Unfortunately, the packaging was not great and a lot of the food leaked. The food was still edible and they were generous with their rice portions. Flavor is good, not very spicy for the curries. The food here was really good! Lots of great meat, vegetarian, and fish options. I got the vegetable vindaloo & my partner got some vegetable curry. My vindaloo was strong on the tomatoes, and had that sharp, spicy taste that vindaloo is known for. We also got garlic naan to dip into the vindaloo. My partner's curry had a nice assortment of vegetables, and his only complaint is that the veggies tasted like frozen veggies. My favorite thing here was the garlic naan & raita dip. Came here after a trip to Dyker Heights Xmas Lights. Was in the mood for Indian food and knew that as we got closer to Bay Ridge, there were supposed to be really good options. The first thing that stood out right away was the table settings and general vibe of the indoor area. It reminded me so much of the Indian restaurants I used to go to in central Jersey, though it was missing the little station with the fennel seeds and hard candy to really sell it. They do provide the proper papad and chutney starter though, which is always mandatory. Next, service was also more or less what you expect from an Indian restaurant - the wait staff were not overly gregarious but everything was served on time . They even gave us a free appetizer and free dessert! I'm unsure if that was purely because it's the holidays or because they always do that, but it was definitely nice. As far as the food itself, I enjoyed everything we got but was not quite blown away with anything. I thought the bhaji had a nice crunch but tasted a bit bland, the chutneys were both a bit watery and low in flavor, and the garlic naan was less garlicky than I would have liked. The curries we got, chicken kashmiri and paneer tikka masala, were both quite good though. I do think their ingredient ratios for the tikka masala could be fixed a bit. It was darker in color, more spicy and less creamy than usual, though still very tasty. I think if this was the version developed in the UK it never would have caught on with British folks . For the chicken Kashmiri, I'll be honest I've never had it before. I only got it because I wanted Kashmiri gosht but my girlfriend does not eat goat. Turns out it is something completely different, a yellow curry with bananas instead of the dark reddish brown curry I was expecting. However, it is actually super good so this turned out to be a lucky mistake! If anyone has a friend who simply cannot do spicy food but you are tired of them ordering the same butter or saag curry every time, have them try chicken Kashmiri. Overall still a very solid experience. It is extremely creamy and flavorful, and each bite accompanied by rice and a sip of lassi is heavenly. The prices are affordable but competitive. This has been our go-to for Indian in Bay Ridge for many years. Problem is that, like many neighborhood restaurants, they have prioritized outgoing orders due to the rise of Uber Eats and such. Took my family there to celebrate my son's birthday and it basically felt like we were sitting in the middle of a takeout joint. Service was slow and the steady march of delivery drivers picking up orders ruined the ambiance. Food is still good, and we may consider ordering through the apps...but we won't be going back. The waiter couldn't explain the karahi very well so I'd recommend reading the menu in advance to get a general idea of what you'd want to eat. My family (sister-in-law & her family) ordered for lunch which came with free papadum (and the sauces/pickled onions). For a minute I scared myself thinking I ate rat meat (I'm just paranoid as I don't eat cubed or chopped chicken often) because I bit into a piece of hard rubbery chicken. My other sister-in-law also had the same dish and also said the chicken was too hard. Sauce is great with rice but not a fan of the chicken. While in the vicinity prior to getting my hair cut, I decided to have a small bite at Taj Mahal. And I'm glad I did. The only patron for lunch at 1 p.m., I felt enchanted by the overwhelming decor of everything red (and gold) once I entered. It is especially festive if you're dining with a group. The space was large, the menu diverse but I didn't have too much time to view it all. I wanted to keep it simple. Service was a bit lackluster and matter of fact from the staff. In other words, no small talk about the dishes or enthusiastic recommendations. No worries because I'm pretty well versed with Northern Indian food. Once seated, i was served papadam with the trio of chutneys. I decided to pass on anything deep fried and chose the Kati Chicken Poori appetizer at $6.95. To accompany my meal, I craved a Mango Lassi since it was sizzling outside in terms of the weather. The latter was a mistake because although I LOVE mango lassi, it spoiled my appetite. The Kati Chicken Poori arrived minutes after my beverage looking too pretty to eat. As i punctured the bread and the steam blew in my face, the overall aroma was divine. A slight disappointment was that the dish was mild. No spicy kick.. Yes, this Caucasian girl likes her food spicy. But not here. The overall flavors of the chicken and bread were very good. The bread tasted buttery (it was fried but not oily) and the chicken was cooked just right. I won't hold the lack of spiciness against them because I will definitely return again to have a proper meal. Taj Mahal is a solid go to Indian fix that will please most patrons particularly those who prefer their food mild. I'll have to return and update my current opinion. A true authentic Indian cuisine restaurant! I rarely ever try Indian cuisine, but after this restaurant, I will DEFINITELY come back for more. For one thing, the interior of this place is beautiful! It truly makes me feel as if I'm INSIDE the Taj Mahal. It adds onto the authentic vibe of the establishment. This establishment gave free Papad (bread) and free dipping sauces on the side in the beginning, and free Firni (rice pudding) at the end. They were both absolutely delicious. I ordered the Shahjahani Biryani and the Chicken Shree Mangal and they tasted really good. I really liked the Biryani and the curry chicken. I love how unique and nontraditional this Indian restaurant is. We went with the usual ataples and they seem special, as a post to cliché tastes associated with this cuisine. It tasted better when adding the spicy green sauce on the table 2) Vegetable samosas: so yummy and not oily at all! It comes 2 per serving, so we got 2 orders 3) Fried eggplant fritters: These were ok, nothing special. We had to add the green sauce to add some flavor to it. Wouldn't get again 4) Chicken Tikka Masala: very good, and the sauce tasted amazing poured onto the basmati rice and garlic naan 5) Okra in curry sauce: This was actually our favorite dish! The okra was cooked perfectly 6) Mixed biryani: I wouldn't get this again. It tasted like regular rice, with not enough spices in it even though they claimed to have "20 spices" within the dish. Came here again and the experience was completely different. I ordered for take out and they told me it would take 20mins so I took a walk and came back 20mins later and they told me 10 more mins. I told them sure I'll be outside when it's ready and what do you know, 15mins later it's not ready so I called again and he said just 2-3 more minutes. At this point I'm still waiting outside with my poor dog that is starting to shiver from the cold I waited another 15 mins and called back which they put me on hold and eventually hung up on me. All in all, I waited almost an hour when they originally told me 20 minutes. I know restaurants can get busy but what was disappointing was that they couldn't be more upfront from the start and kept leading me on to wait with an inaccurate time every time I checked in. Once they hung up on me because they realized they couldn't possibly give me another time to wait that was when I realized I am never going to come back to this place. That and also after I finally bought my food back home it wasn't as good as I remembered. They gave me my mango lassi in a bodega coffee cup and the assorted apps I ordered is nothing but some dry up fried dough in different shapes that has no taste. The packaging and taste is thoughtless and effortless, they wrapped my app with some foil and crumbled it up into a ball. This place certainly doesn't disappoint on those fronts. On this occasion I picked up to go & hoped for the best as I had a 20 minute trip back home. The great thing about this place is that they offered a butter chicken briyani, which is not a combination I've seen or tried before. I am a bit biased when it comes to Briyani, as I prefer the Hyderbad versions, but this version was really good. The spices weren't as heavy & the garnishes paired well. I was really missing the raita that I usually get with briyani. I'm not sure if this place usually offers it or they just forgot to include. The other sauces that were included were certainly good. came for dinner today. overall score i would say is a 3.5 food - solid indian food. we got the meat samosas and those were delicious. well flavored and good crunch. the shish kebabs were on the dry side but flavor was good. for the entrees we got chicken tikka masala and shrimp tandoori masala both were good. our friends got some other things but honestly everything really tasted the same in the same tomato based sauce. we haven't came here for awhile but could def say that back then it was more pungent and spicy this seemed like a very basic indian flavors. garlic naan was good of course. my biggest issue was the service to be honest. waiters were attentive in providing us water. but we legit asked 3 times for our sodas and mango lassi we ordered. we waited a long time for our food as well.. like almost 30min... there was maybe only 2 other tables which were just 2 ppl tables.. it just seemed way too long. i mean overall we would come again cus the food is fine but don't expect good customer service read more

We ordered saag paneer and chicken tikka masala from here tonight and it just visually was so disgusting, I couldn't eat it and ended up ordering from another place. I took pictures of the dishes from the two different places, but am only posting pictures of the (epic fail) dishes from Taj. First of all, the packaging here is cheap (tins with cardboard lids that had all caved in and spilled/splashed all over the inside of the bag), resulting in the curry dying my countertops while unpacking everything. Secondly, both dishes were just caked in oil. It looked like puddles of brown mud; you can literally see the oil caked up against the sides of the dish. Such a far cry from the bright colors you expect to see in an Indian dish (which the other place we ordered from did deliver on). I used to be a regular here for more than a decade. Went there about 3 years ago and was extremely disappointed with the food. Was in the neighborhood yesterday and figured I would give them another chance and the only way I could explain my experience was as friendly as the staff was, the food was so bland I cannot even describe it to you. The chicken tikka tasted like watered down boiled chicken and literally had no flavor to it whatsoever. The matar paneer (cheese) was also tasteless simply bland as well as the sauce I hate writing negative reviews but I absolutely will not be going back to this restaurant ever again. When it comes to Indian food in Bay Ridge, only one name comes to mind, Taj Mahal. Don't even bother with anyone else. Year after year I come here and my experience is always the same: Stellar! I love everything about this place, the friendly staff, the music, the food and the overfilled glasses of wine. The vegetarian dishes are all solid: Aloo Palak, Channa Saag and Channa Masala being my favorite. If you like meat, I love the chicken Tikka and the Lamb Madras.
