From the adorable decorations to the delicious homemade-style beans, something about this place reminded me of my grandmother and instantly brought me so much joy. I ordered a mix of cheese and chicken enchiladas, and WOW the chicken was cooked perfectly and everything was delicious! My friend ordered the chilaquiles with verde sauce and asada. The meat was great, although personally I wish the verde sauce had a little more spice. She also ordered the Café de Olla and let me try it... SOOOO GOOD!!! I already know I'm ordering my own next time! I also had the chance to meet the owner, and he was incredibly attentive to both his customers and employees, which I loved seeing. I went in there on a Sunday around 11am with my 7year old. I don't know what's up with these restaurants now a days but service was shitty. She was even rude to my daughter. She had a nasty attitude and no smiles at all. I asked if they sold sopes I asked where on the meñu was it? So I can look at my options. The server told me it wasn't on the Meñu. In my head I'm like "how do you not have it on the meñu but yet sell it ?" I didn't make it a big deal but for some reason she seemed annoyed. I also asked one of the other servers if they can bring a lemonade for my daughter, she had said yes she can do that. But.. We got our food 35 mins later (keep in mind it was one plate) we were waiting on. & we still hadn't gotten our lemonade I had asked for. The cook brought us our plate & he was nice and asked if we needed anything else. I said " I asked one of the servers for a lemonade and it still hasn't been brought." & he mentioned he would let them know. Then the server comes back with an attitude and places it on the table, not even a word said. I even thanked her multiple times and nothing was said, no "you're welcome" or anything. She never even checked up on us or asked if we needed anything else. If you can't handle being a server why even work as one? Simple as that. Happy hour weekdays from 3pm to 7pm with a fun drink menu with a nice bar section next to the kitchen and ofcourse you gotta have menudo and pozole on the weekends. They also have hot soups (Caldos). We ordered the Taco Fiesta platter that comes with 4 tacos (protein of choice-seafood extra) and rice/beans and the chilaquilles platter with carne asada and 2 eggs sunny side up. Family owned authentic Mexican restaurant, yes please! It's located in a small shopping plaza off balboa. Inside has a good amount of table seating with a bar off to the side. Also, met the owner and he hand-makes all the Agua frescas and syrups for the margaritas. I got a jamica Agua Fresca, delicious! It even had some of the dried flowers in it. I also got the potato taco plate, they are crispy and had good flavor. I added some of the salsa on the table to them as well, I like my tacos spicy. They also offer two types of beans, whole (vegan) and refried (which has pork), I opted for the whole beans with a side of rice. Xochipilli is located in a strip mall off of Balboa and Sherman Way and I'm so glad I gave it a try. There's plenty of space to sit and I appreciate its Mexican authenticity. Our server was friendly and quick to bring us our drinks, chips and salsa and take our order. Our order arrived promptly as well. I had the birria enchiladas plate and enjoyed every bite. My vegetarian sister had the potato tacos and said she would order again. My son had the torta de asada and said it earned being in his top 3 torta list. We had 11 people in our group and most were vegetarians. We debated going to a vegan place but those who ate meat didn't want to go there. So, we decided to go to a regular Mexican restaurant with vegetarian choices. After calling 3 places to find out if they have chicken stock in their rice and lard in their beans, we found this place so we made a reservation here. When pulled in our 2 cars in the parking, people from first car got out and looked at the strip mall and one person said, I don't know about this place. Second car pulled in and one person said, let's go check it out, let's not take grandpa in yet, this doesn't look nice to me. Well , grandpa decided to get out. We all got to the front of the restaurant and we decided, we are going in. They had our table reserved, so reluctantly, some people sat down and I sat down looking forward to some good Mexican food!! We had great drinks, chips and salsa ( 3 types of salsas). Everyone ordered type of food they wanted, chicken fajita, chicken taco, fish taco and vegetable burritos, and vegetable enchilada. Everyone loved their food and service. These picky people even talked about coming back again. This is a HUGE compliment to the place. Prices were really reasonable and they were liberal with their chips and Salsa. With our group, that's a definite plus and a compliment to the chef. I ordered mango tamarind margaritas which was well blended that it didn't taste like too much of alcohol or too much syrup. Our group also ordered regular margaritas and virgin mango and tamarind margarita which were were delicious too!! I spoke to owner and complimented him on the drinks, food and service. He prides himself on making fresh food. They are probably going to move to a bigger location on Saticoy. I hope their food, service and prices don't change too much!! Last time I gave this restaurant six stars; this time I'm giving it seven! Five years after first opening their doors, they are still upholding the same high standards they started with. Quality, flavor, ambiance, service, cleanliness and menu items all deserve a solid seven stars! On this visit, we ordered the carne asada plate, the whole fried tilapia, and a taco plate. The steak was cooked exactly to our request- medium, juicy, flavorful and tender. The rice and beans rounded out the plate perfectly. The tacos came on fresh, flavorful corn tortillas. I tried the aseda, barrio, carnitas, corn and poblano (veggie) tacos. Each one had its own character and the consome served alongside elevated every bite. I expected it to be overly salty, but to my surprise it was balanced and delicious. The talapia was beautifully crispy without being greasy and the tangy savory saucs served with the tortilla chips paired perfectly with the fish. By the end of the meal, everyone at our table agreed: we need to come here more often to explore the rest of the menu. WOW! What an incredible delicious meal I just had at Xochipilli! I am so impressed and so happy to have found this wonderful restaurant! The food was so fresh and tasty! They make everything from scratch, including all the sauces. Also, the purées and juices for the drinks and the menu items. This is so RARE! I started w a Paloma to drink and you can taste and tell the juice is fresh squeezed. Jorge and Ulisa were so knowledgeable on the menu and the service was exceptional! I ordered the chicken fajitas, fresh guacamole, spicy bean dip w chorizo and chips. The tortillas were fresh and every single dish was so yummy! Also the churros! Omg! After checking in at this business on Yelp, I took photos of the nice, clean, chill dining room, my vegetarian burrito, and my Dad's 3 tacos so I could leave a review. We were happily and warmly served by the owner. I enjoyed my burrito and I told the owner that I like judging restaurants on how good their vegetarian options are, and his was worth repeating. UNFORTUNATELY-- my Dad made a mistake a day or two later, and he thought he was overcharged. I calculated an unauthorized 25% tip and accused this business of fraud on Yelp and Google and left 1-star reviews. This business graciously responded and thoughtfully pointed out that the bill was in my dining room photo. Upon review of my own photo, it looks like my Dad did actually write down what he was charged. I guess my Dad is getting old. My Dad and I both know how difficult it is to run a small business, but we can only imagine how difficult it must be to run a restaurant. I regret being another unfair frustration for a small business owner. For me, the whole point of taking photos and leaving reviews for any restaurants I visit is to SUPPORT GOOD BUSINESS AND ESTABLISHMENTS--not to mistakenly smear them. My boyfriend and I had an incredibly unwelcoming experience at Xochipilli this afternoon, Thursday, May 29th, around 4:35 PM. After waiting to be seated, a cook kindly told us to sit anywhere in the nearly empty restaurant. We chose a table, only for the waitress to immediately tell us to move to a smaller one because of "policy." When I tried to explain that her colleague directed us to sit there and asked for a clearer reason, she was dismissive and rude, stating, "He's just the cook." Her only explanation remained "policy," and she offered no further help or understanding. Feeling completely disrespected by her unprofessional attitude, we decided to leave before even ordering. We won't be returning to Xochipilli, and we certainly won't recommend it. This kind of service ruins what should be a simple dining experience. read more

Had dinner here on a Friday night. The service was friendly and attentive. They brought chips with 4 different salsas/hot sauces...they were SO freaking good! I kept eating chips, just so I could eat the sauces. I ordered a combo with 4 tacos - grilled chicken, birria, carne asada, and al pastor. ALL of them were delicious, but I really loved the birria! It was so flavorful and juicy. The rice and beans were excellent too. My nephew ordered huevos rancheros and said it was excellent - it looked super yummy too. We both enjoyed everything so much. I was looking at the dishes being carried to other tables, and there was this giant cauldron sized bowl of soup that looked fantastic! The owner came and spoke to us. He was so nice to talk to. The only horrible thing there is the parking, but that is about to be remedied. The owner told us they are moving just up the road to Saticoy and White Oak, so that will be a great improvement. Casual spot with decent ambience and good food. When I got the check, though, the price was higher than the menu price. I asked the waiter about that and he said it was because they add some if you're going to pay by credit card. First of all, he couldn't have known if I was going to pay with cash or credit when he brought the bill, second of all, these kinds of shady practices are uncool in general. The price is the price on the menu. I think this might even run afoul of Californias new transparent pricing law. If I hadn't paid close attention, and then been willing to ask about it, I would have just ended up paying more than the menu listed price. Docked a couple stars, and felt I needed to warn folks. On Cinco de Mayo it's a "must" to have Mexican food...right?! So I went through my "yelp Mexican food collection" list and not too far of a drive. The reviews were good and my daughter agreed with me to order here. They were open on the busiest day for Mexican food so we took our chances and I am glad we did. Although we were originally told our order would be ready in 20 mins, (it was actually an hour), it still deserved a 5 star review and a pass for taking longer. The inside is very clean. We made a catering order from Xochipili for a DIY Taco Party a day in advance. The order was easy to place for a party of 10 adults and 5 children. 50 taco tray (grilled chicken, beef asada, pork al pastor), comes with cilantro, onion, green salsa, and red hot salsa quesabirria 2 cheese quesadilla 2 churro orders rice & beans a la cart = all under $300 We had ordered to be ready by 3:30 pm but food wasn't ready until closer to 4:00 pm, not too long of a wait but something to consider when you have a party. Luckily we planned to pick up before the party started for this allowance. Food was really good and delicious but wish they had a whole catering menu available to make future orders more transparent. We host a lot for company/holiday/school functions and we're always on the look out for catering menus pdf to have on file. read more
