Holy Pozole! In the area to drop of Amazon returns to Kohl's and had to stop in for my go-to pozole. It's been a while, but it's still as yummy as ever. Placed a to-go order and was ready and waiting when I arrived (if you do a phone order, make sure it's the right location...they have a few!). Yeah, it's summer...what better time for some hot soup!! Chock full of tender, flavorful pieces of pork, a ton of hominy in a mild chili-based broth, Tacos el Rey does it right. It's a huge portion, enough for a couple of meals. Comes with fired tortilla round as well as the usual condiments of cabbage, onions, fresh oregano and limes. Really hits the mark. Convenient location in the Safeway shopping center on MaeAnne and McCarran. Plenty of parking and a quiet, chill atmosphere if you decide to dine in. Always friendly, always fresh! read more

Nice clean authentic Mexican restaurant, notwithstanding the plain-looking exterior. Good amount of seating inside, with warm-sounding Mexican music coming lightly through the speakers. Reminded me of the Mexican restaurants in Southern California. Prices are about average, and actually pretty good when you consider the sizable portions. The service person behind the register was friendly and efficient, and our to go order was prepared pretty quickly. We came at 4:15, so it wasn't that busy yet. Lots of yummy-sounding options on the menu. I got a shrimp ceviche tostada--fresh, and the macerated texture held a lot of lime juice--and the chicken mole. The beans and rice that came with the mole were solid--the beans especially--though everything was just a tiny bit too salty. I also found the salsa for the tortilla chips to be a bit too garlicky. Just slightly, though--it was all still very good. The mole sauce was a rich dark color and was also very fresh-tasting, but maybe not quite as deep of a flavor as I was hoping. The on-the-bone chicken it covered was VERY tender. I'd recommend this place for rich authentic Mexican food and will definitely be back to try the tacos. read more

Definitely worth stopping by, and some of my favorite tacos in Northwest Reno. There's a ton of variety in the meats and the ones I've had are pretty good! Carne asada is my favorite, but I also enjoyed the el pastor. The tortillas and veggies just taste so fresh. My brother tried their quesa birria tacos this time, and they weren't really anyone's favorite. The tortillas were pretty soggy and the consume just tasted a bit off. Almost missed this place tucked away in the Mae Anne Shopping center near Rocky Mountain Chocolate. We were ordering to go, but there was plenty of clean seating with cute decor. Extensive menu, and the signage was exceptionally clear, so it's easy to see what you options you have. The chile verde burrito I ordered was tender and delicious, and they had some tasty seasonal champurrado on hand as well! Prices were reasonable and parking was easy. The strawberry horchata has a weird medicine like taste to it, disappointing because it looked good. The salsa they gave me had what looked like a piece of meat in it? We wanted some breakfast burritos for takeout on a snowy day, so we decided to try this spot since it is close to our house and we had never been. My husband and I both ordered chorizo breakfast burritos. The burritos themselves were good but did not taste like breakfast burritos. They technically included egg but it was quite minimal. Most of the burrito consisted of chorizo, rice, and beans which made it feel more like a lunch or dinner burrito. For a breakfast burrito, we were hoping for much more egg and some potatoes with cheese. The burrito was a large size and very filling, I had to eat it in two different sittings. The sides of red and green salsa were really good and made the burrito even better. As a burrito overall, I'd probably give 4 stars but have to give it 3 stars instead since we were looking for breakfast burritos and this did not live up to expectations. read more

This little treasure of a find is authentic and has delish food. I decided to try something new...birria soup filled with ginormous clumps of beef in a red flavorful soup. Looking like it's red hot in taste, on the contrary it's not flaming hot at all. Came with lime wedges, tortillas and a side serving of hot sauce. Boo. It used to be my go to I haven't been here for a while. Clearly they are using much much much smaller tortillas for their $10.99 burritos my son came in laughing and said "mom this burrito is the size of a spoon, Taco Bell burritos are bigger". And then said it did not fill me up, can I get some $ to run to Taco Bell? Very irritating. And OMGGGG everything is SALTY I didn't eat my beans it was so beyond salty. Well... This is my second review of this restaurant. Several years ago, after eating here a few times, and putting up with various issues, I gave them a poor rating. I waited several years and thought I'd give them another try, and I am back to give an update, IT IS NO BETTER. One of my complaints before was that the food is barely warm, and actually, not at all. This time I had 2 cheese enchiladas. There was maybe 1 ounce of cheese in each one. They were completely flat. The cheese was still in shredded, not even melted. Absolutely no sauce on them, and the tortilla was VERY dry. My lengua taco lacked flavor and was dryish. Low quality food. They do not care about their quality but, if you are hungry and have no idea what Mexican food should look and taste like then this place is perfect for you. My wife and I came here for lunch on Friday about 12:30pm. She had seen a review and photos from fellow Yelper Emily A. and just had to try the nachos. The place was probably a little over half full when we walked in the door. The order counter and menu board are right in front of you as you walk in. We were surprised to see such an extensive menu as well. We perused the menu and made our choices. My wife chose the chicken nachos and I chose to get a wet green burrito with chili verde inside. They gave us our drinks and a bowl of tortilla chips with salsa. The salsa is a very chunky type of salsa which is not what I prefer. We then went and found a seat. A short wile later our order was brought to our table and we were very impressed. They looked really good. The burrito was huge. The nachos were large loaded with toppings. Northwest Reno Mexican Restaurant Tour. First time here. Ordered the Flautas. Food was warm when I arrived. Cashier was prompt and quick at handling my order. The store was clean and all the employees looked to be staying busy, but it wasn't too packed in the store (just a few customers). The Flautas were good. They were basic. There wasn't anything in the seasoning or the ingredients that stuck out, but as Flautas they were tasty. Sometimes food doesn't need to be dolled up to be good, and Tacos El Rey does it well. We have been going to this place for years and we won't be coming back. I received a burrito that was ALL sour cream. (It was not edible)They forgot items in the burrito that I was charged for and when I called for a refund the girl was extremely rude and would not listen to what I was saying. I told her the burrito had more sour cream then beans in it, and she said well we don't do refunds. When I walked in, there were no other customers in the building, and I told the lady I was there to pick up the three menudos. I'm not sure why I still waited 15 min. to get my order? Ordered a large jamaica drink during my break, tasted like it was spoiled (disgustingly sour). Came back to have to replace later at night (after I was off, didn't drink it), but this rude female cashier (chubby Hispanic, early 40s, strong accent) was accusing me of not purchasing that day and trying to scam them for a freaking 3$ drink?!? I told her I toss my receipt, but had the transaction on my phone to prove the purchase. She flat out refused to look at it, refused to listen, refused to help. I absolutely love this place, their micheladas are so bomb! The rim has tajin and chamoy and a little lime that comes with it, absolutely love tajin. Shrimp cocktail is really good as well and they have three sizes, the large is huge and could feed two people. Great and quick service and clean spot.
