This is a hole in the wall family owned food stall inside at the back of a small chinese mall that has ~5 different food stalls. We ordered Taiwanese pork chop with rice ($9) and chicken leg with rice ($8) dishes for takeout. The portions are relatively large for the prices of those dishes. Pork chops were huge, well seasoned with a mild sweetness umami flavor and very crispy. The chicken leg was marinated in a soy sauce flavor seasoning. Both were quite good. The dishes come with two different vegetable sides (bok choy and bean sprouts) along with minced pork, pickled mustard greens and half a soy sauce marinated egg. read more

Taipei Hong exists in a number of food courts all over Queens but I feel like the one on Roosevelt Avenue near the 7 train station is the best one. Located it the back of a dilapidated mini mall that has (or had) 2 other stalls, this place serves up great Taiwanese favorites at reasonable prices. The menu here is the usual stuff from Taiwanese stalls - pork chops, popcorn chicken, stinky tofu, sausages, etc. Their food though is really good and probably some of the best Taiwanese fare in Flushing. Their pork chop is crispy, seasoned well and tender. Their lu rou fan (pork rice) is also really tasty and not greasy. Veggies that come with the rice are also seasoned well and not overcooked. Portion sizes are really generous for the price and the staff here cares about the food as evidenced by them separating the fried items from the others so as to maintain crispiness. It was 10:20pm on Sunday and there weren't many small bites/appetizer type of places open during this late hour. I was gladly able to Yelp around and find this place. When my friend and I went into the food court, the employee was already closing the kitchen and taking out the trash. We were really sad until he asked us "what do we want to eat?" He told us he doesn't have rice anymore and we told him we just want snacks like popcorn chicken which they had. We were thrilled. These were the items we ordered that night: -Taiwanese popcorn chicken, super crispy, hot and tender! You can choose spicy level, but we just went with non-spicy. -Stinky tofu, one order was pretty big, had at least 10 pieces. The only concern I have was that it was not stinky enough! Need more fermentation. -Pig's intestine w/ garlic sauce, those intestines were drenched in sauce and topped off with sliced ginger and cilantro - just like what you will find at a nightmarket in taiwan. -Taiwanese sausage (sliced), it was great with garlic. -Mixed tempura, assorted with radish, fish cakes, etc. Being able to score all these freshly fried snacks really made our night and the guy was really nice. Taipei Hong is one of the best stalls in the small Chinese food court across from the Macy's department store. When you go inside, you have to walk all the way to the back. Taipei Hong sells Taiwanese favorites like Taiwanese popcorn chicken and pork chop over rice. The pork chop over rice is a must try. Really love this place, it's my go-to whenever I have a hard time deciding what to eat in Flushing. I usually get the pork chop over rice and an order of Taiwanese popcorn chicken. Wow! I'm so happy I found this place. Me and my sister was on a hunt for stinky tofu in new t. I would say this is the most authentic stinky tofu I've ever had. It was made crispy too. Come here only if you are very hungry I've been here three times and each time , the food portions are huge. Whenever I carry my order to go , it feels so heavy like I'm carrying a dumbbell. Total hidden Taiwanese grab-and-go quick-eats spot. The stall is straight ahead in the rear as you walk in. I had their pork belly with rice and Taiwanese burger (gua bao) during my last visit here. My first impression of the pork belly over rice was that it was a bit on the dry side. A little more of the meat sauce would've made it more delectable. If you're expecting small cut-up pieces of pork belly, you're in for a surprise. The slabs of pork were huge! There was also a generous side of pickled greens and vegetables as a palette cleanser to complement the fatty pork belly. Their gua bao was bigger than what I was accustomed to at Super Taste. There were mustard greens, pieces of cilantro, and pork belly all blanketed with a warm and fluffy bao. Overall, I had a pretty decent first experience here at Taipei Hong. I am more used to the traditional flavor of basil and salt, so was a little surprised and disappointed when this didn't have any of it. I came here because my friend recommended their Gua Bao (Taiwanese sandwich/burger). She told me it's authentic. I had the Gua Bao and dine in. There are some tables in the small food court so people need to secure their seats while waiting for the food. The Gua Bao is $2.99 each. There are peanut sugar, cilantro, & pork belly in the bun. The flavor and price are pretty good. They also gave me a glove so I can munch the Gua Bao with my hand. It did fixed my cravings for Taiwanese food but I with they could use the whole piece & thicker pork belly. The one I got had sever small & thin pieces of pork belly. Otherwise, everything was nice. This place is at the back of a very unassuming, almost hidden, food "court" across the street from the entrance to New World Mall. I had been here once before and was not impressed, but made a note to come back and had a much better meal here. I had already had lunch, but was waiting for a haircut, so came in here for a snack. Got their popcorn chicken, which was a larger portion than I was expecting. Each piece of chicken was multiple bites. The chicken was really tender and the breading was light and fried well. I love that this place asks you how spicy you want your chicken and tosses the freshly fried chicken in the spicy powder before serving it. I've always disliked when places make you sprinkle the powder on yourself and the result is one-sided flavor. Even though I told them I wanted it spicy, there wasn't much spicy powder. It was also lacking the nice salt and pepper seasoning that makes Taiwanese popcorn chicken great. Also had a gua bao, which I enjoyed more than the fried chicken. The bao bun was nice and soft. The pork belly inside was really flavorful and super tender. They were really generous with the pickled vegetables and the sugar/peanut mix. It's definitely one of the better gua bao I've had in New York (pales in comparison to what you can get in Southern California though). I'm still torn on this place. I usually call ahead and order here with no issues. Today I ordered over the phone again. When I got there, I had to wait an additional 20 minutes! When I tried to eat the fried rice today, I found a cockroach, yes, it's a cockroach. I don't know how to describe how I feel right now, I only ate few and I went to the bathroom and spit the rice. I used go there all the time to ordered popcorn chicken. I understand it's useless to call them and let them know cause Chinese restaurants always do that, they won't admit it. UPDATE: 20 days after I discovered this place, I've been back every week ... A little tip: I love eating spicy food but I find that the medium spicy is JUST right. I got the highest level of spice last week and it was TOOOO SPICY. Couldn't stop sniffling and the burn in my mouth was torture. 11/19/17 I'm so happy I found this gem!! It's in a mini food court, alllll the way in the back. Don't get it mixed up with all the other popcorn chicken joints at the front of the establishment. The employees are nice. Speaks English fluently and very polite. If you wish to stay to have a quick meal, you can but it's based on availability. Popcorn chicken is $4.99 for just the chicken, $7.99 with rice. They ask for the level of spice!! This was never an option at all the other popcorn chicken places in Flushing. I got medium spice but I think I might want to try hot next time. The medium spice lingers in your mouth, but it's barely there. It left my mouth feeling "chilly" if that makes any sense. It's fried to perfection and it makes an amazing snack. I've been told by my Taiwanese friend that real popcorn chix doesn't require that spicy mayo sauce. This definitely holds true for Taipei Hong's pop chix!! No sauce required! Five stars for the Gua Bao. The slightly sweet powdered peanut sprinkled over the tender pork belly and extra-soft bao is a perfect finish for a wonderfully composed dish. Everything else, 3 stars. The large intestines soup was just okay. It was lacking in fullness of flavor. The pork belly in the rice dish was not cooked long enough to get translucent. It made the fatty part of it a little unappetizing. They had stinky tofu. It wasn't stinky enough or fried well enough to be memorable. Best way to enjoy this joint, hop off the 7 train at Main station (up the long escalators on the north side) and duck into this food court area to just buy 4 gua bao's at $3 each to start off your food tour. A true gem in a pile of other debris! We had the fish mala noodle soup, extra spicy. This masterpiece was filled with a flavorful broth, noodles, cabbage, gai lon, and fish fillets underneath a slick of hot pepper chili oil. This stuff was hot. Really hot. My lips turned red. My brow beaded up with sweat. Endorphins were frolicking. The lady at the counter watched me intently as I slurped my first few tastes and my face flushed over. I returned her gaze and gave her a big smile and a thumbs up. She echoed it back and then went about her work. Super good, authentic stuff here. My partner had the stinky tofu, which I can't even touch, and he said it was fantastic. Stinky tofu? Fantastic? Entirely possible if you're into it. In a maneuver roughly equivalent to wedging your way past those individuals who are very committed to their spots near the doors on a crowded train... tunnel through the crowd of bubble tea and Xi'an lamb seekers by the Chatime storefront, all the way to the end of the space. Instead of grumpy morning commuters wearing too much cologne, instead you'll uncover... great Taiwanese food! The xiao jiao niu (chili pepper beef) noodle soup is possibly worth the trip alone. So spicy! I've never had it quite like this before. The clear, clean broth is littered with chilis, onion, and thin-sliced beef instead of strips. The soup packs a beautiful, dry heat. In Taiwan, each roadside stand selling fried snacks has their proprietary salt and pepper spice mix, and everyone's got their own opinion as to whose is the best. The salt and pepper mix that Taipei Hong uses is pretty close to my favorites in Taiwan. Get yourself a greasy ol' pork chop and try it out. I hear they do a good salt and pepper chicken cutlet, too... but I doubt Two Peck Chicken next door (http://www.yelp.com/biz/two-peck-crispy-chicken-flushing) would be pleased. The beef noodle soup was surprisingly not all there - good, but tasted like normal beef broth. Nothing made it particularly Taiwanese. The "Taiwanese Dishes" section of the menu is chock full of typical Taiwanese snacks to brag about having consumed: pig intestine, chicken feet, stinky tofu, Taiwanese black pudding (a cake of pig's blood mixed with rice). Portions are large. Prices are cheap - this is a dumpy food mall deal, after all. There's dumpy food mall seating available. If you get a Taiwanese bento-style dish, they even put ba-suh (Taiwanese minced meat) over the rice and include other goodies like a little slice of omelette, veggies, and Taiwanese sausage. $6 for a huge chicken leg or pork chop over rice = yessss. Taipei Hong's stall really marks the success of the mini-food mall that's evolved in the Chatime building, especially after the quick disappearances of multiple other businesses that came before. The food is so delicious and non-fussy that I find myself wanting to grab something here all the time. Bah on the New World Mall Food Court across the street! Mala XiangGuo - this is the stir-fried malatang in a pot, dry. Taipei Hong style is "thick n juicy". Thick spam, bowtie seaweed, sliced lotus root. I pointed out the thickness because these babies soak up the sauce REAL good and come out super flavorful. Now the juicy - TongHao veggies, firm tofu, and fried tofu. The tofu are really must-haves if you don't have a soy problem. Excellent consistency and pack such satisfying bites. TongHao might be an acquired taste for some, but it makes my inner Taiwanese happy ^_^ Mala Tang - this is the soup stew plus 13 different hot pot ingredients, and the reason why I've quit hot pot for good. When I brought my coworker here (malatang enthusiast; tried many places in Flushing), she claimed they have the best vermicelli and soup base. She was so addicted that she asked to return the same week to get her fix. The spice and seasoning used here are different from other malatang joints, so yes, it's a different spin on the classic Chinese dish. Whatever the magic dust is, it's gotten us talking about the taste nonstop while eating and making all kinds of foodgasm faces. Came again for a second round of Taiwanese food hopping. Their Taiwanese Popcorn Chicken is back (鹽酥雞). You can order it as a side or over rice, and again adjust the spice level. We also ordered the Pork Belly over Rice and Taiwanese Beef Noodles soup. The pork belly they use here is leaner and not stewed as long. Still great flavor, but don't expect the melt in your mouth, super tender, fatty kind. All of their rice items are bentos, which comes with rice, braised minced pork (滷肉), Chinese mustard greens (酸菜), Chinese sausage, egg, and vegetables. The Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup was decent. The beef was on the thinner side, instead of the large juicy, fatty chunks that I am used to, but the soup was nice enough. Still doesn't compare to anything in Taiwan. How do they do it :*(? They are still in Flushing and moved to a new location across the street from Macys on Roosevelt Ave. If you know the Chai Time bubble tea place on Roosevelt Ave., they are located all the way inside the store. The food is still fabulous. They still have my favorite Taiwanese Fried Chicken. They also have a new menu with new dishes. They now have STINKY TOFU. Yup Yup! Finally reopened and was able to try it twice. I had been scouting the previous location which was supposed to be a food court but I would have to say that location was pretty dingy and dark looking. Like a place where bad things happen and its so dark that you cannot tell what you are eating. Always a bad sign. Another bad sign was that the food court had been closed by the DOH. Yikes! Still this place had good reviews so when I saw it reopened on Roosevelt I had to give it a shot. I came during opening week and they had a promotion that if you spend more than $10.00 you can get free fried chicken chunk and for $1.00 you can get a tofu appetizer. I came for the pork chop rice and they were sold out (sob). I ended up getting the chicken leg over rice and a beef with tomato dish over rice. Turns out the chicken chunk was also sold out (double sob). So she said she would give me the tofu appetizer for free (win!). Fried chicken leg was good but I was looking forward to the pork chop. It comes with 2 types of veggies and rice with meat sauce. The beef and tomato was decent but there was not a lot of sauce. They gave me a ton of rice though I would have to say at least two and half bowls. I guess they put it in the takeout container for the soup and the container was pretty deep so I ate a lot of it and saved the rest for another day. The beef was surprisingly tender and tasted more like beef stew beef. The tofu was good as an appetizer it had garlic and cilantro and I was able to eat it with my huge bowl of rice. Second time I came I finally got the fried pork chop rice. I had to come in the daytime around lunch to make sure they didn't run out again. Very crispy pork chop and it was a pretty good portion two huge chops deep fried and very simple salt and pepper seasoning. They had put it in a separate paper sleeve so that it stays crisp and soaks up the oil. It comes with two types of veggies once again with some cabbage and mushroom and wood ear mushroom cooked in fat it seems like and chopped string beans in a spicy ginger and black bean sauce. I like veggies so this was nice. and It also came with a thin triangular slice of omelet which is their substitution of a traditional tea egg. The rice comes topped with the signature taiwanese meat sauce. I have had better and this one was a little bland not enough sauce but its fine because it wasn't salty or anything and adds flavor to the rice. Took me two days to eat this for lunch because the pork chop was huge. I will definitely be back if I am in the mood for a pork chop rice since the price is fairly cheap and its very convenient for me. You have to find their stall all the way in the back. Its in the same location as the cha time on Roosevelt Avenue and they share a counter with Laoma Malatang. They have a few seats in the back to eat there but it is not the kind of place to bring a crowd.
