Other than our burnt-tasting coffee, our lunch was fantastic. I love the beautiful space with its brick tile walls. Our server was attentive and personable. My pork ribs were excellent. A bit salty, but it was flavorful and slightly smokey. They are not your average pork ribs due to their crispiness. The potato salad was also excellent, with lots of fresh herbs and just enough mayonnaise and mustard. Lastly, the freshness of the coleslaw served as a nice finish to the dish. read more

We had a surprising and lovely lunch at Tandem. While they featured burgers and sandwiches on their menu, we both opted for salads. Mine was especially interesting: a smoked beets and roasted Brussels sprouts concoction that was really tasty. In fact, I now have to try smoking beets at home now, they were so good. My partner's curry chicken salad was also really good, though not quite as novel. Tandem is worth visiting if you're in Carrboro. It is in the same group of buildings as shops and the Weaver Street Market, making it very convenient. Their building is an old mill, and I love the old exposed brick, giant wooden beams and columns, and old floors. It's full of character. read more

Finally made it for dinner in a Saturday night. As expected, fairly busy and glad we had a reservation. Great location, relaxed, casual and food a little more than that. To start we had the mussels, pork belly and shrimp, both delicious and flavorful. The root salad best of the three we tried with tahini. The beets and brussel sprouts a runner up, the Caesar salad a disappointing third. The romaine seemed more of the outer leaves, which were a little tough, versus the tender hearts. As for entrees, we tried the cod special which was delicious with shiitake mushrooms and potatoes in a beurre blanc, and the short ribs, rich and delicate at the same time. We sampled both deserts, the chocolate pudding cake and mascarpone cheesecake, house made and yummy. Would have loved a third option and maybe we'll see one in the future. One minor complaint are the ceramic plates used, a little chunky for my taste and seemed to detract from the plating and presentation. Always passing by it and finally got a chance to try this place!! Came here for brunch with friends on a Sunday. We had a reservation but Tandem is spacious seem to be able to accommodate lots of walk-ins. We got shakshouka, shrimp and grits, and the Mediterranean omelette. Their shrimp and grits must be the best I've had in the triangle area!! I absolutely loved it!! The portion was also generous, I had leftover for another meal the next day and it tasted just as flavorful as day 1. The omelette was pretty good too, but the portions was much smaller than shrimp and grits. I thought the shakshouka was O.K. good (but I can be particular when it comes to Moroccan dishes since I have family making authentic homemade Moroccan food often). My son ordered the brisket sandwich, I got mussels and a Cobb salad the girls ordered soup and grilled cheese, my wife got the grilled cheese with tomato and fries. Her sandwich was a bit wet but I would think that was because of adding the tomato. my son's wife got the soup of the day with a grilled cheese sandwich. She thoroughly enjoyed her meal as I did. Mains: 72 hour short ribs was melt in you mouth heaven. The lamb shoulder was prepared as more of a soup, I liked it but didn't love it. Portions are hearty. The busboy had to refill our drinks while we watched him talk with a table of two the entire meal. As it turned out, they have a guaranteed gratuity or guest over four. The hope was a nice date night for us. When we arrived we were taken to our seat which, as it turned out, was right next to a large group celebration blocked only by a curtain. We couldn't hear ourselves talk so we ended up at the bar. The bar. We ordered the rib eye, 16 oz., and braised ribs. The ribs turned out as hoped. The rib eye started off ok. After all was said and done, half of the rib eye (8 oz.) was fat and gristle that was inedible. Not worth the $43 for the entree. They did comp a desert, the least costly option to the restaurant. On March 2, my partner and I emailed Emma Sabouh (who according to LinkedIn is the owner of Tandem. After a few back-and-forth emails to discuss details, we agreed upon the following: The reservation would be for a party 20 /Seating: seated outdoors on the patio, or inside the lower-level common dining area, (because we had a few guests that could not walk upstairs to the private dining room, above the kitchen)/ We would confirm indoor or outdoor seating closer to the May date in case weather conditions did not permit us to sit outside/ The event was scheduled for May 13, 2023 at 4:30PM/ Tandem would offer their REGULAR menu Fast forward and on May 13 (the morning of the event) I called the restaurant to AGAIN confirm our reservations and to see about sitting indoors since there was a 60% chance of rain that evening and to notify the group that my partner's mom would be there around 4pm with decorations for the table. First, the young lady that answered the phone, who I had never spoken with, said that we couldn't sit indoors and I asked if Emma was available since I had spoken to her for the last two months (and we agreed that if the weather didn't cooperate we would move inside). After a brief pause, Emma comes to the phone and basically says we couldn't sit inside, but the decorations are fine. I said ok, because at that point it was too late to change the venue location with such a large party. That evening all 20 of our guests arrive, some from out of town, and others closer to the area. I asked my sister to text me when everyone was seated so that my partner and I could be last. That would also allow my partner to make a grand entrance (she has worked hard and deserves this moment). My sister texted me around 4:45pm and says that everyone is there, but that the menu looks different and WAYYY more expensive from what we sent via the graduation invitations. We sent the regular menu with our invitations, because that's what Emma said she would offered). As my partner and I are walking in I'm thinking to myself, WTH is going on? Emma never mentioned that the menu was going to change and she definitely didn't say it would be more expensive. Nevertheless, we arrive onsite and that's when all HELL broke loose, here's why: Emma sat everyone UPSTAIRS, in the private dining area (even after we agreed that we wouldn't be able to reserve that space because some of our guests needed special handicap accommodations. One of the guests had to leave, after she drove from an hour away because she couldn't walk upstairs. The menu was changed/reduced, and Emma never shared with us any of the 3 times we spoke (she didn't even mention it that morning when I called). The prices were marked up, tremendously! A dish that was originally $28 was $41! The 50 times that the two waitresses came into the room to serve us that evening, they saw the cake and never once said "Hey! We have a $75 cake fee if you have your own cake". If someone would've been considerate enough to inform us, we could've simply took it back out to someone's car. Instead they opted to sticker shock us and added the $75 "have your own cake" fee to our receipt. RIDICIOUS! When it was time to pay, the waiter came with one check. I ask if we could split the bill, which was over $1k and she responded, "that's going to take too long" (yea! At that point everyone was livid and I made sure to make a note to call Emma on Monday to let her know about our HORRIFIC experience. Lastly, I decided to call Emma a few days later. After speaking with her, it's pretty apparent that this establishment either lacks the appropriate leadership or perhaps they just simply don't care. What a terrible look to ruin someone's significant graduation dinner. On the call I thought Emma would be apologetic, but she simply said, "go leave a bad review". I told her that I wasn't going to write a bad review I was going to write a truthful one so that people know what to expect if they plan to make large party reservations with Tandem. read more

So I'm in town visiting my friend (already not having the best day) and to celebrate, I thought one of the cocktails looked good but without the aperol and gin, as I thought the Prosecco would be enough so I rarely drink. When I inquired about leaving those out (the aperol and gin), our waitress Jenny looked me in the face and said "then it would just be sugar water?" Ok well maybe to you, since you probably drink every day, but to me Prosecco is fine and just enough for me. For her to sit there and try and argue with me about what I wanted to drink was just kind of bullshit but maybe this place trains their staff to argue with customers. She said "we can't take it out" oh okay yea so it's impossible to just like not turn a bottle upside down? Ok because that makes sense. And on top of that, she didn't try asking me about anything else on the menu, nor did she try and suggest something else. I thought that's how restaurants made their sales? With alcohol? She didn't bother to check on us at. All. She dropped our food off and dipped. If I would have paid for my meal I would have tipped her probably 10 cents. There are nice touches of elegance, like linen napkins and beautiful, hand-made ceramic plates. Although informal, it has a special feel that makes it stand out. The atmosphere is attractive and the staff are friendly and efficient. The food is always imaginative but not so far out there that you wind up with something completely ailen to your palate. This place is becoming a family favorite! It has all the Sat or Sun morning coziness you need for breakfast or brunch. The chefs are incredible, and the food reflects their diverse background and interest in global cuisine. The fried chicken (bone out) eggs benedict on a biscuit is extremely flavorful, and my favorite thing to get for brunch. I sub in potatoes (seasoned with herbs and olive oil) in place of the kale/bacon salad, and the dish is mouthwatering. Their french toast is absolutely delicious, and the Shakshouka is very good, too (although on the stew part of it is more runny/thin than most. There is SO much space here including a lovely wooden back room, but it does help to make a reservation if youre going with a bigger group. I've mostly been here for brunch and once for dinner on a weeknight, and enjoyed their dinner menu as well. This is a safe choice for brunch in Chapel Hill/Carrboro! It is somewhat on the pricier end of regular meal, but you get what you pay for. read more

Came here recently for a date night. Love that restaurant is in an old mill and created a really great atmosphere. They were also adhering to mask mandates and all staff had masks on. Would have loved to sit further into the restaurant, but what can you do. We were sat right beside the window on a very cold evening and the single pane window did not do us any favors. I was quite cold, but thankfully had my trusty hand heater ;) The service and food were exceptional. We started with the pork belly and spring and I could have licked the bowl. It was utterly delicious. I opted for the short ribs and my husband got the lamb shoulder. My serving of short ribs and vegetables was so big, definitely two meals. Except for the guy who implied that we were dining and dashing as we were leaving simply because we got our bill with the dessert (due to slow service). That was rude. Tandem made list of never to return to restaurants! I had made the reservations for six in honor of a friend and family member who had recently passed. A few at our table have limited palates and some food allergies. I had studied the online menu and felt sure there was a good variety for choosing. NOPE!! When we sat down (keep in mind this was a post UNC game evening so there were no other options in town). We were given the menus and thought it was missing a page! Tandem had decided to offer a VERY limited Valentine's menu for the weekend. It was not a special menu except for a $15 cocktail. Their menu was simply a very paired down version of what they normally offer (which never changes). The limited menu was not posted anywhere. The one item our person with allergies was going to order (the soup) was listed incorrectly and he was offered lobster bisque. The dinner for 5 was over $200. We had no cocktails and had mixed together some appetizers that were able to be picked through. Our waiter apologized and said other groups had opted to leave because the menu was so limited. There were no other options in town. I have written the restaurant but do not expect a reply. We will not be back for 40 years! Thankfully we have many other great options locally. read more

This restaurant was cute. We dined in for dinner and had a really good experience. I started off with a beer, I liked that the draft list was all from NC. I also had a cocktail, the smoke and mirrors. Unfortunately it was awful and I do not recommend it. My husband and I split the deviled eggs, goat cheese "briwats", cauliflower and roasted salmon next. Our favorites were the goat cheese "briwats" and salmon but they were all good. You should definitely save room for dessert because the chocolate pudding cake was amazing, I loved the coffee ice cream that it was paired with it. My mom and brother were visiting from out-of-town. We knew it was graduation weekend and restaurants would be busy. We had reservations at multiple restaurants and chose Tandem because of the rather large menu and relatively affordable prices. The only menu available to view on their website was their standard dinner menu. When we arrived, we found out that there was a special menu for graduation weekend that had been considerably condensed and all prices were inflated. $30 for salad is certainly not what we had in mind. We felt misled to say the least. On top of that, servers were overworked. We were packed in like sardines on their patio and servers kept bumping into my chair all evening. The service and ambience were 5's. The main entre I ate, on the otherhand, was a 3. The issue: I love short ribs and know them well. The short ribs I received didn't have the rib/bone in it....which I found peculiar (short rib-less??). This bothered me a little, but then I cut into the meat that had presumably been doing something for 72 hours expecting it to fall off the non-existent bone....and found the meat to be tough and fatty. My rec: if you're gonna have short ribs on the menu, buy the ones with ribs included and prepare them as advertised - 72 hours; then meat will fall off the bones and melt in your customers mouths - and my 3 will turn into a 5 - guaranteed!!! read more

Was so excited to try this place tonight with my girlfriend. The ambiance is great- there is indoor and outdoor seating. We made a reservation for a Thursday at 7pm and probably didn't need to but we were seated almost immediately. The outdoor patio is perfect. The wait staff was amazing. Unfortunately, the food was just okay. The prices are pretty high for the amount- appetizers were 15 dollars on average and main plates ranged from 25-40 dollars. We split 2 appetizers and a main course and our total was 60. The feta and bread app we got was not worth it. It came with 6 small very hard and thin slices of a baguette and a dip. It was just okay at best. The Brussel sprout and beet app we got was delicious and I would order this again, but for 15ish dollars maybe not. The main dish was Japanese eggplant and it was also just ok. The overall flavor was good but wasn't a lot of food and cost around 27 dollars. Overall, we were disappointed with the amount of food we got for the price and would have to think about coming back again. Parking is easy thankfully and there were plenty of spots. Tandem catered our reherasal dinner, cocktail hour, and wedding reception, and they did an excellent job. The food was a priority for us, so we were willing to spend a good portion of our budget on it. Emma was thoughtful and very prompt to respond to emails. In the planning stages, I generally felt well cared for. There were only two times when I had difficulty: Several months before the wedding, we were told that we would be able to rent bowls from Tandem for $12 a piece and steak knives for $2 a piece. I had gotten quotes from rental companies, and with delivery fees it seemed to even out, so I decided to go with Tandem's rentals. A few weeks before the wedding, I asked Emma for a final quote so that we could make the remaining payment. In this new quote, the bowls were suddenly $20 and the steak knives were $2.50. When I asked her why the price had increased (with no prior notice), she stated that "the cost of the product has increased" because the bowls were from Asheville, and somehow the rental for steak knives had increased as well? With only a few weeks until the wedding, I felt blindsided, because time was running short to make different arrangements. I ended up buying 30 bowls of a similar size from Costco and selling them back to my venue, because Tandem's price change was just ridiculous. The other difficulty with communication happened only a couple of days before the wedding, when Emma asked for a list of our rentals (most of which were provided by our venue), and we found that we were missing many items that would be necessary for the food service. This was very stressful for me, and I wish that the conversation had been initiated earlier. However, in the end, Emma was able to provide the needed rentals for a reasonable price. For the rehearsal dinner, we had a buffet for 15 people with salad, Moroccan chicken, 72-hour braised beef, salmon with dill beurre blanc, smoked Japanese eggplant, seasonal vegetables with couscous, and mini desserts (cheesecake, chocolate mousse, strawberry cake). The quality of this buffet was OUTSTANDING. I could not have asked for a better array of dishes; truly, there was not a single item that was not above average in flavor. They delivered the trays on time, and the food stayed warm throughout dinner. The cocktail hour was also impressive. We had three passed appetizers: spring rolls, duck confit figues tartine, and eggplant caviar bruschetta. They were all delicious, but it seemed like the eggplant bruschetta was not passed around as much as the others, because we had a TON of leftovers and guests complained that they never had the chance to try it. We also had a raw bar with fresh oysters (sweet and delicious!!), shrimp cocktail, and mini crab claws. The crab claws were quite expensive, but they tasted soggy and not fresh, so I wish that we had not gotten them. For dinner, we had three plated options: filet mignon, bouillabaisse, chicken, and butternut squash risotto. Everything was delicious except for the bouillabaisse, which was unfortunately what I had ordered. I should have just used one of Tandem's signature or suggested dishes for the seafood entrée, but my family likes bouillabaisse, and we had a French cuisine theme going, so we had requested it specifically. The fish was cooked well, but as a white fish I didn't think it was very flavorful. The mussels, clams and shrimp were all overcooked, mushy, and stringy. The broth had a nice, strong saffron flavor, but I just had this sense that something was missing. Looking back, I should have recognized that bouillabaisse is difficult to execute at scale. However, I had also trusted Tandem to make every dish equally excellent, as they had promised. All in all, I am very happy that we went with Tandem. Looking back, I would have done a few things differently (would not have gotten the crab claws or the bouillabaisse), but as everything else was spectacular, I think we made a good choice in hiring them for our wedding. read more

We made a reservation for a Thursday night and were given the choice to sit outside or inside. We're glad we picked outside because the patio was beautiful. The servers were friendly and prompt and made recommendations. The biggest disappointment, and reason for the low rating however, was the food. This restaurant is expensive- apps range from $12-20, salads $15-20 and entrees $30-50. For the price and the atmosphere, I'd expect excellent dishes. We ordered the feta appetizer which was disappointingly small with hard stale bread and maybe 2 tbsp worth of feta. The brussel sprout and beet salad was good, but again quite small. Finally, the eggplant entree was plated beautifully but consisted mostly of crunchy couscous and sauce and little eggplant. Overall, I'd rather explore a different restaurant than give this spot a second chance and it's unfortunate because I wanted to like it. read more

I have had Tandem on my list for a while to visit.i knew they had a Valentine's menu which looked good, but I was eyeing the Lamb on the regular menu. The regular menu was limited and no lamb as they were primarily prepared for the Valentine's menu. Ok... I may have to go back. The other option, Salmon, was one of the options. My second visit to Tandem and I was disappointed. We had a reservation and the service was very very slow for a restaurant that was not very crowded on a Saturday night at 7:30. We ate outside in the ambiance was lacking. Our server Hanna was friendly but very slow and not very attentive. The food was only average. The cod and the salmon were very good but the burgers were dry and tasteless. The short ribs were OK but awkwardly presented in La Creuset bakeware that was very heavy and awkward for the table. Our party of 6 left very underwhelmed. Tandem is on the expensive-ish side and your money could be better spent elsewhere. read more
