Huge sashimi bowl, hand for size
    Ariel H.

Cute family owned Japanese and Korean shop! Not a ton of seating and it fills up during meal times so come early. Clearly a neighborhood favorite and the owners know many of the guests that came in. Great prices & value. The sashimi bowl is huge. Seafood noodle (udon) had lots of seafood and the rice cake dumpling soup was light and flavorful. The katsu was crispy and had a lightly sweet creamy sauce! Cafe type of service where you order up front and pick up your food from the kitchen counter. Remember to put back your trays/dishes after you're done! Note they don't take Amex, only Visa or Mastercard.

The best place for a quick but satisfying lunch or dinner. This shop has been here for over 10 years and the chef and his family have been providing the same high quality dishes with friendly service since they opened. Great Korean set menu but my recommendation has to be their jjampong or spicy seafood noodles. Quick, clean, and great dishes, can't go wrong. FYI, closed on Sundays for those that want to order sushi party trays for the weekend.

Tanaka Sushi is locating in a strip mall and is a small restaurant that can seat about 20 people. There is no tableside service, you order at the front and pickup from the counter. There's also complimentary self-serve hot tea on the counter. The staff is friendly and welcoming. I came around 530p on a Saturday and there was a short wait for a seat, but no more than a few minutes before we got a table. By 6p, there were more spots available. Tempura $10 - You get 12 pieces with 2 of them being shrimp. The batter is just ok, and there were too many squashes and potatoes in the vegetable ratio. I prefer a variety - green beans, broccoli, etc. Both the rolls I tried were delicious! They tasted fresh and the rice was nice and chewy. It was hard to pick a favorite between the two, but the House Dragon has the advantage with the eel. --House Dragon Roll --Red Dragon Roll .|\---/| | o_o | .\_^_/..2022

I've come here quite a few times in past years, lovely little restaurant, has a couple seating options but never had any issues finding a spot. You come in and order at the front and take a seat. They'll call out your order and you pick it up at the counter. Food is served super fresh and hot. I like getting the katsu don because the dashi soaks into the katsu and rice, marrying the flavors together nicely. The way it's made just feels like home cooking. Rice is piping hot and fresh! Saba is super delicious and very well made, my mom loved this and says she'd come back for it since other places don't make it well, but this tasted fresh! In the winter they don't have water but they do have self serve tea, and the tea is super hot. It takes awhile to cool down. Wish they did have self serve water available. Overall delicious food, friendly service, and fast at making food, great place to grab a cozy meal.

Avocado Roll (6)and Spicy California Roll (6)

This place does a nice mix of Korean food and Japanese. I started with some rolls that included avocado rolls and a spicy California roll. They were delicious and I would definitely order them again. I ordered a spicy chicken dish then went ahead and said extra spicy please. It was sooooooo spicy! I'm glad they came through. It was a nice plate of food. I was sweating. I enjoyed the miso soup it came with. There were some small pieces floating in it that I wasn't sure what it was. The cabbage salad was so dry. It had a strange texture. I did like the dressing it came with. It was a little pricey but not outrageous enough to not come back. Overall this place is worth checking out.

Spicy pork is hands down the best you'll ever find in the area. Service is quick, and the girl at the cashier was very kind and friendly!

I LOVE coming to Tanaka for Korean food! I don't often have their sushi because I love their Korean food so much. As other reviewers have stated the sashimi rice is super good and I highly recommend the seafood jjampong as well as the cod fish egg stew. The food comes out really quickly and every dish is really flavorful. Overall, I'd recommend this place with confidence, I regularly visit this place and will continue to do so.

Had lunch here on a Wednesday afternoon. They don't have a lot of seating, and it was about half full. This is a counter service restaurant but with a full menu. I got a variety of things, and everything was tasty, but not amazing. The Tanaka tower was the best part of the meal. I would definitely order it again. The gyoza were deep fried and puffy. The tempura was light but maybe needed a little salt. The galbi marinade was less flavorful than what I've had other places. The staff is friendly, and I would go back to try other items.

    Sashimi Party Tray

Whenever I'm in the area I always go to Tanaka sushi for their Nabe Udon. Their broth is the best udon broth I've ever had and it's ruined udon at other places for me because I can only think about how Tanaka's is better. Their tofu stew is good too, although not the typical Sundubu Jjigae you would expect so be aware of that if that's what you are wanting/expect. Their sashimi is top quality as well. Got their sashimi party platter and every piece of fish was fresh and delicious. They put lemon slices as garnish but also gives it a slight hint of lemon that's really refreshing when eating the sashimi. They were also really helpful determining the appropriate party tray size since we were looking to feed 9 people and wanted to make sure there was enough sashimi to go around. It's part of a very small strip mall and is a pretty small store so there is a lot of takeout especially now during Covid, but there are some small tables to eat in at this place. Parking right in front of the store or along the nearby storefronts. This place is family-owned as well so come support a local business with great food

Food safety! I ordered the $27 Tanaka Box from Uber Eats and it came with a roach. Please work on your cleanliness. I opened the bag right away so it must have come from the restaurant.

Spicy tuna, California rolls, nigiri, and sashimi!

This is the sushi you're looking for in the Western burbs of Chicago. The quality of the fish, how it's cut, the flavor of the rice, the ratio of fish to rice, and the prices are all in alignment with one another. The service is friendly. Just call or ask if you can substitute an item, if you're looking at chef's specials. I'll have to try the Korean food, but for Japanese food, this is now my go to in Naperville!

I ordered online for carry out and the platform was easy to navigate. Once my husband and I arrived at the resto we were greeted by a very kind staff member. Our food wasn't ready but within 5 mins of us being there it was good to go. We tried the wonton soup and chicken dumplings app. Both were on the bland side. Normally I'm used to wonton soup also having noodles and theirs does not. Flavors were OK, felt like both dishes were missing spices. Everything was cooked perfectly though. Maybe we ordered the wrong items from here and need to try others instead.

In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. When I walked in, all those common chairs I mentioned were stacked upside down on the tables in the way that places do when they are closed. The taciturn fellow who worked there assured me they were indeed open, and explained they had just finish washing the floor. Please dont read any of this as negative-the best Chinese places I've ever been have looked like this-and if you've paid attention to the Travel/Food shows on the TeeVee, the joints in China itself are pretty much the same. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. Bring some salt packets along when you visit "J's", maybe. The fellow who was waiter and cashier was a "western" fellow, whom I engaged and turned out to be quite an experienced foodie. some pleasant conversation indeed. Throwing 4 for this excellent establishment, with a few grains of salt separating it from 5...

It was plenty of food, topped off with smores for dessert. The meat was fresh. Lots of meat, good beef, some pork, and a few shrimp. After 10 minutes the host comes and tells the couple they have tables but they aren't cleaned yet and he's waiting. Mind you the restaurant isn't packed, but there are a few tables dining. I'm guessing they were understaffed. Anyhow, after another 10 minutes the guy ahead of us gets seated. Nothing was said to us. Another party of two came and they were also waiting and they flagged someone down. The host said the same thing as earlier, they have tables that haven't been cleaned. 10 mins later he goes to try to seat them knowing we were there first. The lady even told him, well they were here first. He went ahead and seated them anyway then came back and got us. It's 245. I told him we had a reservation for 230. The lack of communication from the host was off putting. We were hungry and my son really wanted bbq. I would have gone to SGD, but they are closed on Mondays. Anyhow, we wait around a good 10 mins before a server comes to take a drink order. Again, they weren't completely packed, I counted 3 servers and a host. We order ribeye, chicken, filet, kalbi and the hirami in a pot for our meats. We also got corn, spinach, a salad and the fried rice and an order of white rice. I ask him if that's enough food and he says yes, but you can keep a menu in case you want more. Our table was 2 adults and 2 kids who are 11 and 9. Fried rice comes out first and the meats. I ask him to bring the white rice too for my son. He said he forgot and will grab it right away. Let's just say he brought the white rice a good 15 mins after...and I had to remind him. So my son is sitting there eating his meat with no rice. The hirami in the pot was a good size but there were 5 pieces of ribeye and 5 pieces of filet and 5 pieces of chicken and maybe 8 pieces of the kalbi. How is this enough for 4 people? So we order another 2 orders of kalbi. I don't know the happy hour portions are tiny. We also needed refills and that took a couple reminders. We also ordered another order of rice. We are pretty much done eating when I ask him what happened to our rice order? He said he will check and that he ordered it awhile ago. He comes back within 2 minutes with our rice saying there was a mix up in the kitchen? Was it really a mix up or did you just forget? By the time we get our check it's 445. Why did this take so long? We have been there before and we are usually in and out in an hour and a half. So they took the fried rice off our bill. Then for tip, it's asking if we want to tip 18, 22 or 22%? Are you being serious? This guy had to constantly be reminded of everything, service was so slow and he had only two other tables. Someone else was picking up our dirty plates and bringing us the meats. I've never had a bad experience here until now. The visit wasn't worth the $180. Food was good except the filet. That had no flavor at all and had to be drenched with the sauces on the table. We have gotten delivery from here before and the portions were bigger during delivery. One other thing to note, the server never even changed out our grill...they usually do that half way through.
