I'd give Tacos El Rey 3 stars. The food can be really good, but it's a bit hit or miss depending on how busy they are. The service isn't the best and can feel inconsistent at times. On the positive side, the salsa is really good, the portions are fair, and the prices are reasonable for what you get. Overall, it's decent if you catch them on a good day. read more

Visiting the area for work and found this little gem of a place. It doesn't look like much from the outside but don't be fooled. Their food is great. Very good service and fresh, great tasking food. I first became a Tacos El Rey fan by frequenting on of their Taco Trucks, and then later, my son introduced me to their sit-down location on Garrity. Well, I have been here several times and I have never been disappointed. Tonight I ordered three fish tacos, and a chicken tamal. Everything I ordered was delicious. The tacos here are pretty much amazing, owing much to the fact that the tortillas are freshly made. I never could believe that simple tortillas could taste this good. Then, they have this chopped fish meat that appears to be pan fried, along with some lettuce, cabbage, and tomatoes on top. The real kicker is this orange "Magic" sauce that is someplace between delicious and amazing on the taste scale. The result was that all these tastes come together in a very very satisfying way. The tamal was great too, and I smothered it in salsa and one of their delicious home made sauces. For dessert, my wife offered me a taste of her chile relleno. It was cooked perfectly, and covered with a red sauce (maybe an enchilada sauce) and onions. All I could say was, "Wow". It was zesty, with a zing of spice, and full of chile flavor. Awesome, Awesome, Awesome. The prices here are super affordable, and the staff is super friendly. I can't think of anything about this place that I don't like. It just feels like an awesome family restaurant, and the food is always so, so good! As we left the restaurant tonight, my wife asked a simple question that kind of summarizes our experience... Just stopped here for lunch. I got the massive Manny's burrito with barbacoa. It's filled with rice, beans & meat. It is then smothered in salsa and lettuce with a scoup each of quacamole & sour scream. After munching on chips, refried beans and salsa I'm stuffed with a nice snack for later. The best street tacos in the valley! I love this place and am so glad that they have a sit down restaurant. We arrived and were seated immediately. It wasn't busy this visit, but that's not aways the case. I always order the carnitas tacos and the abadabo marinated pork tacos... soo good! What makes this place and their taco trucks stand out is that they make their own tortillas. No package tortilla at this place! Today I ordered two abadabo marinated pork tacos and one Chile Relleno. I can now say they have the best Chili Relleno I have ever had!!!! My husband, who's not a fan of Chili Relleno, took a bite of mine and he's won over for the love of a Chili Relleno! Amazing! You know it's authentic when you are the only Gringos in the place! I had come here a year ago with a friend and really enjoyed it, so decided to come back with a friend and his family after church today. The food was just as good and the wait staff just as friendly as the first time. Between us we ordered chicken fajitas, pollo en mole, carne asada, chicken nuggets for the little ones, and my friend Boyd had the most unique thing on the menu - a whole fried fish - which by the time he was done with it looked like it had been attacked by a school of miniature piranhas. The food here did not disappoint. Some of the best authentic Mexican food in the valley. I ordered a few carne asada tacos along with some of their salsa verde and salsa roja and not only was my order on point but also very satisfying. I didn't realize you could call in, make your order, and then come pick it up. I always assumed you had to be present to order. However, tonight I simply called to ask what time they closed on a Saturday night and they kindly advised me to place my order. I arrived in five minutes and my order was ready to go. I found this restaurant on Yelp and decided to give it a try while we were in town for a few days. I wish we would have had time to go back a second time. It was really yummy. My husband and I ordered tacos and our son ordered the fajitas. All the tacos were very good, our favorite was the el pastor. The fajitas were so yummy. Most places skimp on the beef but not here. Lots of steak and peppers. So fantastic. We also ordered guacamole and we loved it. I recommended Tacos El Rey to my local family members. And they're excited to try it. We didn't know this place existed until this past Saturday when friends we were at the lake with that day told us about it. We live on the complete opposite end of town, but thought we'd give it a try. My wife ordered a combination platter and I ordered the shrimp in sour cream sauce after we made the 15 minute drive to get there. Waited in the car and when our food was ready, I went in and paid for and picked up our order. The smell on the way home was heavenly and I was pretty sure we made the right choice. Got home and opened up our containers of food to find mine didn't look anything like shrimp in cream sauce. It was a red sauce with tomatoes and various other things, along with the rice and beans. While on the phone with the owner or manager letting him know what happened, I just picked up one of the shrimps to smell it. I'm not a fan of spice AT ALL. I made the mistake of just touching my finger to my tongue and it was almost instantly on fire. To me anyway, I'm a spicy wuss. While on the phone, I found the receipt and the manager also verified the kitchen made a mistake and he said they would remake my order. It was late at this point and they were 10 minutes from closing, but said they would remake the food and wait to close until I got there. So, I made the 10-15 minute drive back again and picked up my order. This time, the cook (I imagine) was out front and apologized for the error. I said, no problem, accidents happen. Went home again and proceeded to open the bag again. Guess after the first experience, I should have checked while I was there, but figured there was no way they would mess it up again. This is where the story gets interesting for me as a business owner and why I am only giving this restaurant a 3 star review. The food was excellent. My wife's taco was one of the best I've ever tasted. Score one for our friends recommendation. My shrimp and the sauce? Also excellent. We'll definitely go back sometime for the food. Now, why the 3 stars? Because, as a business owner, I would have really "made this right". How? By giving my customer an extra large portion of the main course, plus more of the rice and beans, chips and salsa AND I would have issued a refund for that one meal that was messed up. Not only because it was messed up, but because of it, it required another 25 minutes in travel time back and forth after the original trip. And he knew how far away I lived. They didn't do either. That was really disappointing and thus the reason for the 3 stars. I would normally have given 2 stars for something like this, but the food WAS really good. read more

One thing I always miss is a good old fashioned taqueria. I had tried the Tacos el Rey in Caldwell and I was impressed with their burrito. This time, I decided to try the Nampa location. Wow! Larger, more of a sit down location with a real menu and not just a board above the order window. Table service was excellent, the staff was really nice and attentive too. They have a lunch buffet which I didn't try but looked to be popular with the lunchtime crowd. I liked that they brought a nice basket of corn tortilla chips, a bowl of salsa and a bowl of refried beans for the chips too. I ordered an al pastor (marinated pork), a chorizo (Mexican sausage) and a chivo (goat) taco. I also ordered the side chile relleno.It was easy to tell everything was fresh---the tortillas were even made there that day. The al pastor was very good, flavorful and with some nice crunchy pasts on the tender pork. The chorizo sausage was very good too, nice chunks of the somewhat spicy sausages. All tacos came on two corn tortillas, with the nice onions and cilantro on top as well as a fresh lime and some radish slices on the side. The chivo taco was a surprise, it has been a favorite that I can't find anyplace except in SoCal taquerias; and then not even in that many. The goat was cooked perfectly and shredded. Think of a very mild lamb taste---if you like lamb you'll love chivo. The sauce was really nice on it. all in all, it was the most delicious taco I've had in a long time. The chile relleno was nicely done, the stuffed papilla pepper with egg batter on it stuffed nicely with cheese and fried. Topping it was a red sauce, somewhat like an enchilada sauce. Extra points for the sliced sautéed onions on top of it---they really made the dish. They do have beer and soft drinks here. My choice was a Mexican aqua fresca, the drink you usually find in a traditional taqueria. I had my favorite, tamarindo, slightly sweet and pleasantly tart, a very tasty drink that went well with the meal. Overall, the place was a delight. Not fancy, but certainly enjoyable and clean. Prices were very reasonable too. I'll definitely be back to try some more of their dishes! read more
