This taco truck gave huge portions and was delicious! I came here very hungry after a run and ordered a sausage and egg breakfast burrito as well as an al pastor quesadilla. I thought I would be able to eat more than just the burrito, but I had one piece of quesadilla first and could barely finish the burrito after. These were both sooooo good, and they gave a great variety of salsas with guac, tomatoes and jalapenos, and sour cream. Most of the salsas were too spicy for me, but one was mild, and I enjoyed trying them. I paid $23 total, which is a little pricier than other taco trucks around here, but the food was worth it. Service was super quick! Less than 10mins for 5 items cooked hot and fresh! Tacos were basic meat and cheese but you're able to add veggies if you want. I opted not to as this was my first time and just needed something quick for my family before a long day at a dance competition. Arrived around 9am and there was 1 other person in front of me and still was in and out in about 15-20mins. The area at this time is also completely shaded so you can sit outside comfortably on the provided picnic tables while you wait! You really can beat breakfast tacos for around $3 each and they don't skimp on the ingredients! Came here for a quick lunch and decided to try their vegetarian offerings. 2 tacos for 10 bucks is decent value these days, which would've been absurd a few years back. The tacos I received were packed with veggies, although I realize I'm not a huge fan of sweet potatoes in my tacos. Both salsa were great, the creamy green one was not as spicy as I'm accustomed to for that color of salsa but still tasty. This is the first place we went to when we arrived in Austin due to a friend's recommendation, and it was a great start to our intro to Texas! We ordered four tacos, and chips & queso. Here were our thoughts: Potato, egg & cheese breakfast taco w/ avocado - really good! Egg was well-seasoned and had great flavor. The potatoes were nicely cooked and were not too soft. Had a nice bite to it so the taco was multi-note. Migas Taco - flavor is good, but I personally felt that the tortilla chips got too worked into the egg so it didn't get to stand out in the taco as much as I wanted it to. Would like to have tasted more depth in texture in terms of crunch, but it's a solid breakfast taco! Chorizo, egg & cheese breakfast taco - my partner thought it tasted good! Had a nice flavorful grease to it from the chorizo. Barbacoa Taco - my partner felt that the meat was a bit too dry for his liking, but had good flavor. Chips & queso - this was a hit! Queso was super flavorful and had a great consistency. Chips were also light and crispy. Couldn't stop eating it! Ambiance - pretty hole in the wall with a truck and some picnic tables. I love the outdoor patio seating, not so much the take-out dining they pack their food in, but it's for the convenience (Austinites, give Maria's a break)! Maria's came so highly recommended, but I though it was average at best. The "corn on a cob" is elote served on a plate - no cob. With the chilli, cheese and mayo, it didn't taste bad, but nothing to rave about. The corn was overcooked and soggy. Tacos are double the standard size so two is plenty for lunch. Several tortilla options were available, but we weren't asked for our preference - fortunately we noticed the sign afterwards and swapped out the default flour tortilllas with corn tortillas. I had the al pastor tacos, fish tacos and rice and beans. Everything was lightly seasoned and bland. It worked for the fish since it's a delicate flavor, but everything else left a lot more to be desired. The best al pastor has a slight sear, and this one appeared to be cooked in its juices. While they were generous with the meat, you're paying more compared to typical street tacos, and I had better versions of everything from the many taco trucks in the city. read more

We ate here seems like a long time ago now. Awesome food and an awesome setting. We tried it because it was a triple D place. Lots of color and signs and pictures everywhere= my ADHD was a level 10! We read all about Maria's history from her picture. Cool restroom decor too. We went with the Al Pastor plate and the Pollo Guisado Taco, Avacado tacos and some Queso. We weren't sure about the meat and pineapple of the Al Pastor but it was a delicious combo. Beans and rice were good. All the tacos were great. Amazing experience! This place was so fun, I didn't want to leave! This is the kind of place where you can really feel the genuine history, and you can tell the locals enjoy visiting this spot. You can't go wrong with their menu, and the line moves rather quick. I like how they have photos of many of their options also. The inside decor is quirky and fun and gives you something to stare at while you're waiting in line, not to mention the ongoing Jenga game! You have to sit outside to really enjoy the music head on. The band they had playing was awesome, and unlike anything I've ever heard before. It was kind of a mix of rock and gospel, and so fun to listen to and dance to. My crew and I arrived at the airport in Austin starved... My boss was already in town and had done a little research about where we should eat. He told us about Maria's Taco Xpress and it sounded pretty good so we decided to meet there before we went to our hotel. He said that is was referred to as "The Hippie Church" on Sunday. It was Sunday so I was eager to see what in the world that meant. We arrived to find very little parking available for the restaurant. After looking for a spot for about 10-12 minutes we just decided to park in front of the Walgreens. We approached to see the line out the back door. Luckily, my boss had already gotten a spot in line so we just eased on by the crowd. You could hear the live music from inside so I was thinking that with the crowd and all of the energy we were going to be in for a treat. We placed our orders (6 people) and began looking for a place to sit. After several minutes and a few table moves we found a spot outside under the 2nd story patio. I loved the "service" that was happening on the stage. I quickly figured out what they meant by "Hippie Church" There are literally old hippies singing and dancing to songs and hymns up on stage. There were at least 10 band members a playing various instruments and singing. It was fun! They did a version of Amazing Grace set to "The Animals", "House of the rising sun" that was oddly awesome. So far, 4 star place... After about 25 minutes of entertainment we started getting curious about our food. Again, we were famished from the early flight. We got up, looked around, and asked the guy about our plates. He said it would be right up. 5-8 minutes later we see our number pop up on the screen. Eagerly, we went and retrieved our food and came back and dished it out to our crew. I can't' speak for everyone at the table about the quality of the food because I didn't ask, but how a dish like I had, could be tasteless is mind boggling. I ordered the Buddha bowl. It sounded wonderful in the description but lacked any true seasoning on any of the components. White rice, plain black beans, corn, cilantro, onions, a fried egg, and seasoned shredded chicken. Nothing... tasted like nothing... No wonder they have so many toppings and salsa's to choose from. You have to flavor your whole meal yourself. I ate enough to tame the beast raging inside me but the food reduced the 4 star rating I had to a 2 star experience. Blah! read more

The location was a huge contention between Marias and developers many years go, and eventually landed a few yards back from the original spot. Needless to say, all the changes this place has been through has kept one thing consistent, they have good tacos. It's a funky dive, where the main entrance is at the back of the building with a front patio for outdoor seating. Whatever kind of taco you want, they'll make it and they have plenty of standard-bearers. It's just not tacos, of course, they do offer Tex-Mex plates as well and serve beer. I recently visited this Mexican food truck and i was impressed with the first bite I had. I ordered the the best burrito I had ever had, I've tried many other burritos from other places and I have to say these are the best ones. The service was amazing they didn't make any faces at me. I have had other experience where the employees make faces at me for asking for more ketchup, yet here I asked for more salsa and they gave me the salsa with no complications at all. This place has loyal staff - many of whom have been there for over two decades! The breakfast tacos are good here, and it's a great place to drop in for lunch/dinner too - love the al pastors. I can't believe I've more or less been sleeping on this longtime certified ATX classic for years now, usually eschewing it for newer, more "updated" sources of breakfast taco goodness, but after my most recent trip to Austin I became hooked on this spot, and will now likely find it conversely hard to sample breakfast tacos anywhere else! Established in 1996 this stalwart is a holdover from the days when Austin was still actually weird and there wasn't a tech-bro in site. Located inauspiciously in a south Lamar shopping center shared only with a Walgreens as opposed to the coffee and craft beer hipster meccas that often accompany newer breakfast taco spots, the decor is ramshackle bric-a-brac galore with a Tex-Mex twist, the crescendo of which is the massive, slightly creepy folk-art style statue of Maria herself rising over the roof of the compound like a towering taco goddess. A walled off outdoor table-filled courtyard leads into the equally over the top kitsch-filled dining room where the you oder from the staff behind the counter and take your ticket and wait for your grub. Said staff is about as efficient and effortless as you would expect in a decades old institution such as this, operating at the level of the proverbial well oiled machine. During the brief wait you should of course visit the salsa bar and make sure to load up on extra tiny cups of the deliciously creamy and spicy green sauce, and also scan the photos on the wall depicting the many wild and wonderful celebrity fans of the place. When you receive your breakfast tacos you will realize you are quite likely tasting the platonic version of them, sizable but not unwieldy, with the perfect balance of scrambled egg to cheese to protein ratio, served in true Austin fashion on pillowy light flour tortilla (and yes you MUST select flour tortilla on breakfast tacos in ATX, its long been beyond debate for me at this point). Even better than the regular ones however was the special during my most recent visit, a slightly larger fajita style beef taco tricked out with a generous hunk of avocado and a Poached as opposed to scrambled egg, generation a delicious is extremely sloppy mash-up of breakfast and lunch style tacos, and one I would gladly eat at any time of the day. You'll enjoy these delicious tacos in the old school atmosphere surrounded by a happily diverse group of assorted Austinites, which unfortunately is definitely not the case at a lot of the newer spots around town. Making the place even cooler than usual on a recent Saturday morning was the lady selling really cool trinkets made my indigenous peoples in Southern Mexico and Guatemala in the courtyard, which only endeared the place to me that much more. I'll be back asap you should get there too, to get a glimpse of the Austin that inspired the masses to flock here in the first place, but is now fading beyond recognition more and more rapidly by the minute. read more

A large deck covers most of the patio and I saw evidence of misting fans to alleviate the summer heat. Today, however, a brisk breeze compensated for the 80 degree day of late November. Our party of five had chips & queso, soft tacos (chicken), and gorditos (beef, chicken, and pork). Everyone (save me) praised them highly. I'm just not much into Mexican food and was primarily on a DDD pilgrimage, so I couldn't appreciate the heavy and mostly bland food. Maria's did offer a number of sauces and toppings to spice things up a bit, and that helped. The queso was quite spicy without any help, and I did like it. OMG best taco place I got when I was in Texas. I had already eaten a full breakfast prior to stumbling upon this place. I got one al pastor taco just to try it, and it was humongous!!!! It was the size of two tacos, so totally worth the price. It was so nice and juicy and flavorful. I waited kind of a while for one taco without any other people there, so they definitely took their time with it. I also kind of love that there was an egg on my taco. When I was 12, I think, I was watching the Food Network. Rachael Ray's "$40 a Day" was on and she was visiting Austin, TX. She went to Maria's Taco Xpress, ordered their Migas taco and absolutely loved it. For some random reason, I will always remember that moment. When I started traveling as a young adult, I promised myself that I would try that taco - and boy, I did. I always come to Maria's when I'm visiting Austin. This is an OG Austin establishment. Their Migas taco is indeed to die for, and is the best one I've had in Texas. But what I think is a hidden gem on Maria's menu is the steak fajitas, either on a plate or as a taco. The steak is the most tender piece of meat you will have in your life. It cuts through your teeth like butter. It has a really nice Argentinean-style marinade, which is likely a reflection on Maria's upbringing. Just be warned: the fajitas for 2 is really fajitas for about 4 lol. It's a huge portion!!! Sure, Torchy's and Tacodeli are cool, but you can't beat this restaurant. It is truly a special place - to Austin and myself. read more
