J's Kitchen is in a strip mall which makes it easy to park and locate. They are small/locally owned and halal certified. I had a craving for wonton soup and thankfully J's has it. I ordered online for carry out and the platform was easy to navigate. Once my husband and I arrived at the resto we were greeted by a very kind staff member. Our food wasn't ready but within 5 mins of us being there it was good to go. We tried the wonton soup and chicken dumplings app. Both were on the bland side. Normally I'm used to wonton soup also having noodles and theirs does not. Flavors were OK, felt like both dishes were missing spices. Everything was cooked perfectly though. It's not a pretty joint. There were boxes stacked near the entrance, the tables and chairs were pedestrian at best, and the decor wasn't (if you get my drift). In my experience, this signifies either the place was going to be a shithole to pass up, or it was a serious place to eat, then get out and go somewhere with an atmosphere. Happy to say J's (IMHO) is a serious place to eat. No-nonsense, direct and to the point. When I walked in, all those common chairs I mentioned were stacked upside down on the tables in the way that places do when they are closed. Please dont read any of this as negative-the best Chinese places I've ever been have looked like this-and if you've paid attention to the Travel/Food shows on the TeeVee, the joints in China itself are pretty much the same. On to the food, know this place is a Serious REAL-DEAL Chinese resto. I didn't notice if there were "Occidental" Chinese-type dishes on the carte, (primarily 'cos I wasn't looking for them). What I saw looked yum, and had a hard time making choices, even though I had read the menu multiple times and thought I know what I was going to order in advance. Confessionately, this is a chief feature for my tortured dining self-It's a wonder I even get fed in restaurants (especially the great ethnic ones), due to option anxiety. I zeroed in on "Street Noodles" for starters-wouldn't you? Then went to "Cold Beef Shank" for entreé. The Noodles were fab as was the Shank. The noodles were in a broth. with some hunks of bok choy and ground meat on top. Hearty, still light. The shank had a thin sauce complimenting but not obscuring the beefiness. One bugaboo: the Shank needed a bit of seasoning, and I wasn't going to use soy sauce, as I believed that would have marred the subtle flavors of the Beef. I asked for a salt shaker. It arrived, and I was a little taken back, 'cos it appeared it hadn't been washed in a while, and the salt inside was caked. It occurred to me this condition was present due to the non-use of said shaker. I don't think I've ever asked for a salt shaker in a Chinese resto. I pulled a toothpick out of my "Murse" and broke up the caked NaCl. Applying same to the pieces of Shank, the flavor bloomed and I was a happy boy. Bring some salt packets along when you visit "J's", maybe. It was DELICIOUS! Chicken in Sichuan Sauce - for those looking for the fiery kick of sichuan peppers, this one is for you. Even then, it's relatively mild. But EXTREMELY flavorful. The sauce is not so much a sauce as it is a poaching liquid that pairs REALLLLLLY well with white rice. This was a delight to the mouth. Pepper Chicken Fry - this is more along the lines of the commercial Chinese food we ordered in its look and consistency, but the flavor was amazing and unique. My husband I absolutely loved it. The egg fried rice we ordered with it was simply divine! We also ordered the chicken dumplings, the filling is very plain but flavorful. And we also ordered the crab rangoons - the filling is delicious, not too sweet just perfect! The BEST part of the meal, for me, was the pot of green tea we ordered. (Very strange that a wanna be Chinese restaurant has never encountered an Asian person before and didn't know that one might be American and can speak perfect English.) Family drove like 40min here to try the noodles - J's Kitchen is easy-to-find and park in a small cluster of stores. Upon entry, there's a sign of 5% off using cash. Service-wise - J's is excellent. They offered hot and cold water and were amazing at refilling it throughout the meal without interruption. They explained anything we asked, and honestly, they're ridiculously efficient and professional. Food-wise: Mom got the spring roll and tofu noodle soup. I couldn't try because I didn't want to chance her getting sick, but she said she liked it. My brother and I got the classic Spicy Beef Noodle soup - and it was pretty dang good. Mom remarked that it seemed like a small portion, and it kinda was but it was still enough. The noodles were thick and had the perfect chew - amazing! We wished there was more, but there was an adequate amount for what it was. The spicy beef noodle soup came with two pieces of beef - they're a little smallish but still adequate. One of my pieces was really good - tenderized and delicious. The other was a little too fatty (but honestly expected). The broth itself looked a little oily, but I didn't mind. And the spice level was good enough for me - nothing crazy if you like your throat on fire but definitely approachable by anyone who likes spice. We also tried the seasonal taro duck buns. I honestly didn't see that there was taro in the description so I was surprised to bite into the potatoe-y texture. So the outside bun is gorgeous - slightly sweet and crispy. The taro though, I think was good but doesn't work well with the duck. It makes the dish half-dessert/half-entree, and it's confusing to the tastebuds (at least mine). I would have definitely preferred just duck and buns even if it was smaller - and if they could alternate-layer the duck and dough, that would just be amazing. I can't fault them though as the quality of the food was good, and the value is also good. Just the concept itself may not be for me. Overall, really like J's Kitchen! It's far for us to come more often, but glad we got to try. The lunch special looks realllllly good, but yeah, we live too far to take advantage (lucky for you folks who do!). I thought this place was good. Signature beef noodle didn't disappoint. Nice flavors and fresh made noodles. Beef was tender and easily pulled apart. Also tried the Traditional Chongqing noodle which used very fine and thin noodles which I didn't care much for. For the little one, we did an order of the chicken lo mein, which was very good and I also enjoyed as they use fresh noodles. Probably the biggest disappointment was the smashed cucumber salad. Essentially just chopped raw cucumbers topped with a garlic-y sauce. I love garlic but it'd be nice if the cucumbers were marinated for a bit opposed to being served raw. Another great option for delicious noodles in the Naperville area. The restaurant is a pretty good size inside a fairly busy shopping center though you'll get served pretty quickly when you dine in here. Like much of Naperville, prices are a bit higher than in the Northwest Suburbs but it's in line with other Chinese restaurants in the area. The J's signature spicy noodle soup is pretty similar to the Taiwanese Beef Noodle Soup that you'll find elsewhere. It is a flavorful broth that's not too spicy with fairly generously sized chunks of beef. Though there is Chinese greens, cilantro, and scallion inside this doesn't do too much to temper down the spice if you can't handle hot food. With that said, the mix is just about right for anyone with a low to medium spice tolerance and the noodles have a nice bouncy and slurpy texture to them. The sichuan diced beef stir-fry is probably a better option for those who can't handle too much spiciness in their food. Without a broth and mixed with lots of vegetables on top, this is more like the Vietnamese rice noodle salad except with a more savory sauce and noodles that are the same as the ones you'll find in the noodle soup. I found the beef in this one to be a bit more tender though it was cut into smaller pieces. On this visit I also tried the crispy chicken strips which I was hoping would be similar to dry chili chicken, but it was more like chicken karaage instead. It wasn't the best nor worst appetizer, but I was hoping for a bit more flavor. Overall, good choice for delicious noodles in a casual setting. read more

I met up with some friends for lunch on a Saturday shortly after the restaurant opened and it seemed like we were the first ones dining in for the day. I had the Chongqing traditional street noodle soup (Chongqing noodle in spicy beef and sesame paste, topped with seasonal green, pickled veggies, and peanuts). It was flavorful and had just the right amount of spice. Hubby had the signature beef noodle soup (classic Northwestern-China style beef noodle soup with gentle flavored bone broth topped w/ beef brisket slices, seasonal greens, cilantro, and scallions). Our toddler had a kid's meal and opted for fried chicken pieces, wonton, and steamed broccoli. She didn't finish her food so I had some of her chicken and wontons and they were cooked/seasoned well. The chicken was juicy and not oily. Hubby and I enjoyed our meals but we were still slightly hungry afterwards so I wish our noodle soups came with more noodles. The food itself was ok, I got the lunch special which comes with a main dish and a smaller portion appetizer, and a drink. For the main dish I tried the sichuan beef noodle. They weren't particularly spicy or that flavorful, the beef itself was tender and the the flavor wasn't bad, in fact the more I ate, the better it was, but it just wasn't what it was expecting, maybe they don't use tons of msg, salt, and sugar, like other restaurants and that might be the reason. The appetizer, I tried the ny style chicken wing which came with sweet and sour sauce. It was good, it was deep fried so it was oily, but not too much. He also had marinated tofu. Tofu was very good but looks very different from our last visit. I had braised beef shank slices and Chongqing traditional street noodle. Both were very tasty. Service was much improved than our last visit. Ambiance is still the same. Few more photos of the dishes or nice photos on wall would be helpful. There were several tables when we arrived after 1pm and good amount of take outs while we were there. Lunch special is one starter, one main, one drink for $15-great deal. I stopped by Monday but they were closed. Came back on Wednesday to sample their dinner entrée. The Lamp Soup was super hot in a clay pot and the base was full of flavor and not salty. You can add amount of chili sauce to your preference. The bun is used to dip in the soup to absorb the rich flavor. Not so impressed with Cucumber Salad since it was not smashed to absorb all the favor from the garlic sauce. The Tasty Tofu was good but lack of presentation. Compared to the photo displayed at the dinning table, they almost look like different dish without the top garnishing. The noodles are super chewy and flavorful. The broth was....just okay. I wanted more there. If I could have some more of the schezuan spice in the bowl + a deeper broth flavor it would be awesome. I think they need to add a bit more bone broth to it so that it thickens a bit but other than that, it was a great bowl of soup. Wontons, rangoons, and others: All solid and definitely worth getting. This place is still in business strictly due to the high demand of halal food in the area and their location is good because the demographic is there. I wouldn't even give them a star if I could. As soon as you walk in you're greeted by a very unpleasant odor truly can't even explain what it was. Right in the front they have half of their inventory just stacked boxes for everyone to see, very unprofessional. Clusters of mess all around the restaurant on their counters. It was unbelievably dirty, the table we were seated on was so greasy and not cleaner probably. The floor seems to eat more than their customers, it was absolutely filthy and throughout a little dinner rush there was absolutely 0 cleaning in between people leaving and coming in. The bathrooms were straight up disgusting, I can only what the kitchen looks like. Which speaking of, since they're set up is open you can see the cooks 2 of them had long hair and it was not well kept not a single hat or hair net in sight. Wouldn't recommend this place to anyone, the food was out right BAD I'd rather Panda Express for "Chinese food" as they called it. The chicken was awful, it tasted like it's been sitting in the fridge for a week, and it had a bad smell to it.
