I have to apologize to Tamashii. Last year when I first tried their ramen I was really let down but having gone back recently they have converted me. I still don't love their Tamashii ramen. The mineral salt leaves a taste I don't love. However, this time I had the Chasyu Ramen and I really enjoyed it. The broth was a little creamier and not as salty. I think the surprise standout for me were the pork buns. The pork was great and they weren't drenched in a sauce which I appreciated. When Tamashii first opened, a short line existed because of the lack of waiting space upon entering the restaurant. People opened the door, saw the crowd, and left. Luckily I found a spot inside and waited 10 minutes for a seat. I ordered the miso ramen and it came out faster than I expected. The broth, noodles, and toppings tasted like the average ramen package that can be found in Manhattan, but I give Tamashii thumbs up for providing the only decent Japanese ramen in the FH neighborhood. Updating my review just to say how much I still love this place. We ordered from Tamashii pretty regularly throughout the pandemic and we still do (at least once a month usually). The food always comes fast and hot. It's always consistent. Any time there's been even the slightest mistake, the staff has been so accommodating and makes it right. Came here for dinner one chilly evening a little while ago. The place is pretty popular, so you may have to wait before getting a table, but it's popularity is warranted as the food here was pretty good. They have a couple of vegetarian ramen offerings, and a decent selection of starters and other dishes. I got their kare veggie ramen and the fiancé got their chashyu ramen, and we were both very satisfied with our choices. I got to the restaurant at 11:57 and they opened at 12. They asked us to sit and wait a few minutes. Since we were the first ones in, I picked a table against the wall (all tables against the wall were the same) and sat with my 7 years old and 3 years old. Table was for 4 people (2 seats against the wall and 2 stools) A few minutes later a group of Asian kids with their parents came in and the people that work there first took out a stool out of my table, which was ok, since we were 3, but a few minutes later they came back and asked us to completely relocate to another table that had only stools. I explained to them that it was not safe for my kids to seat in a stool or chair without a back protection, but they said that the tables against the wall were for larger group of people. (???? Each square table sat 2 people one on each side, but ok) and they replied no. Few seconds later, I asked again to seat in one of the tables against the wall and this time I said that we would eat quickly and leave, but they were resistant towards relocating us to a table that was not safe for my kids. Please understand that each table sits 2 people (one on each side) and we were In a table against that wall that sat 3 people before. (2 tables combined) + the restaurant was empty. All tables were the same against the wall and there were about 8 tables against the wall + 3 tables across and the other maybe 3 tables towards the back of the restaurant on the way to the bathroom. The restaurant was empty when we first walked in as we were the first ones in. We are white Latino Americans and I am far from being a Karen, but I felt super weird and left with my kids. I went there sooo many times before with and without my kids. I won't be going back there anymore. I don't support that kind of passive aggressive behavior. I am adding a photo of the tables agains the wall. They no longer have glasses separating the tables. Updated after response: you should be apologizing not defending yourselves. The issue was clear. Maybe the waitresses were having a bad day and decided to pick on us or not. Who knows!?!? Bedsides, if you looked at my kids you would immediately see that none of them would fit on a high chair. In addition, I asked to sit against the wall on a different table 2x and I was told that the only place we could seat was on the table with the stools. Love the food, but felt extremely uncomfortable after I respectfully asked to sit on a chair with back support for my kids and was told no 2x on a empty restaurant. When a parent say that it's not safe for their kids to seat on stools, you listen to them. You don't know if the kid has a certain disability that makes it unsafe for them to seat against the wall. Also, if you are not ready to receive your client, please keep the door locked. Do not ask your client to sit anywhere we choose and give you guys a few minute. Then come to the table where we were sitting (once) and remove a stool, then (twice) ask us to completely relocate To a table with just stools. Again, 2x I tried to ask for chairs with back support with my kids and 2x you told us that we could only sit on the table with stools and the restaurant was empty. Also, when the other family arrive you came running with a menu, while we were all waiting to be welcomed. To me, it felt like passive aggressive behavior and felt super uncomfortable. There's several ways of eating ramen. One way is to just slurp and eat the noodles because the broth is so heavy. Another way is to eat the noodle and to drink the broth because it's light enough and balanced. I tried the miso ramen here and I chose the former method of approach. The broth here is really heavy and has very high fat content. The noodles are really good. Texture and taste are fantastic. I am not a big fan of the fact that they add cabbage, corn, and ground beef/pork in the dish. With a heavy broth like this I would very much rather enjoy eating the noodles but the cabbage and minced meat get in the way of being able to enjoy the noodle. The dish comes with corn which is not a bad feature because it's soft enough and won't get in the way, but the cabbage is not necessary. The crunchy texture and dry taste of the cabbage (compared to the noodles) gets in the way of the better part of the dish which is the broth soaked noodle. A bit pricy for being in the suburbs but less expensive than Ippudo. Clean restaurant as it's new and the staff are friendly. I have to say I'm really bummed about the amount of cabbage and fluff in the dish. It's as if they are trying to fill up the bowl and make up for the lack of noodles. I'm old fashioned and prefer just the pork, egg, menma (bamboo shoots), scallion, and maybe a little bit of bean sprouts. Otherwise there's way too much mixing of flavor and texture. I came here on a Saturday night with my friends and it was packed! Luckily, the wait wasn't as long as I expected it! The service was great too. We had the Unagi-don, Agedashi Tofu, Tamashii Ramen and Veggie Shio Ramen. Usually I don't eat japanese ramen because it's too rich and heavy for my liking but the Tamashii ramen really hit the spot. I had waited until the Forest Hills crowds the first few weeks had died down. We had been to Tamashii's outpost in Astoria a couple of times and really enjoyed it. I wanted to compare the Forest Hills location to the one in Astoria. I had ordered the Kara Miso (spicy) Ramen in both locations both tasted identical. The interiors of both restaurants are almost identical. Rows of tables along both sides of the space, with benches along the wall and backless stools on the aisle side of the tables. We were lucky to get one of the high top tables whose stools both have backs and are much more comfortable to sit on. Now I'm glad I have a good ramen joint within walking distance of my home. It's Saturday and they have lunch specials until 4 which was nice. I came here specifically to try the curry ramen. I ordered the pork buns and the curry ramen while my sister ordered the Kara miso ramen. The pork buns was good, it's hard to make bad pork buns but I've had better as well (Nippori ramen). The curry was a miss for me, I felt the broth was watered down, very light curry taste and they were heavy handed on the salt. The consistency of the noodles itself was done well along with the fried chicken that is served inside the same bowl but the chicken was also salty. The Kara miso ramen has a fermented taste similar to pickled radish or kimchi, I think it comes from the spicy paste they mix into the broth. I wasn't a fan, I don't like the taste of fermented soup. Overall, we got edamame, the pork buns, the 2 ramen and hot green tea for $42. I wouldn't come here for ramen, I rather take a longer train ride to ramen takumi for my ramen fix. read more

Went here with the boyfriend for a quick bite to eat. There are no other ramen places in the area so we were excited for this spot to open. He had come right after it opened and tried the Champon (a seafood ramen). This time, the time between ordering and receiving our dishes was very quick. But, as a sprouting new business, service in general still seems slightly disorganized. Tonight we both tried the Tantamen, described on the menu as a spicy noodle soup flavored with mineral salt, and topped with ground pork, bean sprouts, scallion, onion, broccoli, bok choy, egg (not hard boiled) and menma. In comparison to the seafood ramen, this broth was better, but there were scant amounts of ground meat in both of our dishes, which was disappointing. My boyfriend did note that his seafood ramen had been loaded with seafood. The ramen is on the saltier side so we stuck to drinking water. I think they are in the process of completing their liquor license, so although the menu shows different sakes, and the fridge is filled, I am pretty sure it is still BYO at the moment. Otherwise, it was filling and I was unable to finish it all, with enough to take home for lunch tomorrow. Lastly, as an unexpected surprise, we were given complimentary vanilla bean and green tea mochi after the completion of our meal. I was so excited to see a ramen shop open in Forest Hills, so of course I had to try it. We went on a Sunday afternoon and of course all three of us tried their ramen. We ordered the miso ramen as well as the tantanmen and we definitely weren't disappointed! First off, their portions are huge!!! Perfect balance of noodles to soup in a large bowl brimming with broth. My only slight complaint which is more of a personal preference is that the broth was slightly too salty for me, and I ended up taking most of my ramen home since it was way too much for me to finish. I decided to drop by Tamashii after running some errands on a freezing day. Having a slight cold and NY weather still being stubbornly cold in April, the temptation of ramen and soul-warming broth was too much to resist. For a while, I've been trying to find ramen in America that equals or is even close to the ramen I've eaten in Japan. Maybe that's a ridiculous expectation? It seems like most ramen in the states are either super salty or lacking in flavor. Tamashii's chasyu/chashu ramen was pretty good. The pork slices were tender and the noodles were my kind of firmness and consistency. The grated ginger did throw me for a loop though. It's... different. Call me crazy but it lent some sort of seafood-y taste to the ramen? If I had to rate the ramen itself, against my ridiculous standards of holy grail ramen from Japan, it would be a 3 out of 5. That, and a soft-boiled egg costs an extra $1.50 (but it's definitely worth it). What elevates that rating to a 5 was the customer service. I read a few reviews and expected a lukewarm welcome, but it was anything but. The waitress (and I'm guessing the owner or manager?) were both very kind and refilled my glass of water practically 4 times. That's how attentive they were. There was also a dad and his 2-year old son sitting at the table next to me--talk about Dad of the Year, ordering okonomiyaki for his son and his son gobbling everything up happily. (I loved it--I hope his son grows up eating so many more different foods.) Anyways, like toddlers do, he made small messes here and there, but the employees were patient about it. 3 stars for the chasyu ramen. 10 stars for great, attentive, and kind staff, and for an owner who, when he tells reviewers that he will train his staff better, actually follows through with that promise. I'm sure that other ramen on the menu might be better than the chasyu I had today, so the chasyu rating doesn't matter much to me. Extraordinary service can make up for that anytime. The first time me and my friend went here, I accidentally left a poster my friend had given me. A couple of weeks afterwards, my friend went back by themselves after a doctor's appointment and the place still had the poster and gave it back to them! The fact that they not only kept the poster but remembered us really shows how attentive they are to their patrons and it's extremely appreciated! Now it's our usual spot when we're in Forest Hills! Came to this cozy restaurant for a quick Monday lunch, and I could not speak more highly about my experience here. The service staff were very welcoming, even the busboys that were on staff said hello! We got seated right away, and the waiters helped us take our order right away. If you have a big party it's probably annoying to come here because they can really only make one big table. Anyway I ordered the chasyu ramen which is just the tamashii ramen with extra chasyu.
