The facilities leave something to be desired and clearly haven't been updated in years, if not decades, but I ate every bite of my tostada de aguachile which was exactly what I was craving. They have an open bar of sides like pickled onions and grilled jalapeños which I nibbled on while we waited for our food which did take a solid twenty-ish minutes probably. A friend recommended this place to me. I do love fish tacos and seafood in general. The menu is large with lots of variety and several things looked good. Service was very friendly, and it's always good to have a parking lot in Highland Park - a very busy area. The fish taco I got was tasty in every way but I found the fish to smell too fishy. This place is walking distance from my house, and I've been meaning to check it out for quite some time. I finally did the other day and wished I hadn't waited so long. Taco Ensenada specializes in Baja style fish tacos, but their extensive menu also features burritos, quesadillas, tostadas, and more - all at a reasonable price. It's small inside with about five tables. The décor is lively with colorful fish along the wall. The man behind the counter was very friendly and I ordered a fish taco ($3.75) and shrimp taco ($3.99) to go. He asked if I wanted it with everything and I said, "yes." I didn't have to wait long for my food and quickly walked home so I could grub. The tacos looked so good. I couldn't wait to take a bite. The batter on the fish & shrimp was still crispy. The fish was flaky and tender and the shrimp plump and juicy. They were encased in two soft corn tortillas and topped with thinly sliced cabbage, Pico de Gallo, & crèma. They were both delicious! First time here & could not wait to try the quesatacos. Ordered one to try and when I got it was shocked. It looked like a taco with cheese. Which seemed odd. When I asked the lady at the register she laughed and said that is what you ordered. I told her it wasnt. She it only looked different because they were out of the birria broth. 3.5 stars is just about right. I live a couple of blocks from this place but there are quite a few of them scattered around the L.A. area; I've only eaten at this one. The food is what I'd call "careless" or "sloppy", ie, kinda thrown together in a slapdash fashion. The fish tacos run the gamut from quite good to just OK; the one time I tried the carne asada tacos I found the meat chewy and gristly so I haven't tried them again. They do a lot of business so ingredients are always fresh. The one thing they really do right is the frijoles: I can honestly say they're the best refried beans I've ever had in a Mexican establishment, and I only wish the rest of the food was on a par. Those beans are really, really good. They have "2-for-1" tacos on Tuesdays (fish) and Thursdays (asada/pollo/pastor) which makes a good bargain (at least for the fish tacos) and that's what keeps me coming back. The place is small and decorated in bright colors with only 6 or 7 tables; it can get crowded on Tuesdays and Thursdays. They have a condiment bar with limes or lemons, pickled onions, and chiles toreados, and every table has a variety of salsas, which is a nice touch. Service is friendly and the parking situation is OK with lot and street parking available. If you're a local give them a try, but Villa's, La Estrella, and even King Taco are better and more consistent than these guys. read more

I love fish taco Tuesdays here - you get two hefty fish tacos for 3.24. AMAZING! The salsa provided at the table goes well with the creamy white sauce (unsure what it is but it's so good.) I love that their lettuce is on the softer shredded side. It's a bit skimpy on the veggie toppings but size of the piece of fish and the condiment bar make up for it. Came in on Tuesday after 7:30 PM and managed to snag a corner booth. Condiment bar was minimal but the lemons were juicy and the pickled onions were spicy. I also tried the ceviche which didn't taste as fresh as it could but was a nice treat for lunch the next day (got too full off two tacos). I used to love coming here. My go to order was the Aguachile tostada. It was always so good and the serving size was always reasonable and filling. I decided to go to Tacos Ensenada this weekend and they're definitely not the same anymore. The cashier that took my order was rude and she mentioned they're not the same management anymore. So when I got my order it did not taste the same and they served way too little to be charging $10 for a tostada. The staff is hard working, and the food is good, I work in kitchens as well, but there's this one lady that looks disgusted all the time as a cashier, in Spanish I think they would call it amargada. I don't blame her because Tuesdays can be fairly busy. On the other hand the other cashier is a sweetheart, and can handle the pressure. The shorter one, the chapparita. 10/10 Most of the time I do phone orders, or order then come back in twenty minutes because I don't like to press for food. This particular day, I think they were understaffed and something must've been going on, but it's kind of wild. The chicken burrito was also tasty and filling. There are six 2-person tables that line one side of the shop and 2 booths that can fit six persons each. I'm so glad they opened up different location, and the one in Highland Park happened to be the closest one to my house. I would say this is 100% a legit taco place. My usual order are the Al Pastor, Carne Asada, Tripa, Fish Tacos, and Burrito. The Fish tacos is out of this world! They gave you a generous piece of the fish tacos. The Al Pastor and Carne Asada are always juicy. Everything is really good and satisfying! Although don't expect too much from customer service standpoint. The service is pretty much inconsistent ever since the pandemic hit. However, it's not a deal breaker for me, I came for the food and the service is not going to stop me! I've been a big fan of Tacos Ensenada since they opened the original spot in Duarte, the owner is from Tecate Mexico and knows how to do a proper Baja style Fish and Shrimp taco. This is a very small location. I have been to others. This one does not have any outside seating. The food is not bad although I feel like there are some differences. I had some shrimp tacos here. I felt like my tortillas were either old are stale. I could not quite tell which. I also felt like my shrimp had not been freshly fried. But still, they were warm enough. I don't know if the rather disgusting look that the cashier gave me when we first entered had anything to do with it, but this is a much closer location for us to visit rather than some that are in East LA. my husband ordered a fish and shrimp burrito. He said it was just OK. Usually he says how good it is. So again, I don't know what it was about this visit. It was just OK. The inside seating areas were needing to be wiped down. There was grease on the tables. I don't know that there was any sanitizing going on. But it was full of locals and usual, so I have a feeling. Tasty, reliable Baja style fish taco chain. I grew up eating this and Taco Nazo style fried fish and fried shrimp tacos. Good tacos and burritos. Inside is simply decored, nothing fancy, just a few tables and a counter for chiles and limes. Simple menu and reasonable prices. There's a small lot in front, but street parking around the block. I've been getting the Taco Tues fish tacos for quite a few years. They were $1, now they're $1.25. I always take them home or to the park to eat. The tacos are pretty uneven in quality. When they're good, they're a great deal. I always order them with the crema on the side, or lately with light crema. That keeps them from getting soggy. This is a big problem with fried fish tacos that aren't eaten immediately--as Pancho V rightly says. (Fan of your reviews, btw.) But I'd say 70-80% of my tues fish tacos from here have been very good to excellent, considering the price. 3 fish tacos for just over $4 with tax? That's a f'ing great deal. I've eaten $4 or $5 fish tacos that weren't as good. The pico is consistently very good and fresh. My experiences at the other fish taco chain (Baja) have been much worse. So if you're trying to decide which one to go to in HLP, Tacos Ensenada is the clear winner. Not perfect, but pretty darn good for the price.
