Found this place from the reviews on yelp. We were going to go to Delhi palace which is our go to, but were sad to see they were closed and moving to a new location. We wanted a lunch buffet and saw on the menu it was offered. Place was pretty busy on a Sunday afternoon. Great lunch buffet options. A lot of places tone down the flavor and spice and offer very run of the mill dishes but I pleasantly surprised. Of course they had the regulars but offered fun stuff as well such as goat! The tandoori chicken was packed with flavor and the tikka masala options were pretty spicy. They also offer poppa chips which were really yummy. Service was great and very very attentive. I have been going to Tandoori Chef for several years now and its one of the better Indian places in Bergen county. They have improved significantly over the years and specialize in north Indian tandoori dishes. Good appetizers to try are Chicken Chops, Chicken Seekh Kebabs and Tandoori Chicken. For main course, Butter Chicken and Goat curry are good. They make a decent Goat Biryani as well. Dal Makhani is not authentic but tastes good. You cant go wrong with their butter naan and Tandoori Paratha. The lunch buffet on the weekend has a decent spread. Service is usually fast and decent. I love this place, the price is right and the portions are too. At work, we order from here once a week and I always try something different and have been blown away every time. The flavors, the curries, the naan, oh my! I love it so much I would marry it if I could. My co-workers look at me in pure shock(or lust) when I am done devouring my plate of Lamb Vindaloo and have red sauce dripping from both corners of my mouth. Also, I am very familiar with Indian food as I lived off of Newark Avenue in Jersey City and there were Indian restaurants and Bollywood DVD stores on every block so it has become a comfort food for me. I was very impressed with their lunch buffet and at $8.95 i thought it was surreal. Very good selection of vegetables and meat. The sauces and chutneys available brought the whole meal together. I loved the burst of spices in my mouth. The naan was fresh, hot and served table side. Perfect to pick up all the great sauces off my plate. I will definitely be back for lunch. read more

Came here for dinner tonight. Ordered out the past two times, but wanted to eat the the restaurant because it's our friend's last night of sleeping over before we bunker down for exams and move out to brooklyn. We were the first to walk in for dinner and then another couple followed. Few people came in and out to pick up delivery. Music was playing in the background and the A/C was set so I didn't need my jacket (I get cold easily, so it may be hot for the warm-bloods out there). We ordered saag paneer, chana masala, vegetarian samosas, and regular naans to share between the 3 of us. The plating was nice, and I love it more than ordering food to go. My friend asked for the naan to be uncut (so that it wouldn't cool down &harden fast), but that didn't end up happening nor did we complain. Food was great. Waiter lady came by for water refills and to check if we needed more rice. Yelp check-in you can get any dessert. I ordered the galub jamun and it came out as 4 tiny balls soaked with syrup. Yum!! I have a major sweet tooth and friends are surprised that I don't have diabetes or cavities. For the price, it's ok. I mean indian food in general is expensive because of the spices I guess compared to other cuisines. Overall, we came out stuffed and happy, so let's see how studying goes tonight. read more

This was my first time ordering from Tandoori Chef. I'm happy to say the food and the service is great! I had the paneer pakora and tandoori chicken. The paneer was tasty but a little drier than expected, but the chicken was moist deliciousness that made my taste buds sing. And my lovely meal was followed by Kheer (rice pudding with saffron and cardamom) for dessert. It was wild! Just fabulous. Makes me regret I don't start my meals with dessert first. Delish! This is my favorite place for Indian food in Bergen County. The dishes, and I have tried many of them, are incredible. The portions are generous. The prices are perfect. This place is easily one of my favorite places to eat. A few suggestions : Their saag is fantastic. I like the lamb the best. Came in on a lazy monday to fulfill my Indian food craving and am so glad I found this gem nearby. The food was amazing. I probably shouldn't write this review now as I'm sooo full that i cant even remember what I ate. :) We had veggie pakoras as an app, which were great as they were tasty and not oily as some places. I had the chicken tikka masala, excellent! We tried 2 other entrees, one of potatoes and cauliflower sautéed with rich spices and the last a chicken dish with spices onions and bell peppers. The service was impeccable. Everyone was very friendly. My only complaint was that the ambiance was a bit awkward. They were playing no music which kinda forces us to eat our meal hush in order not to disturb other patrons. read more

I have been wanting to try this place for a while now. I love indian food... well i love good food in general where ever it is from :) So I just went there for lunch today for their lunch buffet. I have to say that the food was pretty damn good. There was this rice meatball dish in some kind of curry sauce.... absolutely loved it. The only reason i am giving this place 3 stars instead of 4 is because the buffet selection is not as vast as some other places I have been. I have tried many places in this area and it's better than the other places I have tried in this area. If you are on main street definitely give this place a try. We had some Indo Chinese and North Indian food. Both of them were simply great. In the end I had ras malai for my dessert which was heaven. Well, I have experienced better Indian food than what they serve. Its just okay, not so good. They add too much fatty butter(dalda) in food and soda in rice that will make you feel full. Just put the Dal makhani or butter chicken or chicken hydrabadi in refrigerator, you will see a thick layer of butter. They had good south indian joint with this restaurant but they closed it. read more

Came here last night with 2 friends for the special Wednesday night buffet. It was $14.95 and totaled $16 with tax (we ordered no additional drinks). The waiters were polite, the atmosphere is cozy (dimmed lights with ethnic music playing in the background). There was no wait which was awesome because we were starving. The buffet had a nice selection of everything! The meat was tender but I wish some of the foods were served a bit hotter. They had fresh fruits and other desserts to top it off. Particularly, I thought the naan was perfect! We were stuffed by the end of our stay (2.5 hours of eating and talking) and the staff continued to be considerate :) I would highly recommend this place! I wanted to order for delivery and they kept asking me to add more items to make it $30. I mentioned that their website states minimum of $25 for delivery. The response was "for your area it's $30." Reeling, I said I wanted to cancel my order, and they didn't waste any time saying "Ok, bye." Nice. I really liked their food, but they didn't even work with me, like I could take it or leave it. I've eaten at this restaurant multiple times in the past and have been pleased. The staff's attitude is neutral, at best, but the food was always very good and somewhat reasonably priced. Tonight was different. Same good tasting entree but the poppadoms were different and had that "previously made in a different kitchen" look and taste. They were cheaper. The entrees were more expensive, by a couple bucks, than they were 3 months ago. A simple Butter Chicken and Tandoori Naan (great tasting!) was almost $20 with NJ tax. I had taken 2 co-workers to Tandoori Chef and was becoming a bit disillusioned, during this visit, until a baby roach crawled across one of my co-worker's plate. The first time I eat their food was at the Hackensack Street fair. I was walking around in the tandoori chef had some tables and food outside I had about four of their big samosas and I really liked it. Gave this place two stars for cleanliness and fast service. It might get one star for the food. Save yourselves and your stomachs (Even the naan was undercooked). My Goan Chicken was not Indian food. I am by no means an expert but have eaten enough Indian food to know that the food served was not it. My husbands food tasted like vodka sauce with the cheese cubes. Came here for the lunch special on a Sunday afternoon. The parking isn't great in the area, but I was lucky enough to find a spot after a few minutes. My friend and I arrived a few minutes after it opened, and we were able to be seated right away, even though theres not too much seating inside. It wasn't really clear how the set up worked, but we ended up going right up to the buffet. They have all the dishes labeled, and the food was really delicious. If it were just a bit clearer or someone let us know we could just go on up, I think it would be even better! read more

I ordered takeout from here. It definitely came out to be a pretty expensive meal for the amount of food we actually got but it was actually really tasty! I got the chicken tikka masala and my mother got one of the shrimp and spinach dishes. The naan was really good (love, love naan!). My wife and I come here on occasion for their daily lunch buffets. It's a great deal, $9 or $10 for a good variety of Indian cuisine. The mango lassi's are delicious as well and I highly recommend them. Naan always comes out fresh and warm (though you probably have to pay extra). We've only been here for lunch, but will try it for dinner. Staff is attentive and polite and will try to answer any questions you may have. read more

Go for the buffet. Leave with a bunch of entrees to eat over the next few days. The buffet is a good deal, $11.95 per person, but leans towards the meat side so if you've sworn that off, you'll be limited to a few dishes. Those few dishes, however, are so frickin' good that it won't matter that you can't eat everything. The buffet also includes yummy gulab jamun for dessert. Seriously though: grab a menu, and place an order for whatever entrees you want to eat for breakfast the next day, lunch at work, and dinner the next night. I've been to Tandoori Chef a few times and have always had very enjoyable meals and they are my go to place in Jersey for Indian food. Their food is very tasty, their portions generous and pricing is reasonable. I'm not terribly familiar with Indian food and honestly don't remember the names of the dishes that I've tried there but I've never gone wrong whether it was grilled chicken, vegetarian dishes or tasty little samosas. I've only done dinners so far but they have inexpensive lunch buffets and on Wednesday night dinner buffets (I believe for $8.95) which I'm going to try. Overall, Tandoori Chef is a good choice and you'll likely keep this place in your regular dinner rotation. read more

I've been back here plenty of times mainly because of the Lamb Kofta. The lamb is soft and well prepared. The best part is really the curry sauce that goes with this dish. It is just the right amount of spice and creaminess. Perfect with the garlic naan. Usually the Lamb Kofta is available at dinnertime. One time we showed up for lunch and the Lamb Kofta was not ready yet so we were quite disappointed. It's not one of the items on the buffet menu so you would have to order the entrée separately. Normally we get the Saag Paneer, the Lamb Kofta, and the Chicken Curry or sometimes the Chicken Tikka Marsala. All of the dishes are very good. My boyfriend and I are just partial because we really like their Lamb Kofta. Food aside, the décor of the place is decent but not fancy. The waiters are a little bit slow to respond sometimes but they are generally nice. Come here for the food, not the ambiance. read more

This review is long overdue. We had a crazy craving for Indian food after watching the movie A Hundred-Foot Journey. We wanted to eat regular things we know we like (curry and rice, etc) but also try new items. This was the best place to go because they have a buffet with at least seven different entrees, plus rice, salad, and dessert. We had Papadam with Mint and Tamarind Chutney, Matar Paneer, Daal Makhani, Butter Chicken, and Tandoori Naan and loved, loved, loved everything. We drank Mango Lassi which was very refreshing. The servers were very nice and helpful. The following weekend we ordered for delivery and everything was great too. We have gone to the buffet two more times and will keep going. This place is fantastic. delivery from Hackensack to Oradell is questionable with some places, but they delivered our (admittedly large) order no problem. I alloted an hour and of course Murphy's Law they arrive in about 30-35 minutes. The delivery guy was super nice. Now on to the food- when can we eat it again? Walked in one Saturday at 12 Pm. They were still setting the buffet up. The food was really authentic and when I say authentic I mean it's how we would cook Indian food at home. Nothing was excessively creamy or fatty. Ambience was ok and casual. It's small place which accommodates about 30 people.
