I was in the North Hills/Mission Hills area and decided Mexican was going to be the meal of the day - and thanks to the trusty Yelp app: Tacos al Tijuanense was the winner to satisfy my hunger pang. If you are a longtime LA resident or born-and-raised within the city limits and can swear to Tacos al Tijuanense sounding familiar/remembering that it was a food truck... Then your memory doesn't deceive you. Tacos al Tijuanense birthed as a food truck in 1987 quickly gaining popularity for its smoked meats and Tijuana-inspired flavors serving tacos, vampiros, quesadillas, birria tacos, etc; loaded with fresh toppings and offering a variety of meats for the protein selection. The LA love for Tacos al Tijuanense caused such popularity that the food truck expanded into brick-and-mortar locations with several now spread throughout the city. The North Hills location of Tacos al Tijuanense holds real estate near the Woodly/Nordhoff intersection in a small strip plaza shopping center that seems half sleepy and half eyebrow-raising. But, as most of us know, the hidden gems are usual the best spots so don't be deterred by such businesses like the sketchy massage parlor next door. In fact, diners will be pleasantly surprised when crossing the threshold of the entrance to find an airy interior with high ceilings, natural light, wooden accents and the combination of a trendy- almost gastropub sticking to the food truck theme (there is even a food truck motif behind the order counter) that feels like a party. Tacos al Tijuanense is not what you would expect from the outside! Tacos al Tijuanense is fast-casual meaning you order behind the counter and take a number to the table of your choice. After browsing the menu, my boyfriend chose a Quesadilla (13" tortilla filled with protein of your choice, jack cheese, cilantro and salsa with my boyfriend picking chicken - $13) and a Vampiro (toasted corn tortilla layered with jack cheese, choice of meat, onions, cilantro and salsa with al pastor - $3). For my order, I also went with a Vampiro but with chicken while also ordering Nachos to share with carne asada. When our plates arrived, we were surprised to see the size of the portions. Everything at Tacos al Tijuanense is large and in charge and they most certainly do not skimp! The fillings are overflowing with bright, fresh ingredients, toppings are numerous and the size overall makes everything shareable. My Vampiro was crisp with delicious guacamole that added a refreshing element and tender, tasty chicken. My favorite was my boyfriend's Quesadilla which was gooey, warm and perfect. You can't go wrong with a quesadilla! But we have to talk about the nachos because these nachos are HUGE! This is party size and could generously feed three people. The carne asada was heavenly and the chips tasted homemade. The only slightly "meh" factor was that the cheese atop the nachos was canned cheese and we would have preferred melted shredded cheese. This wouldn't have been such an issue had the canned cheese been in a rational amount but it seemed like a Costco-sized can poured onto these chips! These nachos were hidden under cheese glop! Regardless, they were still delicious. Tacos al Tijuanense holds true to its almost 40-year-old fame with affordable prices, delicious food, large portions giving you a bang for your buck and a surprisingly inviting ambiance. Tacos al Tijuanense is definitely recommended and the North Hills location is much recommended despite its odd plaza placement. read more

I stopped by this Tacos El Tijuanense restaurant to pick up a surprise dinner my wife. I saw their instagram video and was tempted to try their Tacos Estilo Tijuana. I called the restaurant but no one picked up so I waited and tried again where someone finally pick up. There was some communication problems because the person couldn't understand my order correctly so I had to repeat it a couple of times. I got the asada regular tacos, asada tacos Tijuana, Pozole (my wife favorite), dorados which is their crunchy taco and mulitas. When I arrived to the place, I found parking in the plaza it was in but it was a late Sunday night. I had to wait a little inside the restaurant for my food to be ready. You get your own salsa and sides. My wife loved her Pozole when I brought it home. The tacos you have to eat it while it's hot for the best taste. The regular tacos were delicious, the taco Tijuana was whatever to me. My aunt loved the dorados and my wife said the only thing missing with the mulita was the cheese. read more

Very authentic Mexican food, definitely a place locals go to. Inside is colorfully decorated with Mexican paper and murals inside. They have decent prices too. I recently went to a Mexican restaurant and it was $15 per taco, so it was a breath of fresh air to get $4 tacos here that had great portions, and very filling. Two tacos and I was full, very satisfied. They have a salsa station Thats self serve and horchatas, beer, soda fountain. Chips were good too. My critique: too many flies inside!! Recently seen some adds for Theo place on Social Media and was near this place so we decided to stop by for a bite. I ordered the Tacos estillo Tijuana and a asada burrito. My wife had the Chili Rellenjo Burrito. Mt son had the Queso tacos with Asada . The TJ tacos were awesome the only drawback was they are small. The burrito was good and a decent size. Our son loved the Queso Tacos so much I had to go order him 2 more(He ate a total 5 tacos). My wife's Chili Relleno Burrito was sadly underwhelming. This Burrito had no cheese in the Chili and the Chili was bunched up at to bottom of the burrito to boot. The taste was ok according to my wife, but didn't meet expectations. Please note that this place does not make their own chili Relleno's in-house. The place was somewhat busy, and was a little messy, but not dirty by any means. The restrooms needed some attention for sure. The price was a little high, but it was overall good. These tacos are probably the closest to a TJ taco that I've had stateside so far. The restaurant offers a wide range of Mexican specialties. Their main thing are the Tijuana-style tacos, hence the name. I'm ordered 3 carne asada tacos, Tijuana style. This means the tacos came with cilantro, onions, fresh tomato salsa, and guacamole. The guacamole is what makes them Tijuana style. The restaurant offers a wide variety of drinks including fountain drinks and aguas frescas. The tacos were delicious. The meat was tender and flavorful - I was in heaven!! The restaurant has plenty of seating and can easily accommodate large groups. They also offered adult beverages, including various flavors of Michelada's. The staff was very attentive and friendly, and the kitchen prepare prepared my order pretty quickly. The food was nice and hot. I am definitely going back to this place when I am in the area for work and recommend this place to anyone who wants delicious authentic Mexican tacos. I really love the Corbin location but today I decided to try this location for the first time. It's very cute and clean inside with a fun ambiance. The music brings more of a vibe to go along with the neon lights and lively environment. The staff was very nice and pleasant and there's plenty of parking in the private lot. I ordered the carne asada torta with no beans and was kind of disappointed. The meat was extremely tough and the bread was super soggy. I would recommend getting the salsa on the side. I had been to their Northridge location so new their mulitas de cabeza , quesatacos de asada were going to be good and they were. I love how this location has so much more going on. I can't believe I've never written a review for this place. I stumbled upon it one random Sunday morning when I was craving good tacos near my house, and I've been hooked ever since. Hands down, they have the best birria tacos. They offer pozole and menudo on the weekends which is incredible, the tortas are fantastic and the asada tacos are phenomenal. The service is outstanding the girls are always so warm and welcoming. I was going almost every other day for about a week before I had to tell myself I need a little break . They have a great fresh salsa bar and if I remember correctly, they used to or still do have a DJ on Mondays that comes in around 3 or 4 until closing, which adds to the fun vibe. Taco Tuesday specials cash only on the TT specials although they do take credit cards and Apple Pay. They also have other locations in Northridge and Sherman Oaks near the CVS off Ventura and Kester. There are plenty of tables inside whether you're dining solo or coming with a large group. I recommend this place like it's my job. I rarely leave negative reviews, but I feel this is important to share. After eating at this restaurant, three of us became sick with fever, diarrhea, and body aches within a short time. We strongly believe it may have been related to the food or possibly the lemon that was served with our meal. This was very disappointing because we were looking forward to a good experience. Found this place next to my house. Ordered carne asada tacos and birria noodles to go. They tasted GREAT- until I bit into some strange texture. Took it out my mouth and it looked like raw chicken flesh. Normal cooked fat has a more brownish look and soft texture . This piece was very pink and a bit tacky/ tough. It ruined my appetite to see.
