The first time I ate their food it was brought to me... and it was the best barbacoa taco I've ever had. But then I went there on my own and it was a horror show. To say the place was filthy would have been an understatement, and I never went back. I heard there was new ownership, so I thought I'd give it another go. I'm happy to say that the new operators have cleaned up the place and even though it has the same basic layout as before, they've at least painted and are making an effort to keep the place clean and presentable - which is important when your customers are ordering food literally six feet away from your grill. When I arrived there was a kid sitting to my right in front of the cash register and a lady working in the back. I made eye contact with the kid, but he didn't say anything or acknowledge my presence, so it seemed like maybe he was just hanging out for some reason. I stood there for three minutes being ignored by the lady in back, when the kid mumbles, "Are you ready?" OH! You're working! Got it... I order a vegetarian burrito (Beans, Rice, Cheese, Lettuce, Pico, Avocado) minus the cheese. The kid writes down the order, then steps behind the counter to make my burrito. During the course of making my burrito, he has to come out twice to look on the menu board to see what was in a veggie burrito. The lady in back is continuing prep, making salsa. She has a blender full of red salsa almost completed, and she takes a rubber spatula out of the salsa and touches her palm with it and then licks her palm to check the flavor. Gonna make a wild guess that this isn't part of the "approved" tasting process as described in the Oregon Food Handler's prep course. The kid presents me with my burrito in a small bag, complete with a napkin and one each of red and green salsa. He takes my $10, I leave a $3 tip and I'm on my way. While the tortilla he made the burrito with was huge, the burrito itself is small and light. When I drove home (5 minutes) and dug into the burrito, it was just barely warm. The flavor was decent. I should mention that I never saw him wash his hands prior to making my burrito or after taking my cash. I don't want to make assumptions here, but.... It pains me to beat up on a local place like Tacos El Comal. I really want them to be good. I want to know that they're following basic health codes and serving their food with pride and integrity... but it's clear they're not. It would be so simple to "fix" this place with just a little bit of proper food handlers training, but honestly I'm not sure it's safe to eat here at this point. read more

This is a little location within a gas station. The food is great, and the business is worth a visit if you have time to wait. Seems to be a small family business. We had quite a wait for a couple of veggie burritos (they were delicious). While waiting we talked with lots of local folks so it was time well spent. There is a sign that notes that they make the food as quickly as possible so I'm guessing that there have been complaints. Bottom line: the food is really good, the folks who work there are nice, prices are reasonable, and Sisters Oregon is a beautiful place. read more

I love hole in the wall restaurants, so this seemed to be a fitting selection. The wait was a nonissue and it allowed for observation. I took in the operations of the cooking area, which were a bit concerning and overlooked. I ordered a chicken burrito, which was mainly refried beans with a few items that appeared to be meat. The flavor was incredibly bland and the food ultimately very disappointing. Spend your time at another local joint that will be much more satisfying. read more

We stopped here because a co hiker in our car heard this place was good. We all were hungry, and though I was a little skeptical, we went with it. There were 4 of us on the car, and nobody in line ahead of us. It did take awhile, but it was worth it. The guy was nice and looked like he worked hard. Cheap good Mexican food!! I couldn't finish it in fact. It took awhile though, so you have to be patient. Be hungry if you go here!! We all were pretty happy with what we got! BEST BREAKFAST BURRITOS OF ALL TIME! They are HUGE...can easily be shared! $7.50 each and so worth it! A giant tortilla filled with potato, egg, cheese and your choice of bacon, chorizo or sausage. They can also do no meat. Highly recommend getting two sides of the red salsa per burrito...adds a ton of flavor! Don't let the location fool you! Yes, it's in a gas station mini mart, but who cares?! Everything is made hot in front of you while you wait...NOT FAST FOOD...so you must be patient! It's one guy making it all. Very unexpected! While ordering it was a little difficult over the phone and pulling up to the gas station made me a little nervous. All doubt when away when the sweetest older gentleman was at the counter with our order ready to go! This place is inside a gas station, and reminds me of Nico's in Arizona, but much smaller. The person manning the desk was nice. My husband ordered a carne asada burro which was large and about 7.25. Turned out to be filled with tons of rice that was nothing great, stale beans and a few pieces of gristle meat. A rip off and not even what a carne asada burro should be. I asked if something came with guacamole & was told they were out of it, but that they had avocado. This either means they use a store bought kind and were out, or they were too lazy to mix together another batch for their customers so early in the day, about 1 pm. Wait a little bit and head over to Tacos Pihuamo on Columbus in Bend, it's a taqueria cart, their prices are cheaper and you get delicious and authentic, not old food. read more

After 10 years in California we learned many times the best Mexican food places are the little holes in the wall in a market or a store. So when I heard several times the best Mexican food in Sisters was Tacos El Comal inside of Space Age I started getting very excited I might have found my new lunch spot. I finally had the chance to try it today. I ordered the Oregon Burrito, carne casada, papas, and red sauce (it sounded good) the meat was kind of gristly, the cheese was hot and melty, and the onions and peppers were grilled to near-perfection and as far as burritos go it wasn't bad. There was one thing that was a little strange however- at one point the girl making my burrito went to the back room at the other side of the store and came back with a metal prep tray. As she dumped it on the griddle I saw what was in the tray- French fries! Now I get it. Sometimes places run out of ingredients. The potatoes are going to run out. But substituting with French fries seems a little... lazy. Potatoes are cheap and the super market is practically next door. Not bad, but my burrito tasted like carne asada and French fries. Again, this wasn't really a deal-breaker (ladies) and I will definitely give it another chance or two but I will keep my expectations reasonable as should you. read more
