Waited an hour for take out, which is not a huge complaint. Food was soggy, bland, and skimpy. 5 very small pieces of chicken, Barry a single breast, and not even remotely spicy (which I asked for). Service was even worse. No one says hello, they have no courtesy, and won't even look you in the eye to tell you someone else will be right with you. I want my money back. Yum! Tandoori Grill is a fave of boyfriend's family and I was happy to finally give this Boulder staple a try. My boyfriend's dad, who had been a regular at Tandoori Grill before moving across the country, was met with open arms by the staff. Five or six people remembered him by name and came by to say hello. They even took a picture together! I had all of the neighborly feels. Onto the food! I let the fam order, as they seemed to be the experts (turns out they were). We started out with the kabob sampler, which was delish--a plate of chicken tikka, ginger chicken, and lamb boti kabobs. We then moved onto some main dishes and split a couple orders of saag panir and chicken curry with basmati rice. Each dish was so flavorful and comforting--perfect for a chilly Colorado night. Prices were pretty good--an appetizer, two entrees, rice, and two drinks will run you about 50 bucks (this fed three people). Portions are generous and the food is heavy, so you'll be sure to leave full. I'll definitely be back! read more

Saved the day! I had never ordered from Tandoori Grill until today. I called them in a state of emergency. I had ordered catering from another Indian food restaurant for 11:30am for 30 people for a work lunch. I get an email right before the meeting that the other company cancelled my catering. I frantically start calling other companies to see if they can cater with ZERO notice given. Luckily, Tandoori Grill said they could make it happen, they would just need 45 minutes. It was a miracle. I picked up the food, they were so generous with the portion size, so accommodating to my immediate request and so kind when I rushed in like a madman. They were able to save the work meeting lunch and went above and beyond. So thankful for them today! read more

I've been to this place several times in the past, because the food is pretty good. But the service here sucks. I placed a to-go order tonight which included the vegetable pakora. When I brought it home, I realized that they didn't give me any of the sauce which is supposed to come with it. So I called them and mentioned that I didn't get any sauce with the vegetable pakora. The person who answered the phone's response was "ok".... no apology or attempt to fix the problem. So then I asked her to confirm that the vegetable pakora was supposed to come with a sauce. She said it was, I again repeated that it didn't and therefore I was given an incomplete order. I asked them to fix the problem by either delivering the sauce to me or refunding my vegetable pakora order, as it was incomplete. She told me that they don't do deliveries and won't refund my order because "the sauce is complimentary"... What does that even mean?! No, the sauce is not "complimentary", I paid for it. It is included in the price of the item that I bought! Basically what they said would be similar to if I bought a hamburger from a burger restaurant and after bringing it home to eat, realized that there was absolutely no sauce in there. And then was told by the restaurant that they wouldn't give me a refund because "the sauce is complimentary"... Now I've paid for this vegetable pakora that I don't even want, since I don't have any sauce to eat it with.... But the restaurant DID generously offer to give me EXTRA chutney sauce the next time I order vegetable pakora. That was nice of them! But wait, they just told me that the sauce is "complimentary". So wouldn't that mean that I should be getting extra chutney sauce anytime I want for free, anyway? So basically to make up for their screw up, they offered to give me something for free... that is already free.... hmmmm. Needless to say, with that kind of attitude towards their customers, I won't be ordering vegetable pakora from these guys again. Or anything else for that matter... read more

We came here last week and tried to order the tandoori wings. They were out, and as a consolation prize our waiter brought us an order of tamarind shrimp, and HOLY SHIT THESE THINGS WERE GIANT. I'd never seen shrimp so huge in my life! You had to seriously, literally cut them with a knife into bite size pieces, like a steak. Each shrimp yielded at least 6 bite size pieces. And they all managed to be cooked thoroughly and coated with delicious, beet-red, finger-staining tamarind sauce. PLUS, we got them for the happy hour price of $3 since they were out of what we wanted. Amazing. Maybe they have a giant tank in the back full of freaky genetically engineered shrimp injected with shrimp growth hormone and fed steroids in their fish food. And even if that's the case, I'm not sure I'm complaining. read more

In all honesty, I could indulge in a good Indian lunch buffet and dine at an Indian restaurant for dinner every single day without tiring of the tantalizing, aromatic Eastern cuisine. When I discover a restaurant at which I would gladly partake in all these meals, I must share that discovery with the rest of the Indian food lovers in the world. Or, at least, in Colorado. Tandoori Grill was one of the last Indian restaurants in Boulder that I needed to check of my list. I finally made it there for dinner the other night and discovered what I was missing all this time. Their food selection contains something for everyone- whether you are paleo, vegetarian, vegan, gluten-free or someone who eats everything or hardly anything. I finally found my request for maximum spice honored- generally, waiters take one look at my pasty Americanness and assume that when I say "crank up the heat" I mean "mild at best." My vegetable curry, however, packed a punch that lingered long after the server took my empty plate. The service is quick and the staff friendly and knowledgeable. I don't know what is it about boulder and Indian food. I still haven't found a place that serves authentic Indian food. Am I asking for too much? May be yes. But for the price we pay at the restaurants, I have a right to ask for the right kind of food. I don't like their over colored tandoori chicken. It doesn't even taste like tandoori. [ tandoori is used for any dish cooked on fire in clay ovens] I can understand that- because of the local palette they make the dishes low on heat, but what is Indian food without spice? Why doesn't the flavor of cinnamon, nutmeg, coriander, cumin,peppercorns and all other spices shine through the dishes? It could just be me -- But I am still looking for an Indian restaurant that serves good food. the three stars in this review are for dinner and not the buffet. Perhaps the worst Saag and vegetable curry I've had in Boulder, New Delhi or New York. When I told the server my opinion of the vegetarian dishes, he just snatched them off the table rather than offering us a new dish. Last night I had a truly incredible meal here. It was total chance, too, because I went to Taj to get the buffet at about 9pm, but they were closing early because "tonight we clean the carpet." I love how people from other cultures don't get all stressed about doing things that upset the flow of business. They're just like, oh.. we're gonna clean the carpets. Whatever. Anyway, I continued down the line to Tandoori grill and was initially disappointed to find that they didn't have a dinner buffet. But my disappointment and years of dumb-shit reliance on buffets at Indian restaurants quickly melted away when I tasted my food. I had mulligatawny to start, and the flavors were incredibly delicate and subtle. When Indian food is really prepared well, I always find myself doing this thing of trying to pinpoint a certain flavor but never really being able to. Like you're chasing something around that keeps rounding another corner just as you catch a glimpse of it. I then got the tandoori chicken. Nowhere to be seen was that dense, somewhat sweet red coating that you usually see on tandoori chicken. It came sizzling on a metal platter, fajita style, and was actually beautiful to look at, the skin flecked with the green, black, and brownish yellow of the spices. The flavor was unreal. I have never - I repeat never - tasted tandoori chicken like this. It was melt-in-your-mouth tender, and again had this combination of spices that was both seductive and elusive. It's the little things, too. The rice was served in a large bowl, and a deep inhale above it brought... I don't know - cinnamon? cardamom? something fucking heavenly into my brain. I ate at least five bites of the rice plain just to savor it. But then I got into the raita - that salty, peppery yogurt condiment the Indians use to cool off their mouths when eating spicy food - and it was over. An ice-cold bomber of Taj lager direct from India at my side, I was practically swooning. The waiter - while maybe not the world's most polished server (who cares?) - was super friendly and really responded to my enthusiasm about the food. He told me that they don't really like doing a buffet but have no choice because that's what the American dining public expects. They refuse to do a dinner buffet because the chef feels that it compromises the food too much. Amen to that, brother! One other point to be made about this restaurant. The chef is Indian. Like, from India. Many of the other Indian restaurants in Boulder (including Taj) are owned by Nepalis (in fact I'm pretty sure that Buddah Thai at 28th and Iris is run by Nepalis as well). Nothing against Nepalis - in fact if you want to have a mind blowing meal, go have the lunch buffet at Kathmandu in Nederland - fucking amazing. But although Nepali food is similar to the northern Indian food you get at most Indian restaurants in the States, it's only similar. The spicing is really different, and when you get a chef who is Indian and who knows his binnis -- man, you are in for a major mothafucking treat. Peace read more

My girlfriend has always picked up take out from this place, but I have never. One day she asked me to pick it up on my way home. I have been to so many different places immediately around it, but somehow never really paid attention to it. Once I walked in I felt I was in an authentic Indian restaraunt. We ordered the lamb samosas (which actually tasted like lamb), the garlic naan bread (super fragrant and delicious, as well as many other items I cannot remember how to spell ;) I did have to wait about 5 minutes to be attended to, but once I was the gentleman was extremely polite and very quick. I forgot to mention how accommodating they are of special diets. I often order the lamb saag without dairy. Usually comes with it, but not a problem. Also, on some days of the week, they make gluten-free bread (I think it's poori). It is so nice to be able to have yummy bread to dip. Tandoori Grill serves up exactly what you'd expect from a formulaic Indian restaurant located next to the local grocery store. One deviation is the price which is suitably adjusted for Bouder ;) I shared a couple family style entrees (1 curry, 1 vindaloo) both "medium" hot. The vindaloo was very tasty and the heat was perfect. Next time I'll counterbalance the restaurant's indifferent service and awkward ambiance by going full-fledged strip mall and trying the lunch buffet. read more

I love this restaurant. First, the flavors are spectacular. Just perfect. Rich and complex. Mild has just a hint of spicy, medium is freakin spicy and I've never tried hot. The curries are so scrumptious... my personal favorite is the chicken tikka masala, but I've tried many of the others, including most recently the korma and it was just as good. The saag paneer is amazing - perfect cheese, spot on flavor. And even the chai is great! Not too sweet (my biggest pet peeve with chai - and I've got those middle eastern roots and make my own), and they even offer you one free refill. The rice is perfectly cooked and spiced, and their naan breads have just a hint of char. Both the regular naan and garlic naan are great. I'd also like to point out that they are just about the most consistent restaurant I know in Boulder. I have never had anything but scrumptious dishes there over the years. They have a really good lunch buffet as well. The only minor issue is the location, which for me is on the other side of town, and it is located in a strip mall. But I've come to view it as part of its charm, and they do a pretty good job with the interior, so once you're inside it's a moot point anyhow. The 5 stars go to their chicken tikka massala (mild)- absolute stellar Indian food, especially for someone who is not on good terms with hot food (like me). I was so happy with it and having come all the way from the UK to find good Indian on this side of the pond I know I'll be back to this place soon. This was my first time at Tandoori Grill. Stopped by with a colleague for lunch after a meeting. Ambiance is OK, not spectacular; I guess I'm just used to India's in Denver. The lunch buffet is extensive, with a number of dishes backed by Basmati rice.. There are also salads and a selection of chutney's to enhance your dishes. The Naan bread at the table was excellent. I had the Saag; not the Saag Paneer I am used to having. I missed the cheese cubes in a typical Saag Paneer. Next, I found beef? meatballs. I can't think of another Indian restaurant that carries beef dishes. Next, was the Daal, a slightly spicy chicken dish, and a couple of pieces of Tandoori Chicken. Again, I am used to having Tandoori chicken with a reddish, paprika finish; these had a brownish tint. Both chicken dishes were the highlight of my meal. Service was rather detached. During our time, no one offered to refill our Chai tea. And the wait for a check took some time as well. Overall, I found my experience merely "OK." The food above average. I will try this place again to compare experiences. For now, I think I prefer the surly waiters & top notch food at India's. As usual, I feel overstuffed after an Indian lunch fest. read more

Probably the best way for me to describe the Tandoori Grill is serviceable. That is not at all a put-down. That means that Tandoori Grill has consistent quality of food and service. You know exactly what you're getting every time you go there. It's never blown me away, but it's never disappointed me either. I used to work across the street, and we'd come here often for lunch meetings or just to come here. They have a solid buffet with a nice selection of chutney. They don't have that many options, though. It doesn't compare to The Taj... but then again, nothing really does. read more

This review is for takeout only. I was amazed the other day when we had take out because it was super expensive, and there was not much food. We ordered four dishes for four people to share, one lamb saag, one saag paneer, one aloo gobbi, a chicken vindaloo and three orders of naan (based on the recommendation of the lady on the phone). They gave us tons of rice, but skimped on everything else. The food came in tiny containers, and the meat dishes only had about three pieces of meat in them. For about $14 a plate we should have had leftovers. But alas it was all eaten, and even though we had two orders of saag, there was none left. We are small people and not big eaters either! There was little to no naan bread either, even though we had three orders. I think that they skimped on our order because they were packed that night, and the hostess said my food was running late because of the numerous large tables. Maybe eating in is a better deal, but there are much better places for the price, as the food is good, bu not as good as it gets. (and all of the other indian places, naan comes with your meal.) read more

I had a drink -- whose name I can't remember, that had pomegranate flavoring -- which was exotic-tasting, but too tiny to give me a good buzz before our food arrived. We split the onion kulcha naan, the chicken masala, and the chicken korma. The onion kulcha was very tasty. It had plenty of onion and flavor, and was crispy on the bottom, much unlike the microwaved naan we had at Kathmandu in Nederland. The korma was very delightful -- buttery and flavorful, and it was the better out of the two entrees. The masala was pretty disappointing. It lacked flavor and depth. I have had the Masala, Korma, Saag (BEST SAAG EVER!!!!). Really great food! In the past I've lived in Sunnyvale, CA which is where many silicon valley Indians settled, providing me with a great selection of restaurants. Tandoori Grill isn't bad at all! Not the best indian I've had, but much better than the Mexican I've had in Boulder so far. Even with low representation, we seem to be doing ok with pho and Ethiopian food around here. Anyway, back on topic. I'm a particular fan of curry dishes and have been happy with what I've ordered here. By the way, I can't remember if I've ordered "hot" yet, but my impression was that the spice scale isn't too ridiculous and you probably won't end up in the hospital if you order 'hot' - but you better mean it. The nann is good, I've had plain and the garlic - and unlike at least one other reviewer, it was hot and fresh. They do a good job at providing both eat-in and take-out service. Seems to be that they do a lot of take-out. One warning - pile on an appetizer, two entrees and some nann = a big bill. This is the best place to go for Indian in boulder county! They are consistent, their food has great texture and flavor and the owner is so nice! I love Chana Masala and honestly this restaurant does it better than anyone in the game. Their naan is fantastic as well as their pakora, samosas and kheer. All top notch. Oh damn, a $10 lunch buffet. While they may not have a whole lot of choices what they do have is very filling and absolutely delicious - you also get a free basket of naan as well. My favorite dishes were their vegetable korma and saag, although the tamarind chutney tasted pretty good paired with their various dishes. I just went to Tandoori for the first time and have very little experience with Indian food. My food was great easily a five out of five for the money. I liked how you could decide how spicy you wanted your food. Although I'm not a vegetarian myself , I did notice they had extensive meat-free options. The other parts of my experience with the restaurant were less than ideal. First, I tried ordering takeout for almost an hour before giving up and just going over there. We were seated in a short amount of time and ordered appetizers right away. After waiting for nearly forty five minutes for our appetizers to come out, we said something to the waitress. I won't get into other details, but our service was generally not the best. Although we received sub-par service, it was a Saturday and we all make mistakes... This was only one experience and I would definitely give them a few more shots before I would say that they had poor service in general, especially because the food was so good! read more

This really is the best Indian restaurant in Boulder. (This is coming from someone who lived in London and NYC for years.) We regularly order takeout from them when we feel like splurging. Everything is tasty and usually had a good amount of spice (but never overwhelming since we order medium). Our faves are chicken tikka masala, the divine samosas, lamb vindaloo, channa masala, vegetable korma, aloo mutter, the biryanis, and the sheekh kabob. The staff are always very kind. The one time many years back when we had an issue, the owner reimbursed us and gave us a free dinner the next time. Highly recommend this wonderful place. read more

I am absolutely an Indian food snob, but this is one of my 2 goto restaurants whenever I am around...I've probably eaten here 150 times (not that they would notice). Their bottomless chai warms the soul and their vegetable masala has a magical touch. My only complaint, the service can be mediocre. I've been there with a party of 8, and they pretty much ignored us...but the food is so good that I cannot imagine reducing their number of stars. read more
