Went to Tacombi on East 70th with a friend after visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art around 8:30pm. We walked right in without a reservation and were seated in the back. Tacombi is my favorite Mexican chain in NYC, and it is consistently good, flavorful, fresh, and paired with attentive service. My friend moved to NYC from California and has been hesitant to try Mexican food in NYC, but Tacombi won her over! We shared the guacamole, I had the agua sandía, she ordered the grilled fish tacos and barbacoa tacos, and I got the fried fish tacos and beef birria. Went for lunch and chose the watermelon agua Fresca which was so refreshing and the lunch combo with crispy fish and al pastor tacos which came with a bowl of rice and beans with a few chips. It hit the spot! We had to wait a person before ordering our meal but the server was patient and friendly. The setting was roomy so we didn't feel overcrowded. Lighting from the skylight was nice. I'm genuinely confused as to why these guys are so popular and why there's so many locations in the city. These are quite literally the most mid tacos I've ever had. The Al pastor was okay. The chicken tinga was drier than sawdust. And the carnitas was the only one that was decent. And it's not like the service was fast either. We ordered Topo Chico and instead of telling us they don't have that, they just served another generic seltzer to us. And when I asked about it, the waiter said we don't have Topo Chico anymore. Maybe tell us that when we ordered instead of just substituting? At $5 a taco, I can think of a dozen better spots to be at. I definitely do not recommend. read more

This is an update to my previous Tacombi review. My last one was based on delivery, this time I ate at the Upper East Side location. Their new carnitas taco was a nice surprise, I didn't expect to enjoy it so much. It was tender, not overly salty or aggressively seasoned, yet very tasty with a good amount of juiciness to it. They served it with a citrusy habanero salsa that was really good, and it came with a piece of crunchy chicharron that was the perfect touch. I'll definitely be back for more. For the al pastor, I could tell from my seat (and I was pretty far from the grill area) that the trompo looked dry. I still ordered it anyway because I always get al pastor wherever I go, and unfortunately it was disappointing. In my last review I complained that the delivery order was drenched in oil, this time they went the opposite direction. You can see from the pictures that this taco was pretty dry. 2 strikes on the al pastor here. Next time I'll have to trust my eyes and only order if the trompo looks good. The crispy fish taco is always a hit for me and I order it every time. I do think they add a bit too much straight mayo flavor, it could use more lime or something to cut it, but that's just my preference. Service was fairly quick and friendly around 3pm on a weekday. Vibe is ok. Huge space, high ceilings give the feel of almost being outside on a side street, which is cool. I see what they're going for but it feels kind of bare for the people who care about aesthetics, there's not much here. Overall, Tacombi feels more like a very casual, convenient taco spot for lunch or after work than somewhere I'd go out to for dinner, but it's definitely got my attention with the new carnitas taco. Loved the vibes at this place! Looked like a warehouse turned restaurant so it gave it more of a retro feel. The coat stands looked like cacti, it was so cute! Came on a Tuesday for lunch when I was in the area and was very pleasantly surprised they had buy one taco get one free for taco Tuesday! The guac was quite chunky and I wished it had more lemon and onions, but still tasty. The chips were nice and crunchy. The tacos themselves were good but a bit on the dry side. Really great place and reasonable prices! I wasn't super impressed with the crispy chicken tinga taco- it ended up being pretty dry unfortunately, but everything else was delish. Highly recommend the shrimp taco and the birria taco. My friend was also raving about their avocado tostada. The churros themselves were decent, but I definitely liked the chocolate that came with them, it tasted dark and rich and not overly sweet. The potions are SMALL.. like microscopic. This is not what I'm used to dining in a Mexican spot. We were still hungry after our main that we had to order more food. It supposed to be ribeye from La Freida with green salsa and charred onions and jalapeños. No taste to these at all. These should be double wrapped. They fall apart too easily. Last was best. The avocado tostado for $7. Guac, pickled red onion, cojita, and black beans. Fantastic. So three tacos $22. Side of large guac and cups came to $40. Great guac the chips were a little too hard. These weren't the best tacos I've had. Much prefer Los Tacos No 1 and even La Esquina. This is certainly better than Taco Bell but in a city this big with so many trucks and stands. The food is ok. I do really like the vegan burrito, and the guac is the best I can find on the upper east side. Everything else sort of tastes the same. I can get the Al Pastor burrito or the Carne Asada burrito, and there is almost no difference to the taste. The burritos are over-stuffed with slaw or rice or cheese, so the amount of meat that actually goes into them makes it so it's not really worth the price. In general, I just want the food to be less sterile. Since there is so little meat including in each dish, and the meat is the main item in each dish which has flavor added to it in the form of a sauce or marinade, everything is very very mild. I want more personality from Mexican food. More spice, more zing, more fat, more unctuous and thickened sauces, more variety in salsas, more seasoning in general, more everything that gives Mexican food its personality. The portions are small, and come with no sides, so I usually have to order two meals to feel full. This makes the price add up. The service is good when you are ordering the food. But when you want to pay for the food and leave with your two screaming kids, it's almost impossible to get the waitstaff to come back to your table. All in all, the atmosphere is ok, and the food is edible. 5/10. read more

Tacombi's UES location was not the best. For the positives, the building goes well with their open floor plan, very spacious with lots of natural light. And service was solid. They have a nice selection of drinks, and I appreciate their straightforward menu. However, in terms of execution, both of our mains were pretty oily and heavy, drowning out the taste to a certain extent. There was grease pooling all over my plate, it wasn't great. I was underwhelmed with my quesadilla. Aside from meat being bland and chewy, they served an "open" tortilla. Who does that? Quesadillas should have lots of melty cheese between two tortillas, so I really wasn't too thrilled with this dish. The price is right, dishes and drinks here are relatively affordable. But I can't see myself coming back unless I'm in a bind. There are definitely better Mexican options, in my opinion. read more

I've been to the UWS location a few times and I don't remember it being nearly as good as it was today. Since it's taco Tuesday the tacos were buy 1 get one free. Definitely a great deal! The tacos are about $5-$7. I had the birria, crispy fish, shrimp (given to us accidentally), and chicken. The birria and fish were my favorite. Chicken was least favorite; it was the blandest. The birria was a bit spicy but also good enough without dipping in the broth. The shrimp taco came with a spicy green sauce on the side. I pretty much ate the taco without it. I liked the layer of cheese. Their agua frescas are $5. Normally I would get a Horchata but I couldn't resist the watermelon, more refreshing on a humid day. read more

Let me start by saying I ordered this through UberEats, and it took almost 45 minutes to arrive. I imagine the food might be much better when served fresh. Also, as a Texan girlie, my standards for Mexican food are pretty high. With such high reviews, I decided to try a variety of items: the elote, avocado toast, birria taco, and Baja fish taco. The highlight of the meal was definitely the elote--it was packed with flavor, and I'd recommend it. The Baja fish taco was decent, but I think it would have been much better fresh. Unfortunately, the other items didn't live up to the hype and I didn't even finish them. The avocado toast and birria taco were disappointing; I didn't enjoy the flavors, and the birria felt overly heavy in a way that didn't sit well. Overall, I was a bit let down given the high reviews. Being in the mood for tacos, read the very cute story about how they started the business in the Yucatan peninsula, ordered tacos from Tacombi and very happy with the decision to try the restaurant, definitely among the best tacos I've had. I love tacos, as do a lot of others, I have had tacos on many trips to Mexico, from Chicago which is a haven for Mexican food and lots of tacos in Southern California. The food survived the trip from the restaurant really well. The crispy fish tacos with a generous sized piece of battered cod were delicious. The pork tacos were very good, with layers of flavor from the chiles and spices. The burrita which is a flour tortilla wrapped around shaved ribeye, french fries and refried beans could have been better if they were a little more generous with the meat, the french fries overwhelmed any flavor from the salsa and peppers. A fun taco joint on the UES -- they have a BOGO Taco Tuesday deal, would recommend coming in for that to get the best value. It's a big, airy space and the wait for ~20-30 min for a party of 3. I appreciate that they had a range of vegetarian and pescatarian options, with my favorite being the Sinaloa Shrimp tacos. The Corn Esquites were good, but probably would split them with someone else next time. The Horchata wasn't anything super special, would probably skip next time. It's an okay spot overall but a warning to anyone going to try the taco special from El Califa De Leon: they run out of the house made salsas REGULARLY and won't mention that... so you'll have your dry slab steak or chicken tacos with... lime. I don't blame the staff but come on, my husband and I were just like...this is kind of crap. We would have brought our own salsa or just come back another day. As someone who lived in Los Angeles for 6 years, it's difficult to find a Mexican restaurant in New York city that is on par with the delicious Mexican food from LA. In the two years I've lived in Manhattan, only two Mexican restaurants have met my expectations, and Tacombi is one of them. I love Tacombi because it perfectly captures the tastes of Mexican street tacos. It's nothing nothing pretentious, which makes it so good. I ordered the carne asada tacos, and its delicious taste comes from its simplicity: good, seasoned meat, great corn tortilla, a lime, adding in the green sauce, and it was great. I also ordered a fish taco, and as someone who normally doesn't like fish, this one blew me away. Crispy batter with that delicious crema -- thinking about it makes my mouth water! I also enjoyed Tacombi's playful, casual vibe. The inside is so cute, the music is upbeat, and it's so easy to just pop in and dine -- no reservations needed. However, Tacombi could improve its service. It was so slow that even getting your server's attention for water was difficult. You really had to look out and try to catch their eye to get anything. Tacombi started off as a food stall in Quintana Roo, but today, it brings together the cooking traditions from various regions across Mexico, including Baja California, Sinaloa, Jalisco, Oaxaca, Chihuahua, and the Yucatan. The Sinaloa shrimp tacos are my current favorite, followed by the Pollo Yucateco, a slight variation of the much-loved pollo pibil from the Yucatan peninsula. The burrita and platos are not on the menu anymore, but they graciously prepare them for you if you so request. The pescado frito (Baja-style crispy fish) burrita is fantastic! The high ceiling and warehouse-like interior at this location makes the acoustics a little loud, especially when the restaurant is busy. read more

This was my first time at Tacombi and I really liked it! Ordered: Guacamole and chips ($15)- it was a nice sized portion but not the best I've had. Could have been a little more flavorful. Still good! I think you can buy these chips at Whole Foods. They are good. Corn esquites ($5)- I really liked this and would recommend. The corn comes in a cup off the cob and you mix the seasoned crema and squeeze the lime. Had good flavor. La bisteca burrito ($14)- the burrito was very good but was on the small side and didn't come with chips or anything on the side like some other places. Baja crispy fish taco ($7)- by far the best thing I ordered! I highly recommend this taco. It has a creamy sauce plus the crunch of the fish and cabbage. I could have eaten five of these. read more
