Took a class here for the first time. I had a great time and my instructor, Eric, was super cool, friendly, and witty. I took a journal-making class, which is offered twice a month and gets filled up very quickly. There are other "how to" classes including basket-weaving, belt-making, card game case, journal holster, wallet, etc. It's super neat and it's a fun activity to do with other strangers! Price isn't bad and I appreciate how cool everyone is here! Will be coming back for another class. read more

I was searching for a place or items to do some leather crafting. I of course first looked at what Michaels had but it just wasn't what I was looking for. So trusty Yelp gave me Tandy Leather and let's just say....wow. Who knew such a treasure of a place existed in Fremont Hub of all places. L O C A T I O N You can park on either side in the middle of Fremont Hub. If you're coming from the Staples side, just walk in the walk way towards the middle of the hub and it should be directly to the left before you go into the middle walkway. From the Dick's Sporting Goods/Five Below side, walk towards the middle walkway, turn left, walk a little, and you should see it to your right. Parking is shared all over the hub with other stores/restaurants. I found parking right in front of Dick's Sporting Goods. I N S I D E The smell of leather wafts in the air. You know it's real. They have many leather hide of different shades, sizes, types, etc. You're walking into a leather wonderland. Not only the items themselves, but what you can do with leather line the edges of the store. S E R V I C E These folks LOVE what they do and they love leather. They were warm and welcoming. Helping out when you need it but not pressuring you one way or another. They helped me out when trying to figure out how to stamp leather as well as what leather you can stamp on. You can try things to your hearts delight at least when trying out stamps. Checking out was really easy too though I don't think they had touchless payment as I had to pull out my card (maybe they did and I was just not paying attention). I went in for help to punch a hole in a belt I didn't want to mess up. Service was so great! The girl that helped was so patient with me and spent at least 20-30 minutes with me making sure where the hole would be since I had no idea where I should put it and how to punch a hole in (she let me practice a few times). I had no idea this place even existed and I've been to Fremont Hub a million times. I came to do a leather tooling class and I was very impressed. The employees were super friendly and helpful. During the class, the instructor Alex, was attentive, respectful, and patient with all the newbies like me learning a new skill. I really enjoyed the class and can't wait to return for another one. They had lots of supplies and variety of tools. Highly recommend!! The tooling class was free and they have other classes for a very little fee compared to other leather classes that charge hundreds of dollars. I have a Shinola wallet that had severe water damage. I went to this store to find a leather dye to try to conceal the damage. Cami was so friendly and knowledgeable. She recommended a leather gel dye, instead of acrylic leather paint. She recommended that I embrace the patina. She even offered to dye it for me!! She spent 45 minutes with me, cleaning it, conditioning it, dying it. I offered to pay, but she did not accept. Such a wonderful neat shop! I highly recommend this store for all your leather needs. Every time I go here, I can't leave without having purchased something. That's bad news for my credit card, but so much fun for me. Having graduated from fashion school and a love and respect for leather, this place is a candy store for me. I told myself that I would just stop in while running errands. But I'm always here for at least an hour! It's not that I'm browsing their entire selection, which is vast and caters to any leather project one would have, but I'm trying to figure out which hides I want. Some day, I'm going to be an elite member and I'll be able to pay those amazing discounted prices on all of their products. But until that day comes, I'm more than happy shopping during their sales. Actually, I feel that they always have something on sale that I want. It's jut a matter of if I'll really be able to use it anytime soon. One of my biggest regrets was not buying a stingray hide. I don't know what I would turn it into, but their hides are like a flat, flexible jewel. And until I purchase an industrial or leather sewing machine, I'll be sticking to the lower count ounces of leathers. Not that that is even a problem, as that includes goatskin, deerskin, and pigskin to name a few. I left the store today with two designer goatskin whole hides. The embossed patterns are so unique, I know they'll look great regardless of what I turn them into. I'll be spending the next few days dreaming about the rest of the designer goatskins that are only $14.99 a piece right now. And no, it's not a typo. And yes, there is a huge assortment or gorgeous patent goatskins. I hope I don't end up going back this week. Someone else buy them all and give them a good home so that I don't have to! I never catch the names of the guys who help me, but they're always helpful without ever being too pushy about assistance or product. I have never written negative feedback for businesses but my experience with this store was so bad that I have to let others know to be aware of this store's practice. When I bought a piece of leather at this store on 2/23/19 (my first time here), I asked about refund policy and the cashier said I had 60 days to return if it's unused. Today 3/9/19, I brought the piece back for return, expecting a usual smooth return process. To my surprise, the store manager denied my return stating that she does not take return of discontinued item. It didn't matter that I mentioned what the cashier told me purchase, or the return policy printed on receipt about 100% satisfaction guarantee for 60 days, she repeated the same no return on discontinued reason. The item i bought was not discontinued when I bought it. There was no mention of "discontinue" or "clearance" or "not returndable" or "sales final" anywhere on the item's tag that I purchased or printed on receipt. There are a few bins clearly tagged with clearance/final but the one I bought was on top of the main 2nd table isle along with other leather are only on 'sale'. I went back to the leather stack to double check if I was mistaken. Nope, the tag still doesn't have any indication that it's a final sale. However, the suggested retail price was largely inflated to show a large sale discount (When I bought the item, Retail price:42.99, bought for $35. Now, Retail price:89.99, sale 19.99). The manager came over and said she didn't have to put any indication that the items are not returndable. I'll never do business with this store again. I'm just starting out the hobby and there would be plenty more transactions but if a store manager doesn't hold up to what I was told verbally and printed policy for a meager purchase return, the store doesn't deserve my business. I showed up to one of their weekly workshops where you can come up and work on projects as well as get help from other people there. Lots of peer helping peers.. and it's so wonderful that they offer that. With only a slight idea in mind, it doesn't take much money to get the materials you need, and who knows... the very same night, you can end up with something awesome in your possession that you made yourself. The sales lady in a very condescending manner asked me to place my lunch bag loaded with books to be placed on table. And with sarcastic tone said "it's written on the door". I am not sure who is running this store or what but there is poor directive and accountability for customer service. There are ways to communicate any type of policy. And if this is welcoming language I forecast a closing store soon. After writing a good review, things have changed. I just had an unpleasant experience at this location. Tandy ended their membership program last month. I was not aware. My purchase today totaled 340.00. When I asked the adolescent boy working the register if my discount was applied he informed me that they no longer had memberships. I inquired how that works considering that I paid to renew my membership just a few months ago. With attitude, he told me that I should have received something in the mail. I expressed to him that I recently moved. He told me that there was nothing he could do and that I would need to contact Tandy corporate and figure it out on my own. It was my belief that I should not have to go out of my way to fix a problem I did not create. At this point it was obvious that this young boy was not experienced enough to navigate the situation. He was acting with the confidence of a manager, yet he could not manage answering my direct questions challenging his solution to the problem. At this point another employee Viviana could see I was getting frustrated with the attitude and the answers I was being given and decided to assist. Within minutes she was able to see that I was not issued a refund yet for my membership fee and adjusted my total. She deducted the cost of my membership from my purchase and the problem was solved. The arrogance this boy expressed was stifling and could only be explained by his inexperience and age. I agree with the other recent reviews. The people who work at craft stores should be able to answer the questions about the craft, and especially be able to discuss changes made by the company to the customer. He was not able to do either. While Viviana handled everything professionally, I don't feel he should have been given the chance to be the face of Tandy to explain without the skills to clearly explain the changes. He was clearly unqualified. When a company makes adjustments to their policies, they should be prepared for customers to be confused and ask questions. I paid for a service they discontinued. I felt like the young boy I dealt with today does not yet possess the life experience or skills to work an adult job. With the unwarranted attitude he was giving me, it was a good thing that Viviana was able to step in and instantly correct his mistakes. He spoke to me unprofessionally, was incapable of performing his job and ignorant when asking about Tandy products. If I could make 2 suggestions for the team at this location... 1 would be to work on better communication. 2... hire employees that have more knowledge and experience than simply being the crossing guard at the local high school. read more

Vegans, read no further. Others who covet the hides of defenseless creatures in a spotless, business-park location, you are my people. I have become possessed by an idea that I can make a leather ottoman from an old kitchen cabinet part. However, I didn't a) want to spend too much money, nor b) abuse the legacy left behind by the poor defenseless creature since odds are good that I'll mess up the project. The Husband told me about Tandy Leather Factory, which apparently is a national chain. So, I drove to Union City to the surprisingly antiseptic settings -- surprising because I was a) taking the name Factory literally (but then again, Boston Market is Denver-based) and b) expected a place devoted to leather would be, I don't know, like a taxidermy place? (Not that I've ever been.) Anyhow, I drove past the deli, restaurant, and the mixed martial arts place across the way and entered a pristine environment, with neatly shelved tools and rolled up hides, and offerings of classes that teach you everything from leather embossing to saddle making. Come to think of it, this is like the Jo Ann Fabric's of flesh. Brian, manning the shop, immediately came out to help me. I explained my project and my parsimonious tendencies, and he helped me find the perfect huuuuge piece of espresso brown cowhide. On clearance. For $30. Did I mention $30? Sheesh, it makes you want to get a bunch of hides and re-enact "The Silence of the Lambs" in your basement. Without the kidnapping-the-girls part. Brian not only helped score the hide, but he gave me tips on my project -- he's a craftsman himself, and sweetly impeccable in his customer service. With my liberal-therefore-suspicious-of-chains background, giving 5 stars to a corporate entity is against my nature (and as much as I josh, I do feel creeped out by the concept of a chain store specializing in defenseless creatures' hides -- although did I mention the sheepskin rugs on sale for $29.99?). But, thanks to great service by a craftsman and finding exactly what I wanted at a great price, can't get better than that. read more

Very upset. I placed at order at 2am we'd the 24th. Emailed twice a verbal conversation with the person who actually got me email request to cancel all before they opened. I told them to cancel the order and the status at time of emails and verbal phone call was unfulfilled on the order. Nothing had been processed. I've been to this location several times, and as another reviewer said, it's like a fabric store, but for Leather. To be totally honest, the very first time I went in, there was a class going on, and there were so many things in there that I literally had no idea what I wanted to make. My mind was bursting with possibilities, but I just spent some time wandering around and trying to soak in all the potentials that were there, then let that percolate in my brain for a bit. (The hardtack leather for creating saddles, stirrups and such was what really opened my mind to the possibilities. I suddenly realized just how much stuff is crafted out of leather, and realized that the place was bursting with creative potential.) When I went back, I had better ideas and questions for the (very helpful) staff, who were able to point me to exactly the materials and tools that I needed, recommend oils and conditioners, punch kits & tools, etc. They also have a really great collection of books, magazines, and pattern kits in case you want to dig deeper and get reference material on more in-depth projects. I've done a lot of sewing and costuming over the years, but leather is still a relatively new material to me. But going into the Tandy Leather Factory fills me with the same kind of excitement as going into a fabric store and seeing all sorts of materials there, patiently waiting for the right person with the right idea to bring it to life. So, skip TV for an afternoon and learn how to make something. Belts, bags, wallets, bracelets, cases, clothing, furniture.... anything! Very friendly staff and they go out of their way to help you with whatever projects you're working on or want to start. And you never know, you can even make some money with your new found skills. December 2015 THE "new" manager, came in the store in December, cut off the existing classes, and cut out open tables, the store looks a mess. He has done this before and the classes were gone for 6 months. This time, same thing again, no classes, no open tables. There are several customers and myself that are not coming back to make purchases at the store and have already made the move to purchase everything from a Superstore in MO. I needed a quarter hide of red leather for a piece of furniture Inhave been building. Thanks to the very helpful assistance from the young sales guy at Tandy, I was able to get a great textured hide at a great price, a long leathers trip for trim, beveling tools, smoothing tools, dye and spray sheen, all for less than $100, the guy who helped us was very patient explaining how to safety and assuredly use the beveling and smoothing tools and talking us through the custom dying techniques. Since I have spent a significant amount on the sideboard I've been working on, it was crucial that the top and edging turn out perfect. With thanks to Tandy, it did. It's nice that they have such an amazing selection of leathers, hobby kits, tools, dyes and accessories. I may just need to check out one of their classes! read more

Classes are back on. Our Cub Scout Pack 815 just had our annual leather class here last week. It was great, this time we did dyes and worked on tree different projects.
