Authentic Taiwanese food for sure. Service is a little questionable, but I think it's because how busy they can get. They have great drinks with boba, the full collection. All the appetizers and food are 100% authentic and I know coming from Taipei. It's honestly a great home from home. Definitely try the personal hot pot because it reminds me of Boiling Point. IYKYK. It has a ton of flavor, you get the experience of a personal wax fire, which is very rare to find in Chicago. The popcorn chicken is definitely a have to. Immediately got a food coma and took a nap. No but seriously the food is SO GOOD. I got the crispy pork chop box and partner got the crispy pork box. SO MUCH FOOD! Turning each one into two meals.... $9.95 each with plenty for a second round. I'm a lover of daikon, and the radish soup included is perrrfect. For drinks I ordered the Okinawa with pearl and it was great. They add so much boba too! I haven't had normal boba in so long due to quarantine (I've been binging on those boba popsicles instead), so this was a much needed change. I wish we had tried this place before quarantine... Came here on a Sunday for lunch with my mans (this was also where we had our first date!). There was no wait so this is def a great place to go if you wanna avoid main Chinatown chaos. I usually have a few staples I get here, and today I went with the tomato beef noodle soup. I loveeeeee this dish cause the other places in Chinatown make beef noodle soup with clear broth whereas this broth came from braising the beef and is super flavorful! It also comes with a lot of meat so that's always good. They have a new snack menu that sells "rice balls" (imagine a ball of rice around other food items? See pic). THEY'RE SOOO GOOD (but they have limited quantity each day). I recommend getting the traditional rice ball, which comes with a braised egg, pork floss, pickled veg, and fried dough (you tiao). They also use purple rice which I love. Will DEFINITELY keep coming back here for my Taiwanese food fix Update (3/12/20): My Taiwanese friends highly recommended the squid noodles in thick broth so I tried it for the first time!! It really reminded me of the soup that my mom used to make and was super nostalgic. I wish it was slightly more sour/acidic (?) but overall I really enjoyed it! Oh boy did I really want to love this place! Being born from Taipei, Taiwan, it's definitely something I miss a lot. There are so little choices when it comes to Taiwanese food around the Chicago land area and this place unfortunately just fell short. We ordered the beef tendon noodle soup, oyster pancake, fried tofu, vermicelli with intestines, basil squid, tea egg, Taiwanese noodles with pork and mushrooms, mango shaved ice, matcha waffles, matcha egg waffles, milk tea with bubbles and pudding, taro with bubbles, Okinawa with bubbles, and mango with bubbles. The best items there was the fried tofu, basil squid, Taiwanese noodles with pork and mushrooms, and mango shaved ice. The fried tofu alone was the highlight of the evening. It's supposed to be similar to the famous Taiwanese stinky tofu without the stink. The texture was great. The mango shaved ice was amazingly delicious and very refreshing. The Taiwanese noodles was okay and had some flavor. It wasn't authentic, but tasted okay. The beef tendon soup was okay, but not authentic at all. It didn't even come with the mustard greens. The oyster pancake only had two oysters and the oysters they used wasn't even right. The sauce was not authentic and the "pancake" itself was too chewy. The bubble drinks have got to be the worst I've ever had. The tea they used is wrong, which gives it a weird taste. You can barely taste any of the flavors added to the drink. It's like they don't want to use too much of the powders or fruit to bring out the flavor. The waffles and egg waffles was just alright. It wasn't to the point where I would drive an hour to come back to eat. Overall, the restaurant is edible. We heard from the server that the owner is from Hong Kong, but they have one Taiwanese chef. It sounded like it would have some redeeming qualities, but too bad it just wasn't worth the trip. Parking is very difficult unless you get there before 6pm. It has been almost ten (10) years since the last time I went back to Taiwan to visit my parents, brother, and relatives. I couldn't say I didn't miss this country I spent most of my childhood at, yet often times I felt nostalgic on the food I used to enjoy back home. "Taipei Cafe" on Halsted in Bridgeport didn't have outstanding reviews on Yelp. Most of them addressed the glitches on order accuracies and overall service. Hubby and I actually didn't experience any of these. Although the service was occasionally brisk (servers dropping off the plates and drinks and quickly left the table), everything we ordered was delivered in a timely manner. I rated each dish in category: "will re-order," "re-order with reservation," and "won't re-order." All prices listed were as of 05/07/2017. -- Will Re-order-- 1) popcorn chicken ($5.95): they were crispy and delicious. Unfortunately, it didn't come with the sauce that other Yelpers mentioned in their reviews. I dipped the pieces with the sauce that came with the braised trio platter and worked out just fine. 2) Taipei milk tea ($3.25): it was the regular size and contained no bubbles. The blend was well-done; the sweetness was spot-on. They didn't overload the cup with ice. I highly recommended on getting this. 3) crispy spiced chicken combo ($8.95): it came with rice and Taiwanese-style marinated eggs. Hubby ordered it and said it was great for those who wanted quick, work-break lunch. He added a small-sized Taiwanese bubble tea for an extra $2. --Re-order with reservation-- 1) oyster and pork intestine vermicelli ($5.95): I didn't see the black vinegar provided on the table. That was my usual habit growing up: adding a few drips of black vinegar to the bowl to enhance the flavor. The thickness was good, but the dish was rather forgettable. 2) squid I'm the thick broth ($3.95): I opted for the small size. The taste of "squid" was lacking. All I felt in my mouth was the garlic. --Won't Re-order-- 1) braised trio platter ($4.75): this platter included seaweed, eggs, and tofu. The concept of "braised" was certainly presented. However, they could definitely do better on the flavor profiles. 2) Taiwanese style kimchi ($2.95). It's very different from the Korean style kimchi we often see in an oriental market. It's tangy and highly-pickled. The cabbage didn't look too fresh to me. While I was extremely happy that a place like "Taipei Cafe" existed in Chicago, I had eaten at many amazing street joints in Taiwan and couldn't help but used "them" as the standard. I knew that my California self was missing something since moving to Chicago. I needed some lu rou fan quick, and it looked like the best place to go was nearby Taipei Cafe! My students shared with me that this was one of the better Taiwanese restaurants in the city. I can easily tell why too- portions are big and prices are low. I'm not a student anymore but I sure love a good deal especially when it's for some good food. On a Saturday evening, the restaurant got packed pretty quickly and most tables inside seat four. Try and keep it to a smaller group so you can get in quicker. For our dinner, we ordered a whole bunch of items including their Oyster Omelette, Taiwanese Sausages, Braised Pork over Rice, and their Spicy Beef Noodles. The oyster omelette was probably the best I've had since being in Taipei oh so long ago. Their braised pork was delicious and made me miss Asia with its beautiful flavors. Everything on our table was seriously amazing. When it came down to dessert, we couldn't help but order their matcha shaved snow. Yep, I said it- shaved snow in Chicago! Some of the workers called it "shaved ice," and my California self had to question their choice of words. We all know there's a huge difference. Nonetheless, it was indeed shaved snow and it was goood. Could've used some condensed milk, but it held its own alright. Great service, excellent food, and enough to go around for the entire family. I've had food from here on 2 occasions. Both times, I was a little unwhelmed. I'm adding a star because I forgot my purse at home and they didnt give me a hard time about paying. On my first visit, I came to study and brought my bag with no wallet in it. oops. ordered my food and drink popcorn chicken and a drink- $12. chicken was okay. drink was decent. but the staff was super sweet! anyway, I ordered from grub hub the second time, I had minced pork over noodles, 2 milk teas - $16 do not get this noodle dish unless you're prepping for a marathon. Its literally 16 ounces of noodles and 1 tablespoon of minced pork. the jasmine milk tea is delicious and the oolong could have been better. Overall, taipei is okay, but there are way too many options here to come back for these items i've tried. I enjoy the variety Taipei Cafe provides. Some items are very unique that this is the only restaurant in Chicago, such as Taiwanese snacks and rice balls. During this visit, my friend and I both ordered the hot pot. I ordered the Seafood Hot Pot ($19.95) and my friend ordered the Korean Kimchi hotpot ($19.95). We also got a Braised Trio Platter to shared ($7.25), as well as a Oolong Latte with Grass Jelly ($5 plus $.75 for topping). While I was reading the menu, I thought hot pot would have came with Stinky Tofu because it included the word stinky in its Chinese title. A little disappointed to learn that no stinky tofu is included, but nonetheless, hot pots were good. Portion was good, each hot pot came with a side rice. You could probably share a pot between 2 people. Seafood Hot pot had shrimp, scallop, crabmeat, mussel, tofu, enoki mushroom, squid, fish cake, fish ball, napa, green onion, cilantro, vermicelli, yamasa chikuwa. They presented it in a wok on flame, so you could taste it super hot and fresh. The broth was a little salty for my taste, but it paired very well with rice. I think it's worth getting on a rainy cold day! The Braised Platter came with seaweed, tofu, and egg. I enjoyed that they were served warm, but the flavor was a bit mild for my taste. Overall, I would not necessary recommend this dish. The Oolong Latte was good, nothing out of the ordinary. If you are craving for bubble tea, I think there are lots of other spots close in Chinatown. But for the convenience to accompany a meal, it would serve the purpose just fine. Service was a little slow at a weekday lunch. My cup was empty for half the meal until it was refilled again and we had to ask for server to get our both order and check. For a while, I was worried that every Taiwanese restaurant in the area would be gone (it seems that the ones around Chinatown were closing monthly and we actually had more in Evanston than near Chinatown). But fortunately, it seems that this and other regional specialty restaurants have been popping up over the last few months. As you might expect from any good Taiwanese restaurant -- the bubble teas and the snow desserts really shine here --- especially the snows. A lot of local restaurants will give you syrup with shaved ice or similar crushed ice concoction, but here they really do take the time to create thin delicate layers of snow infused with flavor. The noodle soups are also another signature dish you expect to be good at Taiwanese restaurants. The spicy beef noodle soup here for me is good, but not spectacular. The noodles are al dente, the beef is tender, and the both has a good body to it without being too spicy. However, there wasn't really any element that was particularly memorable it. The Dan Zai noodle soup has a good mix of shrimp and pork ball which created a nice broth, served with silky smooth noodles. Both are solid choices on a visit to this restaurant. Make sure you also try the braised pork over rice. The pork is tender with a flavorful sauce and is great to have on a cold winter day. The fried rice with Chinese BBQ sauce is also another great, unique preparation that is very flavorful and delights the senses. The shredded chicken over rice was okay for me. I've had preparations that were more flavorful with softer chicken, but it was still pretty good. The popcorn chicken was tender and didn't have too many spices/herbs, but I wasn't particularly fond of the batter used. Taiwanese cuisine might be lumped together with Chinese food, but that's a shame. Those in the know can tell you that it's similar, but really has its own identity. The spicy beef noodle soup is always a favorite of mine when I check out the few Taiwanese restaurants in Chicago, and Taipei Cafe is no different. They do a nice job of making a spicy, rich broth that opens up your pores, and the flour noodles are excellent at soaking up that wonderful flavor in the soup. Typical asian-restaurant thing happened with my main entree coming out before our appetizers, but eh. Just roll with it. The popcorn chicken was a nice treat, and I was surprised with the light sweetness I tasted. I was expecting something salty, but this was a welcome change of pace. Since I'm working backwards as it is, might as well talk about their milk tea drinks. I had the Okinawa pearl milk tea, which had a smoothness about it. Not overly sweet, but I think I'll ditch the tapioca next time. Just a tad too many for my liking. So glad to see more places like this opening up on Halsted on the South side. Ordered takeout here and decided to eat at the park across the street which was very window and had no public tables or seating but hey life's an adventure. If you decide to order on the spot and wait outside the wait time is relatively long ~20 mins. I would call ahead of time to pickup. Food (8/10): I'm Taiwanese American and have been to Taipei several times so I have some credibility (5/10). For my first time, I had to order one of the classics (pork over rice or pork chop bento). I went with the pork over rice. Also got the oyster omelette which is a dish I love to get when I visit Taiwan. The other classic I got was the popcorn chicken. Braised pork over rice bento (8/10): Ngl I was pleasantly surprised. The pork over rice was very good. I'd rate it an 8/10 in the context that we are in the US. The pickled vegetables side and classic tea egg were ok. Now, this next part confused me when I opened the box. The broccoli. I don't know if I've just been to the wrong places in Taiwan or what but I AINT NEVER seen no broccoli (it's a very American vegetable imo) with my pork over rice man. I stared at the broccoli and started to question the whole dish. I'll say I might've seen Chinese broccoli or bok choy in this dish before but... again my credibility is only 5/10 so I could be mistaken. I won't go off. It wasn't until I ate the pork and rice that I let it go. Nevertheless I would 10/10 order again. Oyster omelette (6/10): I wasn't expecting too much bc I know this dish can be a bit finicky and also this was takeout. I just wanted to reminisce with this one. Wouldn't necessarily order again unless I am nostalgic. Popcorn chicken (8/10): Also surprised by how good it was. Crispy on the outside and tender on the inside done right. Seasoning was good. Some pieces were a bit large if I'm comparing to the motherland but I'm not complaining. 10/10 would order again. Value (7/10): Fair and affordable pricing. I have no idea how they fry the breading so well, but I've been told it's similar to authentic Taiwanese fried chicken. I try not to eat too much fried food in one sitting, but I'll make an exception for the Popcorn Chicken app + Crispy BBQ Pork combo (as long as I can share the chicken with at least another person). I've also tried the Spicy Beef Noodle but thought it was just alright, and not spicy. Wasn't a fan of the Pig Ear with Garlic Sauce either, but maybe that's just because chewy meats aren't my thing. I'd go back and order more!! The Taiwanese spring rolls are a must try! They are fried in a tofu skin, and it was so tasty!!! The seafood hot pot was definitely worth it. It runs about $14.95, it had mussels, shrimp, octopus, fish balls, etc. When some restaurants make seafood dishes, they usually lack in the amount- this dish was very generous! The downside was their oyster omelette. It was not like how I've had in Taiwan. It needed more egg and less sweet rice flour. It needed less romaine lettuce too. The sauce also was just too sweet. I believe they might have tweaked this recipe to appeal to others a bit more. Lastly what really inspired me to write this review was their bathroom. Inside the women's bathroom, you will find a changing table. It had Huggies baby wipes and napkins to help with making it easy. I rarely see this in restaurants, especially near Chinatown. We ordered the Lu Rou Fan (braised pork over rice), Popcorn Chicken, Beef Noodle Soup, Ba Wan, Oyster Pancake, and Three Cup Chicken (called 'Basil Chicken' on the menu). My favorite was the Lu Rou Fan. The sauce was very flavorful and soaked into the rice perfectly, just the way it should be. The amount of meat was decent as I've seen other restaurants be much more stingy with the quantity. The popcorn chicken was crispy and tasty. My kids loved it so much that I only got a few pieces leftover for myself, but it came with quite a bit. I'm not a big fan of ba wan and oyster pancake, but my wife and brother didn't really think it was that great. They said the ba wan didn't have a great taste and the oyster pancake could have had more oysters. The basil chicken had way too many chopped up bones, which made it hard to eat. The taste was okay, but it didn't taste like classic 3-cup chicken (though I guess they didn't call it 3-cup chicken to begin with). On a side note, their milk tea is pretty good, so it's definitely worth a try. Instead I ordered the braised pork over rice and my boyfriend ordered the crispy spiced chicken with chili sauce rice box. The braised pork over rice came with broccoli, pickled vegetables, and an egg. The meat and pickled vegetables were great. The broccoli came out warm, almost cold and had no flavor. The egg also lacked flavor. I tried the crispy spiced chicken and it reminded me a tad of popcorn chicken. It was delicious! However, my guess would be that the egg and broccoli were similar to mine. I had a Taipei rice box which consisted of a crispy pork chop (you can choose from braised pork chop, crispy bbq pork, chicken leg, braised pork belly or crispy spiced chicken as well), steamed broccoli, a small portion of pickled vegetables, a tea egg, turnip soup and a large portion of rice. It could be shared by two people depending on how hungry you are. My friend got one for her two kids to share. (I don't think they finished it.) The pork chop was so good, VERY crispy on the outside and not greasy in the least. There are many other delicious items to choose from. I tried my friend's spicy beef noodle soup and it was outstanding. The noodles tasted homemade (I'm not sure if they were) and the beef was flavorful and tender. There is a HUGE tea selection--fruit teas, milk teas, fresh teas, tea with pearls...I'd definitely come back for some tea. The desserts also looked fabulous! In fact, it smelled like fresh waffle cones at one point while we were eating. The pictures of desserts looked elaborate, colorful, and quite large, so good for sharing. The restaurant was extremely clean and inviting. The service was excellent. The prices are reasonable. We were there around lunch time mid-week. I've dined at Taipei Cafe multiple times now, a few times for dinner and other times just for dessert. Food options are pretty good. Most items are on par with other Chinese restaurants in the area. I definitely recommend the popcorn chicken as an appetizer! This is a great place for dessert and boba. I have had two of the honey toast before, which is definitely shareable among friends (I wouldn't recommend it for a single person)! Once you eat the filling/toppings, you will be left with a lot of leftover bread as the ratio is a little uneven. Regardless, still delicious! I was told on the phone that my order would b ready in 15 min. 30 min later, I asked if my order was ready, only to be told "not yet". Total wait time was 45 min. Very good experience! I like the small dishes so much that I ordered five of them. Haha They are light and tasty but give u pretty of diversity. A taste of everything. The food is decent and the selection is good too- it offers drinks, normal food, and dessert options! The location is a little bit outside chinatown so harder to get to but still worth the effort because of the food. Should have gotten the bento option than the normal rice plate because i remembered it as better portion and taste but still good to try three different kinds of rice plates.
