Made a reservation for 6 people. There were a lot of time slots available. We were seated and enjoyed draft beers and white sangria. We started off with the fried zucchini, mussels in white sauce, stuffed mushrooms and fried calamari. All of the appetizers were great portions and very flavorful. The fried zucchini came with a chipotle dipping sauce that was so good and had a kick to it. The stuffed mushrooms had a lot of stuffing and were so delicious and perfect to share. All of our entrees were generous portions and so delicious. We all ended up taking some of our food home. All of the entrees came with a sals that was so fresh and light. The side dishes options were great. I tried the mashed potatoes and they tasted homemade. The restaurant was pretty quiet for a Saturday night. Our server was attentive and very friendly. Nicely tucked into a wooded area off of Route 33 this restaurant is neither a Must Go to or a Must avoid but one of those places you will try and wind up going to from time to time. The inside is beautiful and nicely decorated, a warm environment with attentive service. The food is of good quality and they do prepare dishes well; however nothing really stood out as excellent. The menu is moderate in selection but tends to be on the traditional side and plays it safe. There are some specials available which seemed to be mostly rehashed or small spins off of the regular menu items. The Clams appetizer is definitely a good choice. Very fresh and robust with a generous drawn butter accompaniment. The Blackened Ahi Tuna was cooked well but was plated alone amidst a plate too large for the serving. The Steak Au Poivre was cooked beautifully however it was made with capers instead of the traditional Black Peppercorns and finished with a wine instead of Cognac which lent a different flavor profile to the dish. When I'm down in Jersey I like to get something I can't get back home. That translates to raw clams and sole. Went looking for a local place and honestly, Tally Ho is about as local, old school Jersey as you can get. The place was packed, so the service was understandably a little slow, but that gave me time to talk with the other patrons - so no complaints. The clams were spot on (I mean they are raw, so we aren't talking a high level of difficulty). I had the stuffed sole. A little more bread crumb than I like, but still delicious. Good portion size, my beer was cold and never went dry. All good, solid food and a pleasant place to eat. Lots of people so you may want to call ahead. Even the bar was packed. read more

Went there on a Friday night for dinner around 7:45, place was packed but we got a table in 10 minutes. Ambience was quiet and I think it has to do with the crowd, most of tables was older folks(70ish+), food (big portions) was just ok, drinks also ok, a bit on the pricey side for this type of restaurant the service was extremely slow, probably the reason why we will not go back. I hope that this eatery continues to display its simple yet unique aesthetics for 30 more years. The outside has a very unassuming look, while the interior has canvases of abstract art and country decor such as horses. The tiles and the walls themselves definitely fit the country vibes that works with the establishment, though I am not sure how long it can maintain this image. Website: 5/5 The aesthetics have that classy aesthetic, with the straight, sans serif font, and the wine-red that serves as the thematic color. It immediately welcomes you to a reservation button, an email newsletter sign-in, and categories of the menu items. While the menu does not have images of the items, they do present themselves with transparency, since a few of the menu items do admit that market prices do occur. Ambiance: 4/5 I came during the weekday afternoon, meaning that the establishment did not have a live customer presence. Indeed, I was the only customer to not seat myself in the dining area outside of the bar. I will credit Tally-Ho for having options in terms of space, whether you wish to drink in the bars, you wish to sit at the tables near the television, or you wish to simply eat in the dining areas, including parts where the booths have their own walled sections. Every part of the establishment has enough space. However, my table had a sticky surface and the television did get a bit noisy. Food: 4/5 I ordered the Veal Parmigiana Sandwich with a side of fries, and a bottle of water. I will say that the presentation of the meal itself surprised me, almost resembling a pizza. However, it only worked against it because the veal eclipsed the bread itself. The well-melted Parmesan cheese gave its cheese stretch and the veal itself had a thick succulence as intended. The bun held its form despite the size of the veal. I simply had to cut the veal before I could eat it with the buns. The french fries had a lot of crispiness (a bit too much), though they did complement the sandwich quite well. Worth The Money?: 3/5 The website described Tally-Ho Restaurant as a "hidden gem," and I can see how it would work for it. Indeed, its unique position along a wooded highway with a rural-coastal connection definitely works with its brand. It offers Italian food, while also maintaining its country aesthetics. However, I do not know how many people who would travel between these parts would become potential customers. It seemed to me that Tally-Ho has a central base of consumers that keep it going, which I can see working but it would not have long-term benefit. The fact that I had to include a knife with my sandwich proves that the ownership understands that some meals need accommodation. I did have a pleasant time throughout my meal, since having my own booth did give me comfort, and the meal was appropriately timed. I do not think that the delayed wait time outweighs the ambiance, but only slightly. I am concerned about the future of this establishment, though nothing anytime soon. I do not have any real suggestions except for the leadership of the establishment to ask based on what I wrote earlier about "What would Tally-Ho look like for 30 more years?" I do not know if I would make Tally-Ho my first or second choice, unless I intend to bring a lot of people for a catering event. I will say that the Veal Parmigiana Sandwich and fries did match the price. Rating: 4/5 Stars I had a pretty good experience and had no regrets coming. Recommend To... I've never had a bad meal here in the 25 years or so that I've been coming. A couple of weeks ago we didn't have a reservation and it was super busy. We were offered seats at the bar and I never sit at the bar but it was getting late and it had already been a long day . We sat at the bar. First, great food as usual and the bar is lovely and very comfortable. Our bartender was Sue who turned out to be not only a great bartender and wonderful company but a terrific server, drinker deliverer, you name it . This restaurant was recommended by a local hotel, and it was well deserving of the recommendation! We started with Chicken and Rice Soup which was obviously made daily and with fresh ingredients. The sole was topped with thinly sliced almonds and served atop a generous portion of perfectly cooked risotto. The penne bolognese was not only delicious, but it was very nice to learn they offer gluten free penne pasta. And our server was a sweetheart! I came for the name. I found it on Yelp planning out my trip, saw the name, and was completely won over. And frankly, I have no regrets. Tally-Ho is in an unassuming building by itself off a busy road (no left turns to exit). The interior is clean, clean white walls and black tables largely lit by natural sunlight for lunch. There are tables in window alcoves. There's also a bar that serves libations and allows the lunch crowd to eat. It's hard to find escargot, at least in the circles I run in, and the appetizer was such a treat! The seasoning enhanced the escargot, and the garlic toast was great to help soak up the excess. The roast beef sandwich was a great deal - it provided almost too much roast beef, and was nicely chilled. Tucked away off to the side of route 33 with parking in the rear this Northern Italian cuisine restaurant is much better than its outside appearance. Featuring an relatively extensive menu along with a special menu of either existing dishes or slight variations on those items at a lower price. Shared an appetizer of Buffalo Calamari which was basically Calamari rings with Franks buffalo sauce and some blue cheese dipping sauce, nice combination. The main course was a seafood Provençal over Linguine pasta which was excellent. I must mention the serving sizes which are enormous the appetizer was large enough for four people and the main course could feed two to three people. The dining area just off a large bar area with some small intimate alcoves with an attentive staff, I would definitely recommend this restaurant and eat there again when in the area. read more

My wife and I went for the first time and we were seated in the front window. The waitress came over dropped of bread and took our drink order. I then sat there and watched our waitress get drinks for a table that came in after us. Serve another table coffee and then they ordered dessert and we're served. The third table ordered a salad and a beer and were served. At this time 3 tables ordered and got served and we never got our drinks. I have passed the Tally-Ho a bagzillion times since I moved to NJ and I'll be honest, I never ha time to stop in to check it out. But low and behold this past Tuesday after I picked up My Partner in Crime (MPC) she said, hey lets give this place a go Now, they close at 10pm and we were rolling in at 9pm, and being aware of the the restaurant business they want to go home! on time. SO this was a "Dine, Pay & Dash" dinner. We were seated promptly bu Christina that introduced herself as our server, she took out drink order, went over the specials and gave us time to look over the menu- it's not a huge dinner menu but it has something for everyone and I can say that the prices were not that bad. Christina was super friendly, well informed and took out order right away, we knew it was nearing closing so we didn't want to be rude, she said for us to take our time and never once rushed us. First thing I saw was this place is really nice has little tables in cubby areas which I think is great for a date night or just ant a bit more privacy when talking and dining. I looked over the menu and saw escargot!! hell yes!! I was ordering this, PEOPLE!! for the love of all that is food heaven, if you have not had Escargot, try it, I know its a visual thing or whatever, but you have to just take a food risk sometimes and throw caution to wind. These came out in little crock all bubbly and garlicky with toasted garlic bread, I even used the house complimentary bread to sop up the delicious sauce and best of all NO SHELL! I posted a video. I love that they didn't over cook them, delicate and flavorful, worth every penny!! I will be back here for the escargot many more times. PIC- ordered the chicken Parmesan diner that came with a salad the house dressing is so good, Tally-Ho needs to bottle it and sell it, it's that good. It was a good portion of chicken, lightly bread crumbed and the sauce was perfect, she said it wasn't too salty, to sweet or tangy, it complimented the dish and it had plenty of melty cheese. I ordered the chicken picatta with extra capers with a side of steak fries, this was a very good dish and I actually had extra for lunch today. as full as we were Christina suggest the chocolate mouse cake for dessert- seriously, who can turn down chocolate cake right? TALLY-HO-HUM... We really wanted to like this place - it's got a quiet old-school charm about it with intimate dining spaces, regular bar & dining patrons, a pleasant and welcoming Proprietor along with an attractive selection of menu items and generous portions at reasonable prices... - BUT - Nothing can cover up a kitchen that is not up to the job; SOUP - the "Soup du Jour" House made Cream of Mushroom looked inviting and was creamy but offered little else in the way of flavor, particularly absent of mushroom flavor and seasonIng. APPETIZER - we are Onion Ring people and inquired if the Egg Battered Onion Rings were House made - we were told by our waitress that they were but while eating them we soon experienced that soggy, watery onion tell-tale sign to the contrary which always betrays frozen Onion Rings. When we discretely asked the Proprietor he readily advised us that they were indeed frozen. ENTREE #1 - the Pork Chops Murphy are offered as "Single or Double" and with a choice of "Hot, Mixed or Mild" peppers. I ordered Double & Hot. The order arrived Double and Mixed. I was hungry and the dish looked nice enough so I didn't send it back. Once I began eating, it was apparent that the Pork Chops were not cooked through (some parts raw) and I also detected the overly uniform dimensions and textural/flavor deficiencies that define a commercial bag of frozen peppers & onions mixed into the dish. Our waitress very apologetically offerd me a new dish but I opted to just have the kitchen finish cooking the one I ordered. It wasn't awful but was clearly lacking the tangy, acidic "pop" of contrast that defines a legit "Murphy". ENTREE #2 - my wife ordered the House Specialty of Chicken, Shrimp & Filet Mignon Scampi Romano served over Angel Hair pasta. It was not an attractive presentation (sloppily thrown about the plate) and the Scampi portion of the Scampi Romano sauce consisted of the addition of some garlic, oil & butter to a simple tomato sauce instead of a being a true Scampi Sauce combined with fresh tomato & romano cheese as the name implies. The dish wasn't terrible but it too, didn't deliver. SUMMARY - Tally-Ho should and can be the "Hidden Gem" that many reviews describe, but for now this unique little establishment remains blessed with a potential that sadly remains hidden and unfulfilled. read more

Go to the restaurant and was told they didn't have my reservation... even showed who I think is the Manager my phone with the number in my recent calls. No apology no nothing! Drove a half hour in the Summer no less (more traffic on the roads) to have to leave and figure out another place to be able to get into during prime dinner hour! Never again Tally Ho! We have eaten here a few times and for the most part the food has been very good. This most recent visit my wife and I shared the pork chop Murphy dinner. We sat at the bar and before we ordered we saw a gentleman eating this and he said it was very good. Well...... ours came out partially cooked and we had to send it back to get to medium which we ordered. They gave me 2 steak knives and I probably could have used them both. Stopped in due to thirst, yes thirsty. I have been here in late '15 for a Xmas get together. I do remember the food was excellent and the owner, who was very visible, was very friendly. I sat at the bar and was greeted by Beth, whom I am told, has worked this place a number of years. She was very accommodating. For you bierophiles, not much in the craft line. The good: nice place and clean. Nice people, reasonable prices and very good food. The bad: Extremely slow service. Took 2.5 hours for a party of 10 people. Over an hour and half before we got salads even. Other tables came and went before we got anything. Also, confusion on the menu. According to how we read the menu, what some ordered came with sides, but we were told they didn't by the waiter. The ugly: We all ordered water. The water came back in pitchers tinted in rust. The water had a strong metallic, horrible taste. None of us could drink the water and we all sent it back. I drink water with my meal so that was the end for me.
