It's a bit of a wait, but well worth it. Quite pleased with the amount of food I got for my monnies. The young lady at the counter was very friendly and kind. I ordered 4 carne asada tacos and only ate 3. There was a generous amount of meat, onions and cilantro so I was nearly full by the third taco. I was super happy to see that they had the habenero sauce too, sometimes I go to other Mexican restaurants and they don't have it or I have to ask. We've been waiting for 1/2 hour for 6 tacos and they just told us another 10 minutes.

I've been eating at tacos la Estrella for years. Not only are they nice people but their food is authentic Mexican food and I've never had a bad meal there not once. People do complain about the wait times because it does take a while for you to get your food sometimes. But that's because it's made up fresh to order. There's a reason they get so busy that you can't even get through on the phone. It's the food. That's what keeps people coming back. Yes the wait times are a little bit longer but the wait is worth it. There are very few places that I would give a five star rating to very few... Coming from a background in food service and hospitality I think I have something to say about it. I would recommend trying the breakfast burrito with chorizo and eggs. The other thing I would recommend is the chicken fajita burrito. Of course the green pork enchiladas are tasty as well. They don't always have posole but when they do I would highly recommend that one as well. The Shrimp with cream sauce is very good too but if you order that eat it there because it doesn't really survive the trip home very well. Also the fresh homemade salsa is to die for. Try them out you won't be disappointed but be prepared to wait a little bit because the food is made fresh to order. read more

Where do I begin? I am notoriously hard to please when it comes to Mexican food. Well, food in general, actually. I will start out by saying that my Hispanic roots probably have something to do with that... but let's get real, authentic Mexican food IS hard to come by, especially in the suburbs of the Pacific Northwest. I'm originally from Seattle and found it fairly easy to find top notch, authentic ethnic food growing up there. But moving to Hillsboro and now working in Forest Grove? Now THAT's a Mexican food challenge. One might argue that the large Hispanic population here could theoretically provide a multitude of taco trucks and Mexican restaurants. That part is true. But are they as good as La Estrella? Not by a landslide. The menu at La Estrella is small, which is a great sign in a dive restaurant. It shows they are focused on just a few key ingredients. I ordered four carnitas tacos - $1.25 each - for a total of $5 - along with a small horchata. The pork was incredibly fresh, hot, and juicy, absolutely PACKED with delicious flavor (but they were not overly salted, which to me is usually a cop-out for lack of seasoning. These tacos were lacking nothing!) The tacos came with a simple chopped onion and cilantro topping, fresh lime wedge, and radishes for garnish. I opted for the green salsa as salsa verde is always my fave. I will just wrap up my review by saying I ordered 4 tacos with the intention of heading back to work with them, but the restaurant was quiet so I decided to stay and eat them there. So glad I did, because I ended up ordering FOUR MORE to go. (Hey, blame my pregnancy.) Only giving it two starts cuz the Cabeza taco was actually really good, I came in at 9 pm because I saw it didn't close till ten and I was craving Mexican food. I asked the girl in the counter what she recommend and she said she didn't know..... I ordered two tacos of asada one al pastor and one cabeza, the al pastor tasted just like the asada and the tortilla on these tacos suck ass and are way to greasy . The sause bar area was also super dirty and nasty. I also ordered the Mexican style enchiladas, which the girl assured me we're "Mexican authentic " BS these are Americanized enchiladas and we're not good, the rice was a few days old and the beans were nothing special. I love tacos! For $1.25 a taco with your choice of meat, cilantro, onions and whatever else you put on it from the condiment bar, it's a great price for great food! The condiment bar had red, green, habernero and aguave salsas, roasted peppers, lime, sliced radish... pretty much your traditional toppings. 3 of these tacos and a small horchata is the perfect meal for me ($5.25)! I'm a huge fan of the lengua, tripas and carnitas! The lengua is just so tender and full of flavor! The tripas were cooked to the perfect crispness! My friend really wanted to try this new resteraunt and I'll admit from the get go I was nervous. We ordered our food and it took a long time to get there and then we had to walk up to the counter to get it :(. If we are eating at a sit down place I expect to be served especially since a resteraunt down the street cost just as much but provides waaay better service. Stacks of dirty dishes near the front and we had to bus our tables when we "finished" eating. The food was AWFUL. Cheese was not melted but solid. Rice and beans were mediocre at best. Can be tasty food but you might wait 55 minutes on a Tuesday. Back of the business is good but painfully slow (one cook?), front is so bad it's not worth it, zero organization. Placing your order over the phone does nothing to speed the process, trust me I've tried many times. There is a very obvious preferential treatment to some customers over others. Avoid at anything that could be considered peak hours, but there quesadilla and tacos are amazing... One more paid employee could change everything for the better. Prices are now not cheap but at restaurant level. Also it's always super loud! Either the tv is near max volume or the Bass heavy night club sound system is cranking tunes from somewhere in the back. The tacos are by far the best around. The asada is delicious and the fish tacos are great! The only thing lacking is the salsa bar. They desperately need to step their salsa game up. While the salsa is delicious, it lacks carrot/onion/pickled jalapeño and pico. It's depressing to have to drive all of the way to don Pedro's for a good salsa bar. The tacos are phenomenal. The best I have ever had. And be prepared for the biggest torta of your life If you like that sort of thing. I'm only docking one star because they stopped making tamales which were also some of the best tamales I've had and last time I tried ordering the hot chocolate drink they said they stopped making that too. I don't understand why the best parts of their menu are discontinued and it would be great if they could find a way to meet demand rather than give it up. We have lived in Forest Grove for years and never been into this unassuming restaurant. From the out side it doesn't look like much and when you pull up it's even smaller that it looks. We didn't have the fortune of eating at this small restaurant that we can only assume is delicious by the other reviews. Restaurants have turned to having TV's which are usually distracting but in the case of today with my young children we walked in to a bloody UFC fight on the un-needed TV. The inside of this place is a dump and a little guy who looks to be 12 years old was running the front counter . We waited 45 minutes for take out and they forgot one of our items, which was prepared & ready to go in about 5 minutes. The little fella did not charge us for the mistake. This has been one of my favorite places to eat for 6 years now, especially more here lately. While they do take a while to get your order out, it is well worth the wait. When I call in an order, they always say 15 minutes even though it's more like 20-25 so I make sure to order a little more ahead of time! Their chorizo is my favorite to eat, as well as the Guadalajara burrito! I think if you have some extra time on your hands and are willing to be patient than this is the perfect place to go. I've read most of the bad comments on here, and to be clear they're misinformed. Americans are used to a way of life in the USA where they're waited on hand and foot at restaurants. This is a family business run by a Mexican family. It's not a food franchise. In Mexico things are run differently. People are not going to chase after you so you can get your food. That is your responsibility. At La Estrella, there's a bell for customers to ring at the counter so that the owners know someone is ready for their order to be taken. You have to go up to it and ring it and be patient. It's not a fast food place so don't expect things to be ready fast. It's actually a good thing they're not done this way. When they take a little longer to serve you the food, it's good because it's more likely your food has been prepped on the spot, meaning that your food is more fresh and of better quality. I've been to many Mexican restaurants, and the thing you should be judging them on is the quality of their food and not the service because people need to be understanding in that they're dealing with a whole different culture when they walk into an authentic Mexican place. I'm not someone who works here, but I have been to many other restaurants that claim to be authentic and the food is anything but that. However, this place actually has good food. You can tell by the rice and beans and the salsas. This is not fine dining. It's not meant to be. If that's what you want then find one of those five star restaurants from a food franchise if you expect to be served the American way (which appears to be having people wait on you hand and foot). But when you enter another person's culture and experience another way of life, be respectful of it. The experience at La Estrella is meant to be different because it's a family business. Try to enjoy the food. Enjoy the experience. Bad comments like the ones I've seen on here are the reason why Americans are seen as some of the rudest tourists abroad.
