Well today was my day Started off with Cafe de la olla... just add a little cream and flavors and sugar was just right. Then order a caldo de camarón, to my surprise the broth was delicious, right amount of spices including chile and it was made to order. Shrimp was not chewy perfectly cooked along with the veggies Lastly just had to Huevos Rancheros, my eggs we're perfect over medium, do you know how many places over cook them, the sauce was mild and perfect, the tortillas weren't made to be tostadas just perfect as i cut into my eggs and tortilla. Old school restaurant that's been here for around a 100 years. The building still has the old metal sign and the owner told me it used to be called Salazar cafe. The interior is charming and cozy and they offer a few parking spots out back. We ordered Huevos a La Mexicana with flour tortillas and some chips with the hottest salsa. MUY RICO! I always drive by this restaurant and hadn't had the chance to try it out until now. They have a small parking lot in the back and you can also find street parking: I went right at lunch time so it was a little busy but we managed to find a table to sit at. I ended up ordering chilaquiles verdes and my friend ordered the huevos rancheros, the food came out promptly and looked amazing! We also ordered agua de guayaba which was delicious. The chilaquiles verdes had the perfect amount of sauce and they weren't very spicy, the huevos rancheros were perfectly made as well and came with a side of tortillas. Definitely give this place a try if you want authentic Mexican food and of course support a local business! read more

I grew up in Highland Park and lived walking distance from Chico's. As a kid, I never got the chance to try it, but I'd always pass by -- whether walking home from school, church, or just around the neighborhood. Now, years later, I came back to visit my small hometown -- which has definitely changed with gentrification -- but I was so happy to see Chico's still standing strong after all this time. And after finally eating here, I understand why. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted warmly by the owner himself -- super welcoming and down to earth. I couldn't decide between two dishes, and when I asked for a recommendation, he offered to combine them: green enchiladas and carne asada on one plate. That alone deserves 5 stars! The food was absolutely delicious. Even my brother, who ordered the chilaquiles, couldn't stop raving about his plate. Everything was fresh, flavorful, and clearly made with love. The space is small but clean and charming, with a nostalgic vibe that instantly made me feel at home. I'll definitely be coming back every time I visit Highland Park. Better late than never is how the saying goes. However, I'm kicking myself for not coming here sooner, but I'm glad I finally did. If you are looking for good, authentic Mexican Food Chico's is the place. In addition to the tables of happy diners, there was a steady stream of people coming in to pick up to-go orders. The place is small & quaint, and the festive décor adds to the appeal. The chips were fresh, and the salsa was flavorful. I ordered the Camarones a la Diabla and it was fantastic. You can request the level of spiciness - extra spicy for me, please. The Diabla sauce was addicting - I wanted to lick the plate. The shrimp were juicy & tender. The Spanish rice was fluffy, and the refried beans were creamy. Both were tasty. The homemade flour tortillas were fresh, warm, & soft - perfect for soaking up all that yummy sauce. After my meal I had the pleasure of speaking with the owner Alberto, who told me this family-owned restaurant opened in 1991 and he's been working here every day since. He loves his customers and the community, and they all love him back. During the pandemic they asked him how they could help, and he said, "Order food," so they did daily in order to keep this beloved neighborhood gem afloat. I had no idea Chico's was a historic LA restaurant until I tried their chicken soup or caldo de pollo. Perfectly seasoned and salted just like my grandmother's caldo. It comes with tortillas and Mexican fried rice so good!!! The rice is prefectly popped and not drenched in tomato sauce. I like that the veggies are thinly sliced and abundant in the chicken broth. Each soup was good for two servings, since it comes with a quarter leg chicken. Highly recommend Chico's for their traditional soups!!! Can't wait to try the rest of their menu!!! read more

I woke up craving tamales and have before gotten pozole for pick-up here, which was delicious! When I saw they also have tamales, I had to return for more. The salsas are rich and the Cafe De Olla was absolutely delicious. We asked for them non-dairy and it made the coffees even better with the Mocha non-dairy milk drinks. The service was wonderful, we had our food within ten minutes of sitting down and everything was so fresh. The ambiance is very family and community restaurant oriented. We saw some teens sitting alone and enjoying their food, a few couples and families. The place looks small on the outside but it's cozy on the inside. This is a very cute and cozy family-owned Mexican spot, very welcoming and comfortable to sit in. Went for breakfast with a pal, on a Sunday morning and the cafe de la olla was a great start to the morning. I had chilaquiles roja which was flavorful and delicious, while my buddy had Huevos Rancheros which he loved. So I haven't reviewed Chicos mostly because I'd like to keep them to myself, but they should get their flowers. I will be real and say in the million times I have been here, I get the same thing - a chile relleno plate. The chile relleno is perfect. No notes. The chile is cooked well, cheese is melty, egg batter is perfect, sauce is great. It's just stunning. They also have the best beans I've ever had. Not an exaggeration, the best beans I have ever had. This is my go-to restaurant for pozole. Most places only serve pozole on the weekend, but Chico's sells it everyday. You have a choice of red or green with chicken or pork. I normally order the green pork pozole. They are very nice here. Takes about 10-15 min for them to prep to go.. depending on how busy they are, but worth the wait. Especially pleasing meal right now with our unusually cold and wet Springtime. read more

I was craving café al olla, the Mexican coffee not the hipster joint in Burbank, and didn't want to wait 1.5 hours at the said hipster joint so I found this place. Wow how have I not been here? 20 years ago, maybe even 15, you wouldn't have found many people other than Mexicans because this wasn't the greatest neighborhood. And before I get slammed I'm Hispanic annnnnnd used to hang in this area. But thanks to gentrification and affordable housing it's nice. So chicos is a corner spot next a cheap motel. Call it character. But this place was fabulous. Had a cup of of the cinnamon chocolate coffee and it was some of the best I've every had. Next moved on to the chilaquilles and wow again delish. The chips remained crispy under the savory green sauce and the rice and beans were on point. I've had a 100 variations of this dish but by far in the top 10. The Mexican omelette was tasty. Nothing out of the box with this. It's some veggies and rice and beans but still good. Same with the ceviche. Decent. Had better had worse. The pozole and menudo though..... straight up fire! They do not take any days off when serving the Pozole. The Pozole is served 7 days per week and it has always been robust even on a weekday; meaning they do not skimp on the meat or the hominy. I get the red Pozole with pork meat and it comes with the sides. Very satisfying. Friendly service as well. read more

Great and friendly service, decent clean and cute interior. Nothing fancy but authentic. They don't really have "mild" options for salsa but they do have "mild" option of other sauces. Salsa was a bit too spicy for me but authentic and really tasty. The chips are fresh and crispy, not soggy. Presentation of food is simple but delicious. Beans are salty and rice is a bit more bland, but together is fits perfectly. Steak is so flavourful and good texture. The taquitos is a MUST TRY! I've only had chicken one up until now as the restaurant I go only sell chicken and my ex's roommate only ever made chicken, but who knew beef taquitos can be this yummy and juicy. We ordered takeout from this location with a little bit of everything. Ceviche: maybe they ran out of lime, but they used lemon instead. The shrimp appeared a little darker than usual, so it wasn't very fresh Fish taco: This is good. They grilled the fish, so there's no thick batter like the other places. It's a little weird that they use romaine lettuce instead of a cabbage. Lengua taco: Good, but it can be packed with more flavor. I didn't get any salsa so it was a bit on the dry side. Guacamole: very fresh and chunky, only if they add a tad more salt then PERFECT! read more
