I would have loved to give a 5 stars review but unfortunately a bad experience took over for the years I have been going to the restaurant. It's a spring/summer spot for me and my husband. Great food and drinks. But it seems that there's a new owner and quantity and quality has over taken over. Good portions are like kids meals. Drinks are full of ice not matter how many time we told the server to put less ice, the sever just changed the cup size with lot of ice. Now the server... don't know her name. She wasn't nice or welcoming, not pleasant and rude. I took my girlfriends to celebrate acknowledge a birthday and I regretted it. So disappointed. All the food tasted good, the portions were ridiculous small and the server every time she will bring the plates was like "take that cup out, the cellphone. Your hands out..." so rude. She never smiled or when asked for suggestions she just shrugged. The ambiance is quite not a loud music so to have a nice conversation. The sever literally kicked us 40 mns before closed time. She brought the check and came to tell us that the "caja" was closing and we needed to pay. We ordered another drink instead. And she made that drink so strong that we had to put water on it. My friends in the neighborhood like to come here. It's a small space with small tables. We came for Saturday brunch. There's a special for $22 to pick a plate and drink. I ordered delivery and they charged me $18 instead of $17 (I had to call and she said she couldnt reverse it sorry). When I order online margaritas are always made incorrectly - they dont read the notes, I guess they dont feel they need to care. I was there this weekend and the daughter overcharged $1 our margaritas, when I have never been charged more. Its $15 and she charged $16. I cant even believe Im writing these prices. I wanted to like this little hole-in-the-wall, but, gosh, it was awful... The bartender/waiter tried to do a good job, but the food is the worst. It isn't even the sort of "good-old-bad" Mexican food that we all crave once in a while, especially after a night of drinking and/or smoking. Nope, not that good. These ingredients, especially the cheap cheese, are inferior, and the chips are greasy in an undesirable way. And, to boot, it is all bland and tasteless. However, "Sabor a Mexico" (such a nerve to name it that!) is not American-Mexican, it's not TexMex or New Mex, and it's not "good ol' bad" Mexican. I have never been treated as poorly as we were when we ordered from them Friday night. 10 minutes after the app said that the restaurant said the food was on the way and should have been delivered, we called the restaurant. They could not tell me when the food was coming (an hour after I ordered), 10 minutes? 20 minutes? Oh not till the food comes, until they get to cooking the order. So another hour? No apologies. No thoughts of maybe cooking it next. They told me they were cancelling the order. They wouldn't answer when I asked about getting my money back. They hung up on me. When I called back they picked up the phone and wouldn't speak to me! They never cancelled the order or refunded my money, we had to contact the app to do so. We had a terrible experience at Sabor a México II. After an average dinner we found ourselves facing a ridiculously high check, only to find out it was mostly due to the fact that they were charging $22 for tequila shots that in any other restaurant in New York would cost no more than $10. They offer only a limited selection on drink prices on the menu, the rest is in a special sheet of paper that the waiter took out of his pocket when we complained about the check. I usually don't write reviews but this one I had to write to warn other potential clients: If you are coming, don't be fooled by the low cost, average look...make sure you know all prices before you order anything here. Beware if you're a minority. Considering this place is owned by minorities, you'll face judgement and feel the racism. We were in a group of 3 and we got sat in the corner of the restaurant. One of the seats were all the way by the wall so you had to go over one chair to get to the other. Second, we weren't even given a menu. They gave us ONE to go menu. A white couple came in after us and they were immediately greeted and given a dine in menu. It was by our facial expressions that they realized they probably should give us a dine in menu :). It only took them 5 minutes to give it to us. The host came to us and told us we had to order an appetizer and an entree because it was Cinco de Mayo which was BS. They didn't tell white couple who came in after us about this. Then later the host came back and said she made a "mistake." Third, my friend ordered nachos with queso. They brought out a plate of chips with some melted Kraft cheese on top. This clearly wasn't what she asked for and we overheard them talking in Spanish about the order. When they realized we heard them they tried clarifying saying that "In this restaurant we do it differently yadda yadda yadda." Luckily they didn't charge my friend for that abomination. Then, when we were going to pay, they failed to mention that there's a $10-15 minimum on card. When I was paying, I emphasized that I wanted to pay using credit, but it kept asking me for a pin. The woman was rude about it, not being understanding saying "well I don't know what you want me to do.", not offering another solution. Lord this place is GOOD. I love a crispy taco and I know they aren't always the easiest to find. The lunch special is $14 for just two tacos. A bit pricy. I will admit. But absolutely worth the splurge every once in a while. I got the traditional ground beef this go around and while the beef is nothing special, the shell is perfection. The Birria is also very good. But I did order to-go once and the consume wasn't included. Maybe make sure you ask for it. Because without it, it kisses the mark a bit. Also ask for their spicier sauces, then pour the included delicious pico, grab a fork to scoop up the spillings. My friend and I stumbled upon this place on our way to another restaurant. It looked cozy and cute, so we decided to try Sabor instead. We were pretty happy that we did. The place is pretty small, and doesn't seem like it can seat more than a couple of parties of people. The lighting is very intimate, and the people who work here are super friendly. I'm not sure if this place has several locations or not, or if it is a unique restaurant, but it definitely had that small, home-cooked mexican food, vibe. I ordered the pork tacos, and they were delicious. The meat was a bit rough, but overall, I didn't have many complaints. When you order tacos, they cannot be different ones, so you can only choose one kind. This, I was a bit disappointed in. However, the tacos turned out great! They also came with rice and beans which are, as always, quite delicious. There seems to be a lot of drink specials, but we did not drink that night. Really great vibe with reggae music and a dia de los muertos decor. Food is overpriced (-1 star) but very tasty and pretty authentic. Service is overall good with the waitress checking in and seeing how everything was. I also had an issue with my order and while I got slight attitude when I pointed it out, they corrected it and re-made the meal quickly. I will definitely be back based on the convenience of location, tastiness of the food and fantastic vibe. If you're looking for a more lowkey place where you can have a marg and chill, go here. If you're looking for a swanky mexican place, I would try calexico... but they are also overpriced, have sterile decor and long waits... so I would pass and go here instead. read more

This little place has been on my radar and I finally got a chance to check it out. The outside looks cute and festive and I was ready for a good time! The outside does not match the inside because while cute it is super relaxed. Like sleepy music soft talking super relaxed. I was hoping to catch Happy Hour but it's only from 3-6 (I mean who is even out of work during that time. How about 5-7) but by the time we got there it was over. We had regular priced drinks and the margaritas start at $12 and go up from there. While the drink I had was good it was not $14 good because it had house tequila and little of it. The beers were good! The food is PRICEY. I don't understand because it wants to be a hole in the wall family spot but then charges $15 per taco order. I mean only the really fancy spots charge $5 a taco and they let you mix and match. Not here. It's $15 for three and they all have to be the same kind. That seems very much like a chain restaurant. The whole thing came out to $110 (guacamole, two orders of tacos, tamal, and two rounds of drinks). It's pricier than what the vibe gives off. Decided to order from here since my go to, Dos Toros, wasn't available for some odd reason on Seamless. Ordered 2 burritos (carnitas and chicken) and an order of the steak tacos. DELIVERY: Now, I'm only 7 blocks away from the restaurant, yet they took 55 mins to deliver my food. The window of time was supposed to be 30-45 mins. I was so hungry by the time the food came that I just didn't care anymore. FOOD: The tacos were tasty...worth 8 bucks? Definitely not. The burritos were meh. You would think that they'd label the containers so that I wouldn't have to unwrap both burritos, searching to figure out which was which. Careless and lazy move on their part. The lettuce that came with the burrito in the container was already turning, so obviously not fresh. Nice little Upper East Side Mexican cantina in a nondescript basement cranny. Walked in on a rainy Sunday afternoon and there was no one but the owner flipping between Mexican soaps and the Giants game. Got the guacamole--solid! The tacos were good (Al Pastor and a spicy chicken) and the rice and beans were decent. The cafe con leche was amazing--creamy and nearly sweet without actually being sweet. I told her I liked Mezcel margaritas and she recommended another smoky tequila they had which was super. I asked what she recommended for an entree, what was a signature dish, and she spoke proudly of their mole sauce as being authentic and homemade as opposed to bought package... And offered to let me taste the sauce before ordering it . So sweet and attentive ! The food: Guacamole. I am a guac snob and this was fantastic . Freshly made, with big avocado chunks, just right. Just the right amount of spice, and when my friend wanted less than mild, she brought a side of chopped jalapeños. Chicken with mole sauce . Really wonderful. The sauce while different than what I've ever ordered was perfectly flavored, paired well and just the right amount of sauce with the tenderly cooked chicken pieces. Drinks - my Mezcel margarita and my friends sangrias were fabulous. If you're looking for a swanky, sexy, spacious south-of-the-border restaurant with bougie frozen cocktails and $20 bowls of "guacamole made table-side," then Sabor is not your jam. However, if its authentic, homemade Mexican food that you crave, then look no further. Upon moving uptown, I wasn't too familiar with the Mexican restaurant-landscape, save for Toloache, which isn't very affordable. I wanted to find my go-to spot; somewhere I could order delivery or casually swing by to dine-in without hesitation. Or a fully made-up face. Nothing too fancy, but also somewhere with waiter service. A tequila and mezcal selection wouldn't hurt, either. After scouring my local options and cross referencing them on numerous websites, I came upon "Sabor A Mexico II." Having seen a picture on Yelp of what appeared to be a house-made hard-shelled taco (shell) stuffed with meat and all the fixins (lettuce, shredded yellow cheese, pico de gallo) - coupled with the restaurant's crappy 3.5 star rating (What the hell do UES gringo's know, anyways?) - I knew that I needed to take an even closer look. The menu read like that of any authentic restaurante: Chilaquiles - Aguas Frescas - Tamales - Chile Rellenos, etc. It was even sprinkled with a few random items that weren't (authentic), such as Calamari and Chicken Wings. My first experience with Sabor was a delivery order, which arrived on time and was comprised of: Cheese enchiladas with red guajillo chile sauce - perfectly cooked and seasoned Mexican rice and refried pinto beans that weren't completely pulverized - a hard-shelled taco (the shell was definitely homemade, btw) generously filled with stewed, shredded chicken breast and topped with all the fixins - and tortilla chips. Everything was warm, intact, delicious, and as authentic of a meal as something I'd find in Texas or California. The only thing that I found odd was the addition of rice in my taco; since it was placed at the base, perhaps its purpose was to serve as a buffer between the chicken and the shell to avoid becoming a soggy mess? Still high on momentum from my deliciously successful delivery order, I asked my cousin if he'd like to grab lunch with me at the restaurant. Located just a few steps below street level, Sabor is easy to miss! Blink once, and you'll walk right on by. To the right of the front door is a teeny tiny patio housing a table for one very luck party; once inside, the intimate dining room is festively decorated in bright colors and adorned with Mexican relics. Based on my observation, the space can comfortably seat approximately twenty guests (give or take). Larry and I were seated immediately (12:30PM on a Sunday). There were three other patrons in the restaurant and we were all being waited upon by a friendly male server. We promptly ordered sodas and a basket of chips and salsa before placing our entree requests. While Larry opted for the hard-shell chicken tacos, I chose the chile relleno plate (a "chile relleno" is a poblano or Anaheim chile pepper stuffed with cheese, in this particular case, dipped in an egg batter and deep fried), which was accompanied by rice, beans, and tortillas. "Wow," he exclaimed with a full mouth, "these tacos are fantastic!" Larry later gushed that Sabor's were the best (tacos) he's had in NYC. And speaking of, my chile relleno was not only the most authentic and delectable that I've had in the tri-state region, it's one of the best that I've tasted, period. Texas and California included! Instead of being filled with a congealed, yellow cheddar, the poblano was stuffed with a white cheese that was akin to Chihuahua (cheese). Unlike Tex-Mex renditions that I've had in Dallas and Houston, the egg batter that encrusted the pepper was incredibly thin and light, not thick and fluffy/cakey. Crowned with a ladle of warm, garlicky tomato salsa, I finished every last bite - and rice kernel - on my plate. Returning to Sabor is all I've been able to think about for the past few days. With plans to visit again on Sunday with a girl friend, I look forward to sampling the restaurant's margaritas. read more
