As a Persian immigrant, I'm very happy to have discovered this store! I saw so many beloved things that I grew up with, like sangak, torshi, baghlava, and dolmeh. The prices are totally fair, too. They have a small dining portion in the back where they make Lebanese food fresh, which is so nice! I would love to return for that with my family. They really do have an enormous selection, including baked goods, breads, canned items, refrigerated and frozen items, desserts, and more. The owner was lovely, too. Very nice family owned business. We love the lamb gyros. Freshly cooked with grilled onions, tomatoes, and lettuce. Staff is very friendly. Tangiers is a great spot for pickup. I'll typically order a Gyro and it's made quickly with fresh ingredients right in front of you at the counter. The market has lot of international goods ranging from sauces to specialty kombuchas. I've always liked Tangiers, but it's just outside my normal dining radiance. Yelp's recent Top 25 Places to Eat in CT list reminded me that I was overdue for a visit. Tangiers is a great Middle Eastern/Mediterranean market where you might buy high quality olives, feta, hard to find Mediterranean or Middle Eastern cheeses, oil, baklava, frozen meals, yogurt, etc. For that reason alone, Tangiers is a 5 Yelp Star business. And at least at certain times of day, you can also order food for takeout or you can eat at one of a few inside or outside tables. I've only ordered gyros and baklava, but they're very good. The gyros are unique to what I've had in other places. On my recent visit, I ordered a lamb gyro. The meat is very thin-sliced relative to other places. I mean that as a style observation only. There's an appropriate amount of meat. It also comes with chopped sautéed onions, tomatoes and I think peppers. I've never had that on another gyro anywhere. The pita is very good and grilled. The filling also includes lettuce, cabbage, and tzatziki. The gyro is tasty and satisfying. The service at Tangiers has always been exceptional. Like seriously Top 5 percentile for all businesses. They're very helpful and genuinely happy to see you. Definitely check out Tangiers if you like to cook, or explore different types of food markets. Been coming here for years, always great service and food. The falafel sandwich is delicious I always get it with hot sauce and no onions. Baba Ganouj is creamy and tangy served with a good portion of bread, and the hummus as well. I really wish that I could get a picture of my falafel before I scarf it down! I drive quite a distance just to get these for me and my kids (who are grown) because we just love our Tangier Falafels . We have been going to Tangiers for at least 20 years. Since the guys in there were young men working with their family. I always shop around a bit while waiting for my falafels. They have some really cool stuff in there. However, if you call and place your orders in advanced they'll be ready when you get there. The food is always delicious and the owners/staff are welcoming and accommodating. I really like the falafel. I often feel deprived when I eat vegetarian but not when I eat the Tangiers falafel wrap and lentil soup. Others in my family love the meat gyros. Nobody complains when I suggest we order take out from Tangiers. I always get some of the humus to take home and the stuffed grape leaves are a hit at parties. read more

Small barebones international grocery store with foods from a bunch of different countries. At the back of the store they have a small grill area where you can get some hot food as well. Their is some counter seating at the grill, and some table seating scattered around the place as well. The grill has a small menu and they primarily offer gyro's, falafels, kebabs, & salads, but they also have a couple other dishes as well. I got a chicken gyro and it was delicious. Tangiers is an absolute staple in Hartford County and easily known for some of the best gyros anywhere! I first tried this place years ago when my friend who is a teacher is Hartford bought me a gyro as a thank you for helping setup her classroom! I have been thinking about that gyro ever since... but never went back. Shame on me! That same friend brought me one the other night when we went to trivia together nearby. I have gotten delicious falafel here on several occasions. I always arrive with an Israeli friend who attests that TANGIERS' falafel is the best. Their middle eastern food sore is very clean, and the brothers who run the shop are always friendly. I am very bothered by their policy to never post prices on their menu on the wall or individual copies. I think it reflects a certain arrogance that customers will order and not consider cost, ever. I love this place. I really discovered the amazing Tangier's via their food truck, Baba Ganoush, at Hooker Brewery last summer. I finally got a chance to check out their store in Hartford and it's amazing. I grabbed some fresh dates for my Mom who loves them! There's an old adage that you get what you pay for, and this store and restaurant is certainly an example. This was likely the tastiest eggplant dish I've ever had, and the best lamb gyro, but also the most I've ever paid for either, at least by quantity. I'm not sure how often I'll come back, but it's the best curated store I've ever been to. There's labneh, feta, various spices, oils, flat bread, and much, much, more. The service is also top notch. I stopped by here this past Thursday for a quick afternoon snack. My coworker had told me about Tangier International and I am glad that he did. It's located right on Farmington Ave in a somewhat nondescript building. Yes they have a sign outside saying they are a supermarket but I would have never guessed that it had a lunch counter like area in one of the back corners. On the day that I was there the seating area for the food (a bar and a a few tables) was pretty crowded. In the food prep area were two well dressed and friendly guys that seemed to be working pretty hard making everyone's food. For my snack on this day I decided to go with a falafel sandwich as well as a hummus with pita. It was ready after only a short wait and I paid at the counter and headed out of the store. Whenever I was able to finally dig into my sandwich I was pretty impressed. The falafel itself had a nice seasoning to it and I enjoyed it paired with the lettuce tomato and dressing that was also inside the wrap. As for the wrap itself, it was tight and nothing was coming out of it which I appreciated. After finishing the sandwich I was able to try the hummus and pita. While the hummus had a nice tahini flavor to it I found it to be a little on the bland side. I did enjoy the pita though which had the perfect firmness to it. It gave a you a nice bite to it without being overly chewy. The bottom line for me is that I would head back here again in the future. As a matter of a fact I plan on bringing a coworker with me the next time we both visit Hartford. read more

There are a couple of gentlemen dressed nicely taking orders and cooking. I ended up ordering the gyro and we split some hummus. This was one of the better gyros I've ever had! Who DOESN'T want to sit and watch 5 tall, dark, and handsome men in dress clothes cook delicious food right in front of them? Thank you that is the end of my review. No, I'm just kidding. But in all honesty, never in the 5 years I have been enjoying Tangiers food have I had anything that wasn't simply prepared, fresh, flavorful, pure deliciousness. Years of gyros, kebab patters and wraps, tabouleh, hummus, falafel, and not ONE bad meal. You know a place is legit when you order falafel and they pull out a massive container of freshly made falafel mix that they hand pack and fry, and not pre-made frozen falafel balls like some places do. These guys should really just be exceptionally proud of the fact that they have taken a pretty unassuming place that just looks like a specialty grocery store when you walk in, and turned it into some of the best simplified traditional Mediterranean food around. How is it that I've had countless, delicious falafels from Tangiers and just got around to ordering a gyro?? I finally hit up their new location in the West End after placing a to-go order on the phone. Two falafels and a beef gyro please. That gyro was off the hook. The pita was magical in that it was both soft and had a little crispiness on the outside. The beef, oh the beef, was so tasty, thin and lean. I also bought several funky Kit Kats (dark chocolate, creamy and double caramel) some falafel chips and something that looked like scooter pies but tasted WAY better. I'm on a gyro tear lately, having hit up Tapas several times in recent weeks but this week I'm sure I'll be back at Tangiers to get another one (instead). read more
