Happy to be back to one of my all time favorites in Chicago! Happy Lamb Hot Pot in Naperville, IL.
Raymond K.

Greetings: Hot Pot dining is an experience not to be missed and Happy Lamb Hot Pot in Naperville is one of my personal favorites of all time when it comes to Chicagoland eating. This all you can eat masterpiece brings all of the critical elements together time and time again: Incredibly fresh hot pot flavors both in broth options and protein/veg options, quality service, and exceptional value for this unique experience. The highlights read like a culinary dream come true: Endless portions of lamb, beef, and seafood, often anchor my meal. Udon and glass flat noodles are my favorite starches and the veg choices complete dish. I prefer the spicy broth, it's not overpowering and it has a great flavor. The standard broth is is a great bet for those who prefer a broth that's detuned of spice but not of flavor. The restaurant features vaulted ceilings, a great self-service area, and a fun bar that might catch your eye. Staff is attentive and cleanliness in the dining room is a core value at Happy Lamb. Bathrooms, always a make or break topic me, are well appointed, but often lack the same level of upkeep I've always noted in the main dining room. Truth be told, I have only had hot pot at Happy Lamb. However, I stand by my review as it's been one of my favorite eating spots in all of Chicagoland for some time. One day, I will branch out to another hot pot restaurant to broaden my horizons. With that all said, if you are in sure about my qualifications to weigh in, add this to your thinking; Happy Lamb generally has a packed house and line and waitlist to match. Great places generally have a loyal following, and I think this hold true here, too. To avoid the wait, join the waitlist online...if you're able to get a spot as the waitlist can fill up! For now, Happy Lamb Hot Pot remains at the top of my list, running neck and neck with Iron Age in Glenview. I hope you find places that you equally enjoy and can reflect on the amazing effort it takes to bring great food to our tables time and time again. Until next time...tk

My family and I visited Happy Lamb Hot Pot for the first time to celebrate our oldest's birthday, and I have nothing but glowing things to say. The ambiance and overall design of the restaurant are absolutely beautiful--warm, inviting, and perfect for a special occasion. The broth was incredibly flavorful, the meats were delicious, and the selection of vegetables, seafood, and noodles for the hot pot was honestly impressive. There were so many options to choose from, and the warm appetizers were a wonderful added touch. Everything felt fresh and thoughtfully curated. There was a short wait when we arrived, but any potential kid-meltdown was quickly avoided thanks to the tasty snacks available near the check-in area--both of my kids loved them. Bonus points for that. The bathrooms were clean and well stocked, which I always appreciate. Overall, this was a very positive experience from start to finish. My only suggestion would be to expand the waiting area, as it did get a bit congested and made navigating the walkway to exit the restaurant somewhat difficult. That said, it wouldn't stop us from returning--we'll definitely be back.

Pro tip: join the waitlist on the Yelp app. I ALWAYS forget and have to wait once I get to the restaurant. It's been a while since I've been here and there have been some changes, but I didn't mind. You can now get your veggies, noodles, sauces, beverages, and a few other food items from a little buffet style area. Watercress is one of my favorite veggies to have with hot pot, but they didn't have any. I'm not sure if that's permanent or just for the day. In the same area, they also have some fried rice, chicken wings, and little desserts. The service was quick and attentive. The half and half hot pot improved in my opinion. Usually my friend and I have to scoop out the peppers because there would be way too many. The meats looked and tasted great. I stuck with the hand sliced beef short plate and American Wagyu. I enjoyed my AYCE hot pot experience here. I'm hoping for some different veggies on my next visit.

I was here with a group of 4 for dinner. Tip - you're able to add yourself on a waitlist via Yelp instead of checking in at the restaurant and then being added to it. This AYCE hot pot spot is very spacious. I think it can easily fit up to ~100 people. The pricing appears to be the same for lunch and dinner. This was my first time experiencing hot pot and I'm glad I went with people who are pros. The 4 of us chose the standard option and opted for our broth to be half spicy and half classic. We actually wanted to try the cabbage marrow broth but the server was insistent it would be too spicy for us... unfortunately the 'spicy' broth is NOT spicy at all.. it is extremely mild. As far as getting other proteins and veggies there is a separate designated area for it, along with sauces, noodles, dessert, etc. The options were constantly being refilled. The reason why I took off a star - Originally we were seated right away and at 1 spot, but then the host came up to me and said she needed to move us. The server from our original table was unfriendly and did not want to be bothered. I'm actually happy we moved tables... there is a huuuuuge disconnect with service here. It completely lacks, there are staff members everywhere but we weren't approached to see if we needed water refills, more meat, the check, etc.

Our go to place whenever we need a comfort food it's worth the drive.

This is our go to place whenever we need a warm comfort food. Perfect spot after going to Costco.

Our hot pot spread with premium meats.

I had an amazing time here last March when my fiancé and I dined in for my birthday. We were seated and got to pick two broths. It was our first time here and I must say the customer service needs improvement. Our server wasn't helpful at all but we figured everything out because it's not rocket science. We opted for the premium and my fiancé and I weren't fans of the lamb, we enjoyed everything else but that. They have a buffet style arrangement where you select the things you want to add to your hot pot like: vegetables, fish balls, shrimp and a sauce bar where you can concoct your own sauces. There's also fountain drinks and a very small selection of fried appetizers. We ended our hot pot session with ice cream from the fridge and it was kind of boring. I think you guys need a better selection of desserts. Overall, we had a memorable and amazing time together.

It's changed a lot since the last time I visited a couple years ago. I think the changes are great! It used to be that you'd order each round on a piece of paper, and they'd always leave out something when delivering your food, but now it's buffet style for everything but the sliced meat. I really like this because now I can get everything I want in whatever portion I want. They also now have a sauce station. It used to be printed on the chopsticks that you don't need sauce (and to be fair, the broth was good enough to back that up), but dipping my food in my fav sauce mix elevates the experience.

This our second visit and we love the food the ambience and the total atmosphere. It's very upbeat inviting and just an overall wonderful experience. We will be back again and I invite all my friends to please check them out. What a wonderful family and friend experience. Definitely an experience to remember. Service is totally awesome, friendly and engaging. They are all so friendly and welcoming. While we waited, we had drinks and had wonderful conversation with others who were waiting as well. Just a very well put together establishment.

Love garlic beef there. We love to came for their lunch specials. So yummy!!

This has become my go-to hot pot place! You really can't beat the quality of the meat or the happy hour prices. It's truly my happy place, and the all-you-can-eat setup makes the experience even better!

Ask the Community - Happy Lamb Hot Pot

Is the Free Meal for the birthday person still available/offered, as of 2/12/2026?

No its 50% off now

What is Hot Pot?

Hot pot is an Asian concept where a boiling pot of soup base is in front of you and you have thinly sliced meats along with vegetables that you can cook in the broth. This place was amazing because they have AYCE and an open buffet so you can grab…

How much per person for dinner? Is the birthday deal always guaranteed just as long as we bring someone else who pays for themself?

Dinner is $27.99 just bring your id for your free bday dinner , yes bring one person and if you have two people with birthdays bring two to even it out or they don't give you the second person off , I made that mistake once .

I'd like to take my sister here for her birthday, she's a fifth grader does that get the child price or can she do the birthday deal?

Yes, they offer a birthday deal.

What is the birthday deal? Does it work if two people have the same birthday?

The birthday promotion is that if it is the day of your birthday, birthday person eats free as long as you have some sort of photo id. It works even if two people have the same birthday but you must have at least one member of your party who doesn't…

Does the original broth contain nuts?

Most of the broths have a ginger like dried fruit called tsaoko (also called black cardamom) it floats in the broth and looks like a chestnut.

Can I come in that day after my bday for the bday special? I have plans on my actual birthday day.

Nope day of only!

Are any of the meats or broths halal?

Do you take reservations?

i think yes. only for party of 8 and above. below 8 is walk-in

Do you still have birthday offer?

Yes!

Do they offer any kind of dessert?

Not that I know of... they have an ice cream machine by the door for soft serve cones that has been broken for a while. Usually we get drinks from joyee around the corner after dinner..

Do you have vegan broth?

Yes! If you order either the vegetarian original or spicy broth, they are both vegan. Spicy has a lot more flavor, but be careful, it's pretty spicy! Then there are plenty of vegan menu options to get too. My favorites are bean curd rolls, bean curd…

Does this location offer a free meal on birthdays?

They do! You just need to bring your ID. (We've gone multiple times in the past year for birthdays).

Do you guys still have no enoki?

I went Thanksgiving week and there was no enoki.

Is this business wheelchair accessible?

Yes, there were no stairs. There were non-automatic double doors as well.

What time is the weekday lunch price over?

No such thing as a weekday lunch price anymore. They have one set price now regardless of time of day or if it's a weekend or not. So sad.

Is there another number? Seems like nobody is answering the phone when we call

I've seen the phone ring at the front desk, but usually they're busy during dinner rushes.

Are you open for dine in Today February 21st 2020? Are you accepting reservations?

I asked Mr. Peabody and his boy Sherman .... they said yes.

Is it open for sit down now?

Yes

Is this restaurant BYOB?

No, you can order alcohol there

The menu for the Thai food looked pretty similar to most Thai places with the exception of the sushi. I had to get my regular pad see ew. The flavor was good with not too much heat. It was just enough. Not much I would want to change. Maybe I would ask for a little more heat. I also tried a little of my friends pad Thai with beef. The beef was a little tough, but overall not bad. I liked that the dish was not dry at all. From the Thai dishes, I would say that the food is pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way for it, but would come back if I was in the area. Some of the sushi rolls seemed to be a bit pricy in my opinion, but maybe I'll try one next time just to try it.

They changed chefs or something and the food started tasting different. Not bad necessarily, just not as good as it was. Fast forward to present time, this location has randomly closed again without any notice for 8 months. They finally re-opened this week under a new name "Joy Yuan" but inside is exactly the same. Still extremely stark, sterile, and depressing, but it still has Joy Yee branded plates? It's a little confusing. Half of the boba menu is crossed off now too. As for the food, I'd say it's mostly the same but the won ton soup took a turn for the worse. The broth almost tasted dirty oily and burnt but the wontons themselves were good. Usually the broth is super savory and garlicky, but that was not the case. We also ordered egg rolls and the size and presentation of these has changed at least 3 times since they first opened. They're big again but have that odd burnt/oily flavor to them. The chicken fried rice remains the same, the orange chicken was good as well and we decided to try the mixed mushroom chow fun which everybody enjoyed. I was also happy to see that they had the mango passion fruit freeze (add strawberry popping boba) that remains the same and is delicious. I need to try the traditional milk teas to see if they're still the same too. Service is still the same with a lot of the same staff still working there. It's not good but it's not bad, they're just efficient. This isn't a sit down place where you're catered to if that's what you're looking for. I don't know, I'm torn about the new ownership or whatever they did under the new name change. The food seems the same for the most part but it's also not at the same time. Our experience wasn't bad, and I'm willing to try it again but it seems that this place has lost its spark.

The only "problem" we had - and it was OURS - was that we were utterly unfamiliar with the cuisine, or any 'best practices' related to cooking and eating our own Japanese meal. In the end (and we may be wrong!), we discovered that the best way to approach the meal was to create bowls of soup with ingredients that looked yummy, and to proceed from there. The issue with that, was that the flavor of the wagu seemed to be lost in the soup broth... so it seemed immaterial to me if the meat was wagu or some other thicker tasty meat. The crab portions were fresh and immense! I don't usually care for crab or lobster- too much heat loss between kitchen and table, and by the time I've released the MEAT, it's cold. I detest cold food - an abusive childhood. My bride gave me a few bites, dipped in the broth to warm it up. Yummy. We arrived at 6:45 or so on Mother's Day, with reservations. (Thanks!) We were immediately seated. It looked as if Shabu Yo had had a brisk afternoon - many as-yet-unbussed tables - which posed no issues at all - they were still sitting people lickety-split! Our waiter ("Putki"? sp) was very attentive and kind, and really cared about the quality of our experience. In fact, ALL of the staff seemed to evince the same care and attention, no matter how hard a day they may have had. And that brings up a point of realization: my wife and I are die-hard "Foodies". But the most memorable meals we've had have been at restaurants that exhibit care and pride at doing their ENTIRE JOB well - not just food quality, but ambience and the "experience" of dining there. Shabu You definitely met that measure! Heck, I'm gonna add that star! :) My Bride and I agreed that we'd definitely come back to explore further, after some personal research on the cuisine. I'm looking forward to it!

We were barely greeted when walking in and making immediate eye contact with the host but yet nothing was said - no "hello," no "welcome in", no nothing. After an awkward 10-15 seconds of standing there face to face, all that was said was "how many?" in the most irritated and unwelcoming of acknowledgements from the host. Dinner was decent and food and side options were good, although service was lackluster. Nothing really wowed me but I also don't really have complaints of the meal itself. We were sitting and eating for about 45 minutes when my husband asked for the check. We are "early payers," making sure to square away the bill if most of us are finished. We do this as a courtesy to staff so that the minute the last of our family is finished, we don't need to wait for the server to get our bill and wait to pay, we quickly leave so they can turn over the table (my family has owned a restaurant so I understand this need). My one child was not entirely done although 3 of us were. We are still under an hour of being at the table when the host comes over to do a general clean up then says, "now if you can please take the conversation outside, it's busy." Normally I would respect this method as turnover is importance, however, we had been at the table for LESS THAN an hour - not obnoxiously exceeding their 90-minute rule. My husband looked at him and said, "that's really rude, we've barely been here an hour." To which the host responds, "Yea, but don't you see it's busy? I have tables waiting" while pointing to the host stand. My husband and I are shocked at the comment so we end up seeing the owner helping tables and my husband tells him, "We understand the need to free up tables but his delivery was extremely unprofessional. There could have been a better way to have said that, we've only been here for 50 minutes." The owner was shocked himself that his host said that considering we were not there all that long. But the host came back hovering and telling him, "but they paid so I assume they should have left knowing there's tables waiting and they've already paid the bill." Again - shocked at the delivery. The owner was very apologetic but he should consider a better front of the house host/manager. It completely turned us away from ever coming back, it has been over 2 weeks and we still talk about how rude service was. All of that disrespect when here we were trying to make turnover quicker for them by paying right away. We were willing to give them another chance to enjoy a second meal there but not anymore.
