2.5 Stars Came here because it was within walking distance from my house, so decided what the hey, might as well try and support local. The "Deep Fried Scallop Roll"-- not what i expected palate wise. It neither tasted like scallop nor was it rolled well enough to hold together. The "Cream Cheese Roll"-- tasted just like the deep fried scallop roll except it had salmon in it, which did not taste as fresh as I hoped for. The "Take Sashimi Box"-- you would think since their name is on it, it would be their signature dish, but it was just okay. Nothing to rave about, nothing to be disappointed about either. The sashimi was normal sized in cutting, and tasted acceptable in freshness. The included served steamed rice was a little bit unusual. It's like, "you want some rice to go with your sushi?". For $8.50, would I order it again? Probably not. Miso soup-- You can rate a "sushi" restaurant just by tasting the miso soup. Traditionally it is not supposed to taste as salty as the ocean itself... This is one of my favourite sushi restaurants. Tried Take Sushi for the first time the other day and we will definitely be coming back. Our waitress was very friendly and she was able to accommodate us very well. Food was hot and tasted fresh when it got to the table. Definitely recommend this restaurant. read more

Dropped by here today again, and I certainly enjoyed it a lot more than my last experience. Staff were prompt and friendly. Food came out fast, and was so good! The salmon teritaki bento I got was huge, an excellent deal for $15. I could barely even finish it haha. My only complaint is that the tuna sashimi could have been fresher. Does one's Yelp review count if you ordered food to go? Anyway, dropped in to grab some nosh before class this evening. Had a hankering for something deep-fried and yummy. Ordered the avocado roll, the yam tempura roll and a small order of the vegetable tempura. The server and the two sushi chefs at the front were extremely friendly and polite and all three made sure to ask if I needed anything, even though I was just ordering off the menu for takeout. It was a pleasant surprise to be so nicely taken care of. I ate on the run, but my small meal was great! The tempura was piping hot and delicious. Huge pieces too, which, again, was nice to notice. Hmm, I didn't have a good experience here. The salmon was slimy - meaning it's not fresh and it sure didn't taste fresh. I'm sushi-freak and their rolls didn't spark me. Over priced in my opinion - mind you I usually only go to restaurants that offer good food and cheap prices. Their so called alaska roll was really sad - sushi town which is only a five minute drive away tastes way better and is cheaper! I doubt that I'll come back. But after going to sushi town more and more, I just cant get myself to pay so much more for sushi at Take. So I used to come here when it was a different sushi place. Since I was hanging out with my friend on the Heights, she suggested we go here. I haven't been here (this place, not this restaurant) in almost a decade. Seriously, a decade. I am not sure if they are the same owners, but this place seems to have gone through a huge upgrade. Their a la carte menu is huge, but their meal options are small. Their prices are reasonable though and they have a Specials Menu above the sushi bar. Both my friend and I got the Beef Teriyaki meal ($8.95). It came with miso soup, tempura, rice, teriyaki and a california roll. Yum yum. This place is awesome. The soup was very good. The pieces of seaweed in the soup were big enough so that I could avoid them. The tempura was two prawns, a yam, a squash and a carrot. Their batter is really light and crunchy. Their teriyaki is good. It sits on a bed of onions and bean sprouts. The roll was good. It stayed intact from the plate to my mouth. They were very nice. The restaurant was busy too. We had to wait ten or fifteen minutes. They came around a couple times and refilled the teas. If I am ever in the area, I might come here again. read more

I ate here before watching a movie across the street (Dolphin Cinema). I ordered the Teriyaki combo and it included beef teriyaki (or chicken), tempuras (yam, shrimp, squash), California rolls, and rice! The presentation was great, and it is such good value for less than $10. The food was delicious and satisfying. The service was polite, and efficient. Just a quick dinner review. The teriyaki (chicken or beef) bento box was filling. It came with miso soup, rice, veggies, tempura (veggies and 2 prawn), and california roll. Forgot what the dinner price was but it was definitely worth it. My only problem was that the food took awhile to come out and service seemed a bit slow. I like the places where they constantly come around to fill your tea or water rather than waiting for you to ask. I'd still try this place one more time. Gave it 3 stars because of the service. I came here as was visiting a friend for a joint project we are working on so decided to grab a quick bite to eat for lunch before diving into work. The decor is nothing special, just your typical sushi joint. The reviews were good so I decided to walk in and judge for myself. I ordered one of the lunch special and one of their signature rolls. Like any sushi place in North Burnaby, it tends to be basic and conventional. I do know for a fact that this place is ran by someone that one of my friend's mother knows. So he was willing to give bigger pieces of sushi. However, quantity does not equal quality. It tasted like fresh sushi from your typical T & T. You could basically come to this restaurant when you are finishing your workout and need a quick protein boost, but there are better choices out here on the heights. read more

Had the sunshine roll (delicious after removing the smoked salmon that overpowered the other flavors), negitoro maki (substantial amount of fish unlike many other places but also more expensive at $4), saba battera (really good), tuna & avocado roll, salmon & avocado roll. We had a few mixups with the battera that take a star off: first our waitress brought us a smoked salmon battera and was convinced that's what we ordered until another table claimed it. Then she came to confirm that we wanted the salmon battera, and when corrected she apologized and asked us to eat the salmon. We tried it, but it's filled with cream cheese (which I cannot eat with fish) so we sent it back. In the end we got our saba, it was wonderful, tried a bite of something new, and she wasn't hostile, so I'd give this place another shot. Aside from the service, another problem is that most of their special rolls contain smoked salmon and I hate smoked salmon. I certainly cannot hold that against Take Sushi, but it limits my options. The sunshine roll is better without it according to the other diner who likes smoked salmon, so next time I'll try getting it omitted. $37 for two people. (nothing was comp'ed.) read more

To date we have not yet had anything we did not like; there are some better than others, but on a grand scale, everything has been fabulous! Today we started with some of the Edamame which was not too soggy and salted just right (my tongue did not sting). After that came a Negitoro Temaki was quite tasty as well! Our main consisted of Hamachi, Salmon, and Tuna Sashimi which was absolutely delightful. It was very fresh and not frozen at all (my biggest pet peeve with Tuna in this city!) We also tried the Mermaid Roll which was a treat! It was warm inside which contracted nicely with the cool seafood outside and a delicious and tangy sauce. I would highly recommend this restaurant to any who want to try for the first time. For those of you coming again, you already know this is the best Sushi restaurant in Burnaby. read more

I've been going here for years, and it's honestly one of the best sushi places anywhere. Everything tastes SOOO good. The chef's are all super talented. I have yet to find a place that makes BC Rolls that taste half as good. The owner is also super friendly, my sister loves entering just so that he will greet her. My only problem these past few years has been the service. I know it must be stressful working in a busy restaurant, but the girls always act so disinterested. The owner is also the sushi chef here as you'll always be greeted by him as you come in. The interesting thing about him is that he immigrated to Canada from China as a young teenager and shortly began working in Japanese restaurants. So he had been trained by Japanese chefs for quite a long time before he started his own sushi restaurant. He prides himself on the quality and service of the whole restaurant. While he is usually busy behind the sushi bar with the raw fish and rolls, he uses his vantage point to ensure the servers are properly tending to each table and lets them know if a table needs something. He'll even take orders from the sushi bar if the server is busy in the kitchen! I like to see what's on his blackboard for fresh specials and get his take on it. He's very honest to say exactly how fresh the item is. My favourite part of eating at a sushi restaurant is eating at the sushi bar, but at this restaurant, I can have that experience without sitting at the bar! read more

It's good quality fish for a reasonable price. I'd strongly recommend this place as a take-out rather than dine-in. The service is reasonably friendly, but not terribly effective. I find things like being served my entree way earlier or way later than than the rest of the people at my table sort of annoying. I love their rolls! They sooooo yum! We come over from North Van to eat here every month or two. I love the sunshine roll and the take roll.

Perhaps one of the best hole-in-the-wall sushi places in all of Lower Mainland that hasn't sold out or changed cooks in recent years. The owner is a great guy, who seems to always be behind the counter, making some of the best traditional sushi you will have for the price. Sashimi is always fresh (especially the sockeye salmon, which is rare) and tuna tataki has an interesting spin with the sauce they add - both come with very creative and multicolored garnish of thinly-ground veggies fit even for a swanky Downtown restaurant. Rolls are great too, although I usually stick to the few I like, so I can't speak to all of them. Appetizers are average - I have definitely had better gomaye at other places, Take doesn't trim the stems off the spinach leaves so it's a little tougher than I'd like it to be. Parking situation is tricky until you figure it out - behind the restaurant itself there is room for only maybe 5 cars without them starting to double-park each other, but at the alleyway entrance on Willington side there is a nice open lot off to the side, that's never full - just park there, it's maybe a 100 foot walk to the restaurant. But, really, come here for the service, meet the owner, try the sashimi - you will not regret it. read more

I agree with Stephanie S. and give this a 4.5. Although it isn't an "authentic" Japanese owned place (via my dad overhearing the chefs speaking in Viet and Mandarin) it is still quite tasty. If you're a tiny 5 foot lady like me, the bento box for $9.95 is definitely two meals worth! The rolls are done the proper way they're suppose to, with as thin a layer of rice as possible. They also top the California rolls with black and regular sesame seeds, yum! Tempura stays crispy even though we had takeout last, chicken teriyaki has crispy skin and the beef one is super tender. Miso soup is JUST right, not overly salt or diluted. Overall, everything here is super delicious and melts in your mouth, my only complaint is everything can be a bit on the salty side when you're all done eating, and service can be a tad slow but I went on New Years Eve and it was quite busy. read more

Small, well run sushi restaurant in Burnaby Heights. The fish is always super fresh and they have a few creative rolls to make things interesting, without sacrificing quality to try and be trendy. Large enough that I've never had a problem getting a table fairly quickly but small enough to ensure that there is efficient service. Not the cheapest place in the neighborhood, but it's definitely a 'you get what you pay for' situation with the slightly higher prices reflecting the way higher quality and standards in the food and presentation (I say this having eaten or ordered from pretty much every sushi restaurant that has come and gone in the neighborhood). They have outlasted almost all of their competition which says a lot! read more

Take sushi will alwys be one of my to go places for sushi. Theyre bento boxes are really good. The teriyaki chicken is alwys crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. Same goes for theyre tempura its alwys so crispy. I love theyre spicy scallop rolls its not like your generic sushi restaurants the spice is a little different. will definitely be back for more. Take Sushi = worst service and sushi i've had in some time. gyoza is soggy and mushy. spicy rolls were basically regular rolls with what seems like spicy sweet jam squirted on top. don't bother saying thank you, they will roll their eyes at you. every time. waited 20 minutes for an order of gyoza they forgot. read more
