I left this place shook; my boyfriend and I randomly were craving sushi and decided to stop by this spot since it was on the way from errands- it's a small spot with some seating options, nothing too crazy. I can't recall the specific rolls we got (pictured here), but we got their pork katsu and edamame. Edamame was good, you can't really mess up edamame. Their pork katsu was deliciously crisp. Their sushi though? Oh my god, their sushi honestly tastes so incredibly fresh I was shook- the fish is just so buttery and melts in your mouth! This shop has been here for over 10 years and the chef and his family have been providing the same high quality dishes with friendly service since they opened. Tanaka Sushi is locating in a strip mall and is a small restaurant that can seat about 20 people. There is no tableside service, you order at the front and pickup from the counter. There's also complimentary self-serve hot tea on the counter. The staff is friendly and welcoming. I came around 530p on a Saturday and there was a short wait for a seat, but no more than a few minutes before we got a table. By 6p, there were more spots available. Tempura $10 - You get 12 pieces with 2 of them being shrimp. The batter is just ok, and there were too many squashes and potatoes in the vegetable ratio. I prefer a variety - green beans, broccoli, etc. Both the rolls I tried were delicious! They tasted fresh and the rice was nice and chewy. I've come here quite a few times in past years, lovely little restaurant, has a couple seating options but never had any issues finding a spot. You come in and order at the front and take a seat. They'll call out your order and you pick it up at the counter. Food is served super fresh and hot. I like getting the katsu don because the dashi soaks into the katsu and rice, marrying the flavors together nicely. The way it's made just feels like home cooking. Rice is piping hot and fresh! Saba is super delicious and very well made, my mom loved this and says she'd come back for it since other places don't make it well, but this tasted fresh! In the winter they don't have water but they do have self serve tea, and the tea is super hot. It takes awhile to cool down. Wish they did have self serve water available. This place does a nice mix of Korean food and Japanese. I started with some rolls that included avocado rolls and a spicy California roll. They were delicious and I would definitely order them again. I ordered a spicy chicken dish then went ahead and said extra spicy please. It was sooooooo spicy! I'm glad they came through. It was a nice plate of food. I was sweating. I enjoyed the miso soup it came with. There were some small pieces floating in it that I wasn't sure what it was. The cabbage salad was so dry. It had a strange texture. Whenever I'm in the area I always go to Tanaka sushi for their Nabe Udon. Their broth is the best udon broth I've ever had and it's ruined udon at other places for me because I can only think about how Tanaka's is better. Their tofu stew is good too, although not the typical Sundubu Jjigae you would expect so be aware of that if that's what you are wanting/expect. Their sashimi is top quality as well. Got their sashimi party platter and every piece of fish was fresh and delicious. They put lemon slices as garnish but also gives it a slight hint of lemon that's really refreshing when eating the sashimi. They were also really helpful determining the appropriate party tray size since we were looking to feed 9 people and wanted to make sure there was enough sashimi to go around. It's part of a very small strip mall and is a pretty small store so there is a lot of takeout especially now during Covid, but there are some small tables to eat in at this place. According to the menu, this platter included 13 rolls; 2 california, 2 crunch, 2 spicy tuna, 2 dragon, 2 rainbow, 1 santa fe, 1 tekka, and 1 futomaki. It was around $100 for the 80 pieces, which is reasonable and the platter itself was very pretty. We were told that since we didn't place the order the day beforehand our order would take longer to prepare (they would have premade the rolls and put them in the fridge). I'm glad that I didn't preorder a day in advance because the rice might have been hard if it was refrigerated. The rolls were just okay and the fish didn't taste that fresh. We also shared a vegetable/shrimp tempura which was soggy by the time we ate it (~30 minutes later) but I'm sure it would have been much better when eaten fresh. read more

I found this place on Yelp since I've been craving sushi and figured I'll find something in the Naperville area while I'm there. I saw that their overall rating is amazing and the photos of the food looked delicious, so I figured I'd give it a shot. I was initially skeptical because I didn't know what to expect, but I really knew I was in for a treat when DoorDash gave them a badge saying they're one of the most popular places in the area. I placed a pickup order via DoorDash ahead of time so it'll be ready by the time I get there. I ordered two spicy tuna rolls and an order of seaweed salad. These spicy tuna rolls are some of the best I've ever had. Whatever spicy seasoning they use to make this spicy tuna is to die for, it's so flavorful, the spices are perfect, the tuna is fresh, and it's the perfect amount combined with the rice. I'm sad I don't live closer to have this regularly, and now I'm going to have to give myself a reason to go out to Naperville. An order of spicy tuna roll came with 6 pieces. The seaweed salad portion is small in my opinion. However, it too is really fresh and deliciously made. I breathed through my meal, and honestly if it's still good after a 40+ minute drive back to Oak Lawn I can only imagine dining in. This is why I'm not surprised that they're so busy on a Tuesday night for dining in, most of the seats were occupied and more people were coming in when I grabbed my order. My order was also ready for me when I arrived, and the staff was courteous too. There's ample free parking since it's shared with a bunch of other places in a small strip, and it's a first come first serve basis. I highly recommend Tanaka Sushi to anyone in the area looking for sushi and Japanese cuisine. Needed some seafood options for Lent and this was a great spot! You can tell how good sushi is based on how well they make their rice and this spot knows their stuff! The nigiri was fresh and the fish was fresh and flavorful. I especially enjoyed the Tanaka special roll so I will be getting that everytime going forward. The spider roll is another favorite with the soft shell crab inside. If you love mackerel, their grilled Saba was the best I've had in the area. It was juicy and not dry with lots of flavor. We decided to try something different on a cold, rainy Saturday night. We ordered three items for takeout from Tanaka. The Tanaka Tower was delicious, but they used a lot of lettuce as filler. The tempura and fish had a nice mix of sweet and spicy. The Spicy Dragon Roll was tasty, but the rolling quality seemed lower than Wild Rice's. The pieces were cut unevenly, with some pieces far too big to stuff in one's mouth. The Sashimi Rice was pretty good, but also had lettuce filler. The sashimi pieces required a little more bite, whereas some sashimi I've had melts like butter in the mouth. The red sauce was interesting, but was burning my throat. The included miso soup was pretty good. Overall it wasn't bad, but far from exceptional. For this area, I still consider Wild Rice the gold standard. read more
