We lived in Austin years ago when we discovered Taco Deli. Before foodies. Before food trucks. Before Austin was so cool. I don't live in Texas anymore, and this is hands down one of the top things I miss. I even had a friend overnight me salsa once. Yeas, it was worth it. Needless to say, it's busy and crowded, so just expect that before you show up. The food comes out relatively fast considering how many people are waiting. I can't believe this place has not been rated yet. It is always packed, at least at lunch time. I am sure some of them are yelpers. Taco Deli has some of the best tacos. Fresh ingredients and not overly complicated. I stick to the seafood tacos. They have two different fish tacos on their regular menu: catfish with shredded cabbage and grilled tilapia with guacamole. Both are excellent. On Wed, Thur, and Friday their specials are shrimp, scallop, and ceviche tacos respectively. Each of one them is excellent, but I am partial to the ceviche taco: thinly sliced tilapia, cooked in lime juice and topped with fresh guacamole. you have to get there early because they typically run out of the ceviche. The other stuff, pork/chicken/beef, is good too. But not as good as the seafood. The menu has more items, like tortas. I have never tried them. It is a little pricey, especially when compared to Mexican supermarket taco eateries. You could easily spend $10-12 for 3 tacos and a drink. If you are a taco fan, you should give this place a try. read more

Incredible!! Yummiest tacos in town, with every variation you can imagine. Also- as a vegetarian, it's awesome to go in knowing you can get a lot of different options. My favorite is the Heather taco. They just remodeled the location on Spyglass, too, so it doesn't feel as cramped (at least for the people taking your order). we live somewhat near and finally made an effort to find this place. it's not the sort of location that is obvious unless you live in this little cluster of apartments and townhomes etc. there was some confusion when ordering as we had requested a wide variety of items to sample. the counter guy was insistent that I tell him which basket each item should go in. we are a family and just planned to throw it all on the table and have a free-for-all; take a bite, pass it around. I had read that the ceviche here was fantastic and it was. what I was not clear on is that it's served in a taco format. that was new to me. my wife is a tortilla soup lover. and they make theirs just the way she likes it, clear broth and not too salty. joel (taco deli employee? manager? owner?) stopped at our table and asked if we were enjoying everything. my wife gave him the "it's awright". he made a sad face and sulked away. this luke work responce didn't sit well with him. he was back in a few moments to investigate how her impression could be repaired. first, he inquired on our order. she explained how we have been lovers of the taco al pastor for over a decade. these taco treats are a highlight on our trips all over the yucatan. joel admitted that the taco al pastor was not their strong point, they don't have the correct grill (looks like that gyro thing at the greek restaurant) and they don't have the fresh pineapple. he ran to get a menu and made some stars next to what he thought were flagship tacos from the menu. he also suggested the taco of the week as always hitting a high mark. his conclusion was to go back inside and come back with two tacos for us to sample, the cowboy and the pork w/ green chili. WOW! he was right! those are some fantastic tacos. I had been happy w/ everything we ordered before, but these were really spectacular and my wife now sported and enthusiastic approach to taco consumption. that cowboy taco will surely become a staple item in our diet. huge tender strips of beef loaded with flavor. this place is definitely worth coming back to. I can also say that all of the chicken tacos we ordered were also fantastic. big pieces of tender meat loaded with flavor. the tortilla soup had a slight bitter taste. we both tried to figure out where it was coming from and eventually blamed the 1/4 lime that was squished and dropped into the hot broth. limes can vary greatly so we decided it was at no fault to of the soup and will order the soup again as it was otherwise perfect. our order came to around $24. this was six taco, one soup and two drinks. plenty to feed this family of four (not counting the 7 month old, he don't eat no tacos...yet) read more

I eat a breakfast taco from Taco Deli at least once a week. During the week they make a bunch of tacos and put them in a covered warming dish by the register, for quick and easy taco access. They put little stickers on them to tell you what kind it is. Quick and delicious - gotta love that. I highly recommend the egg, bean and cheese tacos. The "papas" is a little weird. They are mashed potatoes, but mashed so much it's more like puree. I couldn't figure out what it was the first time or two... The taste is fine, but the texture is not potatoey - almost runny. Skip it and save yourself the "what is that?" thoughts. Anyway, I digress. The salsa is also very tasty. Be warned. The creamy green one is HOT. (They make 2 green ones, and this is the creamy looking one.) I like spicy, but sometimes I have to limit myself on this one to keep from blistering my lips. The red sauce is "medium" but has good flavor, and the mild green is good, I just like a little more kick. I ordered the soup once for lunch and it was also very good. The counter person told me it was enough for a meal. I disagree. It's a course, not an entree. Get a taco to go with, or you might want to gnaw on your arm later. read more

These are the best breakfast tacos I've ever had. They have a huge selection of fillings and salsa (my favorite is the Otto or the Jess Special). During the week they only serve breakfast until 11 AM. They also have daily specials. It isn't unusual for this place to have a line out the door on weekends so be prepared to wait a few minutes. Taco Deli does not skimp on variety. They have numerous variations of beef, pork, chicken, fish, and vegetarian tacos. I love the garlicky mojo fish taco and the ahi tuna special that is occasionally posted on the counter. I personally find the sides (chips, beans, rice, guac) to be mediocre, but I do love the tacos. It is reasonably priced and the food comes out relatively fast. The line at lunch is usually super-long, so try an early (11:40) or late (1:30) lunch (and beware of flies). read more

Their potatoes (papas) are mexican mashed potatoes and not what you'd expect in a breakfast taco, but they're even more delicious than the potatoes that usually come in breakfast tacos. Maybe it's the novelty, but I'd say it's better than Torchy's. As at Torchy's the tacos are hip, imaginative, and not cheap. We intended to run here on the Greenbelt from Hill of Life for breakfast, but we got lost and ended up driving here for lunch. I enjoyed the Cowboy and Pollo Fantastico tacos. I saw somewhere that Texas Monthly named the Cowboy best taco. But if beef isn't your thing they have tacos for just about any diet. The guacamole is creamy, limey, and pricey but good. Just recently found this Taco Deli. It's hidden back in a small neighborhood, parking can be troublesome at lunch time however I've never seen anyone ticketed. Order lines fairly fast and the food is prepared quickly. Plenty of seating compared to the north location (Duval and Mopac). read more

Just passing through Austin and staying with friends in the neighborhood who insisted these were the best breakfast tacos around - despite the kind of random location, they were right. We sat out in the shade on the front patio, which is bigger than the restaurant itself. Awesome service: we unknowingly arrived just after they stopped serving breakfast, but after hearing we'd driven from California, Russell went above and beyond to get it going again for us. The Migas was good but the Otto was even better: black beans, bacon, avocado, eggs and white cheddar. Two thumbs up from tablemates for the Vaquero and Popeye, too. Love these tacos. They are just crazy good. These are not your band ordinary Taco Bell tacos, these are imaginative tasty tacos. My favorite is the mole chicken tacos. Wow the mole sauces is perfect. I ask for no raw onions just to keep my breath fresh for after lunch appointments. They close at 3pm so they are the best lunch spot. Seating is mostly outside at the south location, and lots of indoor seating at the north mopac location. read more

The best restaurant find I have ever stumbled upon!!! A friend recommended it to me and told me where to meet her for lunch one day. I have been down Spyglass to run on the trails before and have a few friends living in the apartments, yet was shocked when i realized that there was a little slice of heaven right there all along. I wanted to LOVE taco deli because its so close to my house. But i just liked it. My tacos which were supposed to come with cheese didnt, and the chicken is cut into pretty huge cubes which made for a huge mess when i couldnt bite through them and either had to fit them into the mouthful or drop it charmingly out of my mouth into the basket. What a great little spot! I had eaten here years back when going to the greenbelt but it's been a long time ago. We had an hour to kill before an appointment close by so decided "why not grab an early lunch(11am)". I had their special taco, some picadillo with what looked like pine nuts(but red) and queso on it & stuffed in an Anaheim peeper. I'm sure I just butchered the description but holy cow, that was a great taco!! I also had their Al Pastor, which I get at every taco place that I can, it was my first love with regards to tacos. It was good, but not the best I've had. Staff was super friendly. Our chips/queso arrived after the tacos which was a little bit of a bummer, but that stuff happens. Food is 4.5 but it's getting bumped to 5 for service. We came on a busy Sunday, moved to the side since we needed to figure out what we wanted, and the cashier actually came out from behind ("I heard you said this was your first time, what interests you?"). We ended up going with his recommendation, and at the last second adding another taco since we weren't sure it was enough food. Went with cowboy and space cowboy (vegetarian) and migas. Honestly, migas (our choice) wasn't bad, but didn't hold a candle to his recommendation, including adding the hot sauces (Dona with habanero because we like heat). Soooooooooooo good. Meat was very well seasoned according to the hubs, and I've never had a more flavorful portabello- so nice to find a place were the flavor isn't just in the meat (leaving us vegetarians to figure out how to add flavor ourselves!). Will definitely try to hit this office up again before we leave! Highly recommend! read more

I visited a Taco Deli location for the first time this past week. I was appalled by the individual serving packaging of tortilla chips. If chips are put into these bags when warm, chemicals from the plastic film are leeching into the chips. In addition, this film is headed straight for the landfill - it cannot be recycled. I ate at the restaurant and was served food on a paper plate with a plastic fork and a plastic cup for drinks. It is time to transition to reusable dishware when possible. Please consider being more conscious of the waste you produce and the impact you have on the environment. read more

The breakfast tacos here are awesome, probably second only to Maria's Taco Express in Austin. The Migas Taco is my personal favorite. The Royale version comes with Mexican mashed potatos, refried black beans and tortillas. Yum. The Jess Special and El Popeye both come recommended as well. My advice for weekend mornings: Call ahead. Not my favorite tacos or queso in town, but there is something about tacodeli that is absolutely crave worthy. Love the black refried beans, the happy taco, the cowboy, frontera fundito, and the queso is actually pretty damn good just wish they would give you a larger portion. Its proximity to the greenbelt makes it great choice for breakfast or lunch after a quick hike. Not enough indoor or outdoor seating. Very friendly taco people, and dog friendly. I would go for lunch- the specialty tacos don't get served till 11 and the breakfast tacos are no good imho. read more

The hanger steak taco special on Mondays is a work of art. It's up there with the Sistine Chapel, the first season of Rick and Morty, and the second season of Rick and Morty. I was full but I ordered a second one anyways. Everyone from Austin told me to check this place out and they did not steer me wrong.
