Breakfast tacos are an amazing idea and I wish I found out about these sooner. I stopped here back in March when visiting some friends and I loved this place. I'd seen and heard lots of great things about Tacodeli, so my expectations were probably too high. I went for lunch and ordered a blue plate special with the Cowboy and Chicken Mole tacos. Both were good enough, but nothing memorable. The mole sauce on the chicken was the highlight of the meal, but there wasn't enough chicken in the taco for me to really enjoy it. Overall pretty good, but I've had much better meals at Tyson's, Veracruz, and Torchy's as well as the dozens of tiny taqueria trailers in town. Taco Deli vs. Torchy's Tacos. Austin is a taco town and there are many options. But these two are Austin's iconic local chains. Each has its merits and I frequent both....often. For me, it comes down to this: Both places have great tasting and interesting tacos. The best tasting tacos are at Taco Deli. Mole tacos, the Mexico City, Al Pastor and Akaushi Picadillo are some of my favorites. And yay for Scallop Taco Thursdays! The fact that they use locally sourced (Heartbrand Ranch, Lightsey Farms, Oak Hill Farms, Pedernales Valley Farms....just to name a few) and organic ingredients makes a taste difference. Taco Deli WINS! Taco Deli's menu is bigger and they have a daily taco special. VS Torchy's menu is smaller and they have a monthly taco special. Taco Deli WINS! I can't help feeling the hit in my wallet every trip to Taco Deli. An average of nearly $4 a modest sized taco (although some tacos are more substantial than others, i.e. the meaty pork Chile Relleno vs. the lightly filled Akaushi Picadillo). I don't need a ton to fill me up but 2 of these tacos usually doesn't do the trick (so an $8 bill that might leave me hungry, since I'm not a fan of rice/beans combo plates). Torchy's tacos are much more fat; they are stuffed so many ingredients sometimes the double tortilla can't hold it all together. TORCHY'S WINS! Salsa. Salsa is secondarily important only to tacos. Taco Deli features a salsa bar and has several options and it's fun to try a variety of them. Torchy's adds sauces to some of their tacos vs. the salsa bar idea, and you can substitute upon request. But when I just want a side of chips and salsa, hands down my go-to is Torchy's Tomatillo salsa. TORCHY'S WINS! Branding: Torchy's "damn fine tacos" and the little devil dude is cool, and memorable. It's also cleverly embedded in some locations as unique works of art (check out the ceramic mosaic and the 1st Street location). The Tacodeli Mexican dude is kind of small, not used predominantly and not so memorable. TORCHY'S WINS! Hours: why, why, why does Taco Deli close so early? Boo. TORCHY'S WINS (by default)! I was visiting Austin for the weekend and was looking for some delicious street tacos and visited this place with the recommendation of my cousin. The place was packed to the brim at 11:00 AM on a Sunday but we got through the line fairly quickly. Like every other place in Austin, all the fountain drinks are locally sourced which is nice from the usual pace of soda options back home in DFW. I ordered the El Conquistador along with the Taco Loco with the rice plate special for an additional 2.99. The food turned out pretty tasty and the sauces were spicy and flavorful. I am addicted to Tacodeli! My favorite is the breakfast taco the "Otto". I haven't tried a lot of other tacos on the menu but Otto continues to be my favorite. If you're ever not sure what to do for lunch on a Thursday you MUST go to Tacodeli and get their scallop taco - life changing. Also a huuuge fan of their Cowboy Taco and Tacoloco! Taco deli has been a must go place every Saturday morning for me and my friend. Most of the time, we would call ahead for to go, the order is usually ready within 15 minutes. I have tried several tacos, I would say to avoid Cowboys tacos, they are very very greases. However, there are many kinds that are to die for. For example, Jess special which comes with Migas, cheese, and eggs. It's a bit different from other taco places in town. The cheese is shredded and usually isn't melted (which its a plus for me). I Also order potatoes and cheese tacos everytime I go. Smashed potatoes is very creamy and the texture goes with the tortilla perfectly!! The reward system is not bad for frequent visitors (75 points= 5 dollars =2 FREE tacos)!! Oh! And you get 60 points just to sign up! The watermelon fresca in my opinion is a bit sweet, or maybe cause I asked for no ice?! The refill is free which is a plus (most mexican places don't let you have free fresca refill). Hippy tacos? I dig. This place wasn't on my list during my Austin visit but sure am glad I got to try it out. There is a separate vegetarian menu, which helped me narrow down my choice. I ordered the the Heather and the Florentino. The Florentino was good but definitely needed some green sauce to bring in some flavor. The Heather has guacamole that had a nice kick to it and definitely my favorite of the two. If I had more time in Austin I'd definitely try out the rest of the vegetarian options and even get a breakfast taco (which Austin is known for). Btw the salsa bar was my favorite thing! One thing I learned from my visit to Austin is that taquerias are very prevalent around here - much like Peruvian chicken restaurants are in the DC metro area. So, finding a taco place was pretty much like throwing a dart at a map. I'm glad my dart landed at Tacodeli. The tacos were very flavorful and the gf made short work of the guacamole. I thought the guac was a little too spicy myself, as was the fish taco, but that's just my whitey Irish side talking. Their chicken tortilla soup, tho... The tacos are really small for the price. They are good though. Service is fast. Kinda horrible though that the cashier yells out, "Do you want to leave anything for the staff?" So they put you on the spot otherwise you look like you're a bad person if you don't leave a tip for a place without a waitress/waiter. I'll not go back there for this reason. We have come here dozens of times. This is by far my favorite location given its proximity to Houndstooth (I usually grab a coffee from there and then hop over to Taco Deli. My favorite tacos to get are the Otto which has black beans, avocado and bacon and jack cheese on a flour tortilla and the Vaquero which has scrambled eggs, grilled corn, roasted peppers and jack cheese on flour as well. These two are my go-to breakfast tacos. However, if I am ordering takeout (which I do when we have out of town guests) I throw in frontera fundido tacos (both chicken and steak) because they reheat nicely so I have them the next day. You can't go wrong with any of the tacos and they have so many options so it would be easy to find one that would fit your taste preferences. The STAR of the menu is the Dona sauce which is a spicy green sauce that when eaten conjures up the Hallelujah Chorus. It is almost a spiritual experience. Sometimes, coffee houses around town sell taco deli tacos at their establishments and if they are out of Dona sauce then I usually don't get a taco. Their Roja sauce is their version of a medium spicy sauce and is also very good. They have mild options for those of you who don't appreciate spicy salsas and an extremely spicy habanero sauce for those of you who like to be in physical pain eating your taco. This is by far my favorite breakfast taco place in Austin (and yes, I have had other breakfast tacos). I have never had a sauce as good as the Dona sauce anywhere else in Austin. read more

There are many good breakfast taco places in Austin so the competition for the "best" is intense. Many places do one or two things right, but very few get everything right... Tacodeli is one of those. The breakfast tacos are fantastic and their salsas are amazing. They make their salsas in house. What they buy (meat, veggies, etc) is usually locally sourced from organic farms and ranches. Their ingredients are probably the highest quality of all taco places in Austin. I have never found anything amiss. Their corn tortillas are also very good. We usually prefer flour, even at Torchy's, but Tacodeli has very good corn tortillas (all are excellent ). I am not sure if they make them or buy them, but either way they are amazing. If the location looks crowded do not be turned off! The turnaround is usually very quick so even at peak time the wait is 10-15min max. The staff is very friendly and efficient which helps! Overall, this is my favorite breakfast taco place. Whoever as manager this morning went above and beyond. I hadn't received salsas in my last two door dash orders and he made sure to put extras in there. I only called and asked for one. The test of the menu is what sets it apart. I'm yet to have anything I didn't like from fish to steak to shrimp to pork belly . Great tacos. Queso is very good as well. Best breakfast taco in town - I always get the chorizo egg and cheese on whole wheat, I've tried others and they're all great, but I've come to terms with my addiction to this one. Soooooooo, if you've seen in my tips, I'm kind of a BIG fan of the Mojo fish taco at Taco Deli. The taco blends Texas Gulf Coast Drum fillets which are grilled with a mojo-garlic sauce & garnished with homemade guacamole and pico de gallo. The blend is an orgasmic burst of flavor in the mouth with each ingredient perfectly complimenting the other. At times I'll be disappointed in the portion size as I appreciate consistency but overall it is one of my favorite things to eat in Austin! On Thursdays, the daily special grilled scallops tacos are another BIG winner! The scallops are tossed with roasted red and poblano peppers, grilled corn and a garlic lime mojo sauce. The flavors again are great. I'm a spice guy so I highly recommend adding salsa Dona to both tacos! The salsa has a good kick, with a blend of jalapeno and garlic. Love it! I'd like to give Taco Deli more than 3-stars but outside of the two tacos I wrote about, I have found everything else I've tried there to be less than at the level of other taco joints in town BUT if you love a fish taco, I truly believe no one does it better than Taco Deli! One of my go-to places, the staff are great and the food comes out tasting right every time. I love the El Picosito and the smokiness of it you can really taste the flavor of the cut of meat. Supporting local farms is also great considering most farm to table restaurants aren't as affordable as Tacodeli. Lamar location) is EXTREMELY salty... like, I couldn't finish my second taco. Went here this AM for breakfast tacos and cold brew coffee... GREAT tacos!! I got a make your own: scrambled eggs, jack cheese & pablano - onion Rojas. My husband got and everything one (?? - I forget what it's called) and a build your own eggs blacks beans and jack cheese. Coffee was good... I had it with their horchata which is vegan (the reason I got it as I am lactose intolerant) and super cinnamon-y. Wasn't such a fan of the super cinnamon-y taste, but it was still good. I was a fan of the Otto (the bacon is great) and I liked the size of the tacos but - flavorwise - I've gotten similar (if not better) tasting tacos at places back on the east coast. My favorite place in the world for tacos, and the place I probably brag on the most when I hear friends are visiting Austin (best tacos in America lists, etc etc). ANYONE WHOS NOT FROM AUSTIN don't come to this place expecting un authentic taco. My friend and I are just working in Austin, we're not locals or anything and just wanted to eat a normal taco. We were misled by their good reviews and stars. The tortilla takes like paper, the salsa is weak, I've had diarrhea & stomach pains all day because of this place.
