The masseur tried to bully me into tipping more, even though I tipped 20% for a mediocre massage ($12 for a $60 massage) and he called me "trash" after I walked out. I'm not sure what kind of tip he was expecting for giving me a weak, low-energy massage?! He saw my partner tipped more and got angry, but my partner had a different masseur and liked his massage. So after I tipped, he fanned it out (I gave a $5 and then $7 in singles) and started yelling and said "only $12?!". During my massage, the male therapist's finger "slipped" and later in the session he patted my butt. I don't like to give away my favorite places, but I have been going to Taiji Body Work for many, many years. I started at the East Village location (which has since closed) to this one. I go once a week. I have the most bent out of shape back. My muscles are so tight that you can physically feel the golf ball size knots in my back. My massage therapist (I won't say who because then I'll never get an appointment) always works my muscles in a way that releases my knots and let's me relax. I usually go for 75 minutes at a time. They're always very kind to me and friendly. It is in a converted apartment of sorts and it is very clean and nice setting. Talking is kept to a minimum, which makes it very calming. The most noise you'll hear is the patrons who come in and talk like no one else is there. I always try to keep my volume down. They play calming music and use great oils and lotions. My therapist always checks in to makes sure that the pressure is good. He does a combination of shiatsu, deep tissue, hot stone, and reflexology. You can always speak up and say if it's too hard or soft or pressure and they'll adjust. I will always come back and even buy the gift certificates for myself (which comes at a nice discount in the long term). Enjoy a nice hot or cold water from the water fountain. Ignore the negative reviews from people who don't know how to tip. For those who don't know, you're supposed to tip at least 20 percent. Enjoy! read more

It's not a bad massage but the place is scruffy. Not dirty per se but not exactly spiffy nor clinically clean either. Curtains are left open. You see other people being massaged. The towel that's draped over you, umm, I don't know if that gets washed after every guest. The massage table itself, you know where your face goes thru the hole, that area, your nose sorta pics up the smell of dust and oldness. The hallway up to this place is scruffy. I just wish they'd give the place a proper make over. That would make it so much more acceptable. I loathe to leave this review because the people here are so nice. Decent looking place. Nothing Spectacular. Looks very much like an apartment turned massage area. The people were very friendly and instructed us to undress and PLEASE keep underwear on. My Mother, Sister and I giggled for minutes wondering what monstrosities they've seen to put such emphasis on the please. We laid down and waited roughly 4 minutes before the therapists came in and started to work us over. I'm pretty sensitive and usually hate the beginning of a massage because I'm always tense and in need of a massage but never get one. Go figure. This massage was bearable for me. When she noticed I was uncomfortable she asked if it was too hard and if I replied yes, she lightened up. She took cues really well. In the last few minutes they got the hot stones and it became pure magic. It was hot but not too hot and delightfully relaxing. I really enjoyed the warmth on my back and it was soothing going down my spine. The masseuses were quiet, well mannered and accommodating. I chose this place because of its proximity to my apartment and amazing deal of 75 minutes with hot rock massage for only $55. The reviews said make sure to ask them to lighten up their touch. Before starting, the masseuse asked hard or medium. I asked for medium. At times, she was a little rough, but asked me if it was ok. I said yes because she was digging into some big knots. My shoulders are a but sore today, but it was worth it. All in all, it was a very thorough massage with hot rocks, heated towels, and even some stretching. In particular, I liked how they did a bit of a butt massage. Most masseuses don't pay any attention to the butt, but the butt needs some loving too. The head and face massage was a great/unexpected addition as well. I wish they gave a little more attention to my hands and feet though. Overall, it is a quality massage and the price is really as a result of the location/layout. It is a long narrow room divided into little massage rooms with partial walls and curtains. Therefore, you don't get into a deep relaxation trance due to foot step, talking, phone, and clock noises. I had low expectations, it looks like a hole in the wall studio. Once you get upstairs they had a pleasantly large facility and the rooms are clean and well kept. I went on a summer day and it was not too hot which was great (and surprising). I booked a 60 minute massage, and was given a male therapist. The pricing is great, $55 for an hour, and this seriously was an excellent massage. It was not the typical asian parlor massage, he clearly had training and while it was deep tissue it wasn't overly painful. He took time between working on the tough spots, to pleasurable things like feet, head, etc. I was really surprised they even do hot stone with the 60 minute massages! Again this is not a Swedish massage. This is to help get rid of pains. They really work for 75 min. I'll bet their arms and hands hurt a lot at the end of the day. I even had hot stones, felt nice. At the end, my body was like butter, he really took out the knots. I never even had to tell him where it was, where I was feeling pain. He found it on his own and worked it out. Since I had read all the reviews, I knew to have cash and a good tip. He deserved it! 75 min. How much do you think the owner is paying them? I doubt they get vacation, sick days, or have an HR to complain to. People saying they give 10% - 15% should be ashamed of yourselves. I handed him a $20. I didn't think a great massage at the price was even possible in NYC! Don't come here looking for a swanky spa experience- you'll be sorely disappointed (pun intended). Rooms are separated by thin drywall and an even thinner curtain. You'll lay on a large paper towel like bed covering and will be covered by a bath towel. But if you can look past the fact that this place has absolutely no "fluff", then you are going to have an enjoyable experience. Which is likely the reason my husband booked massages for the both of us this evening. Unfortunately, I left Taiji more stressed out than when I arrived, much to his chagrin. Sorry to be so negative, but here goes: * I repeatedly asked the lady working on me to use a softer touch. She kept saying okay but either she couldn't understand me or she didn't have the ability to use a softer touch. Let's just say I'm in pain. * This place is no frills. Which is okay! I get that the prices are reasonably low for NYC ($55 for an hour). But the bathroom was a bit sketchy and the place in general was a bit rundown. The cleanliness factor was suspect, which made me a bit nervous. * I don't get why a massage place that posts signs that read "Keep Your Voice Down" and "No Cell Phones" has a phone that rings constantly, with the LOUDEST ring in the world. This ring interrupted my attempts at peace, way too many times. * The end of the massage was super awkward, with the masseuses (sp?) hovering about until they found out the tip (20%). At which point they disappeared without a word. They seemed bothered by the amount. Not sure if it was my imagination? There were points of the massage that were great: the hot stones were really nice, and the arm, hand, and foot part of the massage felt great. But overall this place is not for me. Yelp was showing 4 stars so we decided to drop by this place and it was a horrible experience. Came in thinking we'd found a good deal on a massage and left feeling bruised and verbally abused. 1. The massage was shitty. My masseuse literally rubbed lotion on my foot for 30 min. I asked for more pressure and she dug her knuckles into the ball of my feet and then I asked for softer and she went back to rubbing lotion on my feet. I can't win, I literally sat there waiting for it to end because I didn't want to be rude. My boyfriend actually got bruises on his feet from a different masseuse even though he asked for softer. 2. This place is RUDE. I was debating paying cash or card and decided on card, no one notified me there'd be an extra $4 dollar credit card charge (I know it's written in small letters on the wall, it just would have been nice if she saw I was debating cash or card and told me beforehand). Because of the horrible massage experiences and the $4 dollar extra charge, I decided to leave a 10% tip. This place had the AUDACITY to tell me that my 10% tip won't work because a 20% tip is MANDATORY. I said, "you're telling me but law this is mandatory?" And the woman nodded. I didn't give in. I told her I didn't receive a 20% satisfactory service so I'm not going to tip 20%. I left extremely annoyed. 3. If you want relaxing this isn't it. The phone is constantly ringing and you can hear people talking in the hall and at the front desk. I wandered in on my day off after a few very tired days of work. I was super stressed and just wanted to be relaxed. It was also my first time getting a real full on body massage, but I was too tired to be nervous! The place is clean and rooms are closed off by curtains. In the background they have calming music playing although you can still hear a little bit of whats going on outside. Where you strip everything except for undies and lay face down with a towel waiting for the masseuse to come. I had a lady who did a wonderful job. I had her focus on my shoulders more and a little bit of my calves. The massage was pretty rough getting into the little areas and scapular areas ( mine at least). She also massages the glutts and the inner thigh areas. They also do some arm and finger massages. After she had me lay on my back where she face me a small face massage and head massage which was my favorite! I originally wanted just a quick 30 min massage and ended up continuing for a 70 min massage. The total with yelp deals ended up being $55 plus $3 credit card fee and $10 tip. Left the place feeling like a new person. I definitely look forward to coming back maybe once a month in the future. read more

We visited there today. I have to say the only reason i give this low rate is because of the rude girl in the front desk. Her attitude and behaviour were extremely unpleasant. We came for a one hour treatment. Reflexology and a full body massage. From the start the receptionist was unpleasant, looking angry and not smiling once. Very impatient to our questions. When we finished, we came and pay and added 17% tip. The girl in the front desk was attacking us that we suppose to pay at least 20%, and was extremely grumpy and rude. We did not argue and payed 20% tip. She made us feel extremely uncomfortable and offended us by the way she spoke to us. The therapists and the treatment were really good actually, so its a shame that because of her attitude we will never comeback.
