Don't judge this place by its exterior. The inside is absolutely beautiful--homey, welcoming, and surprisingly refined. There are so many thoughtful little details in the décor that make it feel special. Every server and staff member was genuinely kind and impressively hospitable, offering a level of service that honestly surpasses some higher-end restaurants I've been to. Now, the food. Their ginger salad might be the best I've ever had. They use romaine and green leaf lettuce instead of the typical iceberg, which gives it far more flavor and texture. The dressing was smooth and creamy--not broken, watery, or overly acidic like so many ginger dressings tend to be. The miso soup also had more depth of flavor than most versions I've tried. A bonus surprise: they have more lunch options than what's listed online, and the in-person prices are actually cheaper. So don't rely on the website--come in and look for yourself. I ordered the chicken teriyaki and sushi roll combo. They offer a generous selection of rolls to choose from, and I went with the Alaskan roll. The filling was plentiful and well-balanced. The rice on the outside was slightly thin in a few bites where the seaweed peeked through, but the overall flavor was excellent. The chicken teriyaki was outstanding--juicy, tender, perfectly seared, and full of rich teriyaki flavor. I also appreciated the unexpected cold bean sprout salad on the side, which added a nice contrast to the meal. Overall, this was a wonderful lunch at a very fair price--only $15. I moved from Hawaii with my family about 2 years ago. And because there's a huge population of Japanese on the Aloha State, it's not surprising that this restaurant reminds me of the mom and pop places that you find on the island. It's a small restaurant but the nostalgia of the interior cannot be denied. And it turned out some of the staff are from Hawaii too so it just adds to the warm, friendly atmosphere you can expect from a place like this. As for the food, just as good and impressive. My dad and I had their chirashi or rice with different seafood varieties and my mom had one of their teishoku or combination plates. They said it's a sushi restaurant but I guarantee they have more than that at Tanaka. If you decide to try it, which I recommend you do, call and make a reservation because unfortunately you can't do it online and it's a small restaurant so it's better to call ahead of time anyway. We came back to try some different items and while we didn't have as great of a selection this time, I would still recommend Tanaka! The shumai tasted like a frozen snack you would get at a grocery store and the nigiri was not impressive. I would stick to the spicy tuna crunch roll with toro and their small plates. read more

Old school 1980's era of traditional Japanese restaurant with a small sushi bar. Restaurant appears to be actually owned & run by a Japanese family which is refreshing to see. I'm from CA most sushi places out there are not. I sat at the sushi bar & ordered nigiri. Service was very good. The food was decent. Sake was ok, toro was good, unagi was good. Ikura was good. I ordered amaebi along with the heads. The shrimp themselves were on the small side and the heads came out lightly deep fried with no tempura sauce. One of the heads was almost just a hollow shell. A little disappointed with the amaebi. Overall, a good experience & prices were reasonable. I like the old school interior as it's what I grew up with when first started eating sushi as a kid. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Tanaka before now; clearly I need to make up for lost time. Tanaka is located tucked back in the corner of a strip mall off of Hwy 9/Alpharetta Highway and until 2012, I had no idea it was there. My partner and I had our first lunch date there when he suggested it and it's become my favorite sushi place since then. It's a small restaurant with maybe 10-12 tables and a small sushi bar near the back. I believe as of right now they're only open for dinner, but they make a darned good lunch, too! The spicy tuna roll is always excellent. The dinner and lunch boxes are solid - I am a fan of the tempura one that comes with (dinner) 3 shrimp and a good selection of tempura veggies, seaweed salad, nigiri sushi, agedashi tofu (fried in a teriyaki sauce), and of course rice. The quality of the fish is excellent - fresh and crisp and clean tasting. And of course everything is served with the usual small salad with ginger dressing and a bowl of miso soup to start. I'm looking forward to their reopening for lunch, hopefully soon, so we can start enjoying our sushi lunches again! read more

This place is good! If you're nearby and hungry, I'd go here. It's not the best sushi or someplace I'd drive an hour to go to, but it's worth going to if you're nearby. We had the sushi B which is 8 nigiri and 1 California roll. You can't get out of the California with the nigiri combos which kinda sucked. I don't really like to get California rolls when I'm at a sushi place. We also got the dynamite roll I think which had something crunchy and a good bit of fish for a smaller roll. They serve you a small plate of salad and soup with the combo meal. Salad wasn't my favorite. Just a few bites but the dressing was not very flavorful. Soup was standard, though. They gave scallops in their nigiri selection so I was super pleased with that. It was also nice sizes of fish so plus for that. Sushi rice didn't hold together well though so I made a bit of a mess picking it up. Overall, if I was within a few miles, I'd probably come back but there's a lot of nearby options so keep that in mind too. read more

I might have been out of my mind the last time I reviewed Tanaka. It has been my favorite sushi restaurant for quite some time. I love the quaint and cozy interior. It's very small and tucked away with minimal decor in neutral, unoffensive palette. Could do with getting rid of the 80s speakers which never seem to be in use. ;) On warmer days, cold sushi hits the spot and equally udon for cold days. They have daily lunch specials for around $12 which give you quite a bit of food, including miso soup and a small salad. If you're going for udon, make sure you order early. They will run out. With such limited seating, you might hit a small queue if youre going at a popular time. read more

This place has shockingly good reviews. It looks cute from the outside, really tiny and cramped on the inside. It took forty-five minutes to get my sushi, with my poor coworker coming out of the wait with absolutely nothing because the sushi chef mixed up her order. To be fair, the prices are excellent for sushi. But to be honest, don't order the nigiri. My coworker and my boss both agreed that it was best not to eat it. The color of it was off.
