So it's Valentine's Day and my husband and I are on our date - we love Vietnamese food and have been wanting to try Hen's. Upon arriving, we noticed there's plenty of parking spaces. Inside, the decor is beautiful and polished with Vietnamese straw hats and taxi bikes. There's plenty of tables and only few customers. We were quickly greeted by two staff by the door and got seated with menus. I noticed the karaoke stand and stage, but there was no one singing at the time so they must have karaoke on certain occasions or time. We looked at the menu and it looked pretty impressive. When we were ready to order, no staff are around. Five minutes later, our waitress showed up and took our orders. For appetizers, we had the mini crepes and my entree, vermicelli special which included grilled pork and shrimps and a spring roll. The crepes were a bit undercooked and it's not as crispy as it should be. I was also a bit disappointed with my entree. The vermicelli noodles were overcooked so the noodles were broken into smaller strands. The fish sauce was pretty bland. I really wanted to like this place but sadly it was a letdown. I would rate this really 2.5 stars but our waitress was nice so feeling generous here with 3 stars. I'm not sure if we will ever come back. My husband was also disappointed with his entree. We have our fair share of Vietnamese food so we know good authentic cooks when we try a dish. I had been wanting to try this place since it opened recently, so I decided to take my wife there for Valentine's Day. When you first arrive, the décor immediately stands out. The decorations are a nice touch and really make you feel like you've stepped into Vietnam. Unfortunately, that's where the compliments end. I originally ordered the hen rice platter but was told they didn't have the pork pie or sliced pork that typically come with the dish. I was surprised, as those are staple ingredients. Instead, I ordered the vermicelli noodles with sliced pork and sugar cane shrimp paste. We also ordered the bánh khọt, the small savory pancakes topped with shrimp and minced pork. The food was very disappointing. The bánh khọt were soggy and lacked flavor. The vermicelli noodles were bland, the pork was chewy and fatty, and the fish sauce tasted watered down. Overall, the dish was so underwhelming that I didn't even finish the meat. The highlight of the meal was the avocado shake. The food looks better than it tasted. In the end, the food was overpriced and not worth what they're charging. I don't mind paying for good food, but these dishes were mediocre at best. I wouldn't return. If you're going for the décor, it might be worth a visit--but if you're looking for quality food, this isn't the place. They get one star for the service because they were nice and plenty of parking located at shopping center. read more

Service was excellent wait staff was attentive and explained things. Food was great the Jack fruit smoothie presented well and tasted just as good as it looked. Bánh mí was a little smaller than most others i have had but the price reflected that as about $2 cheaper then others I've had but still worth it as the bun was packed full of meat. The space is nicely styled, though it could benefit from better upkeep. Some of our menus were sticky windows had noticeable hand prints and a good dusting could be had on some of the intricate decorations. Plates cutlery and cups were clean. read more

I had the best experience here last night. From the moment you walk in, the host was incredibly welcoming, to the decor being so beautiful. Our waiter gave us some really good recommendations, as this was our first time dining here. We got the lychee plum martinis, followed by the chicken bao buns for an appetizer. Service was great, Sue our server was so warm, energetic and friendly. She was very informative and answered all our questions. Now the food! The appetizers we ordered were wings, bao tacos, steamed pork dumplings and summer rolls with shrimp, all were delicious. For the entree's we had Garlic noodles with seafood combo, garlic noodles with chicken, pineapple fried rice with chicken and shrimp and pao kee mao (pad Thai noodles with vegetables garlic sauce, eggs, chicken and shrimp). Chloe was our waitress and she was so sweet and welcoming, plus she took the time to tell us about the amazing events they host -- such a nice touch. We started with the spring rolls, which were absolutely delicious and perfectly crispy. I am so glad that there is a nice Vietnamese restaurant the area. This place is huge and looks like a lounge bar somehow but the food is nice. Even this place is big but it can get packed during the weekend. When going to a Vietnamese place, I alway try their pho first. The portion is big and it came with a lot of meats. I had it twice. The first time was nice but the second time was a too salty. I also had their Sparkling Lime Yuzu Margarita which is delicious. It was refreshing. The overall prices are higher but I wouldn't mind paying a little bit extra for the comforting food sometimes. read more

If I could rate their food, I'd give it a 1.5 out of 5. The pho I ordered was extremely greasy. The oil separated from the broth, and the first scoop was more oil (or beef fats) than soup. To make matters worse, it was incredibly salty. The service was equally disappointing. I arrived with a group of 11 people, and we sat down for 10 minutes without being given a menu. Our drink orders weren't even taken. I tried to make eye contact with the server, but they completely ignored me. I went up to the host stand and asked for the menu, but the server took her time. We sat there for total of 15 minutes before she finally came. When we finally ordered, we didn't receive our water. Instead, the table that arrived 10 minutes after us got our water. They were sitting right next to us. Their orders were taken before ours. The decor was nice, but overall, I won't be returning to this restaurant. read more

After running around and taking care of some errands we decided to go to Hen Vietnamese Kitchen in Neptune for a late lunch. It was fantastic! The decor inside was nice and inviting with Vietnamese straw hats, taxi bikes and the waving lucky cats. We were seated right away and KUDOS to our server Laine. She made sure she addressed all allergy concerns...so important!! She also knew what ingredients were in the dishes and how they were cooked. The appetizer (garlic wings) came out and we were able to finish it before our main course arrived. That is one of my pet peeves having the appetizer and main course served almost at the same time. The Pho was served steaming hot and the broth was delicious. There was also a dish of condiments to add to the Pho like bean sprouts, jalapeños, limes and basil and mint leaves. Also on the table was fish sauce, Sriracha, soy sauce and chili oil to doctor your Pho to your liking. After eating half the bowl Laine packed up our soups into containers and we ordered dessert to share which was bananas fried in egg roll wrappers along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. It was very good. We also visited the ladies room. It was clean and had 2 regular stalls and a handicapped stall. After noticing Hen's reviews going downhill, we revisited and sadly saw why. The food came out extremely rapidly which is never a good sign. Appetizers were beef in grape leaves and fried mini crepes both with the exact same edible garnish. The beef was cooked in oil not of recent vintage. Next was pad thai that tasted as if it were sweetened with sugar and noodles that were actually mushy. When paying the bill I was surprised to see that each cocktail was $18. Hen is in the Home Depot strip mall, not Manhattan and this was a big increase since our last visit. I checked the menu to see if a mistake was made and found a small piece of duct tape with the number 18 on it covering up the original price. Additionally there was some loud, non-relaxing piped in music and a stage with a seizure inducing light show going on although there was no entertainment. I would have given two stars but our server was quite pleasant. read more

One thing I want to point out is that there was an odd smell that hit me in the face when I entered the restaurant. I brushed it off until I read other reviews that said the same thing. I can't put my finger on it but it was not pleasant. I ordered their pork chop plate. - black spots on the raw carrots. How can you even serve that? - the pork chop was dry AF. - egg cake was dense and dry. - shredded pork was meh. - the entire dish was drenched in a dark sweet soy sauce that went into everything on the plate which made it super salty. - the only thing I liked on this dish was the fried runny egg. The egg was yummy. I am being sarcastic. I still can't believe they charged $23 for this dish. If it was delicious I can see why but it wasn't. Celebrating my niece's high school graduation. Place is beautifully decorated. Six diners ordered apps and entree's. Food was served hot, fresh, and very flavorful. Service was clunky, as there were long periods of time where no one checked on our table despite the restaurant not being busy on a Monday night at 5:30p. Hen is a fancy Vietnamese restaurant with Thai cuisine. I came by on a Saturday evening and it was packed. It was a long wait in line to speak to a hostess, but luckily we were able to get a table. The food was okay. The bun rieu aka crab noodle soup is the worst I've had. The crab meatballs were so dry, not enough crab. The broth lack depth. It seems to be a one broth for all kind of soup. As the tomato was added into the soup afterwards instead of stewing for a while. The service was okay. As an Asian I don't like paying for atmosphere haha. I would probably go with other Vietnamese options in the future. There isn't anything here that isn't available elsewhere. read more
