The hubs and I were passing through on the way to J-Tree and stopped in for a quick plate of steak fajitas and a taco. Holy cow!! This place is so good. So many regulars came in while we ate, which I feel like is a really good sign. The steak was really well seasoned and blackened. Some pieces were a tad dry, which I actually love lol. I've been going here for over two years now, this place literally does not compare to anywhere else. Whenever I'm back from college I always make it a point to go here at least once over break... one time I went every day for a week! I recommend the carne asada tacos, horchata, and their chips and salsa. Homemade and delicious, they never fail to disappoint. The staff is so nice and friendly, the restaurant is very clean, and the owners always say hello to me when I walk in. Very sweet and nice! This business is family run too! What a delightful gem in an unassuming corner location. Tacos Gonzalez serves up street tacos, burritos, crispy tacos and a few other mexican specialties in a warm and always busy environment. You can order at the counter or table (I believe) and you don't pay up front, even at the counter, as it is common to want more;-)! What a nice little upsell opportunity that I am sure pays off more often then not. We each ordered 3 various street tacos, as well as chips and guacamole. The chips and guac come with 3 additional sauces: green, mild red and spicy red, as well as limes and radishes. This sauce tray is lovely and what you don't eat with your chips is prime for all of your entrees. I had the chorizo, chicken and carne asada tacos. The chorizo was my favorite as it definitely had the most flavor, but all were really good. Service is prompt and super friendly and the prices are great! Normally I love King taco but that is only in select places such as Pasadena, Highland Park, etc. Down in the desert, however, there are actually a lot of taco places but hard to find amazing Carne Asada. This taco place is really close to a Costco so that's nice. Service is very friendly. The street tacos are good but not amazing. But for Indio/La Quinta standards, the tacos were tasty. I wish they just had better sauce options. Tacos with just onions+cilantro+meat+tortilla is sort of bland to me..but maybe I'm too used to tacos from Tijuana and San Diego. The tripas were crispy and the chorizo wasn't too salty either. If I came back, I'd probably stick with the cabeza+tripas+chorizo. read more

My friends and I stopped here after we left our Coachella Air BnB. We were pretty tired from the weekend, and we wanted to eat breakfast before our long drive back to LA. We were still ordering, and we ended up standing around until another table finished and we could grab it. I was starving, so I ordered the Huevos Racheros breakfast platter. It includes 3 eggs, rice, and refried beans... and this plate was HUGE! They don't skimp on portions, and everything was hot and smothered in saucy (I love lots of sauce on my food)! Breakfast platters are only sold from 8 am- 2 pm, and my place was well worth the $9.99. I also shared from Street style tacos, sold a la cart at $1.89 each. I got one Al Pastor (marinated pork) and one Pollo asado (shredded chicken). I really enjoyed the pork taco because the meat was tender and flavorful. The chicken taco was on the dry side, which I remedied with the sauce from my breakfast platter, but alone, I wasn't amazed by it. The service is fast and they are very accommodating. What a gem! Super friendly waiter who was patient with our family of 5 that includes a 4 year old boy with autism (this means he'll may randomly wander or have meltdown). Food was delicious - bean and rice like moms - yum! Large portions - tastey chips and salsa. Chabela beer cocktails and two breakfast burritos for mom, dad, crispy taco plate and quesadillas plate for kids. (A Chabela is a beer cocktail like a michelada but with spicy tomato juice) They had no problem with my 4 year old sharing with his sisters and gave me an extra plate at no charge. I almost thought that I wouldn't get a seat to eat my food. Good thing a majority of the people were ordering to-go. You order up at the cashier, then find a table to sit at. There were a lot of people standing near our table waiting for us to finish, so it was a bit uncomfortable. We ordered 8 street tacos, which came out to around $18, a little pricey, given that I usually get these street tacos for around $1 at home. Food took around 20-30 minutes to come out, which was pretty slow. Tacos were pretty good though, salsa is a little lacking in flavor. We'd visited the area twice in the last few months (from up north) and I'd had Tacos Gonzalez on my radar and list both times. So we went there to get street tacos on a recent Tuesday ("Taco Tuesday" most places). I checked the website before going, as it was not close to where we were staying. Pictures and reviews and menu all looked great. Not driving 8 miles, unless it's worth it. We ordered an assortment of various street tacos --- carne asada, al pastor, pollo. We live next door to a taqueria at home, and I've been cooking Mexican food for my family for 50 years (including tacos) so we have high standards. We were hoping for something of the same quality (and volume) as our next door taqueria, which has Taco Tuesday for $1.59. Packed full and very tasty, with the works. Our order was To Go, of course, with no indoor dining. Order came in a small brown bag, handed to us. Hmmm. I'm used to a massive plate (or two plates to separate the different kinds of meat) at my taqueria when I order 4 tacos. Also --- the website said street tacos were $1.99 each. The menu on the wall at Tacos Gonzalez had been altered with a black pen to $2.09. No discount for Taco Tuesday. I knew we were in trouble, with the small brown bag. It had been a hot, long day so we just drove home. I wasn't about to take it apart there, while people were waiting in line behind me and I'm a guest in the desert. Eight mile drive back to our lodging --- opened the little brown bag and the aluminum foil. Four tiny tortillas (the "tiny" is expected) folded up in half with very little meat in each --- around a tablespoon full. I had bought flour tortillas at Vallarta Supermarket the day before, so I scraped everything in all four little corn tortillas into one 8-in flour tortilla to make a meal. Hardly any meat in any of them. Also, it was tasteless, compared to our neighborhood taqueria. I had to put some cheese and salsa from my fridge and extra onions into the flour tortilla to boost the flavor. This is the only time we've been there and haven't sampled other dishes, but we won't return, based on that experience. The postitive reviews surprise me, especially on the street tacos. Fortunately, we did find other great Mexican restaurants in the Valley. I would give this place a one-star, except for the setting was sweet and the staff was friendly, plus I can tell the cooks are working hard as you can see the kitchen from where you order take-out. read more

Some of the best tacos I've ever had!! I tried Tacos Gonzalez in December when I was visiting Joshua Tree. I am a bit of a taco connoisseur so I had pretty high expectations. I was completely blown away!! Easily some of the best tacos I've ever had. The carnitas were a standout. The flan was super good, as well. I ordered at the cash register and service was friendly. They were a little busy but they got to my order in a reasonable amount of time. It was takeout only due to COVID. Overall, 5 stars and I still think about these tacos all the time.
