I was definitely very pleased with the food and service provided at this location. The waiter was very helpful in selecting our dishes that could accommodate needs in our party (I.e. Vegetarian). In addition I found that the goat curry was very delicious and the basmati rice was well cooked to accompany our meal. Man, who would've thought that some of the best Indian cuisine could be found in Dothan, AL? This isn't a joke though, the food really is that good here. I lived in India for several months so I'm pretty familiar with the northwestern style. Not really sure what style they serve here but it's delicious. The portions are generous and the spice is pretty much on point. True to traditional Indian style, they also have a large variety of vegetarian items on the menu. Try the Baingan Bhartha or Aloo Gobi for the vegetarian type and the standard Chicken Tika Masala for the Carnivores. There are plenty of seats in both the lounge and the restaurant. Though it's far from THE Taj Mahal, for Dothan AL it's not too bad. They play a pretty sweet selection of Baliwood videos as well. Don't worry, Alabama or Auburn will be on the big screen on game day. My only gripe is that they didn't have any of the Indian Beers! If only they had Kingfisher beers at the bar, this place would get 5-star. read more

From my first 2 visits: the falafel sandwich was delicious, the veg/paneer tiki masala pretty good, the garlic naan tasty, and the tamarind old fashioned was interesting and yummy. $9 meals at lunch, $12 at dinner, and they do not offer combo options. They charged me an extra $3 to put both paneer and "mixed vegetables" (peas) in my veg tiki masala, making it a whopping 15.99 (absurd) so I decided to check out the Sunday buffet to try out different dishes before committing in the future. The buffet was a huge disappointment. Apparently they used to include international foods on their menu and they're sticking with that for the buffet. My chosen vegetarian options included chow mein (greasy, lesser than), fried rice (fine), dahl (good), tostones (tasteless, hard), fried plantains (good), and cheese ravioli (good but very salty). I could've added an odd looking not-Indian broccoli dish, salad, and maybe the broccoli soup but the waiter I asked didn't know if it was vegetarian. They had other carnivorous options that included taquitos and gyros and chicken several different ways. Why in the world they don't stick to what they do best (Indian and Mediterranean food), I do not know. These are not dishes that go well together. Then I discovered my plate of picked over oddities cost $15! If they would focus on the Indian dishes and add some combination options, many more people would eat there. I can't justify spending so much for their individual vegetable dishes until I've had a chance to see if I even like them, and who wants to eat a plate of just baba ganouj or just hummus? We'll go back in a group and eat family style and I suspect their Indian dishes will all be good. But that buffet is just insane. read more

This is quite possibly the best Indian food I've had in America. My fiancée and I stopped by on a whim. The inside decor is very pleasant and homey. The wait staff is very courteous. We ordered the lamb shish kabob (#50), chicken tandoori (#49), and spinach with chickpeas (#116). Two sizzling plates arrived with rice and a pot of the vegetable dish. The meats were cooked to perfection and were served abed perfectly seasoned onions, green peppers, and cabbage. The tandoori was saucier than the typical dry-rub I've had at other places. The flavor was absolutely superb. Our favorite dish was the spinach with chickpeas. The texture was rich and silky, with an orgasmic buttery flavor. If I were not on a low carb diet, I would have tried one of the 20 or so flavors of naan they had on the menu. I highly recommend this restaurant, even for the pickiest foodie or international food connoisseur. read more

I tend to find myself at Taj during weird food times, like 3 or 4pm. The fact that there's always other diners there, even at the weird in-between times, is due to the food being so utterly addictive. This is a destination. Is it the ambiance? Yes and no. It's sort of dark and the menus are unsurprisingly ancient, but that's part of the charm. Is it the service? They're super friendly, so yes. But it's really about the food here: big shareable portions of the sauciest, zestiest, spiciest medleys I have found in Southeast Alabama. Thank you for existing, Taj! Long may you stand. read more

The food is decent but it took us at least an hour to get our food... the seating is terrible, we asked them for a table for 3 & they gave us a table for 2 & didn't even offer a third chair for my son, I was like do they expect us to hold our 5 year old son on our lap as we eat? SMH read more

Overall, amazing and authentic food! The naan however is more like a chapati or paratha, not like what a thicker and bubbly naan should be. 3 stars because they need to improve on their portion size. After paying for the $14 dinner entree (which was delicious!) I was leaving hungry... That should not be happening! Hopefully they can address this, lot of potential here. read more

I was there last evening and ordered my favorite, a lamb gyro spiced to ten with basmati rice on the side. It did not disappoint. I've ordered from this place many times and every time it's delicious, and the staff are very courteous. Well, my compliments to the chef last night! My gyro was perfectly spiced and stuffed full of flavorful meat and crisp tender veggies on a piping hot naan bread. Mmmmm...i can't wait to go again. But i was studying the menu and decided i have got to try some of the other dishes there for sure! read more

The food was outstanding... The server however blew my mind. He brought me a $57 tab so i put $80 so i could leave a fair tip. After sitting at the table waiting for my change and watching him pass 3 times i finally went to the counter to confront him. He really put on a show and acted as though i was in the wrong. I was given my change finally and left without tipping a penny. I spoke to the manager an she offered me %15 off my next visit... The lunch specials are a great deal. Just make sure if you want any real twang, you must get a 9 or 10 spice. Me? I got a level 10 and still want more heat. I personally like my curry in a bowl with lots of coconut milk and pepper. Yak is a rice, meat and bread traditional. Honestly I could go for a much more refined flavor, but if you're on a budget, this will touch your bases. My main advice would be to call and check in the drink specials and make sure your wait staff understands them to best enjoy a quiet lunch with friends. read more

Pretty good Indian food. Drink specials every night for happy hour. Only complaint could be spice level is a touch on the lame side. If we order an 8 out of 10 my eyes should be watering and nose should be running. Instead it was just what I would consider a medium spice heat level. But the samosas were really good, maybe the best we've had in years. Vindalu chicken had good flavor (spice not hot enough). Masala vegetable dish was great, just weird looking with a bright red hue. I have eaten at Indian Restaurants all over the south and Midwest and stopped by this place while I was in town visiting because I was perplexed by the idea of a Greek/Indian/Italian/BBQ restaurant. I figured they would do one of them well and with five people with varying tastes in food, it seemed a good fit. I will say this: Taj is hands down the single best Indian restaurant I have ever had. For something of this caliber to be found in small town, Deep South Alabama was quite a surprise. I even gave my compliments to the chef after our meal - something I have NEVER felt compelled to do before. I will be in town for three more days and I fully expect I will dine here at least once each of those days. Amazing! I had the Palak Chole (vegan) and like another reviewer stated, it was absolute perfection. I recommend this dish and this restaurant to everyone. read more

We found this restaurant on one of our trip to Panama City (from Atlanta). Coming from city like Atlanta, where you can find a good number of decent Indian restaurants, we were not expecting much. However, this seemed right stop from distance perspective, (kind of in middle of Atlanta and Panama City) for dinner. We were so delighted that we made a stop here for awesome dinner, and refreshing ambiance. They had great service, waiters were nice, food was good, suggestions were awesome. We ordered Dal Makhani, Paneer Bhurji, Eggplant Bharta, Dal Tadka, Garlic Naan, Bullet Naan. Panner Bhurji and Eggplant Bharta were "the best". I never found so tasty Eggplant Bharta in Atlanta or restaurants in India. The smoky taste was mouthwatering. I would say if you are anywhere near Dothan AL, do try this restaurant. read more

Never ever order the gyro... It is not your traditional Greek gyro. There is a faulty red sauce that drowns the meat and makes the bread soggy. It tastes terrible! They ask you what spice level you want. If you get medium, your mouth will burn. I know some Indian food is hot, but this was supposed to be Greek and I'm honestly confused as to why there is a spice level option at all. The carry out service is terrible. Being new to Indian food, I didn't know how to pronounce naan. The woman behind the counter snickered and laughed at me! She looked like a high school student and couldn't have been more disrespectful. She must have been dating the waiter that followed her around like a lost puppy... Because he seemed annoyed every time someone entered the restaurant and interrupted their quality time. I will not be back. The Taj is over hyped. The food was decent, the menu is pretty confusing, luckily I have been to India and was able to explain a few menu items to my friends. The service was terrible, the waiter seemed like he was confused the whole time, had no personality. The waiter improperly placed dishes on the table so it seemed as though one of my friends didn't get there dish, not being from India she had no idea what her dish looked like. Hands down, my favorite restaurant in the Dothan area, and one of my favorite restaurants period. The Indian food is fantastic. For first timers, the wait staff will walk you through the menu and help you find something you'll like. You can customize the level of spiciness to your own tastes. After a few trips you'll get more adventurous each time. Atmosphere is really nice. Very relaxing, with a nice dining area, a comfortable lounge, and a pleasant patio. Great restaurant! My wife and I stopped in for a vegan lunch. We ordered the vegetable biryani and the malai kofta. We got them at a level 3 for spiciness. We also had a side of Roti bread. This was an excellent lunch choice. Great atmosphere, great staff, and delicious food. We will check out the grocery store before we leave to grab some spices! read more
