their tacos. There are several reasons why I put Tacodeli in such high standing. First, you have a such a wide variety menu options. You can get many different tacos for beef, chicken, pork, fish, shrimp, breakfast or veggie tacos. One cool thing about the breakfast tacos you can simply build your own. Tacodeli also have a great variety of salsa, fresh soup, and salads. You can order any 2 tacos and make it a plate with rice and beans. You can get tacos on your choice of flour, corn or wheat tortilla. Tacos average between $3-4 each and two usually will fill a normal person up. Tacodeli has a weekly rotation of specialty tacos that are also added to the daily menu. Sooooooo many tacos to mention, so I will try to get through many as I can Cowboy taco: overnight seasoned run on steak sirloin, mixed with guacamole, grilled peppers & onions, roasted corn and queso fresco served on top. Their signature taco. Frontera Fundido: Steak,chicken,or pork. Top with green bell peppers and onions, with a thin melted cheese glaze on top. Delicious! Banh Mi (Tues only): This might be my favorite of all. Marinated pork shoulder, carrots, basil & cilantro, in a fantastic green chilie tomatillo sauce. Just too good. Chile Relleno (Wed only): A spicy messy shredded pibli pork in a orange ancho pepper sauce. Served in a roasted poblano pepper top with purple onions & queso fresco. Scallop (Thu only): Grilled scallops, with a mix of poblano & red peppers and a garlic lime mojo sauce. Otto taco (breakfast): no eggs, Refried black beans, crispy bacon, avocado topped with monterrey jack cheese. Boom! Al Pastor: Marinated pork with their house made adobo sauce. Topped with guajillo peppers, cilantro & onions. El Picosito: Now served daily, thin diced beef tenderloin in a unique spicy chipotle sauces, topped with avocado & quest fresco. Bold flavor. The house made sauces are one of the staples of this great restaurant. Verde is a mild green salsa. Roja is their version of red salsa with great smokey tomato flavor, mixed with serranos, onions and garlic. The next two sauces are on their own level. The orange habanero salsa is true fire. It gives you that 5 second burn delay by putting it on a chip. This is quite a powerful spicy flavor and it the hottest stuff they got. Finally the king of all is their famous Dona sauce. It is a thick green spicy sauce that you just want on everything. Dona is their signature sauce with an unmatched spicy flavor. You can always order chips & salsa ($2.50) and get unlimited refills on chips. Get as much as you want at the salsa bar. Tacodeli also does catering and large to go orders. Many people will bulk order breakfast tacos for their office or hire for a function. You can also place to go orders on the phone to skip the line. Now Tacodeli certainly is a popular place so don't be surprised if you get there at primetime lunch hour and a line is out the door. Usually the line moves fairly quickly and the food wait time is about 10-15min. Just call in an order if you are in a rush. You can skip the line and go to the to go order pickup inside. I would hope any local Austin resident has been here. Any tourist in Austin should certainly make Tacodeli one of the places on their food checklist for the huge variety in this city. The food here is exceptional, even better after a hike at the nearby Greenbelt Trails. It is pup friendly, so you can sit outside, enjoy your tacos and enjoy. However the space is small, so if it is raining or cold, you have to take it to go or tolerate the weather. Also, the staff tends to be pretty brash - but that is probably because it is so constantly busy - it's loud and everyone is waiting. If you're there on a Friday or Saturday for lunch, get the ceviche special. And add some Doña sauce. read more

After trying Tacodeli for the first time, I was very impressed by the expansive taco/tortas/breakfast taco menu they have. In addition, they sell Holy Cacao cake balls which are to-die-for. I ordered the Puerco Verde taco which was pretty good. It's a tender pork taco w/ the works (onions, cilantro, etc.) and tomatillo sauce, but I still think Torchy's Green Chile Pork Taco is much better. I didn't have a chance to try their queso or breakfast tacos ... but for now I think I'll stick to Torchy's just because it's more convenient and as for now, I like it better. I also want to add that their Dona Sauce (the creamy green one?) is not as spicy as the ones in East Austin at taco stands ... it doesn't even stand a chance against those when it comes to levels of spiciness. read more

I LOVED this location. Cute, 1 mile from my house, and love the traditional Austin vibe. I've always had good service there until tonight. I placed an order online (which I've done many times before) and was going to run and pick it up. Right after I ordered, I got an error code on the website. I logged out and tried ordering again. I then called Tacodeli to make sure I wasn't charged, because I didn't want to double order. They said they didn't receive my order. I then asked if I was able to order over the phone since I tried a few times and wasn't able to place an order online due to an error. The person on the phone said they were unable to help me since other people were able to order online and it must be an issue with me. I never understood a good taco until I moved to Austin. It's not a Texas thing...it's an Austin thing! I don't get the bad reviews on Taco Deli and think they just ordered the wrong thing or didn't add salsa. It's literally deliciousness rolled up in a tortila. The Dona sauce transforms any taco into a taco of spicy heaven, especially the Jess breakfast taco. The cowboy taco...omg....amazing concoction of beef tenderloin, corn, onions, and guac. I could survive on one of them, but two does the trick. The fundido is a winner also. The staff is great too. They bring your food out to you without you needing to hold onto a number or waiting at the front. They clean up for you if they see you have dirty dishes. They'll even bring a dog bowl of water for your furry friend. So why the one star? Their queso is no bueno. It's okay as I don't need to inhale tons of chips and queso anyway at my age, but every now and hungover then it would be nice. Support your local taco shop and head over to Taco Deli right now.
