My friends hesitated taking me here as a native Californian, but I am glad I made the stop at Tacorita! I got a Cruncharita which is a fantastic concept more taquerias should do! I asked for rice and beans inside but next time I would get it without as I wasn't a fan of the rice. I liked the carnitas but my husband didn't like the beef birria at all. Service was great - they bring the food to your table and there's a simple bussing station for when you're done. Plenty of seating! However, I was there within the past week and ordered two classic tacos, which came with the wrong type of shell, despite the person behind the counter asking me what my preference was. She got it mixed up or tossed my preference to the wind. The tacos were very small and six dollars each and I was still hungry after finishing the two disappointingly small tacos. Basic lunch for two people was $35. No way I was leaving a tip when the order was wrong and portions too small for the hefty, gouging price. Ambience is still good. Vibrant and clean. Person behind the counter could certainly put a smile on her face and have a little bit more interest in being helpful and making sure that the order gets put in and comes out correct. My husband I stopped in for the first time recently. Loved the atmosphere, and the staff was very nice. I ordered a shredded chicken burrito bowl, and hubby had the shrimp tacos. The food was very fresh. I really liked the seasoning on the shredded chicken, which was very juicy and tender. I always appreciate 'real' lettuce (spring mix) and not cheap, watery iceberg used by so many restaurants. The shrimp tacos were so good! I really liked the sauce. Wow. This is a fun and tasty addition to the downtown Orono area. You pick your style of entree (burrito, taco, chimichanga, etc.) and two condiments (guacamole, slaw, jalapeño ranch, queso, etc.). Where to start? Ok let's start with the chios and salsa, we ordered the salsa fresco and it tasted like nothing but unripe tomatoes and nothing else. Being disappointed we asked to exchange it for the house tacorita salsa which tasted like ketchup! This did not bode well for the entree, my fish tacos were nothing more than some kind of fish stick with some bland pineapple slawish gruel on raw corn tortillas. Side of black beans that tasted fresh out of the can, my poor partner who is a vegan ordered the veggie taco that had the same beans with some rice. Margaritas were premix with some cheap tequila. I'm originally from Texas. Good Tex-Mex isn't hard to come by there. When I moved to Bangor, finding a spot to hit that "spot" became a litter trickier. Found out about Tacorita in Orono through a friend, telling me to hit that spot up. Lemme tell you, their Carnitas will stand up to anything back home. Pleasantly surprised by how good the food was here, and how great the service was also. You can pretty much build your own plate there. I have not been disappointed yet. Super chill vibe there, not trying to be more than what it is. The beauty of Mexican food is depth of flavor, subtle spice, and ultra fresh ingredients. This had none. We ordered the fish taco, a Californian burrito, a shredded chicken burrito, shrimp quesadilla, street corn, flautas, and chicken strips. Nothing seemed fresh, the chicken and the fish were from frozen bags and both were bland and dry. Even the extra salsa we ordered was bland. This reminded us of what a college kid might eat after a night of slamming fireball shots. Not authentic in any way. Even the coleslaw appeared to be that pre shredded bagged stuff with a few pineapple chunks thrown in. Churros were dense...not sure if they were made fresh either. I was told by a loved one to restrain myself in this review so as to not adversely affect a local business. Hence my 2 star rating as opposed to what I would have rated it. It all comes down to the chili. They advertised a cup or bowl of delicious chili soup. So, being very hungry, I ordered the $6.50 bowl as opposed to the smaller 'cup' for $5. What I received you can see in the attached photo. I placed a pepper shaker next to it for size comparison, however I would have preferred to use a penny coin as that would be a more appropriate size comparison. This bowl of painfully 'average' tasting chili, no better than any you could find on the shelf at your local IGA, was so so so small, that I thought the server had mistakenly given us the cup size instead of the bowl. But he assured me this was the bowl. News Flash, this is NOT an effing bowl! It is barely more than appetizer size. I expressed my incredulity to the server, to which he said 'sorry'. Sorry is not good enough buddy. I am soured on Tacoritas. I almost feel like I should put them in touch with the International Weights and Measures institute in Stockholm so they can be assisted in choosing an actual effing bowl size.
