There are quite a few of Mexican restaurants in Longmont. I rated Tacos Don Jose average, there are better and there are also not as good Mexican restaurants in the same town. Recently I tried their barbacoa and carnitas plate. Both tasted okay but not outstanding. The corn tortillas were a little chewy, may be because they were reheated in an microwave. One time the mashed pinto beans were very thick like a stiff paste. The green and red chili were good, perhaps I should have ordered smothered burrito instead. Their service also tends to be slow. One time I ordered take out, there were 4 parties in front of me in line and it took 20 minutes from getting in line to receiving my food. read more

We have been going here for a few years now. It's always delicious hot and ready. They speak English and Spanish not just Spanish. They're always friendly. You can order and pick up. I have searched and searched for a "legit" relleno; a roasted poblano pepper stuffed with mild white cheese and fried crispy in an egg batter. No wonton shells, no anaheim chiles, no cheddar cheese. Tacos Don Jose has exactly that, and it's perfect!!! I also tried the chicken sopa and an asada taco- yum!!! The sopa was piled high with wonderful things like avocado and crisp lettuce, while the taco was simply topped with onion, cilantro, and a squeeze of lime- exactly like you'd find in Mexico. SO SO SO GOOD! It's making me drool just thinking about it! My husband had the smothered burrito and a taco al pastor and both of those were excellent as well. We were the only gringos in there, but we had our 7 month old daughter with us who likes to make lots of friends and everyone was happy to return her smile and wave. Service was excellent, particularly for a place where you order at the counter. Definitely worth a stop! read more

The green chili saga continues! And possibly ends. The company I now work for has an office in Longmont, so on a day I was there they took me to Don Jose for lunch, and my world was completely ROCKED! Of course, as I do at any Mexican restaurant, I ordered green chili. Thick chunks of pork that completely melted in your mouth and a broth with the perfect amount of spice without being overwhelming. I came back to Denver raving and demanding we make the trip to Longmont so my husband can try it himself. A must if you're in Longmont, and honestly worth the drive if you're not! read more

When I order something and I say "no avocado because of a very bad allergy" I need you to listen! I just got breakfast burritos here, I said no avocado because of my allergy and the woman who took my order said back no avocados that's what it should be. Upon giving my my food I was told breakfast burritos WITH avocado.... clearly didn't get what I was saying.... after speaking with their boss I was given two options: A. They take out the avocado which doesn't help me because it's already touched all my food or B. Pay for new burritos.... those are not good options!!!!! Seriously need to work on customer service..... $1.75 street tacos - SCORE!!!! Howdy y'all. I stopped in here while I was up in LMO - based on Yelpers reviews. This place is tucked away next to Murdoc's, so it's not hard to find. It's relatively clean and the crew seems nice. For food, I'd say this is a good place for tacos and other non platter meals. The prices jump a ton for platters. The food is good, but not worth $10 for one chili relleno with rice and beans. I will definitely go back for tacos... Cheers y'all. read more

Their salsas are fantastic and I can't keep my hands off their carne asada tacos or, honestly, their tamales (although sometimes they come out heavy on mealy side). Review regarding breakfast burrito only: this is a solid three star breakfast burrito. I am happy this place exists because the burrito definitely does the job, just too bland and dry for my taste. Caveat: I will edit this review when chorizo is available. It wasn't at the time of my review. I tried the egg and potato, as well as egg/potato/bacon. I prefer some sauce inside the burrito. Other locations offer hot, medium or mild chili inside the burrito which adds the necessary flavor and moisture that makes a breakfast burrito special. This place offers red or green salsa on the side, but it's bland as well. They could also consider finishing off the outside of the burrito by pressing in a panini grill as other shops do, to add to texture and flavor to the tortilla. The shop itself is very clean and the staff were welcoming and efficient. I'll return when I'm doing business in the north side of Longmont and check out the chorizo. I used to live in Longmont and was a religious consumer of Taco Don Jose's Carne Asada Tacos. Then I moved to Fort Collins and anytime I went to Longmont for something you bet, I stopped in for at least 10 carne asada tacos. Shortly after Fort Collins I made my way to Denver and every time I need to go to Boulder I go to Longmont for those same $1.79/each tacos. Every single time! Another great little Mexican joint in Longmont! Thus far, we've only come here for takeout -- it is a place where you order at the counter and then sit down. Once again I found another great Mexican restaurant to keep tabs on and keep the economy going by going there to eat. There are lots of choices as to what you can get to eat. There are burritos, tostadas (not the little ones mind you but ones that make up a whole meal), tortas and more. I went with the torta and I have to say that it was indeed most tasty. I can't wait to have another one from here. They also had some flan which looked homemade and looked delicious but I did not want that much to eat right then so another day then. What I had instead for my sweet tooth was some Mexican candy that they had for sale here. There were lots of different kinds but I settled on a milk candy with pecans on top. Very yummy! Let's start at the beginning... the best house salsa I have ever eaten. My band came through Denver, and generally we try to hit local places to make up for the truck stop fare with which we're often stuck. After scouring Yelp we decided that Don Jose's looked like a good possibility, and oh lord was it. Back to what I was saying, when I placed my order at the counter I asked for chips and salsa, not sure whether they were complimentary or an additional charge. There was no charge, but after basically cleaning the bowl I would gladly have payed. I'm not even sure what was in the salsa, because it was yellowish in colour, but I do know that it was chock full of chunks, yes chunks of avocado, and heaps of cilantro. So delicious. Beyond this amazing salsa, the street tacos were also really satisfying, and about $1.25 a pop. Also, if you enjoy horchata, Taco's Don Jose has their recipe down. Our singer had never had it, and I had been holding off telling him to try it, because a bad horchata experience can really sour you to the whole concept. Needless to say, the horchata at Tacos's Don Jose was a great jump off for a life time of horchata consumption. Overall a very satisfying meal, filing but not to the point of feeling stuffed, and 24 hours later I feel just as satisfied about my choice (which we all know can be a consideration w/Mexican cuisine). Here it is people, real Mexican food! Tacos Don Jose is right down the road from the more traditional Colorado style Mexican food chain so many of us have come to accept as palatable but this unassuming little restaurant serves up so much good I can't see why you would pass it up. I came to Tacos Don Jose with a coworker from Minnesota who I could tell was a bit concerned with the decor and lack of usual corny Mexican restaurant paraphernalia but his trepidation was overcome by a truly excellent looking carnitas platter. I being the on the perpetual lookout for a California style burrito ordered the super smothered lengua burrito because it came with beans inside. I didn't get to taste the carnitas (because hello that would have been awkward to ask my boss for some) but the burrito was very good. Service was snappy and as the place filled up food was coming out at a good pace so perhaps they have fixed any problems people experienced before. I highly recommend some Tacos Don Jose if you are in the area. read more

Eh gad, Very petite mediocre tacos! The barbacoa & carnitas are ok, but nothing to write home about. My biggest complaint was the smell of the tortillas, they literally made your hands smell like they weren't washed after a long visit to the WC! Also they seemed to give us 2 pints of a foul tasting liquid when we requested a large guacamole, it had tiny chunks of avocado in what seemed to be a golden colored habanero broth, it was more of a soup. This is not what you would find in Mexico and yes I know I lived in Mérida for a while. Longmont seems to set the benchmark for lackluster cusine. read more

This place is cheap, tasty and filling. You can identify the ingredients as as actual food, too, which is thrilling. My husband is bonkers for the tamales, which you can order hot to eat right away or cold to save for later. The tacos are just meat, cilantro and onion on two small corn tortillas. They are super simple but really flavorful. The smothered burrito and sopas are both delicious. The quesadillas are not what you would get at a regular Tex-Mex place, but still really tasty. I am eager to try more stuff from this place. As an added bonus, you can get Mexican sodas, which are made with real sugar instead of high-fructose corn syrup. Yum! There are tables where you can stay and eat, but we mostly get takeout. The staff is friendly and the place is clean, but he building is nothing fancy. Lately they've done some updating. It's still a little hole-in-the-wall, but it has some new signs on the outside that make it more appealing from the street. I have spent years exploring dives and chains looking for great Mexican food. This is great Mexican Food. When I discovered this place, I was working in construction. My coworker and I were picking up some essintials at a local hardware store when there was a mass exsadus of both hardware store employees and customers. They all begain gathering around a van parked between some stalls of lumber. It was Tacos Don Jose mobile van. I bought a chile relleno breakfast burrito. It was fantastic! I later visited the location in Longmont and was blown away with how authentic and tasty all the food was. I don't make it up to Longmont very often anymore and I live 45 minutes away, but have driven that distance just to eat here (which is a little crazy I know). read more

After living in Dallas I'd despaired of finding authentic tacos in the area until I came across Don Jose. It's right next to a Game Force on Main and there are trees everywhere so it's easy to miss. Let's get to the tacos: served on two heated homemade corn tortillas, the lengua melts in your mouth, the pastor is seasoned perfectly with that tiny amount of sweetness, the asada is spot-on. There are two squeeze bottles of sauce: the tomatillo in the mustard bottle is pretty good, but the red sauce in the ketchup bottle is the best. The perfect quick lunch to knock back with a cold cup of horchata. They have other stuff too -- my wife murdered the smothered burrito - green chili is something you CAN'T find in TX! I had 3 different tacos - they were small but tasty and actually quite filling. My favorite was the carnitas and my least favorite was the asada which was dry as others have noted. The ingredients were fresh and identifiable.
